Fedora :: How To Restore Terminal In F14
May 29, 2011
If I want to know the installed kernels I write in terminal rpm -q kernel, but the result is:
[Majara@Aitaenxp ~]$ rpm -q kernel
el paquete kernel no est - instalado (kernel package is not installed)
If I write
[Majara@Aitaenxp ~]$ rpm -qa kernel
[Majara@Aitaenxp ~]$
there is no result
I can see the kernels so:
[Majara@Aitaenxp ~]$ rpm -qa | grep -i kernel
abrt-addon-kerneloops-1.1.18-1.fc14.i686
kernel-PAE-2.6.35.12-88.fc14.i686
kernel-PAE-2.6.35.12-90.fc14.i686
Is the terminal spoiled? How can I restore it?

I have a laptop fujitsu siemens amilo pi 1505 for about a year there was ubuntu 8.10 installed on it and everything worked fine. 3 days ago i upgraded it to 9.10 and there where the problems began. Sound crashed OS couldn't find sound card. I've removed alsa, pulse audio completly and sound came back. After about 5-15 min's icons dissappeared from the desktop and i had to restart. From then every time i start after booting i see that:
[URL]
and if i change kernel:
[URL]
though anything i do there in this window makes no difference whatsoever. So then can I somehow restore graphic settings from the terminal? Or repair/restore basic settings of ubuntu without loosing data?

I just installed the only Nvidia driver available in the software center for Ubuntu. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. I don't know which Nvidia driver I installed, but the screen resolution the Nvidia driver tried to set fails at login, so now I'm stuck booting my computer into the terminal. . I used sudo apt-get install xerver-xorg in attempt to restore the screen; however, the xerver-xorg package cannot be found. How do I restore xerver without reinstalling Ubuntu? How do I restore my original driver?

So i'm VERY new at this, i need fedora for this research i'm starting. I have a dell and vista was installed on it, then i installed fedora 10 like it said on the fedora site from a boot disc. Now i have fedora but i don't have vista nor access to the memory it took up. I tried to restore to start over but i can't, and i need vista back.
Normally i would restore from the 10 G partition dell sets up for recovery but i'm not able to get to it, and i don't have my vista discs they're back at school.
What do i do?

how to restore the original yum settings?
I followed a walkthrough that set the yum config to be more robust(?) or harder to break F11 and since have had major problems installing things.
Can I roll this back or reinstall the yum parts of the OS from scratch to regain normal operation?

2 days ago I upgraded my f12 system to get the latest updates including the latest kernel (as of Xmas day). When I rebooted it appeared that my graphics drivers didn't work and I was restricted to an 800 by 600 res, but otherwise my system worked okI followed the tutorial in the signature of leigh who often posts on here for installing nvidia drivers, but now when I boot up I just get a black screenduring boot up I get that blue screen with the White fedora logo in the middle, but after that instead of going to the login page; I just get a black screen. The HD containing my main F14 install is suddenly failing with many unreadable blocks. So I booted a different F14 installation I have on another disk.
Then I run dump, for example, as following:
Code:
dump -0 -a -q -v -A sdb1_home.arc -f sdb1_home.dmp -L F14_sdb1_home /dev/sdb1
as, for what I can recall, I've often done to create full backups.
The problem is that running restore with this command:
Code:
restore -i -A sdb1_home.arc -f sdb1_home.dmp
(as, for whatI can...) and using the add and extract commands, only the directory are created. But files are listed using ls. If I add just a file, only dirname is extracted.

I have a Laptop where I installed both Fedora 11 and windows 7 dual boot.
While I was upgrading Fedora 11 to Fedora 14 using preupgrade, I tried to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst file to make an option to continue upgrading the system after rebooting.
Accidentally, I deleted the file content and I couldn't restore it
I knew then that I'll face a problem when I reboot the system, and I faced it >> the grub selection menu disappeared , and only the line (grub> ) appeared when I reboot the system.
1- These commands:
Code:
But when I rebooted , nothing changed and the same (grub> ) appeared again.
2- I used the instructions in the PDF attached, but unfortunately nothing changed.
I think that I have to rewrite the menu.lst and grub.cnf files but I'm not expert and I don't know exactly what was there (locations , commands , etc. )
The current system monitor for the file system is shown in the next image:

Is there a relatively easy way to restore the "previous" version of an RPM in FC10? The last set of updates killed my GUI and I'd very much like to get back to whatever I had before I got updated to:
xorg-x11-server-common-1.5.3-13.fc10.i386
xorg-x11-drv-evdev-2,1.3-1.fc10.i386

Running F10. What I want is, dhcp assigns an IP, like 192.168.1.123 (this works) and somehow the computer's hostname becomes pc123. This is what I want, but the hostname is stubbornly static. Not really understanding the process or the hundreds of posts I've searched through, I have done:
Remove the static name from /etc/hosts
Make sure /etc/host.conf says "order bind hosts"
Set /etc/sysconfig/network line to HOSTNAME=localhost.localdomain
Made sure all the settings in the network administration tool are normal
Nonetheless hostname invariably reports "localhost.localdomain". It also bothers me that the network connection seems not to be established until AFTER the desktop comes up. Isn't this too late?
We absolutely have to set up a system and then reproduce it, essentially bit for bit, on other computers which are on the same network. The "master" F10 install was automatically given a hostname of pc111 and it somehow hardwired that into its files. Trying to "unwire" it has gotten me nowhere.- something seems to have changed and I don't know what. It works fine on FC6.

So I just completed a clean install of Fedora 11 from the live CD. The only thing I've done to it thus far was to run the update manager once. Next item on the agenda was to configure my display to correctly handle my two monitors, but if I open up the controls and select 'Display' both my monitors instantly go blank. The only way to restore them is to use ctr-alt-backspace to logout. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon x800L, and right now I'm using the default ati driver that came with the system.

I have accidentally removed my /boot partition(when installing grub using LiveCD i'm typing "rm -rf /boot" instead of "rm -rf boot") After that i have installed grub, have to reinstalled latest kernel(2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686) using rpm(and 2nd time using yum) but result the same: i can't boot into my system. Unfortunately, i can't copy&paste log, but booting stopped after something like a:
mounting /proc
mounting /sysfs
Creating /dev
then kernel finds keyboard and mouse and... and nothing. Is it possible to restore my system without reinstalling distro?

I reinstalled Fedora over the top of an existing installation which was having problems. My user directory (HomeOriginal-User) was saved and I'd like to restore it if possible, but as a second user as this new installation now has a different new user (HomeNew-User). I attempted to create a new user with the same name as the Original-User but when I logged in, there were error popups.

I tried to install KDevelop4, decided I didn't want to use it, and now I am having trouble getting KDevelop3 working again. The only steps to installing kdevelop4 were installing a new version of kdevplatform and then kdevelop itself. I did this:
1) sudo yum remove "kdevplatform* kdevelop*"
2) disable updates and testing repo
3) sudo yum install "kdevelop"
The problem is that there is something wrong with the menus (File, Edit, etc). There are many important items missing, as well as one of them says "No text!". This indicates that this is not the original packaged version with F11 because I used it for a year and it was certainly not like this. Is there a better way to get back to the original version than I showed here?

I'm having trouble with my sound on my new Fedora 12 machine. when I first installed F12 sound was working but it appears that I have messed up some settings somewhere and now alsa is no longer recognizing my sound card (integrated into my ASUS M4A79XTD EVO motherboard)
Code:
$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found...
I'm sure that when I tried to fix it I probably messed it up worse. Is there an easy way to restore all of my sound settings and audio Drivers back to the F12 defaults without losing everything else?
