Fedora :: 15 VirtualBox Flickering Graphics And White Screens

I just got Fedora 15 running on my VirtualBox 4.0.8 with GuestAdditions installed. When I click on activities I often either see a white screen instead of the fedora desktop and activites menu or things flicker and where my windows are supposed to be I see just blue squares. I have no idea why this is happening and how to trouble shoot this. I did reinstall VirtualBox again after I upgrades all packages, but the problem remains. Sometimes Fedora even starts up in the standard mode without the cool new Gnome 3 display with the menu to the left..

i was wondering if anyone else was experiencing any flickering with flash? for instance, if you're playing a game, some of the objects and graphics in the game randomly flicker, or if you're watching a video on videos with annotations, the annotations frequently flicker.

Ever since the problem with Flash started up a few days ago, (Videos Lagging/jumpy/jerky horridly.) I decided to finally switch from 9.10 to 10.04...all was going well until a few minutes ago while I was browsing themes and running Konversation, the skin flickered black/green a few times then white vertical lines started appearing down from the top of the screen to about the middle, (Almost looked like the teeth on a haircomb). I had to then shutdown and restart. What id like to know is are the two connected (My earlier flash problem and this) or how I can fix it, so far it hasn't happened again but I'm starting to worry, I've never had problems with Ubuntu until a few weeks ago.

I've been trying to install Fedora 10 but the screen flickers about once every two seconds (not at set intervals though sometimes 5 seconds sometimes < 1 second).I've been searching around and all posts I've read about hh ave pointed to an nVidia driver bug which would make sense since I have an nVidia card but these were all posted back in summer of '08 so I'm not sure if it is still lingering.

I have a problem with the screen flickering on fedora 15 (and lots of other modern distros, eg: ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 and opensuse 11.4) i think it is something to do with xorg.conf as older linux distros work fine
so i added one using

but i still have a slight flicker. my monitor takes an input at 50-60Hz how do i set that up in the config file or is that not what is causing that? and can somebody recommend me a nice icon set for fedora

Is it just me or does a page full of animated GIFs act funny on Fedora 14?
Example: [url]
Half the emoticons like to flash and disappear and things, even right clicking one and doing "view image" links to a gif that keeps disappearing and flickering. But when saved and viewed in another program (aMSN for instance) the GIF is fine.

I have a Dell Vostro 3300, i5 460 processor with a NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card. I'm doing a KUBUNTU 10.10 (Maverick) install with the following results. The Live CD boots just fine to, "TEST," or "Install." Installation goes fine. However, the graphics card being used is the Intel i915. I have tried installing the NVIDIA drivers directly from the, "Additional Drivers," tool and after the reboot I get through the boot screen to the console. I try to manually startx and I get the errors, "no device found," "no screens found." The second install I tried purging and blacklisting the nouveau drivers and entering safe mode. Then using apt-get install nvidia-current. After that, nvidia-xconfig. Same results.
The third attempt I re-installed and this time downloaded the drivers from the Nvidia site (version 256.53). Blacklisted nouveau, remove all nvidia, updated initramfs, etc. The install went fine however I still end up at a console after boot with the same messages as above. No device found, no screens found. I've tried searching through the forum and web and have tried things like adding the modset option along with many other hacks, tips and fixes. still, no go.I can live with the Intel graphics for now although I lose 512MB of memory. Unfortunately there is no way to disable or change this set-up in the BIOS. I've seen quite a few bug reports at Launchpad:
1. Is this something I should just wait til a fix comes? Will a fix come?
2. Is there, or will there be an official Updated Ubuntu Guide for Maverick to install NVIDIA drivers with this tecnology?
3. Lastly, is there anything else I should try??

I have this situation: I installed F13 on my laptop having an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator. The screen of my laptop was flickering and i did a 'yum update'. The flickering didn't stop, but after suspending the system once, the flickering stops and everything is fine. Now after each reboot i have to suspend the system once for the flickering to stop. Please help.
After discussing in #fedora in freenode, some people asked for these (i'm posting in case you need them too):

I have been trying to enable compiz on my fedora 14, but when i enable the desktop effects the graphics just crashes and fedora freezes. When i type lspci -nnk | grep VGA for the graphics card i get:
I made alot of research on how to get Intel graphics work on Fedora, but couldnt find any solution
Same problem I had with Fedora Core 12 and 13.

i have xterminus installed. i also have a white block over the first letter in my username and when i begin typing, the 'block-type cursor' just leaves full white spaces behind and i cannot read my text at all. even when i delete back over the white spaces, they stay whited out.

I installed compiz on squeeze. I followed the steps on [url] , everything seems fine except my gnome-terminal shows me a white-in-white screen, seems like both the background and foreground are white, I tried to change the gnome-terminal profile, it doesn't work, after I disable compiz, gnome-terminal back to normal. I tried to install xterm, it can work, but it not easy to use for me, I still want to use gnome-terminal,

My setup:
One computer running F12.
NVidia with 2 CRT outputs, and one S-Video/TV output
Standard PS2 keyboard and mouse
USB (wireless) keyboard and mouse
Sound card w/ Optical SPDIF, and standard analog front/rear outputs
At present, I have CRT-0 connected to a standard monitor that I can get resolutions up to 1920x1440. TV output is connected to a flat panel monitor, with a max resolution of 1024x768. SPDIF audio output connected to TV system, and analog output (front only) connected to destop speakers. Note that the monitor/speakers are in one room, and the TV w/ SPDIF audio is in another, with the USB kbd/mouse.
I can get a cloned twin view set up on both, with the USB kbd & mouse/TV/SPDIF mirroring the monitor/PS2 kbd & mouse/speakers - but only at a max resolution of 1024x768. That by the way needs to be the virtual screen size for the TV. If I want to switch between the two max resolutions (one when using the monitor, the other the TV) I have to edit xorg.conf and change the modes line for the display, then restart the X server.
I would like to have the monitor set up to its max 1920x1440 resolution with a virtual screen size the same, and the TV set up for 1024x768 with that for its virtual screen size. I also would like the separate kbd and mice to operate with the respective screens. Ideally, each screen would be independent of the other - running two different apps on each output, similar to separate workspaces. Is something like this possible? It's a pain to have to re-edit xorg.conf and restart X every time I want to switch from watching TV to working on my monitor.

After dowloading and install the latest x64 drivers, i am unable to setup my dual monitors. Everytime i go to CCC > multi display > single display desktop, as soon as i hit Apply the window just disappears. If i go to Monitors and turn the other monitor ON, i get an error popping up saying something along the lines of "required virtual size does not fit"
Card: ATI 4870
Moniors: 24" Dell, 20" Dell
Desktop Env: gnome

This happen on a samsung NC10 (graphic chip: Intel 945GME). When I boot linux + gnome3 and no external screen is attached to my laptop, then, gnome 3 boots with the gnome shell (gnome 3 shell). If, at this stage (when logged in), I plug an external monitor to the laptop (and configure it using the monitor config tool), then I can run gnome 3 shell on my external monitor as well... BUT:
If I log in when the external screen is already plugged in, then gnome boots in fallback mode... with other words: Gnome3 seems to be able to run the graphic+screen with gnome 3, but the "fallback" detection seems not to beleive so...

Just downloaded f10 last night. Install goes fine, but when I boot it goes to root command line. I enter in startx and recieve and error.

I know there's a way to do this, I've seen them in countless installation how-tos, but for the life of me I can't seem to make it work.On my personal machine I have win xp pro & fedora 11-kde dual booted on my #1 320gb hdd.I have win 7 enterprise on the #2 320gb hdd. I am a networking student and am currently taking Linux Admin I, class.For a class project on IT, I am trying to put together a ppt of how I accomplished setting up my machine and having slides of the grub loader screen,he win 7 boot loader screen would be a nice addition. But I can not get it to work. Have tried using the shift & prt scr keys to make a copy & then pasting it into a text editor on linux or wordpad in windows, but it doesn't take

On a galactic scale, I have a very, very minuscule problem, but it is irksome nonetheless. I have a machine running Fedora 12. I have two monitors attached--both 19" flat panels at 1280 x 1024 each. At some point I created a desktop background image that was 2560 x 1024. I guess I'm sort of used to Mac OS X where one can set separate images on each screen (so I'm used to having a right image and a left image).
Anyway, I set the image as my desktop background, and it spanned both screens as expected. I can't tell you for the life of me what setting I had it on (scaled, tiled, etc.). But for some reason, after running a set of updates, my image no longer spans both screens. Instead it is cropped from 2560 x 1024 to 1280 x 1024 and appears the same on BOTH screens. I've tried all five settings in the "Appearance" panel (gnome-appearance-properties). "Scaled" has the image shrunk down to 1280 x 512, and appears on both screens, with bars above and below it.
"Tiled," "Zoom," and "Centered" all have the image as explained earlier--cropped to 1280 x 1024 and appearing the same on both screens."Fill Screen" smushes the image so that it is half as wide but every bit as tall, and displays that on both monitors. Again, I realize this is silly to be considered a "problem," but it USED to appear normally and now I can't get it to anymore. Anyone else experience this or know what the deal is?

I have a PC installed with FC 14:AMD 9500 Quad Core4GB RAM2x ATI X1950I've been using FC14 for a few weeks after updating from FC13.The graphics driver was a default one, it worked but it would only recognise one of my screen cards and I wanted to install the ATI Catalyst software so I began the process of installing the proper drivers.I followed the howto at: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=155503 Once I'd finished the driver seemed to be sort of working but everything was going really slow. If I moved a window it'd take a while to redraw in the new position, menus took ages to pop up, and so on.
I tried running aticonfig and got an error message (unfortunately the only record of it is on the machine I can't access properly). I put the message into a search engine and found a bug stating the same message where people had the same problem with Nvidia and intel cards too.The problem was something to do with python and how it started up the drivers (sorry I can't remember the message). The bug had an rpm attached that was a patch to fix this problem (I'm blabbing on in case any of this jogs the memory of someone that had this problem or worked on it).I installed the patch and rebooted and now Fedora gets as far as the black screen where a progress bar fills in white at the bottom of the screen but it stops there. Once the bar is completely white it sits there and gets on further no matter how long I wait.Does anyone know how I can recover this system? Is there a way of getting the system to recreate xorg.conf before this stage and load using the default driver again? The point it's hanging at is the point where it would normally bring up the graphical progress bar then the login screen.

I've been trying to install Fedora 10 Core to a new my machine. The live CD appears to boot, but once I get beyond the selection stage (installing or running Fedora from the disk first), I invariably get a fully white screen. Nothing I've tried to do changes this. Although I'm reasonably experienced with the command line, I've never tried to do a GUI-less install of a full OS, and am unsure how/if to begin with Fedora. Any suggestions for either fixing the white screen of death, and/or installing from the command line would be a big help.

I wanted to try F10 today so I downloaded the Fedora 10 64 Bit LiveCD but for some reason after it's done loading (the three colored loading bar), it hangs on a white screen with no sign of my computer thinking (no HDD LED activity and no CD ROM activity indicators flashing). Any clue how I could test the LiveCD without having to install Fedora (with text or otherwise..)? For the record, I have a 4870 1GB graphics card. I'm assuming that's fully supported, right?

I'm on a Dell notebook with Radeon Xpress 200M just upgraded from F11 to F12 and began to have white screen issues, immediately. At the beginning of boot screen went to white, hard drive activity but no control. Upon several retries and hooking up an external VGA, I managed to get display on both the external and LCD, i think in twin mode -- I then disconnected the VGA, and the LCD was OK ... until the next reboot: the LCD started going to white screen just before the GUI login, while the VGA remained viewable. Then, for no apparent reason, it would now and then go to white at the very beginning of the boot, then, again, just before the login. Also, looking at the external, it appeared that the system was thinking it had two displays working in extended desktop mode (cursor and windows would spill over to the left of the VGA screen)
"xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1280x800" caused both displays to go black momentarily, then each would come back to the state it was in -- VGA to viewable display, and the LVDS to white screen. Subsequent xrandr didn't appear to trigger anything.
tried "system-config-display", to no avail. Removing the "xorg.conf" doesn't help. Tried several reboots, including into text mode, nothing worked (it's bewildering that it worked the first time an external was hooked up, but not many subsequent times)Hooked up a different external, played around with settings, then another xrandr command did finally bring back the LVDS ! (whether the LVDS is a white screen or is working, xrandr reports it is connected.) I apologize for posting this question without exhausting all possible combinations and scenarios -- i've already lost three hours this morning (and troubleshooting with rebooting ultimately leads to forced file-system checks (long waits) for those of us with ext3 still). It is reasonable to predict that although the LVDS is working at the moment, the problem is not fixed, since it worked and then stopped working before.
Also, nothing like this ever happened with this machine before -- F9 through F11 (also, Windows Vista has normal display)

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 and 4GB RAM. The MoBo does not have embedded video. My main video card is a Diamond Radeon HD3650 PCIe. I was unable to initially install F 10 as the screen would blank out (Black Screen) after it would start Anaconda. I attempted to boot using the suggested option of nomodeset with no change of symptoms. I then switched out to an older PCI video card (NVIDIA GeForce FX5200) and was able to go through the install. Now I am attempting to switch back to my preferred card (HD3650) and just before the GDM screen appears the screen goes to solid white and no ability to switch to another VT. I have been unsuccessful at finding any workarounds for this. I thought the issues were with the older proprietary chipsets pre open source of ATI which was supposedly older than the R500 series, but I guess I'm wrong.

complete trying newbie trying to get to grips with linux. Tried ubuntu and didnt like that so someone suggested fedora. I'm having the same problem I had with ubuntu, I get a white screen when trying to load the graphical install after the media test. On ubuntu this was solved by selecting simple graphics mode. Here I have tried the following commands during install with still no luck
The text install just freezes after selecting the keyboard layout so that does not even work. Tried searching for forums but only solutions I could find where the previous.
