Debian :: Using A T.v. As A Monitor

I installed debian using a computer monitor so the installer set the default resolution for that monitor. I, however want to use a t.v. set as a monitor but it will not display properly.
hardware specifics:
computer: Pentium II 300MHz proc.
384MB RAM
5 gig HD
GeForce FX 5200 128MB video card
I am connecting the computer to the T.V. using a 4 pin S-video cable. The T.V. set displays the initial loading process correctly but then starts flashing colors whenever the computer reaches the graphical login prompt.
solutions I have tried: I have tried changed the resolution and refresh rate to the lowest setting(640X480@60hz) using GNOME but this does not change the resolution of of the login prompt. I have even tried connecting the computer to an HDTV capable of 1080i with the same results.
My question is how can I change the resolution of the login window to see if that is causing the problem or if all I need is a specific driver or if there is something else I am missing.

I recently installed Debian, using the amd64 Network Install .iso. I'm using XFCE4 as my desktop environment, and everything is working well... on my laptop's screen.
My desired setup is to have my laptop sitting on a well-ventilated shelf, closed, and to have an external monitor be my main monitor. I want this because I'm using my laptop as my "home" computer, so it never moves, and I don't like the keyboard/trackpad. My laptop has a VGA output, and I can get my desired setup on my Windows partition (not stating a preference ; just that the hardware CAN do what I want it to).
I've been working my way around the Internet for a few days, now, and I've got the commercial NVIDIA driver installed. If I run sudo nvidia-config --twinview I can get my external monitor to be part of the display, which is great, but it's part of a dual-screen monitor setup, which is not what I want at all, because (a) XFCE's multiple virtual desktops are good enough for me and (b) my graphics card is integrated, and I'm trying to squeeze every drop of performance out of my laptop that I can (1 gig of RAM; the less that my graphics card eats into it, the better). Plus, it'd be annoying to accidentally drop something on my laptop's screen, and then have to dig it out of the shelf in order to undo it. I'm not saying that I'm consistently clumsy, but I'd eventually end up doing it.

Just got a pretty fresh install of Debian/XFCE. Both monitors work out of the box on my 8400GS. I was unable to find an option to change it so I can span is as 1 work space instead of having them mirrored.

I install the debian on my PC, but the monitor is not detected or not adapted ( while it is for linux CD live, and windows XP). it gives the following errors :
I want to use the file xorg.conf given by CDlive ( sidux for example) and copy it in the /etc/X11 of my debian, is it enougn or I need ohter configuration ?

Today I set up the energy settings like that:
10 minutes (screen), 20 minutes for suspension.
After around 30 minutes, I came back and switched back on the pc.
The primary monitor (VGA) was not detected, even after a system reboot.
More info about my pc:
Debian stable 8.2, kernel 3.16.0-4-686-pae.
I have an Nvidia card, but currently I am using nouveau drivers.
Two monitors: VGA (primary) and DVI (secondary).
Later I could get my primary monitor to work by switching tty (ctrl+alt+f3 and typing "startx" in the console).
I guess this is related to Xorg configuration (/etc/X11/xorg.conf is empty), but I am not really sure.

I just installed Debian and I find it very difficult to read the text in the GUI windows. I cannot explain it well--which is one of the reason I probably cannot find the answer.But, it looks like some of the text was printed (it these were printed pages) from a printer that is running out of toner. If I switch to the ctrl-alt-F2 terminal then the text is easy to read. I have installed on other partitions Ubuntu and Windows in both of these operating systems everything looks fine

I'm a newcomer to Linux and so I apologize in advance for my question (that may be a newbie's question indeed).I've just changed my system from Lenny and installed the newest version of Squeeze ( X.Org X Server 1.7.7, Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.37-trunk-amd64 x86_64 Debian).When adding a second monitor (smaller with different specs) I get the same resolution on both screens--that of the smaller one.

i just did a graphic install of debian lenny and when i finished the installation and restarted the computer the grub boot menu appeared and i selected debian and nothing happened the monitor just displayed a message saying "out of range" i have a dell studio xps 1800is it my graphics card (it shouldn't be) how do i start x server in a different resolution (if screen resolution is the problem

I need something to monitor and record the activity of the top 5 processes in terms of CPU usage and load average during a specific timespan. I'm having some spikes in the morning and just realized it's not always at the same time so it's hard to get up and watch the processes with top. I need something that records CPU usage and load average of the processes from 4AM to 9AM (for instance) so I can debug the process that it's consuming my CPU and spitting +80 e-mails with monit each day.

I noticed that Debian 8 has a significant bug related to detecting presence of display(s). Today, I woke my computer from sleep while the LCD monitor was unplugged from power (the monitor is connected via DVI) then I powered the monitor but nothing was displayed. Next, I connected another monitor via HDMI and both screens started working. However after disconnecting HDMI cable from the second monitor the first one with DVI stopped showing anything. The conclusion of this situation is that HDMI monitor must be connected all the time.
I thought that this is caused by graphics driver, but I experienced the problem on different machines, one with nvidia driver and DVI, and the second with default free driver and DisplayPort.
I just checked that this is related to KDE. After switching to console using ctrl+alt+f1 the screen turns on, but when I am going back via ctrl+alt+f7 the screen disappears.

I just upgraded from a 1280x1024 17" to a 1920x1200 24".However, at 1920x1200, I do not have an option to change the refresh rate to anything but 60Hz, but Id like to run 70 or 75Hz.My monitor is an Asus PA246Q. Digital Signal Frequency : 30~83 KHz(H)/ 50~76 Hz(V).I am running Debian 6.Video card is an ATI Radeon 4850/1GB, and I am using the fglrx driver.

My last Linux install was SUSE 6 on an early ISA based Pentium clone. I'm used to Unix / bash from OS X, MinGW, QNX & BeOS... none of these rely heavily on X. But I'm thinking that Linux is so popular, I'm doing a lot of my Windows stuff under MinGW, why not just stick Linux on and be done with it.So I've polled the various distros, I'm a power-user / dev so Ubuntu doesn't seem like me, and I'm not familiar enough with Linux to go Gentoo just yet, but the way I slim Windows and OS X installs down to just what I need. I love apt-get and like FreeBSD installs I've seen, but want some Linux kernel goodness for my self, so I have chosen Debian.
I grabbed the amd64 build of lenny DVD 1, partitioned up and installed a bare system that I can apt-get the bits I want later.Here's the problem... When the install completes rebooting sends the graphical login to a frequency my old Hanns-G TFT can't handle.I can Ctrl-Alt-F1 back to the terminal or boot in single user mode, and everything seems to be good until you go GUI.Here's what I've tried.
I've renamed /etc/X11/xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.oldI ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorgI've reinstalled using both simple GUI and Expert GUI using both kernelsI've tried adding nvidia-* packages with apt-get and aptitudeI remember there used to be a frequency tuner app for SUSE 6 and XFree86, but it seems that sort of thing is depreciated in modern Linux.Info? My GFX card is an nvidia GT 220, the motherboard is an ASUS P5QL Pro, the Monitor (Hanns-G) is attached via RGB HD-15 D-Sub (sadly that's all I have access to right now) and it's native resolution is 1280x1024 4:3 @ 60Hz, but in heXPee it will sync at that resolution at 60, 70, 72 or 75Hz, though it does get fuzzy at 75Hz.I'm fairly certain that X is working, just not at a frequency my screen can display... how can I fix this from single user, or regular bash terminal?
---edit--- Forgot to mention I ran dpkg-reconfigure on the XServer. :s It didn't offer video drivers, only to change from gb 105 keyboard layout and ps/2 mouse. I set the META key to the logo key while I was there, but it wasn't really helpful in any other way.

I can't get debian 5.0.4 i386 to load I can get as far as root for crash repair during boot-up but much further than that and my monitor turns off. Ubuntu 8.04.4 live cd (kernel is 2.6.24 i believe) works but says I have to enter noapic in the boot string. APIC is on and greyed out i.e. not accessible in BIOS --- might be non-compliant Only thing I can think of is to add acpi=off in GRUB entry but the change doesn't seem to work or take effect. I added it to the relevant entries in menu.lst in grub and it still didn't take effect. Grub must be getting its config info somewhere else...

I have found munin and sysstat, Does munin use systat? or they are different package?because in some documents I have found on net,for installing munin, systat is needed !!for example on RedHat based distor, sysstat package is needed! but on debian is not needed!

I've got Lenny installed with the desktop environment included. Remote desktop has been activated and I can see Lenny's desktop on a second computer using VNC. When I disconnect the monitor from the first PC which is running on Lenny and start that one up it won't boot all the way and I cannot connect through VNC (connection refused).
Etch has no problem with that. When I connect a monitor to the stalling Lenny I read: Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?
What can I do to establish a full boot on Lenny so I can use VNC the way Etch (and other distros) allows me to? This has something to do with the autodetect system, I suppose. Could I tell X Server to ignore the fact no monitor is connected or could I fool X Server into believing there is a monitor?

How could xorg be set-up such that different monitors work with different DPI but still compose the same extended display?
I have a 15 inch laptop display extending to the right the main display which is 23 inch. The resolutions are comparable, but the difference in pixel size is very large. Thus, either the external display has too large fonts and UI, or the laptop one has them very small. Moving them at different distances is not entirely possible.

VGA1 connected 2048x1152+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 510mm x 287mm
I heard that Windows has a hack (which I can't check) for extending displays with different pixels sizes: it computes in which of the displays a window has most of it's surface and sets the DPI for that window based on that. Thus a window will change DPI when crossing monitors, (and will look too small/large on one of the monitors if it is in the middle).

I'm trying to set up a dual monitor system with my Dell E7450 laptop with Debian Stretch and KDE 4.14.2. The graphic card is a Intel HD5500 with xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.99.917-2. The first time I simply connected the HDMI plug, it recognized the monitor and it automagically set up the extended dual monitor. Then I unplugged the HDMI and KDE froze. Now every time I plug in the second monitor the laptop monitor goes black, the desktop goes on the external monitor and the mouse cursor moves only vertically along the leftmost edge of the monitor.

The G4 has two cards with me only using one.Booting into Linux single then running Xorg -configure gives me the output on both monitors from both cards.Rebooting after this setup the mouse does not work. A hard reboot and a phigh reset the display previous defaults.Do I need to edit the xorg.conf.new or the xorg.conf?

I just installed Jessie in a new Toshiba Satellite C75D-B7260.

I have a fresh installation of Debian 7.8 on my Dell Precision notebook. Somehow I failed to configure Xorg in a proper way. I do have X up and running, but I can not change my monitor resolution. Here is my graphics card.

Setup:
I'm using i386 Jessie Debian, have an i7 Intel processor and Gtx 745 4gb NVidia GPU.
I am running with nomodeset due to blurring issue but issue occured without nomodeset too.
Problem:
When I start Debian with just a monitor in the HDMI slot it doesn't recognize the monitor and keeps the monitor at 1024x768.
When I start Debian with monitor in both DVI and HDMI slot it only activates the DVI monitor (with proper resolution). PC has no VGA I have no DP cable.

My system can't seem to detect the external monitor that I've plugged into my laptop using and HDMI cable. The monitor works when I'm booted into Windows so I know that it isn't a problem with the monitor or the cable.
When I run xrandr I get.

My monitor (Dell U2412M) has a VGA port, a display port and a DVI port. I can connect it to my laptop with VGA, no problem, but I'd rather use one of the other ports. I have a HDMI-to-DVI cable, so I tried that. That didn't work with my laptop, so I tested this HDMI-to-DVI cable with my raspberry pi, and that works perfectly. So, the problem is probably not the cable and not the DVI port on the monitor.
What happens when I plug the HDMI-to-DVI cable into my laptop is a bit weird. It's not a blank screen or anything, but part of the messages I see during boot. The last lines on the screen (the others relate to stuff that is probably not relevant for this issue), are these:

Debian Jessie does not detect one of my monitors (I have two) when I use the default drivers (nouveau) for my NVIDIA graphics card. It does work when I install the proprietary drivers, but then, after a couple of reboots, I get many problems (when I log in, it does not manage to load the desktop environment). I've tried this a couple of times unsuccessfully.
How to make the machine recognize the dual screen with the default drivers?

I am new to Debian and Linux all together. At work, we have dual even triple minitors at our stations. I have not seen this on linux until I went to a co-workers house. I wanted to do the same and I have two monitors. I asked how but he uses X on Gentoo.How can I go about learning how to do this? I can tell you now, I DO NOT know how to get the monitor information on the system. I DO NOT know where to find the configuration files for my monitor.
I know I am going to need drivers and stuff. What I asking I guess is where I should start in order to get this going. I am running Debian (lenny) 4 GIGS ram, 1.5TB HDD and a Dual core processor. I know the video card I have is a dual head video card for two monitors. I would like to thank everyone in advanced for their and hopefully I can learn something new and be able to do this on my own in the future.

I am using my laptop, hp compaq6710b with an external screen connected to that with the extended desktop options, which really increases the efficiency for programming and reading documents and doing changes.
I was wondering how to connect a 2nd external monitor to the laptop. Laptop has one VGA output apparently which is connected to the external monitor for the moment. I saw that there are some converters from usb to DVI-D or VGA. I guess these connectors can make the conversion I am looking for. Anybody used these connectors with debian to get an extended desktop on 3 screens(2 external monitors + laptop screen).

i got an AOC 18" lcd, the instructions that came with it, are only for Windows and Macs, if i press a button at the base of it, a square appears with all the pictures to configure including brightness, but i can't click on the screen. The cd that came with the monitor, i assume only works with Windows/Mac, i haven't inserted it for fear of screwing up.
PS: when i pass the mouse over the square, the pointer disappears.
