Fedora Networking :: How To Restore Normal DNS Hostnaming
Apr 24, 2009
Running F10. What I want is, dhcp assigns an IP, like 192.168.1.123 (this works) and somehow the computer's hostname becomes pc123. This is what I want, but the hostname is stubbornly static. Not really understanding the process or the hundreds of posts I've searched through, I have done:
Remove the static name from /etc/hosts
Make sure /etc/host.conf says "order bind hosts"
Set /etc/sysconfig/network line to HOSTNAME=localhost.localdomain
Made sure all the settings in the network administration tool are normal
Nonetheless hostname invariably reports "localhost.localdomain". It also bothers me that the network connection seems not to be established until AFTER the desktop comes up. Isn't this too late?
We absolutely have to set up a system and then reproduce it, essentially bit for bit, on other computers which are on the same network. The "master" F10 install was automatically given a hostname of pc111 and it somehow hardwired that into its files. Trying to "unwire" it has gotten me nowhere.- something seems to have changed and I don't know what. It works fine on FC6.
Edit: I have a Sony Vaio FJ170 laptop with Phoenix BIOS version R0060X6 & a broken DVD Drive. The BIOS doesn't support booting from USB (it does have 'External Drive Boot' option, but my USB stick doesn't get listed under boot devices in BIOS when connected to the laptop).
A few days ago I upgraded to Windows7, then installed Lucid through WUBI. With the help of another thread of mine (here), I changed the default boot option & timeout of Windows to zero to directly boot into Ubuntu. So far it was good. But recently I tried to get back to Windows for some reason but could not succeed as the F8 key no longer brings up the Window's Advance Boot Menu.
Is there another way to restore the dual boot menu timeout to get back to the Windows installation. Or even better, is there some way to make a fresh install of Windows & Ubuntu side-by-side without DVD drive. I am only 14 and absolutely new to Linux. The network booting methods given on the Internet were too complex for me to understand. I like Ubuntu but also need Windows for programming C++ & Photoshop CS4.
I have Debian 6 (squeeze), I have also seen this under Ubuntu (can not remember how I fixed it).
I can hibernate, but when I switch on the system cold boots (it does not restore previous session).
Note suspend works fine. Have looked in /var/log/pm-suspend.log Shows for each suspend suspend block a resume suspend block, but hibernate hibernate' is not followed by resume hibernate` ( I assume that this is not correct. )
Update on what I have discovered: I have discovered that the uswsusp package is missing from debian squeeze. I could get it from testing or unstable repository, but have to be careful about not pulling in other dependencies. I would like to know if it will fix it. Is uswsusp needed for hibernate. Or should pm-utils be enough. (suspend it ram is working fine.)
I'm having problems with my wireless. It connects without any problem, but it is very slow. Actually I have the impression that the connection velocity is varies from normal to very slow, however the average connection velocity is very slow. I have been looking up the forums for more the one month with any success. I have tried to install the compac-wireless drivers and the kmod-wl with many different network setups. For sure it is not a problem with my home network, since it works fine with my other old notebook running fedora 11 or when I boot in the windows.
My system configuration is: - sony vaio VPCCW23FX - card: Atheros AR9285 - driver: ath9k - operating system: fedora 12 - kernel 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.x86_64
I have accidently removed the nm-applet icon fron the panel .How can I restore the icon back on the upper panel? The nm-applet is running but without the icon appearing on the panel. In the startup application --> I edited it back to /usr/bin/nm-applet but it won't appear on the panel
I am about to repave an FC14 box with FC15. To save a bit of mucking about, I would be keen to restore, from backup, the file(s) needed to reactivate my WiFi connection under FC15. I can always rebuild from scratch, but recovering from backup would prevent finger fumbles from making the task harder, as I have a long-winded 128-bit key.
I lost my network manager applet after removing kde-desktop. restore it, as I dont find it in add to panel applications I dont have any clue, also how could I add bluetooth applet in notification area.
I have a config script for a particular software package that does... iptables-restore < /etc/sysconfig/iptables > /tmp/firewall.log 2>&1 The problem is, the output hangs after this. If the user hits a return, the rest of the output comes to the screen and the script finishes normally. But the script looks like its hung because of this odd iptables-restore behavior.
I have a router/modem linux box, connection to DSL through PPP.I also use an OpenVPN service, to which this box connects. My problem is that the speed cap of the VPN is just half that of the DSL connection. I don't need it for internet browsing. Is there a way I can route all the http traffic coming from the client computers (or all of the traffic will do too) through the normal connection? As of now I can only route all traffic either on VPN or normal PPP
I'm using OpenWRT on a WRT54GS. I'm using wifidog in combination with openvpn. For those of you familiar with wifidog, my auth server is located at the other end of an openvpn tunnel and the "wifi dog gateway" is running on the WRT itself. I'm don't really think that wifi dog is the issue. Basically, I'm using openvpn with the "redirect-gateway" option which works well. In this mode, openvpn removes my current default gateway setting and adds the remote openvpn server as the default gateway (as it should). However, overnight, my default gateway on the local network keeps reapperaing (along with the openvpn one as well).
This causes confusion and I don't want any packets (But ovbiously the connection to the actual openvpn server) to go down this local gateway. Why do you think it reappears? Do you reckon openvpn is dropping connection and somehow the normal gateway is being added back? I *could* run a cron script which runs every minute or so with something like "route del default gw xx.xx.xx.xx" (where xx.xx.xx.xx is the default gateway which I don't want to be there) but that is quite messy and means that if I were to ever move the router I would need to reconfigure this and considering that I would like in the future to have many of these wifi dog gateways, this really isn't an ideal option (as every network will have a different default gateway).
are there any sweeper / cleaner apps which can take back my installation as to when it was new. I know home directory could have config files etc..but that doesnt matter, i want all packages and applications reset to how it was when i had a clean install. I am using Natty
I was able to download the Fedora 12 Beta on a i386(32-bit) DVD iso and the install went well and clean.
I`m new to Fedora (but not to Linux generally) and maybe I made some kind of mistake. I`m not quite sure what logical volumes are and I was a little bit scared to use them. I tried to disable logical volumes and put Fedora on my "classical" volumes (partitions) but they looked quite different from what I expected.
Is there any way to use 'fdisk -l' as a normal user? I see in F12, /sbin has been added to PATH by default for a normal user, but when trying to use it, nothing shows up.
See below for demonstration purposes:
Code:
Password:
I don't want to use 'su -' or 'su -c' and login every time.
I've been using Fedora 12 for quite sometime but still i haven't figured out a way to revert my desktop icons back to normal. During my few days of starting fedora, i accidentally press on something while exploring Fedora 12 suddenly my icons and desktop changed like this:
Revert my desktop, i am really having a hard time dealing with my files and shortcuts.
what could this bei saved my correct iptables file @ Code: /etc/iptables.up.ruleswhere webmin is looking for it.webmin config is to automaticly boot this file and addes a line at.
How do I get the normal GDM logon dialog that was in F8 - the one with the User field displayed directly, and the drop down menus at the top?
F10 was successful. I changed the pam configuration to allow root logon at the GUI screen.
But this screen is different. All I get is 3 choices in a list: FTP Logon to Web Site, Ghost for Linux, and "Other". I only get the User field if I choose Other, and at that point I also get Sus[pend, Restart, and Shutdown buttons.
how i am auto mount the ntfs drives through the normal user with out asking password... I need it and also one thing is i want two drives only auto mount and when i open the other drives it should ask the password?...
Everything was working great with my FC12 box. I think the Fedora Gods must be punishing me as I had recently downloaded an image for another distro, but was only trying to install it to usb and play with it on another computer!
Then I tried to boot and I got an error message:
Code:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type mount: you must specify the filesystem type mount: you must specify the filesystem type
[code]....
Can't mount root filesystem
Boot has failed, sleeping forever. I obviously don't understand the boot process well enough to fix this problem, so I'll describe what happens in more detail. (Feel free to correct my terminology so I can communicate in a more concise manner next time!)
1) Bootloader comes up fine and I'm able to select my kernel. (This problem affects all kernels)
2) Then as usual a whole bunch of text goes flying across the screen identifying hardware.
3) During this hardware identification, at the point where all my disks are being identified sd 1, sd 2, sd 6... I get the error shortly/immediately after this.
I cant tell for certain if its immediate because so many mount messages are spewed and I am not sure how to 1) pause the screen or 2) scroll the screen or 3) output this information to a file. But it does sit long enough on the disk identification which is right before the mount errors. I was able to look at a previous dmesg and noticed that dracut comes right after the disk identification, so I think the mount errors are being generated in dracut. (Now whether dracut is the problem or not is another issue) I am able to boot using a rescue usb and mount my LVM manually and then browse the root filesystem, so at least my data seems to be safe!
I'm setting up Ubuntu Karmic on my sister's old computer for my nephew, he's quite young so my sister asked to install some content filtering. I'll first setup an OpenDNS account and I've installed and managed to get dansguardian and squid working on a virtual machine to try it out. so far it's working pretty well, but I need to secure it form the inside out.
I was thinking of blocking specific outbound ports so he could not bypass the proxy. because by default the firefox configuration can be easily changed. so I have a couple of questions.
1. is it possible to block outgoing ports on Ubuntu? 2. is that the best method? 3. is there anything else I should be aware of to prevent subversion?
lastly, this question is probably unrelated to this board but I've set up a cron job to update a dynamic ip with OpenDNS, the problem is that the password is in clear text in the user's crontab, can I play with permissions? is it possible to run the job under a root account and deny read/write access to a normal user?
i'm just installed VirtualBox following this guide:[URL]...then i created a WinXP VM. installed GuestAdditions and everything seems to be fine, display was fine 32bit 800x600. Anyhow after rebooting, the VM only display 8bit and 640x480 for XP... this is really weird. anyone come across this before? i can't seem to figure out a fix to get my display back to normal
If sound on F12 works as root user but not as a normal user, try this simple fix! I've been struggling to get sound working as a normal (non-root) user since F10. Until now I've had to run X as root user to get any sound out of my machine.
Sound actually works OK now for me as a normal user. Here's how I fixed the problem.
First I uninstalled pulseaudio with:# yum remove pulseaudio Then reboot back to the hardware. You might want to keep pulseaudio, but I have no need for it. PA wasn't running on my system anyway.
Running X as root user, I did the following: As a test I opened a root shell and typed the following:
[root]# alsamixer c0 That started the alsamixer OK, and all the controls were accessible.
Problem is that I can't burn disk using nero linux as normal user. If I try to do so, it tries to create a .nrg image in the drive rather than burning those files in the disk. But if i run nero as super user then it works okay. If I run it as normal itan't even recognize my burner
How do i add the default normal user to the sudoers group? Is it normal for the main user to be kept out of the sudoers group or did i do something wrong during install?
Is it possible to install Rawhide packages in F14 for normal users ? I see that Rawhide have F15 (as in Fedora 15) so it doesn't install. How can you bypass this? And what repo to use if you want to install rawhide?
I want to make one Fedora 14 as server that have Date and Time as normal. Is there any to make other fedora 14 get Date and time from that Fedora 14 server
I recently installed FC13 on my Acer 2920 laptop. During normal routine work, the system shutdown unexpectedly without giving any message. This problem continues every time I boot fecdora.
