Fedora Installation :: DualBoot Windows Vista And 14 - Play All Media Formats ?

Dec 13, 2010

I am planning to buy a new system. I am planning to use fedora and windows vista (I have a legal copy with me and I dont want to buy a new one. That's why no windows 7 here).

How shoudl I proceed? Which OS to install first? I believe (from reading the threads) that I should install windows vista first and Fedora second.

The main question I have is this. I heard that HDD makers will no longer ship the current HDD's in Jan. Heard that 512 byte hard drive format is to be replaced by 4KB. I read somewhere that this can cause issues when we go for dual boot. Is this true? In that case, what steps can I take to ensure no problems occur?

I really want to use Vista only for running certain applications which do not run on linux. I have heard WINE can simulate a WIN environment. But is this really true? I mean, can it simulate WIN environments perfectly?

My next question is regarding dual HDD. I am planning to go for 2*500GB HDD instead of 1*1TB HDD... So will it be better if I dedicate one HDD to Vista and 1 HDD to Fedora? (I know it will be a waste of space since I will be using Fedora mainly and hardly aropund 10-20 GB for Vista. But I can access the Vista partitions)

Does fedora play all media formats? I know out of the box it might not.. But does having VLC help?

I dont see any firewall protection in Linux. I have heard of using IPTables, but then how efefctive are those? I will be doing many online transactions and I want my system to be secure. I know Linux is pretty secure. So should I harden the security with a hardware firewall?

I will be watching a lot of DVD movies, AVI movies and some HD movies as well. Does linux have issues rendering HD movies properly? I have read somewhere that fedora has issues while Win is good and Debian/CentOS (Not sure which one was mentioned) is even better. I had a pretty powerful config in teh past and yet I have seen that my Vista machine had trouble rendering a HD movie properly.

I will be buying AMD configuration along with an ATI graphic card (sometimes). Does Fedora have any driver issues?

Ubuntu Installation :: Tripleboot With Vista+wubi+dualboot?

Mar 10, 2010

Im currently a Windows Vista user, and would like to get test some linux distributions - Ubuntu is one of them, Ubuntu Studio is another. Iinstalling muliple OS's becomes overly complicated on my old vista machine. Therefore:

Can I simply turn a regular dualboot into a "fake" triple boot by adding wubi to Vista? Should wubi be installed before the dual boot distro or vice versa? Does it make any difference what the "real" dual boot distribution is? I would like to test Ubuntu Studio (not included in wubi) and OpenSUSE. Is either of them better to test first, because they do a better job in easily replacing an old distribution in a dualboot etc.?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dualboot - Install Vista Loader With 10.10?

Dec 5, 2010

I want to dualboot my HP laptop with Windows 7 and Ubuntu. The problem is that the harddrive had 4 primary partitions. So i had to delete the Recovery and HP TOOLS partions. I did that after creating my system recovry CDS. The "install alongside another operating system" option showed up. And i was really happy for about 1 minute until i discovered that it said Windows Vista loader! So now i have this:

sda 640GB harddrive
sda1 Windows 7 loader
sda2 Windows Vista loader

And when im trying to install a dualboot the Windows 7 loader dosent show up! It wants to install Vista loader but i dont have that operating system. I have read that 7 and Vista sometimes gets mixed up in GRUB can this be the case here? Is it safe for me to install Vista loader with Ubuntu 10.10?

Fedora Installation :: Dual Booting Vista And / 11 Wipes Out Windows Vista?

Nov 18, 2009

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

Ubuntu Installation :: Precautions To Take When Upgrading Windows On Windows/kubuntu Dualboot PC?

May 31, 2010

I have a Vista/Kubuntu dualboot, with grub2 as my loader. Because i have read that Windows likes to ignore something else present on the system and overwrite everything with itself. So i installed Vista, then Kubuntu. Now i want to upgrade my Vista to Win7. My question is - what should i do in order to keep my current dualboot intact (Grub2 as a loader, and kubuntu fully functional). I fear Win7 might even never ask me about keeping my kubuntu dualboot, just overwrite everything. PS: My bootinfoscript output

Ubuntu Installation :: Trying To Dualboot Windows 7 - Doesn't Recognise That Windows Is There

Jan 3, 2011

So I shrunk my Windows 7 partition. Now I have a 450GB partition with Windows 7 on it and a 50GB partition for Ubuntu that is unallocated space currently. So when I go to the setup for Ubuntu, booted into using my USB flash drive, it doesn't recognise that Windows is there. It thinks that the hard drive, all 500GB of it, is free space. Going into GParted, it also seems to think that the entire hard drive is a blob of unallocated space. According to tutorials online, this shouldn't be happening. It should recognise the two different partitions. So I went into Computer in Ubuntu (Live) just to double-check and indeed all my Windows files are there and I can still boot into Windows just fine.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Update With Vista Dualboot?

May 3, 2010

Ubuntu and Vista dual boot with grub being the primary bootloader. So, I just updated 10.04 today and when a window appeared asking things something along the lines of where to install grub, I didn't know what to do. So after reading the help box say that if you're not sure (which I was not) to click all of them, I did just that. Now when I go to the vista option in grub all that appears is a blinking cursor followed by bleak disheartening nothing until restarting. I can boot into ubuntu just fine and can still mount the windows partition from inside of ubuntu, but cannot boot Vista.

I had read other threads that usually asked for the user to run "sudo fdisk -l", to which the results are:

Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

[Code].....

Also someone directed another user to /mnt to look for windows related files, which in my case are there.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 With Dualboot To Windows 7 ?

Oct 21, 2010

I have a problem installing ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) with dualboot together with windows 7.

The situation is a follows: on the pc is windows 7 (home premium) installed, the windows bootloader is in the MBR and THIS CANNOT BE CHANGED (it's not a private pc).

I wanted to do this the way I have done with the previous ubuntu realeaes I used (8.04 and 9.04): install everything normaly and only tell the installer to install GRUB into /dev/sda5 (root-partition of the ubuntu-System). Then I used

Code:

To copy the bootsector in a file and integrate this file into the Windows Bootloader. The problem is: this file has only zeros inside (00hex), so it seems, that there is no GRUB written into the bootsector of the linux-partition.

The whole procudure works without any problems using Windows 7 and ubuntu 9.04, but I want to have the new release of ubuntu!

Installation :: Unistall Windows Vista From An Ubuntu / Vista Dual-boot?

Mar 18, 2011

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

Fedora Installation :: Windows Vista Partition Is Broken ?

Nov 2, 2010

I have a Gateway PC, that came with two partitions(not it is more): Vista + Recovery

I just downloaded and installed Fedora(latest image found on the website)

1. Re-sized Vista Partition to 650 Gb(using utility that came with installation), got 50 Gb free space

2. Installed Fedora on Free space

Decided to boot back to Windows(to check if it was left intact) , Windows boots into Recovery mode. It can't find the partition !

Fedora boots up fine. When my PC starts, it give me message that I have 3-5 seconds to choose what system to boot. Disk Utility shows that my HD is split into multiple partitions.

Really need to get back my Windows Partition. All my work is on it.

Fedora Installation :: Boot Windows Vista From F14 Grub

The only problem is that when I choose Other in the Grub boot menu my Windows Vista goes straight to the recovery screen and does not boot. I don't want to do a point recovery. Is Vista not running because I shrunk it or because of some configuration that I did not add in the Grub files. How to solve this problem and get Vista running properly from the dual boot menu?

Installation :: Dual Booting Windows Vista And Fedora 11

Apr 11, 2010

I had a fresh copy of Windows Vista installed (original from the factory)- and I followed a document of dual booting - however I think I did some mistake or automatic skip of install Grub boot loader-

Now my fedora 11 is running smoothly but windows vista is gone or does not boot - I don't have any boot disks- they give examples having floppy disk a boot disk- my laptop doesn't have floppy drive- I guess I could manage in cd or flash drive.

I see my computer's config in fedora desktop as
computer:///250%20GB%20ATA%20WDC%20WD2500BEVS-6.drive
computer:///250%20GB%20ATA%20WDC%20WD2500BEVS-6-1.drive
computer:///PIONEER%20DVDRW%20%20DR-KD08HB.drive
computer:///root.link

I noticed that the partition NTFS still exists and it has not been erased. I did install linux on hda5 since hda1 was partitioned with NTFS

Is there any manual and precaution to be taken while doing the same dual boot system ?

Or is it possible to have dual boot with the present config- although i am ready to install fresh window vista and fedora as my dual booting systems...

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing Windows XP Dualboot - Error Along The Lines Of A Missing/corrupt Hal.dll

Jun 30, 2010

So I have a single hard drive with two partitions, and I am trying to install a dual boot of Windows XP and Ubuntu. However, I am having an issue installing the Windows XP component.

I keep getting an error along the lines of a missing/corrupt hal.dll after the first restart in the install. This has happened every time I tried to install windows XP, from several different discs, all of which I have confirmed to work on another computer.

I have tried several things for fixing this, from repairing the MBR and boot.ini to replacing hal.dll from hal.dl_, and nothing works. However, Ubuntu 10.04 installs and boots properly.

What I can do to get Windows to install properly?

Fedora :: 13 Windows 7 Dualboot And Hard Disk - Complete Loss Of All My Data

Oct 11, 2010

Last time I installed Ubuntu in a dualboot configuration with Win7 on one of my machines, my entire boot sector and Windows install got corrupted, resulting in a complete loss of all my data and requiring a fresh install of Windows.

I looked into this a bit after the fact, and it seemed to me it was due to conflicting hard disk geometry between Linux and Windows.

My question is, how likely is this to happen with Fedora? Is this because of Ubuntu? A bad install? Is there someway I can avoid this from happening when I install Fedora if it will happen?
