to access my floppy from Fedora 11. It is mounted automatically,but when i try to open it by double-clicking, I just get "already mounted" message.I need to retrieve my old menu.lst which is on the floppy. It will then need to be edited to include Fedora.
View 1 RepliesIs there something weird about the FLOPPY DRIVE on F12? Nothing associated with it works & I can't get an icon for it. Also the FLOPPY FORMATTER no longer works. (mine is an internal drive)- I had some really miner quirks with it in 10 but it worked. I had some workaround launchers that I used until an upgrade semi-fixed it. (It would give a false error that it couldn't run but did. I just ignored it.)
I tried to edit FSTAB to cure a problem of my BACKUP drive showing up twice*** so while I was in there I added the stuff for the floppy & it still doesn't work. If I try to mount it manually, I get the error that /dev/fd0 doesn't exist.I tried to find some info on it & it SEEMS that there MAY be a bug but I'm not sure as the info is a bit confusing as to just what version & such they are talking about. And there was also the problem that all the stuff seemed to be OLD or not related to my problem.I why I quite hacking at my system, is that all my workaround launchers & the formatter say that there are GNOME things missing & they can't run. So I figure that there is something missing or screwy already & that I'd better ask BEFORE I make things worse or actually break something.With the fact that floppies are about gone, it's getting to be not that big of a deal but I still find myself having to use them for repair purposes (albeit, not as much) & it gets to be a bit of a pain to fire up M$ just to do something like this.
*** It appears that the one in FSTAB was the one I needed, so where would the OTHER one be so I can get rid of it? Or at least make it auto mount.
I have a floppy I could read in 7.1. I just installed 10.04 and cannot read the disk. In the home places panel, it recognizes the floppy but when I put the curser on it, it says "mount and read disk". When I left click, nothing happens. When I right click, menu options include "open" and "identify media" When I click on these, nothing happens. I have "fdutils" installed. Best I can tell, that is the only floppy software installed.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a computer with no floppy drive (x64 ubuntu lucid installed) I have a program (wine windows xp) that will only save data and export data from/to a floppy drive. I found information on setting up an emulated floppy drive. i.e.
sudo dd bs=512 count=2880 if=/dev/zero of=imagefile.img
sudo mkfs.msdos imagefile.img
sudo mount imagefile.img /media/floppy -o loop
I modified the winecfg to include under the drive section A: /media/floppy. Problem is I cannot write to the drive as a normal user. I have tried everything I know but only root can read write to the drive. Is there someway to set up this emulated floppy to allow me as a user to write and read contents.
Is there anyway of reading old floppy disks on a computer running ubuntu lucid 64 bit?

I know that most machines don't come with them anymore unless you ask for one.One of my machines [Machine # 2] has a floppy and I have never had the occaision to use it under linux [opensuse 11.2 currently]. Until now that is! I have about 30 floppies that I need to transfer the data from. I am able to mount the floppy drive and take data off the currently inserted floppy, but if I want to insert another floppy and remove the data from it, I must unmount and remount the floppy everytime. There is an entry in fstab:
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0
and a mount point in media [/media/floppy] Is there something else I need to have in the fstab line for the floppy so that it will read automatically everytime I insert a disk?
My goal is to have a dual boot system with Windows and linux. When no floppy is loaded Windows should boot. When a linux boot floppy is loaded linux should boot.Windows (and its boot loader) are on hd0. I installed Fedora 10 to hd1 and had install put the boot loader on that drive. I followed the instructions in http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=150913 to make a boot floppy. But when I use the boot floppy the system brings up the grub prompt and stops.

However, I have external DVD device witch connect through USB, and I have the notebook bootable floppy desk, how can I install FC11 using those?

View 3 Replies View RelatedA while ago I made the jump from Mandriva to Fedora. I am very pleased with Fedora, but some things do not seem to be as easy as with Mandriva. Maybe I just got to find my way around and am not aware there are packages that will do what I want, so I think it is a good idea to ask here..Well - I have a multi-boot system. There are a few partitions to test out different Linux versions (like specialised music distro's with low-latency kernels). As a result the MBR gets overwritten by other installs now and then.In Mandriva it was possible to create a simple boot disk without any images - just a "link" or "jump" to vmlinuz etc. on the root partition from the main Linux system. I think only the MBR part was written on the floppy. It was very easy done in the control centre by choosing fd0 in stead of hda as boot medium.
This disk whas a life saver if the MBR was overwritten by another OS intall. I just put in the floppy and boot from that floppy strait into the standard grub menu and so I was able to re-create grub (by doing the same process but pointing to hda in stead of fd0 as boot medium).
Is there a way to create the same simple boot disc under Fedora 14?

This error message appeared after the step that the installer asked me to choose where to install boot loader and configure the GRUB boot menu. According to my research what I want to do cannot be done. However, i'm sure there must be a way.This is my scenario - I will try to be as accurate as I can be to make it easier for poeple to help. I have a Sony Vaio PCG-141C laptop, the half sized old ones. It has a usb floppy drive that I can boot from. I have also got a usb cd-rom drive but the laptop simply will not boot from it! I have got the F12 cd images downloaded and on a usb hard drive.
I want to boot from a floppy disc, to load F12 from the cd images stored on the usb hard drive. Now with Redhat 9 you could use a floppy drive to do just this. However, F12, does not support it.
Is there a work-around that I could try. I have already tried Smart Boot Manager, but it won't detect the usb cd-rom drive. I have Redhat 9 installed on the laptop, and can mount the usb hard drive from terminal. Could I start the install process from here with the images stored on the external drive??Is there anything I can do, or am I doomed to never get past this.

I am having a Promise TX4650 RAID controller & trying to create a driver floppy for installing the drivers. Also am using RHEL 5, I can create the driver floppy, but when I type "mount /dev/fd0 /media/floppy" I get error: "mount: mount point /media/floppy does not exist".Can I get the files in a format other than the ext2 floppy image, so that we do not need to use a floppy drive?There is a readme file inside the driver archive & you can use that as a reference.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have the following problem on fedora 12, x64 amd; I have installed fedora 12 from a live cd, whit custum partition tables (no lvm or somting like that). my sceam is (on a single 80 gb maxtor sata disk only 1 system, clean install):

/home
swap
Notitng more (not needed also). The installation was successfully. No problems on the install part. ALs no problems on the ugprade part. I installed the rest using yum groupinstall. When i want to add the extra 4 disks (all samsung 1 tb spinpoint sata) that i have for my backupdata, non of the partiotionprograms can recognise. If i do; moun /dev/sdb1/ /media/sdb1, it says that i need to add the file system. well, by some sort of misstake, i could find a workaround for this. When start gparted, select on of the samsung disks, select any of the flags in gpart, remove the flag and give it a ok, gpart can read the amount of data thats used. After that i ame able to mount whit a simple mount /dev/sbd1 /media/sdb1 command. When i use this command: hdparm -z /dev/sdb1, i can mount the disk afterwards, whitout problems. Of course, i need to add them als to my /etc/fstab file, so they automount each time at boot.........
I am having trouble trying to use a 1.44 MB floppy drive on my computer. I have tried to mount the drive on my computer, but all I get is the following message:

One post mentioned that if I were to type "id" in a terminal, the floppy would be recognized as "25(floppy)". I tried that, but "25(floppy)" didn't come up.

I am working on an old PC and I am trying to mount a floppy disk. The disk is formatted as Fat12 with Quote: mkdosfs -F 12 /dev/fd0 Weather it auto mounts or I mount it with sudo mount Quote: /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0
it says it works fine, but if I add files to it,remove the disk and put it in another machine nothing is on the disk. The files I add to the disk just get added to /media/floppy0 as a normal directory. If I try to umount /dev/fd0 it says the device is not mounted, even directly after I mount it.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu Linux 10.04 on my computer with following specs:
ASUS P5KR Mobo
HIS 2600XT GFX
160 GB Hitachi Harddisk (SATA)
500 GB Hitachi Harddisk (SATA) - Only for Data.
The 160 GB Harddisk is currently split into 3 main partitions: i) 200 MB created by Win7 setup.
1) Windows 7
2) Leopard OSX
3) Partition formatted in Leopard as Journal which is empty, meaning I can convert this if I want and onto which I will install Ubuntu.
My problem is that despite booting up fine, installer starting and working fine, it cannot however detect my partition table, it thinks its unallocated.
The funny thing is that I can mount the partitions and view the data but the installer however can't see it.

View 1 Replies View Related1.) Whenever i am starting a new instance of terminal, it is giving messages 'unable to read input images' five times. Actually i had run a shell script that gave this message, but why is it appearing every time, i am opening a new terminal, (that script is already over and it generated the required outputs)? Because of this, when i run 'ls' command, it is showing all the files and directories with the same color, otherwise it used to show them in different colors.
2.) Once my panel had crashed, then i have made a new panel, but after that my instant messenger icon is no more keeps sitting on the system tray as it used to do before, it closes as i close its window otherwise even after closing the window, it used to keep me logged in and the icon use to be there at system tray.
3.) automount for usbdrive not working? Note: all these problems are there only in my own user account. Other user account like root and guest has everything correct.

I'm trying to install Kubuntu on an old Windows system. I am getting tons of errors such as:
I/O error
SQUASHFS error:unable to read page, block XXXXXX
SQUASHFS error: unable to read fragment cache block
It then reports that it's loading ACPI modules and starting the ACPI services, starting the system log daemon, doing Wacom setup, starting kernel log daemon.....and then it reads sb_bread failed reading block umptysquat.I have a feeling that this hard drive is toast. I can't get it to install Windoze or Linux. I can't even get a prompt so I can do a low-level format. Unfortunately, I'm not super savvy with Linux and don't know what to do next.
I am running the latest suse release downloaded directly from their website. I ran the installation after buring the dvd and everything seemed to be working fine. after the installation i ran updates and used it for a little bit. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer doesn't support booting from a cd or a usb stick. I managed to install ubuntu (10.04) by using the utility program that came with the live cd. With it I was able to boot from cd and use the live cd., there still seems to be some leftover files of windows in the hard drive where I installed ubuntu. So my question is, how can I reinstall ubuntu so that it will format the whole drive. Is there perhaps a similar utility program for ubuntu that lets me boot from a live cd or can I do the reinstallation just using the already installed ubuntu?
View 7 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately I have to use Win NT 4.0 everyday and in fact I am trying to create a system where I have many versions of NT on one disk. My plan is to store them in Linux and create a shell script to over write the first primarly partition which is ntfs. I am trying to install Xubuntu Koala on a logical partition and NT at the start of the disk. Grub is not loading NT well. I want to just use the NT booter and launch Linux from a floppy.
During the install there is an option to write grub to /dev/fd0 but it won't work for me. I tried both fat and ext2 formatted disks and I made sure they were present during the initial boot for auto mounting. I have verified that the floppy drive actually works.
How to install grub to my floppy.
