Fedora Installation :: F11 Can't Install / Resolve This?
Jun 13, 2009
Downloaded the torrent first, burned to a new DVD-RW, and tried all install options I could think of. Then downloaded to file, burned to another new DVD-RW, same result. This morning I downloaded the Live CD, and it got all the way to the blue screen just before the login page, and stuck there. I finally gave up and reinstalled Fedora 10 again on my drive. The problen seemed to be with a missing or corrupted package, although I can't remember exactly remember which one. My machine is a custom one, Nvidia Gforce, and an Elite Group MB. F10 runs fine, no problems at all. Is this a commom problem with 11?

I'm trying to dual boot 9.10 with Vista on an HP Pavilion Slimline (AMD64). I've tried both booting from a disk and using Wubi, and neither has worked. Booting from the disk takes me through the screen where I can choose to try Ubuntu without installing, but after selecting that, the desktop didn't load, the screen just went to black.
I decided to try Wubi, and it went well enough. Everything in windows worked, and upon rebooting, it was able to finish checking the installation. After one more reboot, I selected Ubuntu from the Windows boot manager, and then the grub command prompt appears. I can't seem do anything after that except reboot.
I have no idea what's going on with this computer.

I recently decided to give Ubuntu another try after a break for a while, and have hit a bit of a road block The live CD booted fine, ran, installed, all flawlessly, so it's now a dual boot with Windows 7. Only issue now is when trying to load the HDD installed Ubuntu, it just hangs on a black screen, no HDD activity light or anything. First up my specs code...
Next, what happens in detail:
Machine posts, loads boot loader with OS options. Whether choose Ubuntu or recovery Ubuntu, it always hangs on black screen straight after that.
Next, what I have tried to fix it so far:
Tried pressing 'e' and replacing the quiet splash with nomodeset, same result with both normal flavour and recovery.
Tried copying the xorg.conf from the live CD filesystem to X11 folder on main system drive. Also tried editing it to try and use generic vesa driver.

I'm getting a bit tierd of linux right now.. I can't get the CD, with netinstall on, to start.
I've tried different harddrives and burned it several times at different speed and so on. I've tried to just i386 and amd64, both gives the same error:
isolinux: Disk error 32, AX = 42B0, driver 9F
The harddrives that I got is small 10-80 gb, so they are a bit old.. but they worked the last time I've tried to install (until I got a grub loading error)
I'm not sure what to do at all. Tried to search on google and here without finding something

I had F15 installed in my hard drive, I liked it very much and everything was going great until I installed that damned XP in another partition (same HDD). Now here is the problem.
This XP does not let me choose the OS I wish to run at the boot-time and just boots itself. I am a beginner with Linux OS.

I've replaced Ubuntu 10.10 with F13 and can't connect to the Internet.
I'm using a WiFi connection to my router. I receive an IP address via DHCP. I can connect to the router's web configuration interface, 192.168.2.1. Same with my NAS web configuration interface.
I've also tried with Live CD (F13 and F14beta). Same thing: receive IP, connect to router's web interface, can't connect to Google.
As a check, I tried Ubuntu Live CD and I can connect to the Internet.
I've also tried F13 Live CD on my laptop. Can't connect to the Internet.

When I boot the ubuntu live cd (9.10) and attempt to install it only gives two options at the partitioning screen. One is to use the whole disk and the other is to manualy assign partitions. I told it to resize one of my partitions and created 18GB of free space. However, it tells me this space is "unusable". It wouldn't let me do anything with it and I used windows vista disk manager to add it back to the original partition. I have one hard drive with four partitions. One is a restore partition, one windows partition, one storage partition, and one that says xp although i don't have xp installed. It might be used by the acer restore program. It's an acer aspire 6920.

After installing Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS, I restarted my machine. I removed the disk, but now when it starts, it never gets to GRUB. Instead, it just takes me to a black screen with a blinking cursor. I can't type in anything and holding shift doesn't take me to GRUB.

I've just updated my desktop to F13 using preupgrade but now grub won't boot it. The upgrade seemed to go OK, and none of the disk partitions should have changed as far as I'm aware, but now I get an error
VFS: Cannot open root device "UUID=xxx" or unknown block(0,0).

I'm new to these forums. I'm coming from using Ubuntu for a couple of years and now I'm trying to switch to Fedora.
I installed F10 yesterday and all went well, more or less. The system used to freeze randomly but after updating, everything seemed to work fine (I haven't tried audio yet, though).
I have an X1250 integrated graphics system that's working fine in Ubuntu. After playing around with F10 for a while I decided to download and install the latest ATI drivers from AMD's site. The installation posed no problems, but when I reboot the system it will come to a black screen at some point and freeze there.
I searched the web a little and came to this: http://www.fedorafaq.org/#radeon, but I'm not sure if that's current or old news. If it's current and those ATI drivers can't be installed, I'd appreciate some help about removing them.

I'm trying to install Fedora 10 from a USB memory stick on which i've installed Fedora-10-x86_64-DVD.iso and, early in the process of configuring the installation, i get messages about both my IDE hard drives having unrecognizable partition tables:
"The partition table on device sda (... my disk data ...) was unreadable. To create new partitions it must be initialized, causing the loss of ALL DATA on this drive."
Same for sdb.
My PC currently runs Fedora Core 4 (yes i know i should have gotten around to upgrading my OS earlier) and yes it recognizes both hard drives just fine.
The answers I've found on the web suggest to backup my drives and repartition. I'm not too hot on that "solution".
explain why a F4 partition table is not recognized by F10?
BTW, I've recently upgraded my motherboard, processor, DVD drive, regrouped both my IDE drives on the same bus, ... I consider it a miracle F4 still runs on this PC (although F4 does not support the motherboard's graphics card, so no X11).

I have recently updated my Fedora 11 installation which replaced my older 167 kernel with the newer 217 kernel. However, the 217 kernel will not boot completely. It will show the splash loading screen, and then will switch to a rapidly blinking cursor. This cursor blinks for about 5 seconds and then disappears. I can access terminals using ALT+F2, etc. I can log in to these terminals, but init commands do not complete (something about a binary handler). I'm not sure if something is conflicting with an update to X or what is wrong. The most recent kernel that I managed to get to work was Kernel 167, however I cannot find this kernel for download.
Sys info:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
3GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 8600GT with proprietary drivers
320GB Hard Disk with windows and linux partitions
Fedora 11 32-bit i586

I am trying to install Fedora12 on a usb hard-drive, the first problem I encountered was that the hard-drive would not boot stating "kernel panic: unable to create root device", this is just using the standard fedora 12 install and mostly clicking next (although I add my vista to the grub and tell grub to install to /dev/sdc which is the location of my usb hdd).
I have also tried livecdtousb (wont boot in stick and wont recognize removable hd as removable)
I have tried setting up disc encryption and installing with no LVM.
The drive has this same problem with ubuntu 9.10 however ubuntu 8.10 installs perfectly and I am guessing earlier versions of fedora will too. The problem is that I would like the kernel features of Fedora 12 (mainly modesetting) without this issue.
I have played about with grub and quite like disabling LVM and using the uuid of the drive to select the root partition, my boot partition has 500mb, I have a 2gb swap space 50gb ext4 root partition & 27gb fat32 partition code...

I have installed open office using yum install.
To install OpenOffice you can use yum like:
connect to the internet
open a console
su -
root password
yum install openoffice.org-base openoffice.org-calc openoffice.org-calc openoffice.org-draw openoffice.org-draw openoffice.org-writer
(all on one line)
This will install the man packages for Openoffice. To see all packages available for OpenOffice use:
yum list openoffice*
I am running fedora 14.
I have no openoffice icons on the desktop, or items in the menus.

I've installed the Awesome WM using "sudo yum install awesome" (as described here https://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Awesome-3-fedora ). I can also log into awesome, but nothing works! I can open the menu on the top left of the screen, but when I click on e.g. "Open Terminal", nothing happens. Same thing for all other menu options except "Shut down" which logs me out of Awesome. I've also tried the terminal shortcut, but nothing works.
Has anyone an idea how to make it work?

I upgraded from F11(x86_64) to F12 with no reported errors. (expected an update session to follow, but it didn't.)
Tried a manual "yum update" and it aborted with a notice that libssl.so.8 was not found (required by python-2.6.2). I didn't find anything useful at wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumFaq.
The DVD installs python-2.6.2-2 (8/21/09) and openssl-1.0.0-0.10.beta3 (10/16/09). /usr/lib/libssl.so.10 is a symbolic link to libssl.1.0.0. libssl.so.8 is not found, really.
I thought of replacing openssl with one from F11 but it was required by too many packages - couldn't remove.
I tried to find a later rpm of python, but couldn't locate any Fedora directories with individual packages.
I've searched the web and the forums. What am I missing?

After reading a lot about Ubuntu I decided to try it today. But despite all the reading and searching I have done I cannot get it to install to any of my machines. I tried almost all the current versions, in all the machines and I am ready to give up. As a last resort I decided to take the last futile installation on my main pc and try to ask for some help. I downloads (3 times) Ubuntu 10.10, I have tried installing it with Wubi, Cd , USB and failed miserably. Most of the time it will boot in the (?) purple desktop and stop there. A few times. a window popped about a wired connection and last time I got a screen looking like this code...
My pc runs on a q6600 , 4gb RAM, nvidia 295gtx. Motherboard is the old P5k. My HD is partitioned in 3 smaller parts, 1 for windows 7, 1 for downloads and 1 for ubuntu in which i tried in vain to install.
I tried the noacpi noacpi stuff when I was using Wubi but I have not found how to start the live cd/USB since the downloadable version is apparently the alternate one only. I tried downloading it 2 more times from the main page, but no success. What am I doing wrong here?

I have been FRUSTRATINGLY trying to upgrade to 10.04 because I was impressed with it, however, as I have predicted, it was a headache. In all actuality, it is WORSE than a headache. Both my desktop and laptop are now decommissioned, (I have Windows 7 on the 2nd laptop, and since Ubuntu/GRUB hasn't installed completely, it won't boot--I have to fix that TOO) leaving me to depend on an old Pentium III in the closet to download and burn CD images, which is STILL failing. Unfortunately, I have burned 9.10 on a rewritable CD, which I erased long ago. I have NO computer now, other than the old Pentium III which was sitting in a closet. I am tired and want to go to sleep, but I am the kind of person who finishes things that were started.
My problem is that I have downloaded (and burned to a CD) Ubuntu 10.04 TWICE, because it's failed to install. I thought that the ISO was corrupted, so I downloaded it and installed it AGAIN. Same thing. I tried making a Live USB Flashdrive install--same old, same old. It's 12:00 MIDNIGHT (Pacific time) and I can't bear to stay up this long like some of you young ones can. Thank goodness for caffeine
I KNEW that I shouldn't have done this, but I went ahead and proceeded to "upgrade". Well, the actual upgrade (thru Ubuntu Update tool) failed, so I decided to do a clean install. Thought that the process, from start to finish, would take 30-40 minutes, but was I wrong! I have been stuck with this issue since 7 P.M.!
Well, to cut to the chase, is anyone else having issues with burning/installing from their own CDs? This Pentium III is only running Fedora Core 6 with 512MB of memory, so it can get a download/burn job done OK. I am using the K3b burner in Fedora and no errors regarding a corrupted ISO appear. Why then, won't it install, after downloading and burning two separate ISOs?

I have downgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 10.04. I've had some bumps along the way and finally was able to install 10.04 successfully. Right now, my computer will not boot from the HDD and will only boot from the USB drive that the LiveCD is on. When I reorganize to set HDD as primary boot, i get:
id-laptop login:
id-laptop password:
and I can put that in but then it just gives me a command line that says"id@id-laptop:~$
How do I get it to boot from the HDD instead of from the USB without running into this problem?
If I resequence the boot to HDD as number two, it will juts go into the LiveCD mode. Am I supposed to reinstall 10.04 again? I know 10.04 was successfully installed because it said it was and it needed to restart so i hit the restart button. It also had my old desktop picture there and all my files AND i checked the system info before restarting (it confirmed that lucid lynx was running).

I have recently created a KDE 4 desktop using suse studio, it boots up fine on my machine, but doesn't shutdown!!
On my mum's laptop, which I will be using it most on, (it's windoez) it won't start KDE 4 at all! I can use the console, but I wanted to impress her with the amazing GUI and Compiz. And you can't make presentations or browse the web in a console, can you?
And sudo poweroff and sudo shutdown -h now don't work either!
