Fedora Hardware :: Can't Wake Up Display

Jul 14, 2010

Running Fedora 12 with all the latest updates installed.

Using Radeon card with the experimental Mesa 3D driver. (The opensource stuff rather than ATi's closesource driver.)

Most of the time when it goes into screensaver, and turns off the monitor, it can't be wake up again.

The OS is still running, I can access it's web server, ssh, everything, just can't use the desktop!!

I have tried nomodeset and pcie_asm=off in grub but neither of them fixes the problem.

What else should I try?

Debian :: Compaq Cq50 Display Won't Wake Up

Jun 25, 2015

I came back to debian after trying many others because it installed flawlessly and worked. I'm on the testing channel and upgrade nearly everyday and after a recent upgrade my xsession (Xfce4) display won't wake up any more after I close and re-open the lid. I know the box is awake because I can go to a ctr-alt-fn console login and use it normally. How can I track this down? And is there some way I can restart the gui display from the console without losing what was running before I shut the lid? Right now the only way I can recover is to restart the computer.

Ubuntu Installation :: Display Doesn't Wake Up After Suspension

May 14, 2011

I upgraded from 10.11 to 11.4 and as far as I can see most things work as they did before. However, I have my machine to "go to sleep" (is that suspension or hibernation?) after 2 hours and when I, now after the upgrade, press the "wake up button" the machine fires up but the screen remains down. Ie, the screen is actually not receiving any signals from the computer? Any setting I can change? It worked fine with 10.11!

Fedora :: Cannot Wake From MCE Remote In New Kernel?

Jul 17, 2010

I am running a Fedora 12 installation in my bedroom as a slave mythtv frontend. I have set it up to be able to put the PC to sleep and wake up with a MCE remote. This has been working for near on a year now with no issues. Yesterday I did a yum update and ended up with kernel 2.6.32.16-141.fc12.i686.PAE (up from 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686.PAE)

Now everything seems to work fine however I can put the PC to sleep with the remote but I cannot wake it up with the remote. a cat of /proc/acpi/wakeup shows

Code:
DeviceS-state Status Sysfs node
SMB0 S4 disabled pci:0000:00:03.2
USB0 S4 enabled pci:0000:00:04.0
USB2 S4 enabled pci:0000:00:04.1
US15 S4 enabled pci:0000:00:06.0

[Code]...

At the grub prompt if I select the old kernel 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686.PAE then the computer will start up with no graphical prompt (need to figure out how to work kmod-nvidia i guess), but I can use the remote to put the pc to sleep and wake it up again. Also using the old kernel and telneting into the PC I see that /proc/acpi/wakeup is no different. Does anyone have any clues on hoiw to get wakeup to work with this new kernel? Or how do I roll back everything to the older kernel and get my graphics driver back (i tried to reboot with old kernel and then yum erase kmod-nvidia-PAE and then yum install kmod-nvidia-PAE but no luck.

Another thing worth noting is that I can wake the computer with the power button, just not the USB remote. THere is also nothing in the motherboard bios for setting wake on USB.

Fedora :: Wake Ups (60000) Per Second Reported By PowerTop In F12

Dec 11, 2009

I've ran "powertop" on my computer and it showed horrible amount of wake-ups per second:

Code:
Cn Avg residency P-states (frequencies)
C0 (cpu running) (26.7%) 2.81 Ghz 100.0%
polling 0.0ms ( 0.0%) 1400 Mhz 0.0%
C1 16.2ms (60.5%) 1050 Mhz 0.0%
C2 0.0ms (12.8%) 700 Mhz 0.0%
350 Mhz 0.0%

Wakeups-from-idle per second : 63944.8 interval: 5.0s
no ACPI power usage estimate available

Top causes for wakeups:
45.1% ( 15.6) <interrupt> : pata_atiixp
26.0% ( 9.0) <kernel core> : hrtimer_start_range_ns (tick_sched_timer)
9.2% ( 3.2) <kernel core> : hrtimer_start (tick_sched_timer)
5.8% ( 2.0) <kernel core> : add_timer_on (clocksource_watchdog)
1.7% ( 0.6) <interrupt> : ohci_hcd:usb4, radeon, yenta
1.7% ( 0.6) Xorg : queue_delayed_work (delayed_work_timer_fn)

Suggestion: increase the VM dirty writeback time from 5.00 to 15 seconds with:
Echo 1500 > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs
This wakes the disk up less frequently for background VM activity
Q - Quit R - Refresh W - Increase Writeback time
If I wait it decreases to 50000, but it is still huge!

Situation is duplicated after complete F12 re-install. All defaults are used and no changes performed after install. Just checked again and let computer run idle for a while. Powertop reports 79604 wake-up per second, even more than before. Again, the top cause is "pata_atiixp". Also, performing suggestions of powertop shown at the bottom of the program does not help either. That decreases wake-up by a few hundreds only. Wake-ups are still well over 50000.

Fedora Networking :: Wireless Wake-on-lan From A Windows Box?

Dec 23, 2009

I been a windows guy forever, and wanted to make the switch. Anyways, I am hoping to do a wireless wake-on-lan from a windows box. I have an older laptop that has a dead screen and I am trying to use it as a server. So, I want to be able to VNC the linux box from my vista machine. I think that's going to be straight forward. But, the linux machine doesn't have a builtin wireless card, so I am using a USB wireless deal. If I let the laptop hibernate/sleep after being idle, can I wake from my vista box over my network?

Fedora :: Crontab - Alarm Clock Functionality To Wake Up Computer

Jul 6, 2010

I have a feature that keeps me going back to Mac every night, and I was wondering if there was an equivalent. I have a nice app called alarm clock on Mac that plays music from my library on specified days of the week and times AND can wake the computer from sleep to do so. I was wondering if there was a Linux equivalent, such as crontab, that could do all those things. It's the last barrier to almost full time Linux use.

Fedora Servers :: Setting Up Network In The Right Way + Wake On Unicast Messages?

Jul 11, 2010

I have a Fedora server at home. I don't want it to be running all the time to reduce the power usage and be more green It only works , whet it is really needed. So when it is not in use (no ssh or http connections have been active for some time), a custom python script suspends it. I have set it to wake up on unicast messages, so when somebody connects to it, the server wakes up.In Fedora 12 everything worked fine: when the server was sleeping and you connected to it using ssh or a web browser, the client waited for couple of seconds until the server was up and then connected (actually it worked even when server was turned off: the command "ssh [user]@[server]" just waited until server was booted up and then connected.)

Now I installed Fedora 13 on the server. When I try to connect to the server when it's sleeping, the client waits for some time (and server wakes up), then the connection just times out. When I try to connect again, it works. When server is up and running, I can connect to it. So when it is sleeping I have to connect twice: first to wake it up and then connect again to log in.Do you have any ideas what is causing this problem, as it is really annoying for me and I don't want to have it running all the day. Also, I have not set up the network in the best way, I think. To start the network at boot, i have put the command

Code:

ifup eth0
to /etc/rc.local.

To start the network when resurming from suspend, I have creted a script with the same command in /usr/lib64/pm-utils/sleep.d. It works, but it does not seam to be the *right* way to do this. Maybe this is also causing the first problem. So how have you managed to get a working network connection on your Fedora 13 headless server?

Red Hat / Fedora :: GRUB Of Previously Installed Distro / Enable Wake On Lan In Scientific (RHEL)?

Jan 2, 2010

I have two problems. I installed a RHEL variant (scientific linux) on an already dual boot system with ubuntu and vista.

It replaced GRUB with (I think an older) GRUB version and to add to that I cannot see my ubuntu ditro anymore. is there a way of reinstalling the GRUB that came with ubuntu then adding the RHEL distro to it?

my second problem is that I cannot figure out how to enable wake on lan in scientific linux (RHEL). on ubuntu I would just write a small script and update all runlevels to run it at startup. what is the alternative on redhat?

Debian :: Automatically Restarts When Using Wake-on-lan

Aug 28, 2015

I am hosting a home server to make developing stuff easier. And because I don't need my server all day and night I automatically start and shut it down. For starting I use Wake-On-Lan (etherwake) and to shut it down I am using my RaspberryPi. Finally I have a problem doing that: When I use WOL to start my home server it works perfect. But when I try to shut it down, I have to do that twice. After the first shutdown it restarts automatically even when no WOL-Package is sent.

I am using Debian 8.1 Mate as os.

My stop script is:

Code: Select allsshpass -p<password> ssh root@server.home.lan shutdown -h now

and I start it with

Code: Select allsudo etherwake <mac address>

both times using a cron job on my RPi.

Ubuntu :: Monitor Goes Into Sleep - Won't Wake Up

Apr 27, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop and everynow and then I get this annoying problem. If I walk away for a bit, just upstairs to use the bathroom, sometimes when I come back the monitor is off and the power light is blinking. You know, like what monitors usually do when they are still powered on but the screensaver is done playing. However, this happens to me well before the 10 minutes that the screensaver is supposed to end.

It does not always happen, and I can't really isolate what may be causing it, as I never take a note of what I'm doing when I go pee. HOwever, I rarely do anything other that run VLC, Chrome, Firefox, or OpenOffice Writer.

The problem is that the screen won't wake up. Moving the mouse does nothing. Jamming some keys does nothing. Trying to go to text terminal does nothing. I have to either REISUB or hold down the power button on the tower.

Ubuntu Servers :: Can't Get Wake On LAN To Work

Aug 3, 2010

I'm trying to get WOL to work on my web server built on an ASUS P4A800D-X motherboard (which supports wol).I have it enabled in my BIOS and I've tried several different tools with no results, including my dd-wrt based router which has this functionality built into the firmware. All the guides I've read say it has to be enabled in the driver settings in the Windows Control panel before it will work, but I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04.

Is there any special steps that must be taken in the OS to enable my web server to power on from the LAN? I've never used this feature before and would like to just shove my web server in a corner some where and have 100% remote control from my main PC.
