Fedora Hardware :: What Is "Targeted Content Distribution" On A Motherboard

Jan 17, 2010

When I run the "dmidecode" command on a FC 12 system with a relatively new motherboard, I notice that its report about the motherboard hardware says "Targeted content distribution is supported".

What is "Targeted content distribution" ?

Installation runs fine until the point, when it tries to install selinux-policy-targeted-2.4.6-279.el5.noarch, the whole virtual pc hangs at this.any ideas? i tried to google few things about this, but i have found nothing. this has happened 3 times in row, whole virtual pc always hangs at the same package. i dont have any other problems with vmware, gentoo runs and installs fine in it.i would prefer to do installation using netinstall.iso, it would take a lot of time to download all cds or whole dvd and all i require is a very basic set of packages.

Fedora :: Moving From 32-bit To 64-bit With A New Motherboard

Mar 17, 2011

I am currently running Fedora 14 on a 32-bit AMD XP motherboard. My plan is to replace the motherboard w/an AMD 64-bit (multicore, prob'ly) version (most likely w/a different h/w architecture) and I'd like to make sure my current applications and configuration (if that makes any sense) are moved en masse to the 64-bit version.

Is there an easy way to do this? What are my "gotchas"?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Can't Boot In After Motherboard Change / What To Do?

Apr 3, 2010

I've recently changed the motherboard of a redhat server that's been running fine otherwise. The new motherboard is different to the old one. I can't boot in now; getting "Kernal panic: VFS : Unable to mount root fs on 00:00" messages. I've run mkinitrd to rebuild the image file and have changed the grub.conf line to point to the new image file but it still occurs.

title Red Hat Linux (2.4.25)
root (hd0,0)
kernal /vmlinuz-2.4.18-14 ro root=LABEL=/
initrd /initrd.img.2.4.18-14

However; during the bootup I spy some "unknown IDE device" errors along with some "IRQ resource cannot be reserved" and/or "Could not enable IDE device" or similar messages. As per attached image.

I can detect the harddisk when I bootup using rescuecd and that's how i rebuilt the image file. I have tried changing the "ro root=" to "ro root=/dev/hda3" or other hdax figures; but still the same.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Remove X From System Distribution?

Jun 8, 2011

How to remove X completely from the system?

As a Security practice I wanted to disable X from loading.
So i modified following line from /etc/inittab.
id:3:initdefault:
I was then able to start my machine in terminal mode(runlevel 3).

I wasn't satisfied at this stage as i was able to get the graphical console by merely typing code...

Now i have made the above line commented and removed execute bit of the file .
System is now behaving as i wish it would.

I have 2 questions here.

1)Is this Method considered to be stardard while removing X in linux distro.
Will it make any difference?
I m not using any application that explicitly use graphical user interface and i can work in runlevel 3.

2)Is any package responsible for loading X .If yes then removing shall remove X from the system, correct me if i m wrong.code...

Red Hat / Fedora :: Download Of DVD Distribution Error - Keeps Failing Near The End

Jul 22, 2010

I'm attempting to download the DVD Install ISO for Scientific Linux (Red Hat with some additions for science) to my PC-Laptop external USB Hard Disk, but the download keeps failing near the end.

My PC-Laptop is running Vista 32bit, and the external HD is a 500GB wallet sized Buffalo HD with 400 GB free. I'm no PC sys admin - but the Scientific Linux file is over 4GB in size and I wonder if this might be a problem if the HD is formatted as a FAT32 rather than an NTFS disk (if that's the correct terminology)?

The Windows Vista download window says that I've run out of space on the HD, even though I haven't.

Note that I can't think I can download this as multiple CD's rather than a single DVD distribution - because I'm trying to install this Scientific Linux in Oracle(former Sun) Virtual Box and I'm having difficulties understanding what it wants and was advised by someone to download Scientific Linux as a single iso to burn to a DVD (in the hope that Virtual box will see it for installation in the DVD drive) - but as said I'm unable to even download the DVD installation file.

Fedora Installation :: System Hangs On M3A78-T Motherboard?

Mar 1, 2009

I got an Asus M3A78-T motherboard last year, along with a Phenom 9650 CPU and 2GB of RAM. I originally tried to install Sabayon, but it would occasionally hang while running. I decided to give Fedora another try (wasn't happy with FC4 a few years back) at the constant chiding of my friend.

My first try was with the x86_64 Fedora 10 ISO, using an IDE hard drive and CDROM. It would hang a little bit into something like 'copying system files, at the same place every time. Thinking it was a bad burn, bad iso, or something (checksum and image verification passed) I went ahead and got the DVD ISO. The DVD would always hang a little bit into "Formatting file system." At this point, I have tried EVERY other combination of hardware - swapped out ram, CPU, PS, bought SATA hard drive and DVDROm drive, unplugged the mouse, and even the case pigtails for USB and Firewire. It always hangs in the same place. Somewhere along the process, I took the motherboard back and exchanged it for a new one. Still fails, and in exactly the same place.

The system hang is a hard lockup. Mouse freezes, no keyboard activity (even LED status changes.) The drive activity LED will go out and the progress bar stops advancing.

I'm surprised I'm not seeing anyone else with this problem - I thought this board was a bit more prevalent, but I'm guessing not! What's my next step? I would create a bug report, but I don't know what subsystem is causing the hang. I suspect SATA drivers, but I'm not sure how to test that.

And one other clue - I get a scrambled video screen before it comes up to the first X install screen:

It only lasts for 5 seconds or so, then comes up okay.

Fedora :: UUID Format Of Drives Changed With New Motherboard?

Mar 11, 2010

I am trying to recover some data on some drives that are in the same LVM. When I upgraded the motherboard, I had complications getting the drives to all load under the LVM, and in the process I made the mistake of formatting one of the drives. The problem now is that the UUID changed on the drive so when I try to mount the LVM it can't find device with a certain UUID. When I try to set the UUID back to the old one it says 'Invalid UUID format'.

I can set it to a UUID generated through 'uuidgen', si I then noticed that the format of that UUID is different than the old one which I'm trying to set it to. Why is that? Is there a way I can get it to change to the old one in the different format?
The old format: yQtrVB-5jCk-vF10-05c2-AcDL-GNn1-ivdxxh
The new format: d5224587-a6cd-4a66-a12b-d7b75eec5871

Fedora :: Reading A Data From CD / Dvd Is Very Slow After Change Motherboard

Mar 28, 2010

Recently changed my motherboard. The new board has the 790FX/SB750 chipset, and the old board used the 770/SB600 chipset. Prior to the change, I had never had any problems reading/writing CDs or DVDs. I now find that reading a data CD is very slow, it can take up to 30 secs before the icon appears on the desktop and a filer window appears. In my tests thus far, only data CDs written on Linux can always be read, albeit slowly. Data CDs written on Windows are variable. Some are never seen by the system, others may or may not be opened. That is I might be able to read it during one test, and next time I try I can't.

When a CD is not 'seen', there is an initial flurry of activity by the drive, but the drive icon (in "Computer' window) doesn't think a disc is in the drive. I can boot OK off a DVD, and data DVDs wrtten on Linux are opened and read quite fast. I am running Fedora 12 x86_64 with the latest Fedora kernel package (2.6.32.9-70), and the Motherboard bios is the latest available. The CD/DVD drive is a SATA Pioneer DVR-215. I have checked the bios settings, and have tried setting 'storage configuration' to IDE and to AHCI, each giving the same result.

I tried switching the SATA data cable from SATA-3 to SATA-2 and was able to open and read a Windows data CD that had previously not been seen, but subsequent attempts have failed to open and read that CD. I suspect the problem may have something to do with hardware drivers, but I really am guessing about this and have not been able to find any useful information on this.

Fedora Hardware :: Chance The Motherboard Could Damage The New Video Card?

Jun 20, 2010

System:

Fedora 12
Motherboard: ASUS A8V-XE (Socket 939)
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Memory: DDR 400 184 pin (PSD1G400KM)--two sticks, 1 GB each

Much to my consternation, my video card blew a few capacitors. A local computer shop said that they tried a working PCI Express card, and the video was still not working, so they concluded the PCI Express slot was damaged as well. However, they also tried an older model video card that uses the PCI slots, and everything worked. So I ordered a new video PCI video card. It's on its way (Amazon). However, in the meantime I had a 1997-vintage video card sitting around, so when I got the computer back, I tried it. No signal to the monitor, not even motherboard booting beeps. Nothing. I called the shop back. He said even though my old card fit the PCI slot, new changes might have made it incompatible (16 vs. 32 bit, etc.). Anyway, even when I take the card out and boot, no beeps. That makes me wonder whether the old card did something, and now the motherboard is damaged beyond use. The man at the shop said the possible incompatibility of the old card should not have damaged the motherboard. Instead, he suggested that once a part of the motherboard is damaged (and we know the PCI Express slot is damaged), the motherboard as a whole can start acting erratically. However, it was beeping at the shop; now it is not.

I'm hoping those on this forum more knowledgeable about hardware than I am can give me some advice on the following questions.

(1) Does everything the shop did and said sound reasonable and likely?

(2) When my new PCI video card arrives from Amazon, if the computer still will not boot or even beep, does this prove I need a new motherboard?

(3) Is there any chance the motherboard could damage the new video card?

(4) Biggest issue: If I need a new motherboard, should I try to find one that accepts the same CPU and memory sticks? So far, I haven't been able to find one online. Or should I bite the bullet and get a new CPU and memory to match the new motherboard?

(5) If I get a new motherboard, new CPU, and new memory, can you suggest some possibilities of what I should look for? I don't want low-end, but for the work I do, I don't need really high-end, state-of-the-art either. I don't play computer games.

Fedora :: Thunderbird Does Not Display Message Content+

Jul 31, 2010

I recently got the problem that Thunderbird does not displays the messages anymore. The e-mails are downloaded form the server, a new email warning is given, but the e-mail cannot be displayed (in fact it is not loaded in the message window. I could only see the TB start page). I cannot even see the old messages.

However, when use "see message source" I can see the e-mails.

I also noticed this message in the error console:

server does not support RFC 5746, see CVE-2009-3555

I use Fedora 12 + thunderbird 3.0.6-1

On another linux box F9+ThB 2.0.0 I do not have that issue.

Today I upgraded to Fedora 13 + TB 3.1.1. This should be the latest one, but I still cannot see the message.

Also, on F13 I got another issue with Firefox 3.6.7. When I switch between the tabs, the tabs will turn black and will not get back to normal for 10-15 sec. It looks liek a random effect because often only part fo the page turns black. This issue appear in the windows of TB 3.1.1 since updated to F13.

My hardware is a Sony SR49 laptop with ATI mobility Radeon HD3470

Have Google chrome and this black page issue is not present. The same with Evolution mail, but I do not like it.

Fedora :: F14 Desktop Folder Gone / Get Content Back?

Apr 2, 2011

I was dragging and dropping content from a folder onto the user desktop folder when suddenly instead of the packed Desktop Folder I got the Home folder with the few normal files that were in it AND one file called Desktop.

(actually, the file name was "Escritorio" and it was a PDF file, and in $HOME/.config/ the file user-dirs.dirs was changed to say XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/" instead of XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Escritorio")

I've searched around but only found how to recreate a folder calles "Desktop" (or "Escritorio") and have it act like such, but not how to eventually recover the original "Desktop" folder AND ALL ITS CONTENTS (quite a lot!)

Is there any way to get the content back?

Fedora is 64bit Fedora 14
Gnome is 2.32
Nautilus is 2.32.2.1

Red Hat / Fedora :: Video - Screen Get Fuzzy With The Content Of The Other Part

Feb 19, 2010

I'm relatively new to Linux from an administration pov, and I'm working as half teacher / half tech admin at a school because they can't afford to pay someone who actually knows this stuff. I am having issue with a Foxconn 761GXM2MA-RS2 motherboard, with what I assume is the video driver. Everything looks dandy when booting until the X Window system starts up; at that point, the screen seems to translate some vertical strips of the display output around, so part of the screen gets real fuzzy with the content of the other part.

I am unable to find any Linux drivers for this motherboard, however I may be a bit lucky. Another computer with the same mobo died, so I took the hard drive from that and stuck it in; walla! Functional video..... but no working LAN. I need some way of copying over the drivers (which I believe are compiled into the kernel...) or access to the video drivers and info on how to install it.
