May 1, 2011
I have ubuntu network remix on my netbook. How do I completely wipe off ubuntu and install Windows xp on my netbook? My netbook doesn't come with a cd/dvd reader so I have to install it through a pendrive. I got my own windows xp iso ripped from my desktop, ready to go.

Background: I'm a 20+ year Mac user, switched four years ago to Linux.I have NO experience with Windows to speak of. Whenever I've gotten a new box, it's either been home-built or a Mac.Now I have a new Acer Aspire AS7551 laptop, and although I have not yet booted into Windows, it comes with a Windows 7 Home Premium license. I've been running it with Ubuntu 10.04 off a flash drive and everything works perfectly.
What I want to do: I want to wipe the disk, install Lucid, and run Windows in Virtualbox (for the sole purpose of watching some Netflix and learning a little bit about Windows 7). For the purpose of this question, please accept that I DO NOT want to dual boot. The problem: From what I can find, I can't use the "recovery discs" that came with my laptop to create a virtual machine. This is confusing, because it seems like I paid for a legitimate Windows license for use with this laptop.
Questions:
1. Would MS exchange my recovery discs for a regular install disc to go with my license code if I explained this to them?
2. If not, is there a source for Windows ISOs that I can safely use with my license? (I am aware that the legitimacy of that approach is questionable, but I am quite comfortable with the ethics since I paid for Windows 7, own the license, and only want to use it on the same computer.
3.If not,is there any way in heck I can use my recovery disc to create something Virtualbox can work with?
4. If not, how are all of you people getting your Windows virtual machines going??
(I have read that Acer is a major hassle to get a refund from for the "Windows tax" so I might as well be able to use it--this is MS' chance to win over a fan if only they will let me!)

My old-ish Dell laptop is currently running Windows 2000 and Ubuntu 9.10. I originally installed 2000 to try and squeeze a bit more performance out of the laptop for general use, but in practise Ubuntu is running great and sees far more use than the Win2K installation so I've decided to create a stripped-down (i.e. non-networked) XP installation purely to run a few favourite audio applications.
I plan to do a fresh Windows install and wipe the current C: partition. Is there anything I should be aware of in terms of the GRUB bootloader. Will it simply recognise the new XP installation? Obviously I will back up my data before I continue, but are there any other precautions to take with respect to dual-booting? I could do without having to reinstall Ubuntu too!

I have installed Ubuntu within xp abt 6 months before and till now im running dual boot with grub loader. I guess its Ubuntu became the primary OS but not sure. I need to figure out 2 things.
1) Which one is the primary OS. Since the grub loader is showing first, is it ubuntu? or since I have installed ubuntu alongside xp, is it XP? which one gets affected if i format/remove c: drive.
2) And second I would like to format xp and install windows 7 without losing my data, hard drives etc.
Is it possible? I want to just format my windows xp installed c: and want my ubuntu remain untouched, coz I have made many manual configurations and installed many softwares and made my ubuntu more stable than windows, so that i will continue to use ubuntu grub loader henceforth for ubuntu and windows 7.

I've a new HDD, well new everything. Have created startup disk and memory stick. With the memory stick I had 11.04 up and running as, what is it not install, but just looking. Then ran Gparted setting up ./ ./boot, ./data and /swap. went to install Ubuntu and the screen went Black with the white cursor in the upper left corner. There is no way for me to escape from the cursor. No terminal and can't run Gparted. Have checked and move the hardware connections on the mother board.
Noticed that some felt that fsck could be part of the problem along with suggestions, but as I said I've no terminal. All I can think to do is to wipe the hard drive and start once, but my question is how to do itI briefly is, on the BIOS screen "Searching NVRAM", then the black screen, I appreciate your time and I open to suggestions as to how to correct the problem. OpenSUSE 11.2 x86_64
Kernel 2.6.33-34.1(from Kernel:HEAD repo)
KDE 4.4.1
Did the daily set of updates today, which included the kernel, but that update only had to do with enabling IPV6 on all flavors of the kernel. The update also included updates to the xorg packages from the X11:XOrg repo. However I was prompted that a requirement couldn't be met and one of the options was to downgrade xorg-x11-driver-input to the previous revision (not previous version). I thought that wouldn't matter so I did it.
I reboot and I am able to choose the kernel I want in the grub boot screen, get to the KDM login screen, however, after that the input is totally dead! Mouse and keyboard don't work whatsoever. I have a Logitech Cordless Desktop Wave mouse (LX8) & keyboard so I tried it with a standard PS/2 wired mouse & keyboard but it produced the same exact problem.

This is a IBM T23 (10 years old)pentium3 1.1ghz640mb ram28gb hdd (contianing several bad sectors)intel graphicseverything works out of box (graphics, wireless, etc) on a live cdhowever after installation, upon boot, it displays "Error loading operating system" right after BIOS and before even goes into GRUB and is stuck there.Enter live cd, and choosing boot from harddrive does not solve the problem.Already did the CD check, which shows no problemdid a bit googlingturned out this could be an issue with a dying harddriveand sadly, it is the case, the harddrive on this 10 year old laptop is indeed dying D:However, installing windows xp posed no problem... (altho tons of driver issue, but anyways...)I have a few solutions in mind1). just use a usb stick as the replacement for harddrive2). get a new harddrive (not even sure what to get for this laptop D: )3). find a magical way to fix it :SWould definitely be glad to know a way to load this system on this existing harddrive for nowI was told earlier that there are ways to tell the system to avoid mapping the bad sectors.

I plugged in a second monitor to my new Meerkat installation and xorg stopped working.
When I took the monitor away it still wouldn't work, so I tried entering with safe graphics and that wouldn't work.
I uninstalled xorg and reinstalled and ran the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but still no luck.
I have tried reverting the vesa driver but it still won't work. The screen flashes like it's trying but just gives up.
I don't know what to do now except reinstall the partition.

The file system on my computer has become completely confused and out of sync. When I go into "documents," for example, I get the MPlayer for audio/video! I go into "home file" and get an audio player for streaming FM!Not every file is out of sync, but many are.I believe this situation started a few weeks ago when I decided to install MPlayer. I like MPlayer and especially its flexibility with regard to playing several kinds of media. I downloaded MPlayer and tried to make it my "default" player; I think that may have been the problem. Ever since then my files have been doing weird things and I'm unable to retrieve things (like documents) that I really need. Any suggestions as to how I can begin to clean up this mess

I'm selling my Dell Mini 10 that came with Ubuntu on it. I never really used it much, and the only sensitive things on it were some PHP files with MySQL passwords that I can change on the server if need be. I'm not familiar with command line at all, so I'm having trouble figuring out the best way to wipe the SSD. I already reinstalled the OS using the recovery disk from Dell which said it would 'delete' the contents of my hard drive. I'm not sure if the job it did is suitable. What's the best way for me to make sure my data can't be recovered? Is there anything with a GUI I can download to help with this?

I had it working perfectly everything worked including my headset. The only problem was certain programs were too quiet for my taste and seeing as i have a laptop and cant manually turn up the speakers i looked for a solution and found
Code: [URL] I followed those directions to try and boost the poor sound volume that has plagued me in ubuntu distros. Instead sound sparsly works. It is quieter than was, and if chrome is open at all no sound will play at all in rhythmbox or amarok(the play button dont even works it just sits at 0:00) Only after chrome closes does it play my music files again but only on this partition. As now my windows partition thats also located on this fakeraid just magically disappeared.
how to fix this as i dont even know what i did to begin with. how i can trash kde and start over from within gnome(havent tried to see if it works there yet though) EDIT: Logged back in to gnome and everything works fine. The missing partition is auto mounted like i wanted, the sound is perfectly fine. Obviously something got screwed up in the kde config but i dont know what or what to look for as i have never used kde before.

I was looking for a way to totally turn off the Hibernate option in 11.04, and not just remove the option from the menu. I have read that you can easily disable hibernate from System>Preferences>Power Management but as far as i can see I have no options in there to do such.I found this and similar pages: URL... I do not have the key named can_hibernate anywhere under my gnome-power-manager.I read that this is the option that only removes the "hibernate" option from the power menu, but actually does not disable the service, can anyone confirm this?URL...
Just curious but disabling hibernate in linux save you hardisk space like it does in windows (still quite new here)?

however I've managed to hash up the iPod database using gtkpod, as it seemed to come up with some error, which it quite often seems to do. It all semed normal unitl I ejected the device, as, upon ejection, it appears to not have any tracks or videos on, only games, however I can tell you that all the tracks are still there. The only other issue is my windows box is out of commision, and my laptop doesn't have enough space to hold 80g of music, and need the iPod soon for many presentations, which rules out sending it back to apple.

Is there a way I can fix this?

Is an ubuntu live cd totally secure from intrusion? Stated another way, even if someone knows my ip address, can the live cd environment be hacked into in any way so that another could monitor what I am doing on my computer? From my understanding the live cd is read only, so that would prevent anything malicious being installed on it. I am curious if there are other ways a box running a live cd could be tapped into.

wired is fine and fast. Wireless connects but connection goes from 100% to 53% at random, making the connection pretty pointless to use.Probably get fixed in an update. I have tried uninstalling network manager and using wicd. No luck. Well, luck, as in I could connect, but exactly the same as Network Manager. The card is a Realtek RTL8191SEvB. Machine: Toshiba Satellite Pro L510. Any takers? Would really like to get this happening as everything in Maverick is working great apart from it.

I've upgraded now from 10.04 to 10.10 to now 11.04, and I believe I have so much cruft in my system that it's become unstable.I thought I could selectively rename certain folders in my root (such as .gnome, .gnome2, etc, while logged of (i.e. from a ctrl-alt-f1 console), but that really didn't seem to work.I'd prefer not to copy to external hard drive and re-install fresh. However, I'm using KDE now for stability, as neither gnome nor unity will run well.

I upgraded to Lucid a few days ago (from Karmic) and although everything went smoothly, I've been having this problem:Every now and then, when I'm on FireFox, the whole computer freezes and is unresponsive. The mouse doesn't work, I can't open the terminal, I can't do anything! My only option is to press the restart button on my laptop.I don't know if this is of any relevance, but I use UbuntuStudio, but have been using the proper Linux Kernel. I only selected the RealTime kernel if I'm working on audio editors, which I haven't done since updating to Lucid.y laptop is an HP pavilion zv5000. It has an ATI 9000/9100 graphics card, about 768 mp of ram, and a P4 3GHz processor.
