Fedora Installation :: Partition Does Not Start On Physical Sector Boundary?

Aug 22, 2011

fdisk -l: Disk /dev/sda: 750.2 GB, 750156374016 bytes.

[Code]...

I've tried other installations, but I always get errors like this. /dev/sda 5, 7 and 8 are occupied by PCLinuxOs. /dev/sda 9, 10, 11 and 12 by Fedora. I made room for Linux installations by GParted (last version). Really, I made no errors. The installer of PCLOS is a bit strange: it changed the NTFS partition sda5 in sda 6! In a previous installation with Fedora and Kubuntu only the extend partition sda 4 complained about not starting on physical sector boundary. The hard disk is Western Digital with Advanced Format. Probably this is the cause of the problem. The systems are snappy and responsive. I do not encounter any problem. What to do? Ignoring the problem or reinstalling? May be it would be better to get rid of PCLOS and to dual boot Windows with Fedora?

Fedora Installation :: 10 - WDE And Dual-Boot - Boot Sector Is Occupied By WDE Software (TrueCrypt)

May 17, 2009

I currently have XP installed on a NetBook (Samsung NC10), and would like to run Fedora on it. I'm currently looking at putting Fedora onto a flash memory card to test it works OK on the hardware, before installing it to the hard disk. The problem I've got is that the boot sector is occupied by WDE software (TrueCrypt). Will this pose a problem for dual-booting XP with Fedora, or will GRUB move the boot loader in the usual way?

Fedora Installation :: Error, Saying I Had Bad Sector(s) The Error Told Me To Run Chkdsk /f /r In Windows, Then I Could Run Ntfsresize With -b, (in Linux)

Feb 22, 2009

I have the DVD installer of Fedora 10, i want to dual boot with windows vista. well i get up to the partitioning part of installation (in anconda) and it asks me how i want to partition it... i wanted to re size my partition and create the default format, so i keyd in 70GB and Okay. then it came up with an error, saying I had bad sector(s) The error told me to run chkdsk /f /r in windows, then i could run ntfsresize with -b, (in Linux) well i did all those steps, and shrunk /dev/sda1 to 70gb (/dev/sda2 is my recovery partition) i have a 140 gb hard drive, but can't find the unallocated space anywhere!

when i booted windows, it ran a chksdk, like it should, and in my computer it said that it had been shrunk (because the pie graph showed a capacity of around 70GB) When i go into windows disk management it says no unallocated space, just one big partition (and a 8gb recovery partition) this is the same with GParted on puppy linux, GParted on fedora 10 (live cd) says there is no drives I can mount or unmount and same error on partition logic... in EASUS partition manager i get told that there is no unallocated space, in the fedora installer there is only /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. Does anybody know.. how to install fedora on this partition, or get rid of the partition and repartition it another way. when i click on the option to remove all linux partitions and create default format, it errors and says it cannot make another primary partition, then says there is no room for /boot. and i can not proceed.

Fedora :: Hard Drive Reallocated Sector Count Errors?

Jul 10, 2009

I just upgraded to Fedora 11. (I decided to give 64bit a try and I am extremely impressed. Not one problem at all! Kudos to the devs.) Whenever I log in I get the Palimpsest Disk Utility telling me two of my hard drives have a reallocated sector count.I have two 1.5Tb Seagate drives (model #: ST31500341AS). One is a backup of the other. On the first disk the disk utility tells me I have 22 reallocated sectors and 53 on the second. I've been on Google on discovered that there is no easy way to fix this and that a few bad sectors are okay but too many is a sign of imminent drive failure. This obviously concerns me because both my main drive and its backup are showing errors.

I went to Seagate's website and downloaded their diagnostic software (Seatools for DOS) and it passed both of these drives. So, questions: is it possible that Fedora is giving me a false positive? If not, is 22 and 53 sectors something to be concerned about? If so, should I contact Seagate and see if I can pull warranty on these drives? Is there a way to repair this damage?

Fedora :: Overheating And Bad Hard Drive - Warning "reallocated Sector Count"

Aug 3, 2009

Upon installing Fedora on my Samsung NC10, I loved it. It feels stable and isn't cluttered with pointless apps. However I was immediately greeted by Palimsest Disk Utility warning me that the 'reallocated sector count' on my hard drive is going bad. I'm not too sure what any of it means but here's the statistics;

ID: 5
Attribute: Reallocated Sector Count
Current: 100
Worst: 100
Threshold: 10
Value: 1 sector
Status: failing
type: pre-fail
status: updates

It also says the temperature is 46 degrees yet the netbook's taken to being very, very hot around the touchpad and under the hard drive.

OpenSUSE :: GCC C++ Compiler Installation - Repositories In The Application Sticky Only Applied To Installations Through 11.3

I am looking to install a c++ compiler. I run 11.4, and was told to look in the Software Manager for easy installation. I have no repositories installed, as the repositories in the Application sticky only applied to Suse installations through 11.3. Ubuntu Installation :: No Boot Sector - Hit F1 To Retry

May 11, 2010

I have a rather puzzling error. I recently purchased an usb external hard drive with the intent of installing Ubuntu on it. I have had great success with installing various linux flavors on usb thumb drives but I need a little larger space for engineering applications that I use. Anyway, I removed my laptop's internal hard drive and installed ubuntu 9.10 on a recently formated external hard drive. Everything worked fine at first. Upon restarting I get an error that says "no boot sector" and it asks to hit either f1 to retry. When I hit retry, Grub loads most of the time. Occasionally it does not work. Is Grub just not installing correctly? I searched for this error but I found nothing that directly applied.

Ubuntu Installation :: Win7 Has Overwritten Boot Sector?

Apr 21, 2011

I have been running a dual boot system with Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit with the dual boot selected by Grub (placed y an Ubuntu install).

Recently I have installed Window 7 Home on a spare disc. My Bios allows me to select which disc to boot.

The Win7 installation has overwritten the boot sector on the WinXP/Ubuntu dic so that it is now not bootable.

I can sse all my Ubuntu files with a Live Linux Disc, so I can get all my files back.

Is there any easy way to re-install Grub or should I just do a clean install of Ubuntu, perhaps to a blank partition?

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 - Loading VM / Error Reading Sector

Sep 1, 2011

I created a boot disc (USB drive) with Ubuntu 11.04 and tried to install it on my Gateway GT5012 desktop running Windows XP. It gets to the part where I can "Run Ubuntu from this USB," and I select it. The screen shows "loading vm/linuz..." or something like that, and then the entire screen turns into dots.

One time, when trying to boot from the drive, it brought up
"CHS: Error 0201 reading sector 1418005 (88/68/3)
EDD: Error 4200 reading sector 1418006"

I ran this same USB drive on another computer (also running XP), and it worked just fine, so I really have no idea what's going on. If it matters, the computer it worked on had Internet access, this one didn't. It says "Loading /casper/vmlinuz..." and then goes to the screen of flashing dots.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Fails To Be Written In Boot Sector / What I Need To Do?

Nov 21, 2010

I am a complete noob at this and I need a hand. I was about to throw my computer out of the window when I decided to throw the windows out of the computer so to speak. So, I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and tried to install. I had a grub rescue after the installation (file system unknown), which I have seen discussed here. Being the noob that I am I decided to try 10.04 because it said it had full support. With this install I get a similar error during installation: grub cannot be installed in boot sector.

So, basically there is an issue with grub and the boot sector. I checked in my BIOS options to see if there was an option that prevented the writing of a boot sector or something, but I have not been able something like that. So, I am wondering if it is possible that Ubuntu does not really erase/format the selected disks or something, leaving any difficulty there.

Does anybody know? Or better yet: what exactly do I need to do a manual grub install?
