You can try to start the mysqld daemon with:
shell> /home/mosty/mysql/bin/mysqld --skip-grant &
and use the command line tool /home/mosty/mysql/bin/mysql to connect to the mysql database and look at the grant tables:

I currently run CentOS 5.4 and I want to create an image of my current hard drive so that I can play it in a VM Player (VirtualBox).
What utility can I use to create a disk image? Also, Since i'm only using 20gb. I think I want to make a "sparse" file so that the image only takes up about 20gb.
Now... if there is an easier way to do this... let me know. I tried a few tutorials online with no progress. I spent all day yesterday trying to figure this out. Literally, all day.

Dec 10, 2009Headphone plugged in the front and the mixer master channel is set to "headphone". System Settings -> Multimedia is set untouched. And the installation configured (in order):
- HDA Intel (VT1708B Analog)
- PulsAudio Sound Server
- Default
Opening System Settings -> Notifications and playing a sound works fine.
Opening System Settings -> Multimedia and hitting the test button: no sound.
Junk: no sound
Amarok: no sound
Why is it that the notifications work (without pulse) but anything else fails? How can I get it to work?
Fedora Installation :: 12 Test Drive Running Live From CD?
Mar 4, 2010The disk I obtained from a seller runs fine in live mode (no installation) on my Windows XP. I liked what I saw. However, when trying to run cd live on my Linux PC it won't run. Linux pc currently has Kubundu 9.1 installed. Previous to that I had Mint 8 installed, but again Fedora 12 cd would not run. After getting an initial Fedora startup screen, I next receive a bunch of text, ending with a text screen of about 30 lines with "OK" in green to right of each line. At bottom is blinking cursor. That ends my machine's live running of cd.
Obviously, if I can not get cd to run live on linux pc, I'm not going to be able to install. (I should add that ubuntu, kubuntu, mint 8 and pclinuxos all ran successfully live on machine and three of them were installed successfully.) Perhaps, Fedora is at war with Ubuntu et al.

May 3, 2010about 6 months ago i reformatted my computer, and after it was all said and done i lost my audio in the process, well i tried countless times to fix it and every time i go to install realtek AC 97 it pops up during installation saying "the software you are installing has not passed the windows logo testing to verify its compatibility with the windows XP" i have read many forums and i see this is a frequent problem to some folks.

May 21, 2010I am driving Fedora 12 and need to test an application GUI with Python 2.4, 2.5 and 2.6. Python2.6 is native in F12 at /usr/lib... and I have alt-installed 2.4 and 2.5 at /usr/local/lib... Site-packages directories for 2.4 and 2.5 are empty. I have tried different tricks to install gtk-2.0 and pygtk in the site-packages of 2.4 and 2.5. But could not find a working solution.
My latest trial was to download Fedora 7 live and copy from its python2.5 gtk-2.0 and pygtk.* to F12:/usr/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages. Results were as follows:

Nov 17, 2010I'm trying to upgrade, but have this issue: usually I download the DVD iso, run checksum, burn it, test the disk, and when found ok, I run the upgrade. Now, however, I keep getting "disk not ok" at 95% of the disk test. I have downloaded and verified the iso twice, used 2 DVD's, 2 different DVD-drives, 2 different computers and keep getting this error at 95%.

May 24, 2011I've recently installed F15 LXDE RC from the livecd and connected my USB Brother All-In-One MFC-5440cn printer. After following the Brother installation page, the Cups & LPR drivers are installed but when I'm in the cups page (http://localhost:631/admin), the printer will not print a test page or print from any application. The LCD panel on the printer does show 'receiving data' but nothing comes out. The last version of Fedora I had running was F13 and the same printer worked fine.
Are there any other printer drivers I need to install besides the Brothers? The printer does show up in the Print Manager but nothing prints. I did have this same type of issue with Mageia Beta 1 and ended up installing a2ps, which wasn't included in the original print drivers, and it is now printing. So I had to install a2ps with F15 but still no print output. Something must have changed with the recent distros causing this. After looking at the output of dmesg I see this:

Any idea why it's failing to connect to Cups or any idea how to find out? Is it possible to have too many USB devices connected? I'm using a 4 port usb hub in use and also using a usb mouse/keyboard connected.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. Apache/2.0.54 (Fedora) Server at wiki.domain.com Port 80. What am I missing here? Seems like my ErrorDocument is not being reached..
Fedora Hardware :: Memory Test Passes But It Breaks Before Finishing?
Jun 24, 2011I've got this really weird problem and I'm not even sure if it is a problem. I recently upgraded the RAM on my Compaq Presario Laptop from 3GB to 4GB by swapping out a 1GB DDR to a 2GB DDR so now it contains two 2GB DDRs. The BIOS shows 4096 MB of memory, Fedora shows 3955MB (Probably after the reduction for the video memory) so that's fine.
But I noticed a very quick flash during boot in between the Compaq Screen and GRUB. It only started coming after the RAM upgrade. I'm not able to make out what exactly is written. It's too fast. Will try with a proper camera at home. In any case, I could make out some large number probably in the order of gigabytes written in bytes. Again, not sure of the exact value.
So I get a little curious about this message and decide to run a memory test. It's working perfectly. Around 74%, it stops and says Memory Test Passed and moves on to check the HDD. I try the same from the BIOS. In the BIOS, it's a progress bar and no percentage value mentioned. Though the BIOS says 4096MB of memory, the progress bar also stops at roughly 75% and says passed. I'm not even sure what to search for on Google though I tried and got no similar results.
why this is happening? Since it's stopping at 75%, I have a feeling that the change in the amount of RAM hasn't been made in some place by the system.
Fedora Networking :: 10 Wired Con. Sharing / Cant Enable Eth1 To Test Settings?
May 24, 2009I have Fedora 10 with 2 nic's and have used the firewall tool, network manager, etc.,then disabled the firewall front end and wrote my own iptables rules but can not even enable eth1 to use it. Tried 2 different common cards (like a network everywhere 10/100) Service network restart says eth1 not there.
Right now Ive:
eth0 connects direct to internet via my cable ISP.eth1 I've set as 192.168.1.1, netmask 255.255.255.0, gateway I wasn't sure but I set as my IP on eth0 isp supplied. DNS wasn't sure, just left blank.
But I can't even enable eth1 to test those settings.
then with gui firewall crap disabled I wrote my own iptables ruleset: (kernel flagged for ip forwarding)
with all chain policies set to allow.

(p.s. gnome, but all the tools are confusing the crap outta me, They seem to work against each other. I'm used to just bash.)
Fedora :: Printing From A Samba Printer Error Test Page Failed To Print
Jul 20, 2009I have a FC11 box, with an HP prineter attached. I trying to print from my laptops after I have setup samba and shared the printer , It was working fine when I was installing FC4 and FC5. I am not sure what is missing. when I tried to print from the XP box I got "Test pge failed to print" error.
