I've been having trouble lately with firefox freezing. For awhile I couldn't figure out what was causing it as it seemed random. But I think I narrowed down the problem to the mplayer plugin. Whenever I go to a site that has streaming video, the mplayer plugin would start reading the stream, but then display "stopped". Now sometimes when it does this firefox would freeze, but sometimes it wouldn't freeze till I start mousing over my bookmark tabs, then it would freeze my entire desktop. I can move my mouse but not much else. I can do a ctrl-alt-backspace to reload the xserver. Has anyone else noticed this? Also, can some help me troubleshoot this. I've removed and then re-installed firefox and the myplayer plugin; deleted my .mozilla directory; changed profiles. Is there anything else I can do?

I've since rolled back and gotten flash working properly again, but Zotero isn't working. I figured out it was because java was being screwy and have been trying to repair it. I followed the instructions here first: [URL] and installed version 6 update 19. It came up as an add-on in firefox but didn't do anything. When I pull up a page with java on it the page just says it is disabled and I can click to install it. However, I then get was getting a box saying: "E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages." I have since removed update 19, done a complete removal in synaptic, and reinstalled JRE and the plugin by going to a page in firefox and clicking the install button. Now it still isn't under my extensions list in firefox, it says it's disabled on pages with java, and when I click to install it says I already have it. I'm running Karmic koala by the way.

I go back to the web page and the same thing happens again.In Ubuntu Software Center I see that package restricted-extras is installed.
I tried going through Tools / Add-ons in Firefox, but the list of add-ons wouldn't load at all that way.I also tried going to Adobe's web site, but for versions of Ubuntu 09 and later it offers an "APT" file instead of a .deb. Firefox asks what application to use to open an "APT" file and I don't know what to tell it... I'd be fine downloading a .deb or using apt-get or Ubuntu Software Center though.
Initially when I upgraded to Lucid I uninstalled openJDK and switched back to sun-java5 packages due to some application support limitations. Now I have to upgrade to sun-java6- packages. I removed the sun-java5 packages and installed the sun-java6 packages. Including the sun-java6-plugin.
I can see the plugin in aboutlugins in Firefox 3.6.10 however nothing (like webex or applets) related to java works. As a workaround I have used the Icedtea plugin which comes with open JDK and that seems to work. However I want to get the sun-java6-plugin working.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi used to be able to watch music videos from a local radio station website using firefox and mplayer with fc11. maybe the solution is to upgrade to fc12, since it seems to work fine on the pc with fc12, but maybe the problem is something easy to fix, and i can wait awhile before getting everything up on fc12.. -( also, with fc11, i can play the same videos using a newly installed version of google chrome. i am just trying to find out what causes this type of error and how i can fix it. if i go to www.kzsn.com and select the "on demand" tab, then select a video, i should see mplayer open up and the video play - i don't get the black box and no video, no sound.. as stated above, this works fine using google chrome, or using another pc with fc12. this website also has some videos that play via flashplayer. they also did not play in fc11 with firefox, but i was recently able to get them to work by downgrading to a previous version of shockwave (found that in another post). not sure if this has anything to do with the problem i am having, but thought i would mention it, just in case.. only other thing i can't seem to do with any release of fc (maybe linux in general) is watch movie trailers from the apple website (which used to work fine) - was wondering if anyone else can with fc11 or fc12?

I am trying to get Frostwire for Fedora 12 and the RPM download does not work, I have been checking the web the past 8 hours trying to find version 4.20.3 in RPM format but i came up with nothing. I have a prevous version of it so please do not suggest I get a older version or limewire because limewire has a totally different problem. I downloaded the .tar.gz file and I have no idea how to install it. I think I heard something about having to compile it but to be honest I am compleatly lost in doing this. I installed shockwave to try and get a game working. The game ended up not working correctly and shockwave installe da plugin to play flash content in Firefox. So now Firefox won't play flash content. I removed Shckwave but Shockwave left the plugin for Firefox. I cannot seem to getrid of it I even reintalled the flash plugin to no avil. So how to get rid of the Shockwave plugin from Firefox. Then I can reinstall the flash plugin.

Has anyone here gotten the Sun Java plugin (1.6.0_20) working in Firefox under F13? I'm using the Firefox 3.6.3-4 RPM supplied by F13, and I created the link in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins to ${JAVA_HOME}/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so as I've always done, but the plugin fails to show up when I check the plugins in Firefox. I installed some other plugins in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and they work fine, only Java doesn't work. It's weird because I've never had a problem getting the Java plugin to work in Firefox before this, and I've done it a million times.
I don't have the Fedora-supplied java packages installed, so it's not a issue of conflicting plugins. And the plugin does work in Opera. I also tried the 1.6.0_18 plugin from Sun, and that didn't work in Firefox either, though it works in F11. I can't figure out what's causing this just in F13. So far this is the only problem I've had in F13, everything else has worked great.

I have tried sever tutorials of this type (some slightly different) [URL]. However, I cannot get firefox to recognize the plugin. When I used the tutorial above I was also getting SELinux AVC denial warnings. If not clearly stated above, I downloaded the JRE directly from Oracle. I need to use the version from Oracle/Sun because the VPN client I have to use (from Juniper Networks) will not work with gcj or the openjdk provided from the default yum repositories.
