CentOS 5 :: Gnome-login Configuration - Restore User Profile?

Last night I started my computer and loaded my CentOS 5.2 partition (Windows 7 on the other partition). I was able to login to my account, but was given a gnome error that the panel buttons (i.e. weather, cpu monitor etc) could not be loaded. I then went to restart the computer (probably not the smartest thing to do) and was given some file errors upon shutdown that were related to /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00. After restart I was taken to a shell and ran fsck manually. It seemed to find a lot of bad blocks, so I repaired the /dev/VolGroup00 system and restarted. At this point CentOS seemed to boot normally, but upon loading of the login screen I get the error: Configuration not correct The configuration file contains an invalid command line for the login dialog, so running the default command. Please fix your configuration.
I cannot even log in as root. I get the error /usr/bin/gnome-session: error while loading shared libraries: libgnome-desktop-2.so.2: cannot open shared objects file: no such file or directory. I then went to a shell and ran: sudo yum install libgnome-desktop-2.so.2, but the package was already installed and up to date, so there was nothing to do. I am therefore stuck at this login screen with pull-down menus and tabs where I can change the configuration, add/remove users etc. So, my question is this: How do I restore my user profile so I can login....and if anyone has some insight, what caused this to happen in the first place? I should also mention, this all happened after plugging the computer into a new internet connection. No clue if that's even relevant.

I have a network set up that has been working for around a year with no problems but has now developed a login problem. The system was set up with a main server with all users on it and another PC located elsewhere that people could log onto using there personal login and password that then gained access to the account on the main server. This remote PC has now got the problem. When you try to log onto an account it comes up with the message "your session has lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself this could mean there is a installation problem or that you are out of disk space."
Error message says that no profile for the user can be found and it couldnt create per-user gnome configuration directory. I can log on as root onto the remote PC as it is obviously a local account but all the account on the main server are not accessible. From the root account I can see that the connection to the server is OK and I can actually log into the accounts on the server using the failsafe session so the physical network is OK.
I never built or designed this set up and to be honest I normally work with windows so its all a bit strange to me. Both PC's run Centos 5. I have checked the messages log and there doesnt seem to be any indication of a problem. Just that it stopped connecting from the remote PC. The accounts are all active on the main server itself and have no problems being accessed.

I am using the sudo command to log on locally as another user by the following command:
sudo -u theotheruser -s
or
sudo -u theotheruser sh
As I see it, this initiates a new shell with the mentioned other user.However, this doesn't load that users profile from his home directory.Is there a way to automatically read the users profile when login in with selected command? I am mostely interested in getting a working prompt when logged in.

I've been using Ubuntu with GNOME for the past few years and I'm looking at possibly switching to the KDE-based Kubuntu. I know I can have both DE's on my system and even found a tutorial on the Psychocats site for setting it up, but I have a question for the KDE gurus here. Can I safely use the same user profile between both GNOME and KDE or should I set up a new user for working in KDE? I haven't seen anything saying I can't but I really don't want to hose my GNOME settings in case I end up not liking KDE enough to use it on a daily basis.

I'm trying to get Xorg running on a Dell 2850.I can't get it to work.I installed xorg-x11-drivers via yum, and used both "Radeon / ati" drivers, including the default vesa.
Here are the main errors (error log file attached):

I installed KDE as an alternative desktop.(I still have gnome) When I rebooted my system it showed the KDE login screen. How do I restore the default Gnome login screen. I run Lucid.

I am trying Xfce in my Ubuntu Karmic installation. I just logged out and I get the Xubuntu login screen. I prefer the GNOME one, and xubuntu-desktop sets Xfce as default. I tried editing /etc/x11/default-display-manager and it already says /usr/sbin/gdm.

After login (Fedora 12, kernel 2.6.32.9-70) under the Gnome shell I see Gnome does not restore my setting (keyboard layouts, the size of terminal fonts). I can call Main menu only by the 3rd click. I touch MainMenu-System-Preference-keyboard and after the last action suddenly all fonts on desktop change his size, terminal window changes to my settings (font, size) and I may to change keyboard layouts by the way which I had choose. Two days ago the full update was made? no progress. How to force Gnome to do it (restore my settings) automatically?

I'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.

I am looking for a procedure to recover the initial installed state of my system with out over writing user data areas. The install procedure has the phrase "will remove all linux partitions" which interpret to mean data partitions, not just /bin and /. Additional background - Was attempting to build a 32 bit cross compile of Mozilla/Firefox on a x86_64 configuration and had a conflict with libgl. Online advice was to remove duplicate libgls from the system (that was bad advice). This led to running yum update.
When I restarted the system I know longer had wireless networking, ntfs mounts and possibly other features I had installed. Further, attempts to update, re-install, erase and reinstall have had no effect on the situation. My assumption is that I need to start with a clean install - which will be about 10-20 hours to reset all the additions I made. But I don't see another solution.

When configured to save and restore running applications (System, Preferences, Start-up Applications, Options) the restoration of Firefox instances prompts for profile.
In my case Firefox was running with several different profiles. Each one was started with "-no-remote" and "-P [profile-name]".
Any ideas? Would it be possible to auto-close only Firefox windows?

I have a problem concerning about NIS. I have set-up a NIS client, but I am not able to login as NIS-user by using GNOME or KDE login GUI. However, I was able to login as NIS-user by using a terminal that's open from a local account or root. Also the NFS seems working as well. This problem only occur on my new FC13 pc, and I don't have this problem on my FC10 pc. Both of my FC13 and FC10 PC have the same NFS and NIS setting.

what is the correct way/procedure to re-create a user home directory. For instance, on a Mac/Windows machine, i would just rename the existing user profile [home dir], and then just log back in as the user - job done. On OpenSuse/Linux, it seems it does not work that way..?! When i try to rename my home folder to say me.old via root, and log back in as me, i get all kinds of errors. Opensuse does create a new home dir, but it appears not properly.

I am new to Linux and wow, it did not take me long to run into a huge snag. I am running Suse Linux Enterprise 10 on a laptop and by some strange reason the computer froze from overheating and I was forced to shutdown improperly. Once I restarted it booted right to the command prompt when it usually instead boots to the default user. I managed to get gnome running using the "startx gnome" command. But when gnome loads, none of my normal extentions load like my wireless driver, the sound driver, etc. how to restore gnome to automatically load the default user on start up or fix any other damage I might have done? lol

We've changed /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf:[security]
AllowRoot=truebut still doesn't work.

I've got to purge GNOME from Jessie old netbook of my mom at least think so. It just run out of free space on 8Gb SSD. After upgrade GNOME is not accessible. System is stuck on logon 'GDM' screen without possibility to login for any user including 'root'. Here [URL] .... are given instructions on how to purge GNOME from installed system and install 'xfce' instead. Is this the right way to do it? And do I have to reboot netbook into 'Recovery mode' for it? URL warns about possible system crash during changeover. That is highly unwanted!here [URL] ....

I created a new user with command useradd (as root) :

And then set a password with command passwd (as root):

No Error!
When I logged out and tried to login with new user, I coulden't! (even after restart!)
I looked into /etc/passwd :

result:

There is no home folder in the path!

After fossicking around I can not find anything around that I can invoke in a terminal to configure settings in network-manager. The applet(?) on the task bar doesn't ask for a login, so options are grey/grayed out. The "program" in the applications menu is similarly grey/grayed out.
If it was a once off, then I suspect that it would be simple as login as root to start X, but I have a series of config files to edited each time of their initial use. also, there is the ongoing problem of vpn target switching.
woops; wheezy with xfce4 and everything is uptodate.

I have squeeze with gnome. Various apps let me log in as root when needed to but if I logout as a user and try to login as root it won't let me (won't authenticate password). I had this problem before and reinstalled Debian and definitely checked for it to allow me to do this and it worked for a while after new install. Apparently some update overrode my preferences. This is a major defect and may force me to abandon Debian. I don't use root often but I don't have any use for a operating system that won't let me use it. Anyone know how to correct this. I am not interested in using a terminal on a regular basis or ever for that matter.

I have installed xfce with synaptic and when i rebooting, i can't log in with my normal user on gnome and xfce, but i can it with terminal (ctrl + alt + fX), but i can login in gnome with a new user.
I have uninstall xfce and remove gnome and reinstall it but i still cant...
dpkg-reconfigure gnome-shell i think didnt change nothing...
I haven't /etc/X11/ directory...
On terminal, if i do startx, works, but i cant login gnome anyway...

Today I upgraded my system to the Nvidia driver 340.93 and 4.2.0-1 kernel on Debian Stretch.
While I wait for the gnome login screen to pop up I get the "Oh no something has gone wrong" message.
When I log in from another terminal and execute startx , gnome initiates and starts although settings like my resolution and other xserver settings are not loaded.
From the journalctl I believe the error is located in the following section:

I'm trying to prevent GDM/Gnome from turning the screen off prior to login. It's current behavior, under 3.14, slowly fades the screen out and then enters DPMS mode after 10 minutes.I have zeroed out the following dconf settings, under both root and user, but the default behavior persists.
