Microphone (internal & external) is not working.
This is widely known and documented on the internet, and apparently no trivial fixes (alsa settings etc.) will solve this issue.
The best written reference for this is this Ubuntu bug tracker page: [URL]
It also doesn't work in Ubuntu but a person there (c4pp4) managed to create a patch for this.
Do you think this patch could be integrated into Fedora? What could I do to make this happen? Also, do you recommend any other approaches to this issue?

I have a lenovo g555 laptop, about a week old with lucid installed, and whenever i try to play things through the headphones, they come through the speakers as well. I've tried tinkering around in alsa, but the ony two levels are Master and PCM, which seem to adjust both headphones and speakers at once. My audio codec is "Conexant ID 5069"

I don't know what I did but I lost all audio. I'm running F15 with gnome 3. By opening system settings and then sound I don't find anything muted. Under hardware I have 3 devices, the first is RS880 Audio Device (Radeon HD 4200) this one has no sound at all when I click test speakers. Then I have quickcam comm STX and then I have Internal Audio which works by clicking on test speakers.. I have no clue of where to start to fix this but reinstall everything again.

I'm using a HP 7100 laptop and have tried installing the latest versions of Suse, Mandriva, as well as Slakware and have repeatedly been faced with two problems: .1. No Sound: Research via the web suggests that the lack of sound MAY BE due to the particular HP laptop model but there is a doubt here. Sound does work with the Winow$ 7 software but it does not work with any of the above noted Linux softwares. Are any of you familiar with this? .2. KPPP: Are any of you using KPPP with the latest version of Fedora, using KDE4? If so, how did you get it to work?

My PC has the ASUS P7H55-M SI motherboard with the audio chipset VIA VT1708S. Under Fedora 13 (64-bit) I have no sound although the audio chipset seems to be properly recognised and supported by the OS.
I used the alsmixer application and I set the volume for all channels, including PCM to their maximum value but still I get no sound. When the OS boots I hear a "click" sound coming from the audio chipset when it is initialised by the kernel but then the sound stops and I hear nothing.
Note that I do not have this problem with Ubuntu 10.04 but I have the same issue with openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 7. My guess is that F13 and openSUSE 11.3 having newer kernel/alsa software versions exhibit this problem due to some bug introduced to the code.
Here is some extra information:

I've followed the steps outlined in the Fedora FAQ regarding sound issues. I am attempting to play some MP3 files using RhythmBox, and there's no sound. I have dug a bit deeper. I've tried alsamixer, and when I press F6 (Select Sound Card), I see three entries:
- (default)
0 HDA Intel
1 HDA NVidia
I have tried selecting a different sound card. When I select 1, I see this text: "This sound device does not have any controls". I have an NVidia GeForce 480 video card, but it has been suggested to me that I don't want to use it for sound. My speakers are in my monitor. I would assume that has ramifications on how I set things up for sound within Fedora. I have used some kind of sound test utility by executing this at the command prompt:
"speaker-test -c 2 -t wav".
I hear nothing. I don't know what to do next. If anyone can IM with me using Pidgin, that would be perfect

I was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.

After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing, zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

I bought a Diamond Xtreme Sound 5.1 sound card because I had read online that this card was a good choice with Linux and came with universal driver software. I installed the hardware correctly (as it works with WinXP) but I'm not able to get it working with Ubuntu.

I just updated my kernel to 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.x86_64 last night and now I have no system sounds. Audacious plays my mp3's just fine, just as all my multimedia works in my web browser, vlc, etc... The only thing being affected is system sounds. I tried playing a sample with aplay and I got loud, crackling nonsense and this output code...

I'm running Fedora 11 on my inspiron 6400 kernel 2.6.29.5-191.fc11.i686 . Here's a screenshot that describes my problem. When I have my volume at below 50% no sound comes out of my speakers. You can see from the screenshot that when I run $alsamixer -c0 the Master volume goes to 0 when I'm near 50%. Has the audio been offset? Anyone else run into this?

The sound volume is either 100% or mute. I am using KDE and the 32 version of Fedora. I have tried using Gstreamer instead of Xine for my phonon back end, I have tried messing with PulseAudio as well. The only way I can control the volume is by keeping a terminal open with alsamixer and lower the Master and the LFE channels. Just lowering the master channel does not affect the volume except on or off, I have to lower the LFE channel as well.
This would not be that annoying except every time the media changes - one song to another, one flash video to another, etc. the volume resumes at 100%.
I have been using this laptop with Fedora for over 3 years so this is very odd.
Here is my sound card:

I am new to Fedora, after switching over from UBUNTU and I am having a problem with sound ( long story short it will not play sound ).
I used to have similar issues with alsa and pulse-audio when using Ubuntu.
LSPCI-K returns the following information.
Quote:
I have re-installed pulse audio, I have checked and nothing is muted in the alsa-mixer, although it does return, headphones and not Master in the first category.

I've always used Rhythmbox for music and Totem for videos by installing gstreamer-plugins-ugly, gstreamer-plugins-bad and gstreamer-ffmpeg.With the impending switch to Gnome 3, I decided to reinstall Fedora 14 with KDE. I've switched to using JuK for music and VLC for videos. However, JuK and VLC currently have no sound. VLC displays the picture successfully. I tried installing xine-lib-extras-freeworld, but this made no difference. Am I correct in thinking that I should be using xine rather than gstreamer with these applications in KDE?
