I used 'preupgrade' to upgrade from Fedora 13 to Fedora 15. After some problems during reboot, Fedora 15 finally finished the "Upgrade to Fedora 15" step and I was able to successfully boot into Fedora 15.
But my desktop items from Fedora 13 are gone. While the new GUI is nice I would like to recover my desktop items from Fedora 13. How do I do that and put them on the main Window desktop of Fedora 15 ?
I am having this weird problem when I turn off my PC and then when its turned back on there are items on the desktop that were not there before (they had been previously but been moved to another folder).Also partitions that I dont want to mount are suddenly mounted and I have to umount as root. I think I have some problems in my grub2 installation since installing 10.10. I ran the boot info script, and can see that there are problems but I get nervous messing with grub
View 7 Replies View Relatedlong ago when i upgraded from jaunty to lucid, everything was fine when suddenly one day i found my desktop flooded with my home folder contents. i was trying a lot of juglery but no result. finally i went to gconf-editor and unchecked the show desktop menu on apps > nautilus > preferences.recently i upgraded from lucid to maverick. felt the problem will b resolved but it is still such.

View 6 Replies View RelatedJust upgraded from FC10 using the DVD using upgrade option. I got all the way through the upgrade with no problems. However, upon reboot, when I get to my login screen, I sign in with my username and password but I get an error about kstartup manager. I think the gist of the message was it is missing and I think the error # was 127 (I think). KDE will not start. I also tried XFCE, but it will not start also.
What should I do?
I tried doing an upgrade straight from fc5 to fc10. The upgrade seemed to go all right but once it was completed I've noticed some issues. My main issues are these:
1. After the upgrade all my desktop icons have disappeared and I'm not sure how to recover them. (this applies to all user account on a home machine)
2. When I click the right mouse button on the desktop I get no context menu but I do get the menu when I right click on my top or bottom menu bars.
3. When I try to launch any applications, games, etc., I see the icon show up in the bottom menu bar for a few seconds but then it disappears and the application never launches.
Those are the primary problems I'm encountering right now. I know the files in the home directories are still there (I did CTRL-ALT-F2 into a terminal and logged in as root. Normally I would've done CTRL-ALT-F1 but when I did I saw acpid messages and no prompt.) I've looked through the forums here but nothing I came across quite seemed to fit my needs.
At least the DVD I downloaded a few days ago was nothing like the one that was downloaded on release, most worked I'm missing a couple of important things on the gnome menus, nothing on system>preferences or Admin for printing, I had to configure the printer directly with the CUPs admin panel. These no way to edit the menus, right clicking on the bar has no effect, and I haven't form menu-edit in the repos with yumex, or the gnome control pane. Have these been dropped in FC14 ?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm considering upgrading my old fileserver from ubuntu 8.10 to 10.4, but i've got single concern, I have a 5TB sofware raid 5, that i realy don't want to loose in the process. And since it's almost full (below 1TB free), i can't do a full backup.
Is there any problem in with this, if i do the upgrade? i have to upgrade 8.10 to 9.4 to 9.10 to 10.04?
First off, I have spent several hours searching this and other forums looking for an answer to this, and have tried several things, none of which have fixed this issue. Here is what I'm seeing:I performed a new install of FC12 on a Thinkpad R40, 512Mb RAM, with a 40Gb HDD, 38Gb useable, from a live CD. That leaves a little over 9Gb free for expansion. All went well with the install, but the post-boot upgrade would not complete due to an error with the abrt files. I found a thread discussing this and used the suggested method of performing the updates from a shell, which worked fine. There were LOTS of installations, updates, and replacements, and finally the shell returned "Complete!". After a reboot I was going through the Fedora_12_ User_ Guide.pdf and noticed many items missing from the System Menu as described in section 3.1.1.3 "The System menu". Another thread seemed to address a similar issue with su - then yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment", which I did. It updated over 870 items, then completed with no errors. At this point I logged out and back in, no change, and then tried a reboot, which also did not change anything. Finally, I'm appealing to the community.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just started using the Ubuntu Netbook Remix (9.10 Karmic) a couple weeks ago. I've added my own and removed a few of the default icons in the simplified, menu-driven desktop interface. However, the icons are in the order in which they were added (particularly in the "Favourites" tab. How can I rearrange or sort these icons?
I've tried right-clicking the tab and desktop, but no sort option appears. I've tried dragging the icons to the desired spot in the window, but that doesn't work either. Is there a control panel in the "System" tab that will let me sort the icons, or is this not possible in the netbook remix?
Recently, I'm having a problem with items not appearing on my desktop (at least not right away) after just being saved there, forcing me to either find them in a Konqueror window (they do show up there) or do some other unusual thing to make the desktop notice them. They used to, and as far as I know, they always should. For instance, I just took two screenshots with Ksnapshot, and told it to save them on my desktop. It saved them, but they didn't show up on the desktop. When I noticed that, I opened the desktop folder in Konqueror, and mainly to see what would happen, tried to drag the screenshot files from the Konqueror window onto the desktop (copying the files onto themselves). That made the desktop notice the files--they appeared. But of course I shouldn't have had to do it. What could be wrong?

Hate all you want, but I can happily state I prefer Ubuntu as an OS, but much rather prefer the style of OSX's desktop. I'm still finishing it up, and there are a few things that I am still to change.
As you can see, I have placed a shortcut to my HD on the right side, but whenever I download something, it appears on the left. I was wondering whether or not you are able to change the side of the desktop items appear on?
I added Kubuntu-Desktop components to my Ubuntu 10.04 system using Synaptic Pkg Mgr, with the mistaken expectation that I would then be able to toggle between Ubuntu and Kubuntu Desktops. Of course, when adding Kubuntu-Desktop components, the dependencies feature brought in around 8 or 10 items.
I tried to undo all of this, but I fear I may have removed one or two Kubuntu named packages which may be part of the original Ubuntu installation.
Also there remains a gaggle of applications, such as Dolphin, KNetwork Mgr, Konqueror, just to name a few.
The two-fold question is, (1) How can I get back as closely as possible, to my original, pure Ubuntu installation, short of a complete re-install; and (2) Is there a document out there which lists all of the packages that come standard with the Ubuntu installation.

The upgrade went fine and I was asked to restart my computer. I did so and was presented with the screen that says "Ubuntu" and 5 red dots. ok did an regular (not version change) upgrade on friends pc and now have no desktop?
Boot loads to console and can logon to console but startx fails, checking logs it says it can't load nvidia module. As upgrade had included kernal i tried to boot to older kernel but this failed with grub error.
I tried console install of nvidia-current and nvidia-module (not sure if correct name but was nvidia kernel module) but still no joy.
I can install 6.06 desktop, but would like to move to a 8.04 server. I know I can do an upgrade from 6.06 desktop to 8.04 desktop, but how about to server? cdrom issues and heartache associated with other means of alternate iso installs are beating me up.

The update went well, but after the reboot and login, the default desktop background is loaded, but there is no status bar to select programs, access system settings, etc. How can I fix the desktop to include the status bar so that I can use the system? I can right click on the desktop and it gives me options to create launchers, etc.

Grub loads fine after reboot (booting Windows works, Upgrade without errors). View 1 Replies View RelatedI used Kubuntus kpackagekit to upgrade to natty. The process started well, it downloaded everything and started to install 11.04. But then all of a sudden during Installing stage I got this error message:
"Distribution upgrade process exited with code 1"
and
"Your system might be unusable".
And it sure is unusable because after reboot I can only see Kubuntu 10.10 loading screen and
"The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present".
There also are options for either skip mounting or manually mount hard disks. I don't have a clue how to manually mount... I get same message if I try to boot to safe mode. Does this mean I have to go to clean install? I really don't want to do that because last time it took a couple of months to get ubuntu to co-operate well enough with my laptop.
I've just upgraded to Squeeze from Lenny using the instructions found here URL... After completing the upgrade and re-booting the system informed me that "gnome.desktop is not installed" and throws me into XFCE. Googling suggested trying apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment which I did. On reboot I no longer get the "gnome-desktop is not installed", but the login still throws me into XFCE.How do I get my gnome desktop back?

View 9 Replies View RelatedJust upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04.Under 10.10, moving windows, scrolling, and compiz's expo were smooth as silk with my Radeon HD 5450 using the fglrx driver. After the upgrade, these things are very choppy, to the point that it feels like I'm running without hardware acceleration. The weird thing is, the system tells me I have acceleration --- Compiz is still running and I'm able to use expo and other effects, glxinfo reports direct rendering, and the Additional Drivers control panel tells me I'm still using fglrx (I even tried re-installing it, to no avail). OpenGL screensavers work fine, and glxgears gives me 1550 fps. Could it be that compiz is somehow not using hardware acceleration, even though my driver offers it? This happens in both Unity and Classic desktop.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I fired up 10.10 this morning on VirtualBox as usual (running on Windows 7 machine), I got prompted to upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, so I followed the prompts and after about 4 hours or more, my vm restarted and says 11.04 is running, however, I never get to the Ubuntu desktop. Im stuck at some startup screen that shows the Ubuntu logo and I definitely cant see the System, Peferences, etc. menus at the top left.
One thing I came across is that 11.04 is designed for use with touch screen devices and 3D, and thus 3D acceleration is required in the VirtualBox settings, but even after checking that option and restarting I still couldnt get to the desktop.
Also, during the install I came to a step where I was prompted to discard files no longer needed at which point I agreed to have them deleted (41MB or so of files). Maybe I should have just kept everything.
Did I miss a step or is it not good practice to upgrade on a vm in this manner, meaning it's better to always download the .iso and do a fresh install?
I was having trouble figuring out how to upgrade my file server (running 9.04 x64 desktop) to 10.04 so I asked google. It led me to this webpage: [URL]... which told me to run this command:

It ran for a bit and now it says that it is running 10.04.2 LTS, but I am unable to get any updates. When I open the update manager it tells me "Not all updates can be installed" and says that I need to run a partial upgrade. When I hit partial upgrade it then tells me that "An upgrade from 'lucid' to 'jaunty' is not supported with this tool." This comp serves as my web/sql/file server so it's pretty important I keep it functional. Everything else seems to be working fine though which I can only assume is a good thing. Here's a copy of my sources.list:

I upgraded from FC11 to FC13 last night. The desktop has not been stable since. It will run for anything from 5 to 30 minutes before it locks up. Interesting, if I am already ssh'd in, I can perform commands, but a new SSH will hang, and if I try to SU to root in an already logged in ssh, it hangs.
However, I did finally manage to get the messages that were logged to /var/log/messages at the time of the desktop freeze.
Here are the messages. The first 3 about high speed usb may or may not be relevant. The freeze appeared to happen around the 4th message in the log below.
