Fedora :: Downside Of Removing The Plymouth?

May 24, 2011

I miss the old days of the screen printing [OK][OK][OK] when loading. I had tweaked my plymouth to achieve the same but seems like an update to F15 undid what I had done. if I yum remove plymouth, will my PC still boot?

Debian Multimedia :: Downside To The Multiple DE?

Jun 5, 2011

I've had a good run with Gnome for many years. But the reports about the drastic interface changes in Gnome 3 are very disturbing so I figured it was time to start exploring other DE options. Is there a downside to installing multiple DE/WM combos? Will doing so bork Gnome on my shiny new Squeeze install? I've just got everything tweaked and would not be happy to see it go south.

I understand all I need to do is apt-get install xxxx-desktop and let 'er rip. I don't like to play with my system much. Stable and boring is fine with me. Trying new things always makes me a little nervous so I thought I'd get some feedback from those of you who do this kind of thing all the time.

Fedora :: Removing Notifications And Safely Removing Drives?

Aug 25, 2010

These should be my last pleas for help with regard to Fedora 13. I've been unable to turn off the notifications that appear in the top right corner, despite a decent amount of searching on google. I can't remove any notifications package without removing a bunch of important software along with it. Also, F13 refuses to "Safely Remove" either of my external disks. I have to yank out the usb cord, touching wood each time.

Fedora :: 12. Plymouth Cannot Set Default Theme?

Dec 7, 2009

really hate the new default plymouth theme in Fedora since 11, as such I'd rather use either Solar or Spinfinity as the default plymouth themes, however F12 for some reason keeps ignoring me when I set the default theme.I downloaded all necessary packages for this and for some reason unknown to me when I boot the computer the default theme still appears, unless I switch to a VT (press F1) and then back to the plymouth boot (ESC) does it change to the theme I selected, be it Solar or Spinfinity. The symlink in /usr/share/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth is point to the right theme (i.e. /usr/share/plymouth/themes/spinfinity/spinfinity.plymouth), and yet it does not load at boot by default, do I have to remove the other "default" theme or what?

Fedora :: KDE 4.3.4 Broke Startup While Using Plymouth?

Jan 2, 2010

I have Fedora 12 x86_64 running the nvidia drivers from rpmfusion. I set them up using the howto's from rpmfusion and the good people here. I also run KDE as my desktop and try to keep gnome stuff to a minimum. Everything has been running fine, including the opening splash graphics.

I run updates today, and installed the update for KDE 4.3.4. The next time I booted, the startup animation ran, but hung once it finished. I know the system didn't totally crash because I was able to give it a three-finger salute and it rebooted. The next boot I set my startup parameters to disable the plymouth splash screen, and everything started up fine.

Fedora :: F15 Plymouth - Can't Get To Login Screen

Jun 15, 2011

When I change the boot up theme in plymouth from the default, Fedora will not give me a login screen, or leave the plymouth splash screen, I like the spinfinity theme, however when I set that I cannot get to the login screen unless I hit esc when it is booting and never let the splash screen come up. This happens with both gdm and kdm. Anyone else having this problem?

Fedora :: Disable Plymouth Mounting Of Encrypted Partitions?

Jan 23, 2010

I just updated a system to Fedora 12. It has the same partition setup as the previous Fedora 11, but now when booting it pauses with a padlock icon next to a text entry box.I'm assuming it's trying to get my password to mount the encrypted partitions I have on the drive.

However, most of the time when I'm using that computer, I don't want those partitions mounted, and I would prefer to do a luksOpen/mount manually during those times I need the data thereon. Is there a way to get plymouth to ignore those encrypted partitions while it's booting, so that bootup doesn't pause for user input? I have an empty /etc/crypttab and the partitions in question are not in /etc/fstab.
For anyone who's looking at this, pass "rd_NO_LUKS" on the command line to disable the initrd from looking for encrypted partitions to try to mount.

Debian Multimedia :: Removing Epiphany Without Removing Half The System?

May 31, 2011

I know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software

Ubuntu Installation :: Removing Evolution From Synaptic Vs Just Removing The Applet

Feb 27, 2011

what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.

im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.

all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.

Fedora :: How About Removing Duplicate File

Mar 12, 2010

Anyone know of a good Linux application that will remove duplicate files interactively? I've recently spent a lot of time (read weeks) pruning my music collection, basically by hand. and now I'm moving on to my family photos. Most of the work with the music was done under Windows XP. As for the photos, I have a fantastic Windows application, D'Peg, that I had actually purchased some years ago. This app rocks for Windows. In my opinion it's so good that I would happily pay double the asking price. However, I'd prefer to use Linux if possible, so, what's out there, anything that is worth it's salt? Currently playing around with Picasa.
