Fedora :: 13 - Use The New /etc/sysconfig/init - Agetty Doesn't Work Any More?

Aug 19, 2010

What a nuisance after upgrading from Fedora 12 to Fedora 13 the terminal initialisation and the running of agetty agetty doesn't work any more. Same for printer configurations. Apparently this should now be done in /etc/sysconfig/init but where is the documentation? how to use the new /etc/sysconfig/init to do what the event.d scripts used to do.

Fedora :: Missing /etc/sysconfig/network File And Eth0 And Wlan0 Files?

Oct 31, 2010

I just installed Fedora 13 on a new Dell XPS desktop and some of the networking files are not created/missing. The computer has Broadcom Gigabit wired card and Asus PCE-N13 wireless card. When I type lspci, I see that Network conroller: RaLink RT2860 and Ethernet controller: Broadcom BCM57780 Gigabit Ethernet. So, somehow they are being detected by the OS, but I am not sure if the drivers are installed or why some of the network files are missng.

Debian Configuration :: Support For Single Case Tty Broken In Agetty?

Feb 12, 2016

I'm restoring an old TI Silent 700 terminal [URL] ... and have connected it to an RPi running the debian based Jessie release using a serial converter. After learning more than I wanted to about serial settings and support I now have it interfaced and communicating bidirectionally but have one last hurdle - proper support for a single case (uppercase only) terminal in agetty.

With the -U flag on it seems like the the login name is detected as needing conversion because lowercase login names work - but lower case passwords do not and once I get a bash prompt all input comes in as upper case. So the -U agetty flag only seems to apply to login name and is then forgotten (not passed on to login process or bash?) and various settings in stty like iuclc, xcase, iexten don't seem to work.

I'd really like to get this terminal working with native support but I'll also take a kludge of some kind (I've tried a tr pipe for example).

Here is what I think is the relevant portion of my systemd generator:

Code: Select all[Service]
ExecStart=-/sbin/agetty -U 300 %I $TERM
Type=idle
Restart=always
UtmpIdentifier=%I
TTYPath=/dev/%I

General :: Shutdown Works And Init 0 Doesn't So How Are They Different

Jul 7, 2011

When I bring down a certain machine with some nfs mounts using init 0, it hangs forever while trying to bring down the mounts, but if I bring it down using halt -p (which I've read just calls shutdown if I'm in init 3), it comes down in a timely manner. I've also read that shutdown still calls all the rc.d kill scripts just like init 0, so what is actually the difference between them? Is it this:

Quote:

All processes are first notified that the system is going down by the signal SIGTERM?Does init not do that? I'm not trying to directly troubleshoot why NFS makes me hang with init 0 at this point, just wondering why shutdown works whereas init 0 doesn't.

Ubuntu :: Target Filesystem Doesn't Have /sbin/init

Oct 11, 2010

I've recently installed 10.10 onto my laptop, a Toshiba Equium A-100. It's been working perfectly for the last few weeks, but today I woke up, booted and got this;

Code:

mount: mounting dev/disk/by-uuid/9f8e1fd1-ca75-4eeb-8afc-a6b7bd756180 on /root
failed: Invalid argument
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory

[code]....

I'm a bit of a linux newbie, and while I can use the system fine, once we get into a shell I'm out of my depth. My laptop is useless now, and, unluckily, my 2000 word end-of-semester submission is on it. No, I didn't back it up because I wrote it last night. Arrgh.

Ubuntu :: Target Filesystem Doesn't Have /sbin/init. And More?

Nov 15, 2010

I hope that you will be able to help me. I know that my topic may seem the same as some other threads, but there is a twist and it seems that I can't sort things out. I installed Ubuntu on the family's 4 year old Dell about a year ago when Windows stopped working (too many bluescreens!). It seed to be good, until one day when I tried to boot and it listed some codes on a black screen. I then reinstalled ubuntu from one of my disks, and it worked fine... until the entire thing occurred again a week later. This happened once or twice more, until today's problem:

It won't boot into ubuntu and also has white writing on the black background (read this below). I tried to reinstall from a ubuntu install disk, burned additional install disks, made an install usb, and also tried opensuse. They all say the below message when I try to boot into the disk:

Killed

mount: mounting on /sys on root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting on /proc on root/proc failed: No such file or directory

Ubuntu Installation :: Target Filesystem Doesn't Have /sbin/init?

Jun 22, 2011

I can't get Ubuntu to boot. The computer isn't actually mine so I don't know exactly what happened, but I think an update went badly wrong...

Anyway, whenever I try and boot Ubuntu, i get this

Code:
Killed
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init
No init found. Try passing init= bootarg

(and then something about initramfs) I've been trying to find out what the error is on the forums, and I think it could be to do with grub not being able to find something, but I really don't know because I don't understand exactly what's going on.

I can load the grub menu, but I can't boot Ubuntu from there. Also, I can't run or install Ubuntu on a live usb because it just hangs at the Ubuntu loading screen.

General :: Kill XServer (Init 3 / 5 Does Not Work)

Feb 23, 2011

I'm running Linux Mint 10, although I've had this same issue with other variants of Linux. I've been told/found while researching that if the X server hangs or otherwise errors, one can drop to a root prompt, usually at another tty, and execute init 3 (to drop to single user mode) and then init 5 to return to the default, graphical session. Needless to say, I've tried this before in multiple configurations on multiple machines to no avail.

The only feedback I receive form executing those two commands is a listing of VMWare services (from a kernel module) that are stopped and then restarted. If I run startx (either before or after init 3), then I am told that the xserver is still running and that I should remove /tmp/.X0-lock. Having tried that, it removes that error message, but claims that the xserver cannot be attached as another instance is running. How do I kill the xserver completely? Can I killall some process name?

General :: Can't Get Mount To Work In /etc/init.d/rc.local Or Fstab

Jul 10, 2010

I'm running XBMC media center which is built on Ubuntu and I'm trying to mount a network share, but I can't seem to automate it. If I manually run:

Code:

mount -t cifs -o file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 //192.168.1.20/disk7/xbmc_thumbs/Thumbnails /home/kevin/.xbmc/userdata/Thumbnails

The mount is created and everything works fine. But obviously the mount eill be lost on the next boot. A few months back, when I was running a previous version of XBMC and first instructed on how to do this, I was told to put that command in /etc/init.d/rc.local so the mount would automatically be created at boot. I did and it worked. The other day I upgraded to a new XBMC build (which is built on the newer Lucid Ubuntu) and while the same command creates the mount, putting it in /etc/init.d/rc.local does not create it on boot. Someone suggested the fstab was the better place to create the mount. So I inserted the following in /etc/fstab:

Code:

//192.168.1.20/disk7/XBMC_thumbs/Thumbnails /home/kevin/.xbmc/userdata/Thumbnails cifs file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

That doesn't work either. What am I doing wrong and how can I get this mount auto-created on boot?

Fedora Networking :: Samsung N130 Realtek 8192 Doesn't Work In Fedora 12

Apr 2, 2010

I have a Samsung N130 with a Realtek 8192 wifi card (possibly 8192e, I'm not sure) and I am trying to run Fedora 12 on it. I used to run Ubuntu until trying their latest beta and realizing it's not very good, so I looked for something else. Ubuntu was at least easy to get the wifi working with just a few quick commands that were written out, word for word, in order, on the Ubuntu forums. I tried openSUSE on here and it didn't have wifi working out of the box either but people on their forums refused to give me actual instructions and just kept bumping me from thread to thread with people giving vague advice or else just telling me I was looking in the wrong place. I'm hoping that someone can give me clear and detailed instructions on how to get this wifi card working. Keep in mind that I am coming from Ubuntu and so I'm not super comfortable in CLI, if I need to do some CL stuff I will need clear and detailed instructions on how to do that.

Fedora Installation :: Software Update - Fedora (2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64) - Nvidia Driver Doesn't Work

Sep 1, 2010

Fedora (2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64) I installed that update, during the installation process it said that it had to remove three packages, one of them was kmod nvidia for the old kernel (Fedora (2.6.33.8-149.fc13.x86_64))After the update finished installing the new kernel, I restarted the system and Nvidia did not load. (I assume because Update manager removed the old nvidia? But I also assumed that a new version would be installed automatically?)I received the following Boot messages:

Code:

Entering non-interactive startup
Starting monitoring for VG vg_user1: 3 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg_user1" monitored

[code]....

I'm confused, if Update Manager removed kmod nvidia, then why does yum say it is installed? And why doesn't the new kernel update work with that version? Or should I install a driver version for that particular kernel? I've read while searching that I need to install a kmod-nvidia for that particual kernel version and that I should login to my previous kernel until that happens, is that the problem I'm having?

Why don't rpmfusion and fedoraproject release the kmod-nvidia and kernel updates at the same time to avoid problems such as this? Does anyone know how long does it usually take for rpmfusion to release the new kmod-nvidia driver for the latest kernel?
