Fedora Hardware :: Acer Notebooks Fail Play Of CSS'ed DVD's?
Mar 20, 2011
HARDWARE: Two Acer Aspire 5251-1513 V120 based notebooks and one 5534-1086 dual-core Athlon; an MSI Wind U123, an HP G60-231WM dual core Athlon and an antiquated Compaq Presario (that I only keep around as it has RS-232, Parallel and PCMCIA ports).
OS Platform: F13 on MSI Wind, Fedora 14 on the others. All kept up with yum. All purportedly have proprietary codecs installed, including libdvdcss, installed thru the easyLife script. (NOTE: the HP has not had yum run recently)
SOFTWARE INVOLVED: Totem, VLC, Kaffeine, MPlayer, K9Copy. PROBLEM: Failure to play or backup legit (ie: purchased DVD's), which only happens on the Acer platforms -- the MSI, HP and Compaq work fine, as do the desktop (generic MSI based clones) systems here.
SYMPTOMS: Totem gives "cannot read resource;" VLC fails silently; K9Copy segfaults. All media players & copiers successfully play / copy previously decss'd files TROUBLESHOOTING ATTEMPTS: I've gone thru most of the threads here, looked at gst-inspect, made libdvdcss from source, copied libdvdcss from the HP (working x86_64 machine) to an Acer, built libdvdcss from source. I've also checked the permissions of the /dev/devices, they're 777

I tried to install ubuntu 10.10 NBR on an acer aspire one and the install crashed, it is a known problem but my main problem is that the 250gb SATA is partitioned in two and then i deleted linux swap and the ubuntu 10.10 partition to make free space.
a) how can i resize the windows 7 (dreadful OS) to what size it originally was
b) if i install an older version of ubuntu (10.04) will it boot up as if i chose the partition alongside other OS or will i have to install a bootloader (I have never done a specify partitions install)
C) is it that acer aspire one's cant load any version of ubuntu (I know a mad idea as ubuntu has many drivers and should work with it.)

I am new to Linux, when trying to play a DVD movie on computer through MOvie Player I get the following error:
An Error Occured:
Can not read from source!
The movies will not play with VLC or SMC player either, but will play on windows. I believe it might be the driver.

First my setup: Hardware Genuine AMD Athlon - 512 mg Mem - Nvida card & latest drivers - 80gb & 40gb drives - dvd read only & cdrw.
OS: Ubuntu 10.04 - tried standard desktop then the alt version now back to standard desktop.
Problem: Both optical drives recognise data disks and show them on the desktop. The dvd drive recognises any dvd and not only shows it on the desktop but also flashes up a requester box asking me which program I would like to use to play it. Nothing happens when I insert a music cd in either drive. Rhythm Box Music Player does not show a music cd available to play but does however show my iTouch when I connect it via usb. Btw iTouch is shown on the desktop when connected. What have I done: Fstab had no entries for either drive so I've researched and entered a line for each. The dvd fs is entered as iso9660,udf. The cdrw is using "proc" as a file system as it's the only thing that will show as mounted in Mtab. All else fails. Both drives show up in System/Administration/Disk Utility (irrespective of Fstab entries), therefore the system can see them. Also investigating through the Terminal shows both drives. how to listen to music cds on ubuntu 10.04. I wish to save my music then upload the same to my iTouch. It all worked so well in 8.04.

I am having difficulty in deciding on a linux laptop for going to school. I will be attending college for a Bachelor in Flight Technology and I need a notebook to take to class with me for notes (So nothing too awkward and heavy). I would prefer one without Windows pre-installed.So far I have considered:-Verix 1656 from zareason, however I am concerned about battery life and screen brightness (I like very dim screens, that which can be obtained with LED backlighting)-Serval Professional from system76, however again I am concerned about battery life (I hear it only gets about 1 hour)-Apple Macbook Pro, however it seems way too expensive for what it offers and might not have the best linux support.
For my battery life concerns, I believe that I could probably get away with running a text editor on the command line without having to boot into a GUI so I can save battery life. I also don't want to get a netbook because I'm likely to do *some* gaming, programming and 3d modeling in my spare time. Are there any other notebooks that I should consider from other places before making my decision? I would try emailing the college, but they are busy with admissions stuff and probably won't care too much seeing as a computer is not a course requirement.

I have the same issue as described in [URL] On my Lenovo w500 which throws following error message while installing
Code:
Unexpected exit with status 0x0009
I think I traced down the problem to notebooks that have two graphic cards installed as the w500 has. One solution would be to deactivate the ATI card which I can't on my machine. I guess 11.04 does not support Lenovo w500.

I am looking for an automated backup system and I like bacula. I have 3 Notebooks and a Desktop computer that need regular backup. Now I don't want to let them run all night just to do the backuping, so I was thinking I could use wake-on-lan to have bacula wake up the machines, then do the backups, and shut them down afterswards. While this may work with devices on the ethernet, it won't work with the Notebooks on the wifi. So is it possible to have the Notebooks schedules to automatically wake up from suspend or shutdown ?
Or is it possible to interject a shutdown command if it is after a certain hour and call the bacula director to start the backup now?

I had my mother purchase an album on the Ubuntu One Music Store in 10.10 for me, since it was kind of a gift from last Christmas. It downloaded fine (albeit with a browse to my Ubuntu One storage account from FF), and it synced fine, but when I go to play any of the songs on my iPod Nano 3G, the progress bar that shows how finished the song is while playing is stuck at 0:00. Anybody know what the problem is?

Inspired by some recent posts from oldcpu I decided to grab some audio from my Logitech webcam, just for the fun of it. openSUSE 11.3 i586 is in use.
Code:
> lsusb
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:0991 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Pro for Notebooks
> arecord -l
**** Liste der Hardware-Geräte (CAPTURE) ****
Karte 0: Intel [HDA Intel], Gerät 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog]
[Code]...
It works! Though I have to say that the audio quality is mediocre (to say the best). I blame it on the quality of the built-in microphone of this camera. It sounds like it was recorded in a giant bathroom.

I used to be able to use the NFL game center on nfl.com to watch the play-by-play when I was using Fedora 10.Now that I am on Fedora 12 it no longer works. I am able to click into a game and see all the info but the play-by-play drive chart no longer displays anything. Does anyone out there know how to get this working?

To get multimedia working, or explain what I'm doing wrong.
The problem is that none of the video players doesn't play video, they show only black window and play audio.
I have Fedora 11 Leonidas, fully up-to-date.
I have installed rpmfusion and livna repository.
I have installed following packages:
When I try to play video with totem, it doesn't output any error, but just doesn't play video.
with mplayer:
xine and kaffeine just say:
vlc:
I tried several different files, which works perfectly in windows and ubuntu.
I installed windows binary codecs for mplayer to /usr/lib/codec/

I searched the Internet for software that is compatible with Linux and is capable of editing PDF documents. This is not counting anything that doesn't allow PDF as both an input and output. Also not counting anything that imports a PDF into some sort of image file, whereupon it loses all track of textual content. Found a grand total of one product, PDF Edit.
Installed PDF Edit. Easy. Tried just using it without reading instructions. Not intuitive. Googled and followed the instructions to edit my document. Not happening. Says my document is read only which it's not. Says it's linearized. Maybe so, but Acrobat never complained. Researched some more. Must de-linearize. Did that. Now technically I can edit the text content fields of the document but when I try that, the changes don't appear on the screen. All I really want is to place some annotation text boxes in my document, type information into them so it looks right on the screen, save and print it. Gave up on PDF Edit. Also attempted Acrobat 8, Acrobat 9, Nuance PDF Converter 4, and PDFill PDF Editor, in Wine, each attempt a similar nightmare. Will some kind soul suggest something, or show me the error of my ways? I really like Fedora and it seems a shame to scurry back to XP for this minor task.

I was told that this command would upgrade from 12 to 13, while avoiding the boot space problem.
Everything seemed to go well, - all 1691 rpms downloaded to: /var/cache/yum/x86_64/13/fedora/packages/zip-3.0-1.fc13.x86_64.rpm, and then halted with the following message:
I'm not exactly a noobe, but this leaves me clueless. Can I salvage the upgrade?

I have upgraded three machines to Fedora 13.
On all of them any attempt to mount an nfs drive fails with:
Code:
This happens immediately - within a few tenths of a second at most. It happens whether I use mount -a(mounts are listed in the fstab file) or a full mount command. It happens on both 32-bit and 64-bit installs.
Nothing appears in the messages log file on either the server or the client machine.
It was working in Fedora 12.
Iptables and ip6tables are both disabled. nfsd is running.
Hosts.allow and hosts.deny both exist on the client, but are empty. They contain nothing but comment lines.
I can ping the server and run ssh shells to it. I can open Web pages in Firefox.
The server is CentOS 5.4.

I just bought a new Acer desktop, installed Fedora 10. No problem getting into run level 3 but if I try to start X I get the following at the bottom of the message
Fatal server error
no screens found
xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): unable to connect to x server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error
I have dug around the internet to see what might be wrong. There are some articles from years ago but to be honest some of it is beyond me.

I am trying to install Fedora 12 on an Acer Aspire AMD 64 2 with 1 GB of memory.
I downloaded the Fedora 12 live CD Fedora-12-X86_64-ISO.
When I try to boot from that CD, I get a message "irq 17 too bust" and the system hangs before finishing the boot process. So I have very little to go on.
Ps. I previously installed Kubuntu 9.1 without any problems.

I am very new to Linux and Fedora. I installed newest Fedora to a friend's Acer emachine E725 but the wireless does not work. Originally it had a Moblin linux installed on it but my friend does not speak English so I had to install for her a Hungarian version linux. Fedora seems to be quite user friendly but this wireless problem makes me worry. The wireless was working perfectly on Moblin, the wireless manager showed all available wifi connections and I could chose the desired one and the laptop connected to it. Unfortunately on Fedora and other Linux distributions this does not work. This laptop has a hardware button to switch the wireless On and Off but under Fedora it does not function.
