Fedora Hardware :: Lenovo Thinkpad Edge And BCM43224?

Jul 28, 2011

I bought a thinkpad Edge 13" with AMD CPU (NV338) and installed f15 on it. First boot : no WiFi...

Code:

lspci -n
...
08:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:0576] (rev 01)
14e4:0576 is actually BCM43224 broadcom chip, supposed to work with broadcom-wl driver (non-free...)

So I installed broadcom-wl + kmod-wl, reboot, check if it really get installed :

Code:

lsmod | grep wl
wl 1954479 0
lib80211 4103 1 wl

Ok but... no WiFi interface visible... Few dmesg :

Code:

dmesg |grep radio
[ 22.289176] thinkpad_acpi: radio switch found; radios are enabled
[ 22.310166] thinkpad_acpi: rfkill switch tpacpi_bluetooth_sw: radio is blocked
(wifi toogle seems not working btw)

Slackware :: Cannot Suspend And Resume - ThinkPad Edge 13 (AMD-ATI)

Jan 19, 2011

Slackware 13.1 installed clean on a new ThinkPad Edge (version 13 inch with AMD Processor and ATI graphics). I can get most of what I want working fine except for suspend and resume. I read somewhere that I should be using generic rather than huge kernel, so I have done that and scrapped ATI proprietary driver in case that was causing problems, but nothing so far has allowed me to suspend and resume with pm-suspend, acpitool suspend or with KDE suspend command. In all cases the screen blanks and the single ThinkPad red LED goes from on to blinking, but nothing seems to wake the machine up again. I had both suspend and hibernate working fine with Slack 13.1 on an older Lenovo laptop and ubuntu users report on their forums that this laptop does suspend and resume "out of the box" so I feel it must be possible.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Microphone On Thinkpad Edge On Maverick?

Oct 30, 2010

I have a Thinkpad edge. I am travelling right now, and will be for the next 2 weeks, and just discovered that my thinkpad's internam microphone won't work. Plugging in an external one won't work either. This means that I won't be able to communicate with friends & family for 2 weeks... any help to patch this problem will be IMMENSELY welcome.

Symptoms are strange: I can go to Sound Preferences, select Analog Stereo Duplex as hardware, click on "Input", change the input volume, mute it, unmute it... everything works fine. However, if I tap against the mike, the input level bit doesn't move at all. Needless to say, nothing sees it.

Here is the output of the ALSA Information script... which looks like greek to me! Help...

Ubuntu :: HDAPS (Hard Disk Protection) On Thinkpad Edge 15

Apr 13, 2011

I am trying to use my accelerometer as joystick just so I know it's working, but I can't figure out how. To my surprise, Ubuntu doesn't seem to have a nice GTK joystick testing dialog. There used to be hdaps-gl out there for testing, but this was for very old models and is only released for Ubuntu 8.04 afaik. So I tried installing neverball for that purpose. It doesn't have options for joystick selection, but apparently it works out of the box with a Thinkpad T61.

Code:
sudo aptitude install tp-smapi-dkms
sudo modprobe tp_smapi
sudo modprobe hdaps

dmesg:
Code:
[720.093604] thinkpad_ec: thinkpad_ec 0.40 loaded.

[720.095786] tp_smapi successfully loaded (smapi_port=0xb2).

[842.861696] input: ThinkPad HDAPS accelerometer data as /devices/virtual/input/input11
[842.861883] hdaps: driver successfully loaded.

lsmod:
Code:
Module Size Used by
hdaps 10772 0
tp_smapi 26194 0
thinkpad_ec 5842 2 hdaps,tp_smapi
(..)

I've also tried to use jstest with
/dev/input/js[0|1]
and
/devices/virtual/input/input10/[many things]
But the former gives static 0 for both axes and the second gives error messages (you're probably not supposed to use it like this).

Slackware :: Choose Between The Lenovo Thinkpad W500 And The Older T61p?

Jul 9, 2010

I'm trying to choose between the Lenovo Thinkpad W500 and the older T61p. The W500 is said to have a higher quality display than the T61p, however there seem to be more problems with running Linux on it. One of the reasons for this is the fact that it has switchable graphics, with one of the GPUs being an ATI FireGL. The older T61p comes with Nvidia Quadro FX only, which as we know is more Linux-friendly.

Which model should I choose? Will certain issues such as being able to suspend / resume be cleared up with newer kernel releases?

I've just joined the linux gang(or I am trying to) I have

-changed bios settings to boot from cd

-didn't work

-used the override feature that gives a bootlist at splash screen but cd drive not listed so I assume the cd is not recognised as a boot disk

-tried the usb/cd maker that comes with in the rar but its looking for the cd image...an .iso file, but I can't find one in folder.

ubuntu says I can run a trial from the cd alongside vista but when I open the executable it just offers intall, no try and if selected starts to install I think I can do the partition thing if I have to but I don't want any vista running on my machine.

Debian Hardware :: Lenovo ThinkPad SL410 - Upgraded Wheezy To Jessie And Lost USBs

May 8, 2015

I run Debian with Gnome on a beat up workhorse ThinkPad. I upgraded to Jessie last week with just one issue. Before the upgrade, I could plug in a USB drive (I use a couple of WD MyPassports most often) and they would mount, read, and write without a hitch.

Since the upgrade, when I plug in a USB drive, the file manager (3.14.1) sees the drive, but when I click on the drive to access/mount it, I receive a dialog box reading: Oops! Something went wrong. Unhandled error message: Error when getting information for file '/media/user/MyPassport1': Input/output error.

If I hit the little “eject” button in the file manager, then mount the drive as root from a command prompt [e.g., mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/external] I can run a directory of the drive, but ls -l /media/external fails. From the command prompt I am unable to perform reads or writes to the drive.

Rebooting into recovery mode (i.e., without Gnome), I get the same behavior with CLI messages reporting I/O errors with the drive. I can run a directory, but ls -l, reads, and writes fail.

This behavior is the same on all three USB ports. It is not limited to these MyPassport devices.

The drives work flawlessly on another headless machine upgraded to Jessie the same day. And on another still running Wheezy.

If I boot the ThinkPad from a live CD (Mint 14, I believe) the USB drives mount, read, and write fine.

My BIOS is up to date, 1.52.

lspci -v says this about USB ports:

Code: Select all00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [UHCI])

Fedora :: Nano - Editing Lines That Go Past The Window Edge?

Nov 22, 2009

I noticed a problem when editing files with nano. This problem happens if the terminal window that I run nano from is not wide enough to show the full line.By way of example below is part of my grub.conf

Code:

title Fedora (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64)
root (hd0,13)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 ro root=UUID=47e4c448-8087-4ec6-a67b-814845a598db noiswmd LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYBOARDTYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us vga=0x370 nouveau.modeset=0
initrd /boot/initramfs-2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64.img

If we assume the code box above is the size of the terminal window, if I edit anything past what will show as the $ sign in nano, it will automatically add a carriage return. So if we take the kernel line above, if say the screen shows at the end root=UUID=$, if say I were then to add 00 the end of the UUID, it will move everything starting from root=UUID= to a new line. Is there some wrap feature that is enable in Fedora for nano?

Fedora :: 15 Locking Up On Thinkpad X41

Jun 2, 2011

I've recently installed F15 on my old thinkpad X41 to give it a go after sticking to ubuntu for quite a bunch of years now.

Somehow there seems to be a problem with the installation tho: the screen freezes up (as does the keyboard) after a while using it - not many programs open, a couple of workspaces enabled, no memory or CPU stress whatsoever - and all i'm left with is a moving mouse cursor. Ctrl + alt + F2 doesn't work and the only solution is to restart the laptop again.

Tried the fallback mode and same thing still happens, so maybe its not a graphic card issue.

Fedora Installation :: Cannot Install On T23 Thinkpad

Aug 16, 2009

I have been trying on and off for over 6 weeks to upgrade from fc10 to fc11. I keep getting the problem where Anaconda cannot format the HD. I originally downloaded the image and it fails when trying to format the fs even if I leave the original fc10 fs in tact I then used the LXF DVD and got the same problem.

I have tried both upgrading and new installs from an fc10 HD but it still fails to format.I have also tried formatting using fc10 (ext3) and have just read if I am using a live CD it must have an ext4 partition on it, but I assume it should be OK with the LXF DVD?I have been using Fedora for over five years now but if I cannot resolve the problem soon I will have to reluctantly change my OS, but before resort to doing this, could someone point me to any information that might help me to resolve the problem?I did try manually partitioning using gparted and ext3 without LVM but that also fails.
