I just want to upgrade my Slackware 13.1 kernel (2.6.33.4) to the latest stable kernel from kernel.org (2.6.38.2). I have never done anything like this and I am a Linux newbie, so I would appreciate a "Kernel Patching for Dummies" version if possible. I did do a search on this forum and most of what I read was over my head. I found an FAQ on kernelnewbies.org on "How To Apply A Patch" but when I attempted what they suggested, it said it couldn't find the file to patch at line 5 and asked me which file to patch. So I CTRL-Z'd out of there and came here. Here's what I tried:

I have a dual boot computer. The WindowsXP "side" has been infected with a rootkit virus. So far UBUNTU has not been affected to my knowledge. I have not yet removed the virus from the WindowsXP "side". I am thinking of deleting the NTFS partition and have the computer fully dedicated to UBUNTU. Now for my question. Is there a possibility that the virus resides in the MBR and that I need to "rebuild" the MBR to actually remove the virus?
Even more extreme, should I totally re-install UBUNTU in the name of safety and precaution.
is there a way to remove a patch from a kernel?
I need to apply a squashfs-lzma patch (squashfs 4.1cvs) to the liquorix kernel source which is already patched with squashfs 4.0.
how would I do that?I tried googling got this. url
but I dont know the command used to apply the patch the patch is called
35.4-3.patch.gz
url
but that patch includes more than squashfs, etc
I'm trying to install a patch but when I copy it into terminal I get message " /home/john/patch-modules_v62-opensuse.sh 'vmware-7.1.3-2.6.37-rc5.patch' not found. copy it to the current '/home/john' directory. Exiting" But I have it in my home directory!
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Western Digital Pasport 320 GB hard drive. I wanted to create a live installation on it like a USB stick. I wanted it to serve as a portable OS that I could use to boot any other computer off of, and use it for diagnostics and anti-virus scanning on Windows based computers. The additional space is for my own personal use, kind of like having a mobile desktop where I have all of my documents in one place. What I need to know is how to set up Fedora 11 so that the hard drive will boot on most PCs regardless of their architecture. I also need to know what's a good Anti-virus to install onto it for the sake of fixing Windows hard drives.
Please keep in mind I'm a noob when it comes down to a lot of things, so if there's an antivirus I have to install manually, please included a step by step.
I have been trying to update the gui version 4.10 and the antivirus engine 0.95.1 but to no avail.

I would like to install Windows as 2. O, but when I insert the original WindowsXP SP1, it loads up the files on the disc, and after that, a blue screen shows up, telling me, i have to remove viruses and the setup breaks down. I also tried it with Windows XP Pro, but the same problem.
Here is a Pic showing the exact Problem, except the upper part: PAGE-FAULT .... isnt there:
I installed F14 on a friend's computer a couple of weeks ago. Today she called me saying that her ISP called her telling her they'd have to cancel her internet if she didn't fix whatever virus was sending port scans to edu domains that they'd gotten complaints from. I thought "well, there's a first"... I've got ssh to her computer, so i shelled in and ran a couple of commands, but i really know very little about how to investigate this kind of stuff.
She's directly connected to her cable modem via cat-5; but she does have a wireless card installed --she just doesn't use it, nor a router, afaik, nor as far as i'd seen when i setup her printer. I googled a bit, and ran a couple of commands, and 1 of them was interesting because it APPEARS that her wireless card is ON and the eth0 is OFF? Perhaps someone will know how to read this output better than i, and the output of the other command that i ran. Also, does anyone know any other ways to properly investigate this one? FWIW, she does use transmission to download torrents.
Anyway, here's the commands i ran:
Code:
[root@localhost ~]# ip link show
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00.
2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UNKNOWN qlen 1000 link/ether 00:21:97:9b:70:29 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
3: wlan0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN qlen 1000 link/ether 00:1e:e5:9c:b6:8a brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff [root@localhost ~]#
I'm having problems to install SCST in Fedora 11.I'm not able to apply the kernel patch because there isn't a file called drivers/scsi/scsi_lib.c in the /usr/src/kernels/2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i868.PAE.Does anybody have an idea on how to proceed?
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust wondering if this is possible and if so, how? I want to be able to apply the following patch: [URL]
It is apparently a test fix for the touchpad on the newer Dell laptops. I want to test drive it a bit. Otherwise, if someone could point me in the right direction as to custom compile a Fedora 13 x64 disc including this patch, that would be great.

I have zero internet access on my laptop via wired or wireless connection, and need to apply this patch, but have pretty much no idea where to start.Running vanilla FC13 x86_64. Whats the easiest way to go about this, considering its hard work for me to download packages and their dependencies at college (where I am posting from now) and installing them at home, it could take days.
How can i download free pen drive virus scanner? I need good one? Most of computer gets attacked by viruses through flash drives or usb drives or pendrives. If we can scan and delete it before using it we can make our computer safe.

Our Email server is hosted on the Internet. Because of virus/spam generate problem, emails are worst affected & the users have a lot of problem on Email, as the outlook gives error. It happens when a PC generates Spam & our IP gets blocked by the ISP for some time. Thats why I want to setup an Anti VIRUS/SPAM Firewall on my LAN (before the Squid), so these spams do not go past the Internet Gateway.Hope u guys understand my problem & suggest some useful links, software & documentations.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI went ahead and installed msttcorefonts because I need them for college work. However, when I have them installed, a few sites here and there like Facebook will use the font, but it'll be fuzzy, which is the complete opposite of what the free fonts did for me. I've thought about whether it would be possible to block those fonts in Firefox or only make them available in Libreoffice (the only place where I even need them), but there doesn't seem to be a way to do so.
View 3 Replies View Relatedthere is an issue with the way the Linux Kernel addresses memory by default and the graphic drivers for my Asus G1Sn. I have a patch that I had compiled against a custom kernel for 2.6.27.xx how ever it does not work with the latest kernel in Fedora 11. It is beyond me to rewrite the patch to work with a different kernel.
