CentOS 5 :: Yum Groupinstall "X Window System" Failure?

May 2, 2009

I'm trying to host a dedicated game server for a game called garry's mod. I have to use wine *PUKE*, because the developer of the game doesn't think linux is that great, so I don't have binaries to get the server running.

I got wine installed just fine with no errors. I have vnc installed and running, and able to make connections. (nothing but a never ending black hole of darkness) This leads me to the issue. I tried to launch the installation of Steam to get the garrys mod server running, and this is the out put, and you can see my actions that I took to see if I could get things rolling, unfortunitly, I have encountered an error that I just don't know how to solve.

Fedora Installation :: VNC Level 3 Installation - Remote Into The System Via My Windows Xp Systems

Sep 15, 2009

What I'm trying to do at this point is setup VNC so I can remote into the system via my windows xp systems. I have VNC installed on those computer and I was able to get GNOME's remote desktop operating when I log in on level 5 and actually logged into my user account. However, when I'm not logged in on level 5 it will reject connections entirely. Ultimately I want to remote into the system using tightVNC and view the level 3 (command line only) thing, and allow me to telinit - 5 to switch to gui if I need it from VNC on the windows system. This way I don't need a monitor, keyboard and mouse plugged into the server. Right now that's what I'm having to do.

The problem is that it doesn't run in level 3 at all and level 5 (gui mode) doesn't work if i'm not logged into an account. So how can I get this to work at as a constant running server no matter what level and login point i'm at? Ultimately for this Linux admin class I have to setup a working server and I figured I'd get a base setup with VNC support that I could log into from school to work off of instead of having to use the local connection. Once I get VNC working on my network i'm pretty sure I can get it working beyond my local network.

Here's some commandline stuff that may diagnose my issues:

Code:

As you can see I'm having issues with the libstdc++ lib being detected. I have it installed, but apparently not everything is setup properly. I also have an RPM file for VNC and I've tried to install it with the gnome shell but it gives me an error: "Can't install /home/[user]/Download/vnc-4_1_3-x86_linux.rpm as no transaction" I'm not sure what that means. When I use the command line I get this:

Fedora Installation :: Shrinking Current Windows System?

Oct 31, 2010

I may require some aid in installing Fedora 13 (via a burned CD iso image) on a double boot system with Windows 7 as default. After going through the keyboard mapping and time-zone selection, I had the option of shrinking my Windows to accommodate Fedora, which I chose. The following selection appeared:

/dev/sda1.ntfs 0MB
/dev/sda2.ntfs 0MB
/dev/sda3.ntfs 0MB

If I try to decrease any of them, this communication materialises: Error: new size same as old size. So I canceled the installation set-up and rebooted Windows. I'm quite new to alternative operating systems (having used Windows all my life) and would appreciate a concise and legible answer.

Fedora Installation :: Does Live USB Creator Create A Working System For Windows 7?

May 12, 2010

Before going too far it may be simplest to answer the question "Does Live USB Creator create a working system for Windows 7?" If not then don't bother reading further. I have installed Live USB Creator on a 32-bit Windows 7 computer but when I run it I can't for the life of me get it to recognize any type of drive. I've read and tried the instructions of using the command line with the --force [drive]: but that has no effect Maybe I am misunderstanding this whole program. From what I read about it, this program will create a working Windows system, place it on a USB stick and then run Windows on a different computer. In my application I would like to run it on my work computer which has Windows XP. If this application should work then will I have complete access to all my computer drives and files and the network/internet? I imagine I would need to install all necessary programs so that I could use them in Windows 7 and would I need to install those programs on the USB stick or could they be on a local hard drive?

Debian Installation :: System Going Down - Install Fails Every Time

Apr 27, 2015

When I try to install Debian 8 on my laptop I get this rather odd error. The install fails every time. I've managed to get as far as choosing which Desktop Environment I want and the shortly after it shuts off. It shows 4 messages

Code: Select allSystem is going down!
Sending Termsignal
Sending Killsignal
Requesting Machine Poweroff

The machine I'm trying to install on is a Gateway NV53, 4gb of RAM, AMD Athlon II x64.

At first I thought it might be my disc so I burnt another DVD using the 4.3GB DVD image I had downloaded. I checked the disc and it verified with the image and so I tried again with the same results as above. Any clue what might be causing this? I'm sure it isn't my hardware, Arch has been running fine for almost 6 months and never seemed to care.

OpenSUSE Install :: System Reboot Fails During 11.3 Installation

Aug 3, 2010

I am trying to update my OS from Opensuse 11.2 to 11.3 using the installation DVD (checked OK). Everything is OK during the installation process until the message "System is going to reboot" is displayed with a countdown : when the countdown is finished, the screen becomes black and the screensaver starts, but the system does not reboot. When I reboot manually, after selecting "Opensuse 11.3 desktop" on the first menu, the screen becomes black and the screensaver starts.

So the installation seems incomplete and I do not know how to finalize it. When I select the failsafe option on the first menu, it seems to work but some behaviours are quite "strange"... When I choose update instead of installation at the beginning, the behaviour is the same.

I do not know if it is linked but the firmware tests started from the installation DVD show the following errors :

Memory tests are OK.

Ubuntu Installation :: Why The File System Creation Fails

Aug 8, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu alongside windows 7 on my machine, and currently I am having difficulty doing so.Upon initial boot of the LiveCD,it says the installer has encountered an unrecognized error and just goes straight to desktop environment. From there, I can restart the installer just fine but here is where the trouble starts.

Currently, I have a 2TB RAID 0 array utilizing 4 500GB Seagate barracuda SATA II drives. The controller is an nForce 780a NVRaid. I currently have two NTFS partitions for windows. One 150GB primary partition for C:, and another 781GB D: for the storage of games, music and movies. When I try to manually setup the partitions in the Ubuntu installer, I do it like this.

- 200MB ext2 primary partition for /boot
- 150GB xfs logical partition for /
- approx 750GB xfs logical partition for /home (You've probably figured out I'm following the same C: and D: scheme as in windows)
- 8192 MB partition for swap

I then proceed with the install. I see the progress bar complete for the boot partition, but then at about 7% for / it stops and gives a message saying partition creation has failed. I even tried using different filesystems like ReiserFS and Ext4. Same thing every time. I am running a 64bit quadcore system BTW if that is of any importance.

Fedora :: X-windows Fails Under FC12 64 Bit

Nov 19, 2009

I recently upgraded my CPU (just before the release of FC12), to a 64-bit compatible Intel Core 2 E7600. Upon the release of FC12 I moved to the 64 bit version (via a clean install).

I noticed that NVIDIA does not work (as many topics on this forum confirm). So I reinstalled and used the FC12 default drivers (I think they are called Nouveau-drivers). This seemed to work, so I ran "yum update", and now all X-windows fail.

KDE complaints: "kstartup4 does not exist or fails" and GNOME also complains (sorry forgot the exact error message)

I'd be happy to send logs, but if these are required, which log you want and where I can find it.

how to get or KDE or GNOME running ? (preferably KDE)

System:
Intel Core 2 Duo E7600 (3.1 GHz)

Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT

-- used windows 7 volume shrink to get windows partition to 65 GB
-- created an NTFS volume in the new 220 GB partition with windows (Ubuntu studio's partitioner would not recognize the space unless I did this first)
-- ran ubuntu studio 10.04 installer
-- deleted the 220 GB partition and the installer automatically created a new ext4 partition with a swap partition.

After another couple of installs (with lvm & w/o lvm) & even disconnecting the second harddrive -> same issue

Typing 'ls' in the rescue grub prompt returns

Code:

Cant 'ls /' into a single them - unknown filesystem (grub is installed in mbr of sdb) 'linux rescue' (wanted to try manual grub installation) command didnt work either.

Edit: I popped the cover, temporarily added an SATA DVD drive, and installation is going OK. That pretty much isolates it to recognition of the USB DVD drive.

Fedora Installation :: F10 On SAS - Add Static IP Fails

Feb 16, 2009

I'm getting ready to install F10 x64 on a Supermicro 7045A-3B on an SAS; I would like to partition the drives free space; I have an OS (Windows 2003 Server R2 x64; sorry still have a few apps that need it; can't wait for the day I can see the end of MS on my computers) on it and I don't want to hose it.

Motherboard: X7DA3
16 GB RAM
Adaptec AIC-9410 SAS Controller (Dual 136 GB Seagate SAS drives in RAID 0)

I also have 1 SATA Drive bay; maybe I could install Windoze on it; but I still need to know how to install F10 on an SAS. So far my stumbling block has been when I click on advanced storage device; when it ask for Network configuration I add my Static IP; it fails; I note that it does this on all installs of F10 on other computers as well; but installed with no problem; problem here seems to get past that after hitting cancel; going back I get to Add iSCSI; I have no idea what information to put in blocks: Target IP Address, iSCSI Initiator Name, CHAP User name, password and reverse info for them. I do admit how that I don't think I need to add an iSCSI device; I just don't see the SAS as an option and don't know how to add it.

Fedora Installation :: Preupgrade To F12 Fails?

Nov 19, 2009

I tried a pre-upgrade last night and after downloading 7GB of stuff over night, (don't ask me why it was that much) I rebooted.

Everything looked okay until I got an error message that said that /mnt/sysimage/... (I can't remember exactly what the error message was, sorry) what did not have enough space and needed 19MB more to install the upgrades.

Now, this system quad boots between Fedora, XP, Vista and 7 with grub being the intial boot loader giving me the option of Fedora or the Windows bootloader.

What I don't understand is why the installer (anaconda?) is having a fit about space when I have 8GB RAM and the system partitions are >10GB in size.
