Networking :: Unable To Access Web Server From Computer Running Apache
Aug 2, 2010I am a newbie to linux of 4 weeks. I set up my first web server and it works flawlessly - when accessed from external network or from other computers on my lan. However, I cannot access it from the computer where the server is run on. I have found numerous people with similar problems but the flavour I am experiencing is somewhat different and no solutions I have found apply to it.I have two network interfaces on my server, eth0 (public static IP connected to internet) and eth1 connected to LAN 192.168.1.0/24 range. The server is 192.168.1.1
I added "192.168.1.1 www.server.com" to the /etc/hosts on the server and also on the other machines on the LAN. All the other machines can open website without any problem.
HOwever, the server itself only opens website if the address is localhost. Internal IP, i.e. 192.168.1.1. gets a time out and so does www.server.com.I do not understand why the record in etc/hosts doesn't point it in the right direction. It seems that when I open address 192.168.1.1 it still gets routed to the external network. I have seen using DNAT to deal with the problem but it didn't work in my case (maybe I didn't do it correctly). I have spent whole evening/night trying to sort it out, it's 4AM now, going to bed frustrated and angry (at myself hahaha). Still like linux very much, won't be going to windows anymore. Please help

I selected LDAPv3 and LDAPv3, hostname and SSL/TLS tried fetching base DN but it dint work.

Fedora Installation :: Moving FC10 From SATA To PATA - Unable To Access Resume Device
Jan 26, 2010I'm trying to move an existing FC10 install (created by someone else) from a 160GB WD1600AAJS SATA disk to a 160GB WD1600AAJB PATA disk (cursed trend of horizontally mounting SATA connectors at the end of the motherboard means the latest rev mobo doesn't fit in our enclosure!). I've used DD to copy the disk image from one to the other, but when attempting to boot, I get the following error:

That particular UUID maps to sda2, which is the swap partition. Interestingly, both the SATA and PATA disk come up as /dev/sda on the motherboard. I kind of grok that the UUIDs are substitutes for directly naming the disks, and that they're referred to in fstab, initrd-2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.i686.img, and in /dev/disk/by-* I'm guessing the problem is that the GUIDs (at least the one for swap) are no longer the same. How are they assigned to the partitions during boot?
I tried doing

and put that new GUID in fstab and into initrd-* (using some steps I found elsewhere on how to gunzip/rezip it).At that point, I get a kernel panic on boot

So I'm guessing that the other UUUDs have changed as well and I need to update them. How would I figure out what they are? I suppose I could change the references to /dev/sda*, but I didn't build this original image and I'm thinking whoever did had a good reason to go with UUIDs.

Oct 11, 2010I got an old PC I am using as a game server (Counter Strike and Left 4 Dead), it's a dual core Athlon 5000+ with 2GB Ram, the motherboard is kinda old and has a SiS Chipset with terrible graphics causing the video to flicker at somewhat high resolutions (anything above 1280x1024 will cause problems).I decided to add a Geforce 8400GS just so I don't have to deal with that terrible onboard VGA, upon installing the card I noticed the VNC is unusable, awfully slow over a 1gbps lan. I have installed the kmod drivers and it hasn't changed anything

Jul 16, 2010New Fedora 13 Install. I have Remote Desktop Enabled. I can access the machine from itself but not others on the network. I stopped the firewall, that did not work. I looked in hosts.allow and hosts.deny, no entries there. The vino server is running. There is nothing in /varlog/messages, dmesg or /var/log/secure, at least nothing I could find related to vino. What else can I check? The conf file in my home folder looks exactly like one on another machine where it is working. forgot to add the message I get when I try it from a remote machine is "The connection to host 192.168.1.100 was closed". So it appears something is actively rejecting the login.

Jan 10, 2011We have a fedora 10 server that the company connects to with other computers in the office. The file everyone access, public_share has no restrictions to the people that use it. We have another file, art_share that is password protected and everytime someone wants to access it they must login with it, but there are only 3 people out of the 15 that need to access it. Everyone needs to access public_share at some time.
My question is: is there a way to limit the permission for certain remote users to public_share so that they cannot write or execute, but at the same time allowing others full permission? I tried to do use chmod, but then it changes everyone's permission (I assume because of the remote access).

Apr 11, 2011I'm trying to access a remote computer by tunnelling VNC through ssh. I've used VNC for years, but never through ssh. Both computers are running Fedora 14, installed by me. Doing a general Internet search, I found three articles, and they all had basically the same instructions. However, they don't seem to work. Here's what I did. Call my local computer "computer A," and the remote computer "computer B." I installed vncserver on B using yum:
(1) yum install tigervnc-server
(2) Then on B I started the server:
vncserver The first time you do this, you're asked to set up a password. Everything else was automatic. I did nothing to /etc/sysconfig/vncservers.
(3) With vncserver running on B, on A I issued the following command:
ssh -L 5901:localhost:5901 username-on-B@IP-address-for-B After giving the password, this logged me into a terminal session on B.
(4) At that prompt on B, I issued this command:
vncviewer localhost:1 According to the tutorials I found, this is the last step. The desktop window on B should open. It does not work. The following error was given: vncviewer: unable to open display "" What am I doing wrong? How does one tunnel VNC through ssh?

Mar 30, 2011I'm trying to set up a computer to allow a specific samba user to access and write to a folder on the web-server without any luck. I've tried creating symbolic links in the users home to the folder (/var/www/html/something) on the web server and from the server to a directory in the users home but neither seems to work. I haven't seen any errors from SELINUX either but I'm kind of stuck. Also tried adding a directory section and alias line to the httpd.conf but after doing that apache wouldn't start so I'm not really sure how this would be done properly.

I want to start x through ssh and then log in through vnc, but I get prompted to type in my password in gnome before I have a change to login. Which is a problem because you need to be at the box to enter the password. Is there a way to authenticate this through ssh or give vnc automatic keychain access?

Sep 1, 2010I've got a USB Epson Perfection1200 (usb-id: 04b8:0104) connected to my Fedora 13 x86_64 system. The scanner works fine for me, the console user. If someone logs in to the system via "ssh -X ..." and starts "xsane", xsane reports that no scanner is available.
Googling turns up countless recommendations, mostly identical, which pretty much say:
1. find usb device (lsusb)
2. find bus and dev IDs
3. chmod 666 /dev/bus/usb/BUSID/DEVID
this is a best a miserable hack. I would like to know how to adapt the permissions that hald uses when a usb device is connected. Does someone understand this and can explain it?

Jan 19, 2011I've just upgraded my laptop to Fedora 14 and installed LAMP on it for a test environment. I've followed the official instructions to install but seem to have a problem that I didn't have on F13 or Opensuse. Each time I try to access index.php on localhost I get a permission denied message and an SElinux alert. I have tried 7 different solutions on various forums and just can't view anything in a browser.
/var/www/html has been set to chmod 777
/var/www/html/index.php has also been set to chmod 777
A standard user can definitely read and write to the above files/folder. Until I commented it out the Welcome/Test page was working perfectly.

I setup everything that I need to for mythtv however Im unable to get the remote to work. IRW doesnt return anything yet I know the driver is working as irrecord picks up the input. here are the steps Ive followed...
1) I can see the usb device ok....

2) I know it uses the atilibusb drivers, which Im able to prove by doing the following:

When I press keys on the remote I see the input is received on the screen.
3) I manually start lircd....

4) when I try irw, I dont get any output what so ever.......
I did modify my /etc/sysconfig/lirc however I had been trying gnome-lirc-properties to see if that could get it working, so Im not sure if its applied a wrong setting in the config file.

Aug 11, 2011I've tried on both 10.04 and 10.10. I apt-get install apache2, and put a simple "hello world" perl script in /usr/lib/cgi-bin, but when calling the script via the webserver I get a 404 "file not found" error.
/etc/apache2/sites-available/default already contained (out of the box)

Jan 14, 2009I am trying to setup my webserver and I am trying to make a website to run under suexec but somehow I cannot start my apache it directly fails and SELinux is giving me errors and don't really know what to do with it, it is giving me some command to type but not sure if this will make my server less secure. The SELinux error is as follow:

SELinux prevented httpd reading and writing access to http files. Ordinarily httpd is allowed full access to all files labeled with http file context. This machine has a tightened security policy with the httpd_unified turned off, this requires explicit labeling of all files. If a file is a cgi script it needs to be labeled with httpd_TYPE_script_exec_t in order to be executed. If it is read-only content, it needs to be labeled httpd_TYPE_content_t, it is writable content. it needs to be labeled httpd_TYPE_script_rw_t or httpd_TYPE_script_ra_t. You can use the chcon command to change these contexts. Please refer to the man page "man httpd_selinux" or FAQ [URL] "TYPE" refers to one of "sys", "user" or "staff" or potentially other script types.
Allowing Access:
Changing the "httpd_unified" boolean to true will allow this access: "setsebool
-P httpd_unified=1"
Fix Command:
setsebool -P httpd_unified=1

I have read the remote desktop setup and added port 6000 to firewall, added host name of server to xhost (nick@192.168.1.110). Added the line to /etc/gdm/custom.conf like in fedora guide (DisallowTCP=false). But i still get the error

Networking :: Fedora 10 - Unable To Ssh Out From Box To Remote Host?
Apr 10, 2009I have a box (boell) running Fedora 10 sitting behind a firewall at school. I am able to freely ssh to and from this box to other computers (minion) within that lan. Outside of this network I cannot directly ssh to boell - I must ssh first to minion, then I can ssh to boell. I've spoken with the sysadmin and he's verified that the firewall permits ssh freely - i haven't had any issues like this with other boxes of mine there, so this isn't any surprise.
I have verified that the hosts.deny file is blank, iptables permits ports 22 (and 80) and I didn't see anything obvious in the sshd_config. I tried a tcp dump on the external host and boell while attempting to ssh from the former to boell. The packets appear to be acknowledged by boell, but this fails to lead to a connection. I've tried this process with external hosts in different locations with the same result. I have made few modifications to the default installation for F10, so perhaps there is some default somewhere I have to change. In any case, below I have attached excerpts of germane files.

Fedora :: Unable To Set Remote Font Server With XSet
Nov 19, 2009I recently did a clean install of Fedora 11 (from Fedora 10). In Fedora 9 and 10 I used a remote font server so that I could launch HP OpenView over a VPN tunnel. The procedure would go something like this:
*connect to VPN
*xset +fp tcp/<hp_ux_server>:7000
*ssh -X user@hp_ux_server
*launch OpenView
OpenView requires the fonts that are installed on the HP-UX server, hence the need for the xset command. Now since the installation of Fedora 11, I cannot get the xset command to work.
xset fp+ tcp/<hp_ux_server>:7000
xset: bad font path element (#23), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax
I have turned off the firewall to make sure it wasn't blocking the request. But to no avail. I have also had two other people with Fedora 11 machines try this, they get the same error. Were there major changes in the X server from Fedora 10 to 11+?

Jan 20, 2011I am installing Big Brother on a CentOS 5.2 running the default Apache 2.2.3. When I try to access any web page I get the following error: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /bb/ on this server. Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS) Server at fmsubbnix Port 80 So far I have:
1) Set the Directory options to FollowSymLinks
2) Verified all directory and file permissions are at 755
3) Set permissions temporarily to 777 and received same error so I am assuming the issue is in a config file somewhere
4) in hhtpd.conf verified <Files ~ "^.ht"> is correct
5) verified the "default" directory is correct (/var/www/html)
I have read and tried several ideas in posts listed on the web but to no avail and am at a loss as to what to look for next..
