I reinstalled Fedora over the top of an existing installation which was having problems. My user directory (HomeOriginal-User) was saved and I'd like to restore it if possible, but as a second user as this new installation now has a different new user (HomeNew-User). I attempted to create a new user with the same name as the Original-User but when I logged in, there were error popups.

Used gparted to repartition hd:
Partition table entries are not in disk order
Installed Ubuntu 8.04. was then able to boot into either ubuntu or xp. next installed fedora 10. new menu.lst did not show ubuntu, only fedora and xp. had some lockups in fedora, and had to pull plug to reboot 2 or 3 times. replaced power supply. added ubuntu into menu.lst. boots into fedora and ubuntu fine. tried to boot xp, and get "Preparing System Recovery Option", then PC Angel appears, and it wants me to use the system restore option for xp.
Is there something i can do to recover xp without having to wipe the hd and reinstall xp, then reinstall ubuntu and fedora (and if i do all that, how can i be sure i don't end up with the same problem?
I was told to simply go into the fstab folder to allow myself permissions to execute files without becoming root, but instead of following it blindly I need a 2nd opinion. I cannot install a specific program because of configuration problems even though I downloaded all the gcc, g++ etc packages.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've now tried several times to install a fresh copy Fedora 13 i386 on my old Dell laptop, but each time I reboot the laptop I get the first-time welcome screen which asks you to create a user. When I re-enter my user info, it tells me that there's already a folder created for that user. After rebooting, I'm back to that screen. Does anyone know what's going on here?

without realising I started thunderbird from a root window, I set it up along with rules and about 2 hours finetuning.
I figured out how to get the icon on the top panel, but that is naturally started as my user gsm.
Is there an easy way of migrating the whole mailbox and subfolders form the root install to the gsm user?
Or is it easier to start from scratch?
I just installed Win7 (I need it for work -.-") and, of couse, it installed its boot loader and I can't boot F13 any longer. The question is, how do I restore GRUB from a F13 live installation media without destroying Win7?

So i'm VERY new at this, i need fedora for this research i'm starting. I have a dell and vista was installed on it, then i installed fedora 10 like it said on the fedora site from a boot disc. Now i have fedora but i don't have vista nor access to the memory it took up. I tried to restore to start over but i can't, and i need vista back.
Normally i would restore from the 10 G partition dell sets up for recovery but i'm not able to get to it, and i don't have my vista discs they're back at school.
What do i do?
I installed fedora 13 on my usb drive. I updated all. on rebooting, it shows an error message:

Is there a relatively easy way to restore the "previous" version of an RPM in FC10? The last set of updates killed my GUI and I'd very much like to get back to whatever I had before I got updated to:

So I just completed a clean install of Fedora 11 from the live CD. The only thing I've done to it thus far was to run the update manager once. Next item on the agenda was to configure my display to correctly handle my two monitors, but if I open up the controls and select 'Display' both my monitors instantly go blank. The only way to restore them is to use ctr-alt-backspace to logout. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon x800L, and right now I'm using the default ati driver that came with the system.

useradd -m <username>
now I logged in to Ubunutu but every operation need admistration passward I don't now it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed F9 for a friend. She wasn't getting any sound. I ran aplay -l, but got no sound card listed. I ran lspci -v, but got no sound card listed. However,the output of lspci -v said the computer had a particular motherboard. I Googled for it and was told it had an onboard sound card. That led me to the package called realtek-linux-audiopack-4.06a, which I installed. It included an installation script, which I ran.
The script didn't work to compile various files it was supposed to, but it did work to delete various files from my friend's system. Here are the bits of the script that removed files:

In the result, the failure of the compilation didn't matter, because lspci -v lied. She didn't have the motherboard shown, but a different one without an onboard sound card. Of the files deleted by the script.
I was able to reinstall libasound.so.2 and libasound.so.2.0.0, but I haven't yet tried to reinstall the other ones deleted by the script. Now, I want her to buy a sound card, but I'm afraid it won't work unless all the deleted files are reinstalled. I'm looking for guidance as to how I can reinstall the files deleted by the bits of the script I set out above, without completely reinstalling Fedora.
I'd like to clone a partition, and then restore it to a logical volume. I have all three operating systems at my disposal (Mac, Windows, Linux Live CD) What is the best way to achieve this. The partition I am trying to resize is only 200MB, so I can store it on usb if need be.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is on Debian Lenny 5.0.7 with a LXDE desktop. Using Root Terminal I have just been trying to mount a SATA drive NTFS file system using the command: mount -t ntfs /dev/sdb1 /dev/
unfortunately the /sdb1 should of been 'sdc1', I think, and what's happened is that my username and files have been moved somewhere else. PCMan File manager has ceased to work and open applications have ceased to be able to save files.
How do I discover where they went, and how do I restore them back to the original place of debian:/home/username/ ?
I'm about 8 hours in to learning Linux/Debian and desperately trying leave behind about 15 years of Windows use for something better. I'm used to troubleshooting electronics/hardware/all manner of things but the syntax here is, at the moment, a slippery slope.
Last night I started my computer and loaded my CentOS 5.2 partition (Windows 7 on the other partition). I was able to login to my account, but was given a gnome error that the panel buttons (i.e. weather, cpu monitor etc) could not be loaded. I then went to restart the computer (probably not the smartest thing to do) and was given some file errors upon shutdown that were related to /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00. After restart I was taken to a shell and ran fsck manually. It seemed to find a lot of bad blocks, so I repaired the /dev/VolGroup00 system and restarted. At this point CentOS seemed to boot normally, but upon loading of the login screen I get the error: Configuration not correct The configuration file contains an invalid command line for the login dialog, so running the default command. Please fix your configuration.
I cannot even log in as root. I get the error /usr/bin/gnome-session: error while loading shared libraries: libgnome-desktop-2.so.2: cannot open shared objects file: no such file or directory. I then went to a shell and ran: sudo yum install libgnome-desktop-2.so.2, but the package was already installed and up to date, so there was nothing to do. I am therefore stuck at this login screen with pull-down menus and tabs where I can change the configuration, add/remove users etc. So, my question is this: How do I restore my user profile so I can login....and if anyone has some insight, what caused this to happen in the first place? I should also mention, this all happened after plugging the computer into a new internet connection. No clue if that's even relevant.
I have system that was cloned from another system hence the user was same in both computer. I changed the computer name - to TANU. Then I added another user - BANU. I gave admin rights to second user. Logged out the first user DON- who is now only the desktop user. Before deleting the account through users and groups - I deleted the folder DON from home folder. I restarted the comp. unable to login. I had created automatic login for both users. How to restore the folder DON while using root shell.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a requirement to create more than one user (one initial user with sudoer privs and one "user" user that has no special privs) upon installation of xubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 (doesn't matter). My goal is to create a "automatic" installation process with as little user interaction as possible through use of preseeding and remastersys so that all the programs and their configurations are set upon first boot. If this is not possible, (which I don't believe it is, but it's Linux!) then I think I can make use of a bash script that will run on first boot of the operating system and then delete itself so that it does not run again. My questions are:
* Is there anyway to create more than one user upon or during installation?
* If no to the above, how would I go about making a bash script that runs on first boot and deletes itself after being ran?

I don't want to configure a user name and password--I want to leave that process to the buyer, similar to the experience of (for example) buying a new Apple computer, where it asks for a user name and password on first boot after the OS is already installed.

I am running Suse Linux Enterprise 10 on a laptop and by some strange reason the computer froze from overheating and I was forced to shutdown improperly. Once I restarted it booted right to the command prompt when it usually instead boots to the default user. I managed to get gnome running using the "startx gnome" command. But when gnome loads, none of my normal extentions load like my wireless driver, the sound driver, etc. how to restore gnome to automatically load the default user on start up or fix any other damage I might have done? lol

So, I get a late night call from one of the people I support with their PC. You know, the basic PC user who barely knows enough to be dangerous. I'm sure we all have friends like this, who we help out and keep Linux running for them. Anyway, he says Fedora prompted him to upgrade to Fedora 15 (from 13) and of course, he says OK. He usually says OK when fedora asks to update his software.
Now things are hosed, he can't get on-line and worst of all, he's running F15 with Gnome3 and can't find his way around or do the things he's used to doing. Why on earth would fedora prompt to upgrade to a new version via the net? (..btw - he said it took forever.. ) I'm sure this exact scenario will be played out 1000s of times and peeps like me will be wasting lots of time straightening things out after the fact. Seems to me Fedora should not prompt for full version upgrades. It's trouble waiting to happen and that kind of thing should be user initiated by someone who actually knows what they are doing, so as to avoid the scenario that just played out with me.
I wondered if there is a way for quick installation, what I mean to install without any details given by user, just type one command and installation will begin and untill finish. Installation will not ask any details from user (like the user is passing next next next ... to all installation screens).
