General :: Build Fedora Server - Wipe Clean At Initial Time - Root Directory?

Jan 25, 2010

I messed up the first installation of Fedora on my server. My setup is as follows: Fedora and Gnome - NFS system, No dual boot (Windows or anything) Fedora ISO DVD downloaded No kickstart or other tools. how to set this up, from the time I insert the disk and have it boot up (configged already to boot from it). I know how to wipe it clean at intall time. Is that the root directory? And, is /boot the actual boot directory? I'm just having a hard time uderstanding that. As I said, I just want a quick itemized list, step 1, step 2, etc, from partitioning, creating file system, mounting, etc. in the right order.

Ubuntu Security :: Best Way To Wipe SSD ?

Jun 8, 2011

I'm selling my Dell Mini 10 that came with Ubuntu on it. I never really used it much, and the only sensitive things on it were some PHP files with MySQL passwords that I can change on the server if need be. I'm not familiar with command line at all, so I'm having trouble figuring out the best way to wipe the SSD. I already reinstalled the OS using the recovery disk from Dell which said it would 'delete' the contents of my hard drive. I'm not sure if the job it did is suitable. What's the best way for me to make sure my data can't be recovered? Is there anything with a GUI I can download to help with this?

Ubuntu :: Hiding Folders Inside Of Shared Folders?

Mar 27, 2010

I am setting up a lubuntu nas with all of my music, movies, etc on it. I want to give my kids access to my mp3 directory, so I can move all of the kid appropiate music into the root of my mp3 dir, in the same order I have all of my music sorted. Under the Music folder, I have them sorted, in folders, by letter. So A, B, C, D, etc... Now, in those folders are the respective artists. So where there may be something approipate in the P folder (say, Paramore), there is something inapproipate (say, Pantera)Now, when the kids go to the P folder, I don't want them to even see the Pantera folder. I just want them to see the Paramore folder. I tried a test using chmod 711 and chmod 700 on a directory with a test user, and the user can't access the directory, but can still see it

Ubuntu :: Linking Content Of Windows Folders To Folders

Mar 31, 2010

The Problem was I wanted to open my /home/Pictures folder and have it display the contents of the My Pictures folder in my windows partition. This way I could have ubuntu and xp using the same set of music files, picture files, etc. I was having a very hard time understanding how to get from here to there because I'm such a newbie. However I have discovered how to do it and I wanted to post it, in hopes it will make things easier for other newbies. This allows me to see every TYPE of document in /dev/sda8/Media (windows My Documents folder) without having to see any of the folders (My Music, My Pictures, etc).

Ubuntu :: Wipe All The Tracks Off IPod?

Jun 10, 2010

however I've managed to hash up the iPod database using gtkpod, as it seemed to come up with some error, which it quite often seems to do. It all semed normal unitl I ejected the device, as, upon ejection, it appears to not have any tracks or videos on, only games, however I can tell you that all the tracks are still there. The only other issue is my windows box is out of commision, and my laptop doesn't have enough space to hold 80g of music, and need the iPod soon for many presentations, which rules out sending it back to apple.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Wipe Off XP And Install Win 7

Nov 14, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu within xp abt 6 months before and till now im running dual boot with grub loader. I guess its Ubuntu became the primary OS but not sure. I need to figure out 2 things.

1) Which one is the primary OS. Since the grub loader is showing first, is it ubuntu? or since I have installed ubuntu alongside xp, is it XP? which one gets affected if i format/remove c: drive.
2) And second I would like to format xp and install windows 7 without losing my data, hard drives etc.

Is it possible? I want to just format my windows xp installed c: and want my ubuntu remain untouched, coz I have made many manual configurations and installed many softwares and made my ubuntu more stable than windows, so that i will continue to use ubuntu grub loader henceforth for ubuntu and windows 7.

General :: Using Mersenne Twister To Wipe Disks?

Jan 28, 2011

Currently when I want to wipe a USB disk with pseudorandom data in Linux I do the following:

dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sdb conv=notrunc

urandom is very, very slow, it gets to the point where the bottleneck is not the device. I know of another method -- the Mersenne twister. This is used in one instance by DBAN as a PRNG to securely erase data with, and it is easily 'random' enough for wiping drives -- and it is very fast. However, I'm not sure how I would use it in Linux. Is there a Mersenne twister program which I can then pipe into dd to wipe drives with?

Ubuntu :: Wish To Wipe HDD, New Install Black Screen?

Jun 5, 2011

I've a new HDD, well new everything. Have created startup disk and memory stick. With the memory stick I had 11.04 up and running as, what is it not install, but just looking. Then ran Gparted setting up ./ ./boot, ./data and /swap. went to install Ubuntu and the screen went Black with the white cursor in the upper left corner. There is no way for me to escape from the cursor. No terminal and can't run Gparted. Have checked and move the hardware connections on the mother board.

Noticed that some felt that fsck could be part of the problem along with suggestions, but as I said I've no terminal. All I can think to do is to wipe the hard drive and start once, but my question is how to do itI briefly is, on the BIOS screen "Searching NVRAM", then the black screen, I appreciate your time and I open to suggestions as to how to correct the problem. What's the best way to wipe the data before I return drive? I want to do this right because I don't want any hassles with WD about this.

Server :: Using Terminal Commands To Wipe Disks?

Dec 14, 2010

I'm attempting to do a low level wipe of a server in our office. I originally attempted to use DBAN but it wouldn't recognize the disks.

I've now moved on to attempting to use a Live Boot of Ubuntu 10.10 on a USB drive.

I'm using the following terminal command - sudo dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda bs=1M

When I did this the first time it simply wiped the USB drive that had Ubuntu on it.

What do I need to do in order to have it wipe all 4 disks on the server instead of the USB Drive?

Software :: Normal To Wipe - Each Year And Start Over?

Sep 21, 2010

I am running ubuntu on several computers. One in particular runs mythbuntu and is a mythtv server and frontend.

I do the ubuntu upgrade every 6 months so that I can gain the new features and enhancements included in mythtv.

My issue is that with each upgrade seems to come more issues. For instance, this time I upgraded to the latest and greatest and now mythtv crashes every day or two. Also, since vdpau was added to the new nvidia drivers, i am unable to get it to work.

So my question is: Is it normal for you guys to do a complete reinstall when you want to go to a new version of your linux flavor of choice.

It seems that the new ubuntu (really mythbuntu) is very stable and never crashes, but it just seems to me that once you start running a few programs, they just don't upgrade well.

General :: Installation - Wipe Hard Drive To Start Over

Aug 8, 2011

I had Ubuntu on my hard drive and tried to install Arch Linux. Things got messy and I now have an unstable, unbootable machine. I feel the installation failed because there were remains of Ubuntu. I'd like to wipe the hard drive and start over from scratch; without anything on there. How do I do this? I have several partitions made in a desperate attempt to make it all work. So I'd like to remove all partitions and any other information that's on the drive. I can not start any OS, but I can boot with the Live USB of Arch Linux...
