Fedora Hardware :: Getting RTL8192E Wireless Working ?
Jun 28, 2010
Just installed Fedora 13 about an hour ago. I've googlled and googled but can't get my RTL8192E wireless card working in my netbook. I've had it working in ubuntu netbook remix via ndiswrapper but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get ndiswrapper and ndiswrapper gui installed to attempt to install driver.

Has anybody been successful in getting a N130 with a RTL8192E wireless chip to access the internet? Ive tried practically every suggestion quoted on this message board downloading drivers, from Samsung and Realtek which wont open also linux versions with the same result, trying the Ubuntu compilation of Wine etc, etc. Am about to give up, which is a pity, because the Netbook version Ubuntu is very user friendly.

I've got UNE 10.10 installed on a Samsung N150 that uses the RTL8192E for wireless. When the wireless works then it generally works okay, but I'm having problems with reboots and long-running connections. This is different to the mass of posts (mainly from 2009) about the card not working at all, so I started a new thread.Basically, 90%+ of cold boots result in a successful wireless connection, with Network Manager remembering my WPA password.
When the wireless is up then it never obviously drops out, but I've got an app with a long-running connection that seems to disconnect itself occasionally. Looking at Wireshark then it appears that there are a number of retransmits, and a big batch just before it disconnects (which implies that the app is dropping its connection because it thinks the other end disappeared). Running the app on another machine with a different card but through the same release of Ubuntu and the app and the same router doesn't result in retries or drop-outs.On the times when a cold boot doesn't successfully reconnect then it asks for the WPA password, then continues trying, then asks for the WPA password again, then continues trying, then asks...and so on until I rmmod and modprobe the driver.
I originally had problems with the machine refusing to restore after a hibernate/suspend, but this was solved by a tip to rmmod the driver on hibernate/suspend and modprobe it on restore. The wireless will now work okay on some restores, but is more likely to repeat the behaviour described above for the failed cold boot.
Code:
$ lspci -nn
...
05:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8192E Wireless LAN Controller [10ec:8192] (rev 01)[code]....
Attached is a file with some snippets from dmesg around the time of the wireless failure, and the log of what it does after a remove and re-add for comparison of the "correct" messages.

I recently moved into my room-mates house and her wireless was not secure as I was able to log on to it unsecured with my Fedora 12 Laptop. After Securing it with WPA all the windows computers had no problem getting back on to the now secure wireless. Using GNOME I went to SYSTEM then PREFERENCES and NETWORK CONNECTIONS and clicked on the wireless tab and configured wireless security tab and configured for WPA WPA2 Personal. No problems. But when I go to the gnome tool bar and click on the network and see our SSID it wants to use WEP 40bit and others methods but has no selection for WPA.

I have tried endlessly and unsuccessfully to make my wireless work. When I try to activate the device I got the message "Determining IP information for wlan0...SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device"...I had the following output for /sbin/lsmod | grep iwl3945iwl3945 170340 0
which meant my drivers are fine.I downloaded firmware iwlwifi-3945-ucode-15.28.2.8.tgz from intel website which is the latest and put the required file in /lib/firmware/When I checked the sevices to restart the Network Manager and Network Manager Dispatcher I could find only Network Manager service running. I tried installing Network Manager Dispatcher via an RPM but it didnt appear in the list of services.

Have tried both Mythdora 10.21 32bit and 64bit (Fedora 10)o get my wireless to work.Have looked at output from various suggested commands and logs and nothing jumps out. Would appreciate any suggestions. Have attached log with all commands identified and output. Wired ethernet works with no problem.
The router shows no connection activity on the wireless portion from the Linux box. I do have a laptop that I have connected to the router before and after attempting to connect with the Linux system. The only out of the ordinary message I see is (from dmesg):wlan0: privacy configuration mismatch and mixed-cell disabled - disassociate

My wireless card is a Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g 54 Mbps Network Adapter.Wireless Internet worked just fine in Fedora 10 and is working just fine in Fedora 11, however, when I installed Fedora 12, it just wouldn't work. It would state that the Wireless Networks were disconnected and wouldn't allow me to enable Wireless or to enable Networking. had to revert back to Fedora 11 (where the wireless Internet was working once again)I have since made a Live CD of Fedora 13, but I had the same problem. Would it be that these newer versions of Fedora don't have the driver for this card? If so, is there a way to install it or to check?

Supported chipsets:
8188
8191
Terry Polzin on the Fedora list today posted a request for help with getting a Realtek 8188S(U) working. I replied saying that I had a similar device and shared my experiences.
I told him that there is a driver in staging which supports the device, but that Fedora only ships quality working drivers by default, so no staging drivers are included. It's easy enough to get them though, just add the RPMFusion Free repository and install their kmod-staging package which (as the name might give away) includes the staging drivers for the current kernel.
Once you have that installed, the r8192s_usb module can be loaded, but the device still needs external (presumably proprietary) firmware to work. Fortunately, although the driver available from Realtek does not include it, it was included on the disk, and is also available in the Billion driver from their website. So, once you have put the firmware in the right place, the device just works.
Here are the steps to get it working (you will need to have RPMFusion enabled, and run these as root).
Code:
yum install kmod-staging unzip
depmod -a
wget http://au.billion.com/downloads/3011N/3011N_Linux_Driver.zip
unzip -j 3011N_Linux_Driver.zip "*rtl8192sfw.bin" -d RTL8192SU
[Code].....
The main downside here (apart from the obvious) is that you will be relying on RPMFusion to build an updated kmod-staging version when you get a Fedora kernel update. Sometimes this might not happen before you get your kernel, so when you reboot, you lose your wireless (because there's no driver). If so, boot to your older kernel for a while, or build the driver yourself, or create an akmod instead of kmod.

Wireless wasn't working, so I set up kmod-wl and broadcom-wl for my kernel version as per the HOWTO on this forum. lsmod | sort shows wl as loaded, no conflicting drivers.iwlist scan:"Failed to read scan data: Invalid argument"lspci shows BCM4313 802.11b/gI've tried everything I can find online, and nothing seems to be working.

Today I updated my system, I noticed that KDE would be upgraded to 4.3. Upon restart of my computer my wireless didn't work (and still doesn't) and I cannot use the desktop effects anymore (probably the graphics driver). Is there any way I can fix those problems, or downgrade my system so everything just works? I'm using Fedora 11 KDE (64-bits). And I've kept a list of all updates. Ok, I figured that it was a different version of the kernel, the update set the other kernel to default. I'm back to 2.6.29.6-217.2.8.fc11.x86_64 and everything works.

There is a realtek rtl8187 on my board, and windows can browse and connect to wireless networks. I installed F11 and it was capable of browse and connect to my wireless network - even if it was really slower than windows. Anyway I did some yum update+reboots and now NetworkManager don't list any wireless network, and the checkbox "Enabled wireless" in the right click menu disappeared (I can see "Enable networking" only now). What can I do?

I have installed the Fedora 14, and a Dlink usb wireless adapter (DWA-125) with rt2870 chipset, but this one isn't working with my OS.
I typed the lsusb command
Code:
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 07d1:3c0d D-Link System DWA-125 Wireless N 150 Adapter(rev.A1) [Ralink RT2870]
I downloaded the drivers from YUM, the rt2870 and also kmod-rt2870. I thing that this step is ok.
I typed the dmesg | grep 2870 command
Code:
[21421.956342] usbcore: registered new interface driver rt2870
When I open the /proc/modules file, it shows the line bellow

I'm using Fedora 14, 64-bit. My wi-fi adapter is Intel 5100 AGN on a Lenovo laptop. The wi-fi router is Zyxel. From time to time, I'm getting a black message, that a kernel component has crashed (or something similar). Here are the error details:
Package: kernel
Latest Crash:Sun 20 Feb 2011 04:27:54 PM
Command: not_applicable
Reason: WARNING: at net/wireless/core.c:633 wdev_cleanup_work+0x52/0xbd [cfg80211]()
Comment: None
Bug Reports:
In most cases, after that, I'm loosing the internet connection. I can't open any website, can't ping the router (which is my default gateway) and now it happened even without any error, which really pissed me off. Logging out and back in doesn't help, I need to make a full reboot to get back my internet connection.
Under Windows 7 everything is working fine and I'm not having any trouble with the internet connectivity! I had Fedora 11 32-bit before and it was also working normally!

I just recently purchased a new laptop, Compaq Presario CQ60. The first thing I did out of the box is install FC11 beta. I've had to tweek a few things, but for the most part I'd put it up against any MS based laptop. My eth0 has no issues, however my wireless connection can't find the network.

Kernel driver in use: ath5k
Kernel modules: ath5k
I try to activate wlan0 in system-config-network an I get - Activation (wlan0/wireless): association took too long, failing activation.
I know our wireless router is working because my daughter can connect with her Vista laptop.
This is the first I've played with Linux/wireless, I'm sure others have struggled as well.

I have a wireless router at home, but I usually have my laptop connected to it through an ethernet cable. It had always worked with no problems until some time last week when the wired network stopped working (but the wireless still works with no problem). At first I thought that it was some update, but no. My laptop works ok with the wired network at my office, and I also tried a different laptop at home and it didn't work. It's not the cable either, I tried a different one. I haven't changed any settings in my router. So I really don't know what's going on. I just find it weird that the router's wired networking suddenly stops working but the wireless still works fine...
