Debian Configuration :: Limiting Resource Usage

Sep 10, 2015

Got a few more questions from the Debian Security Howto.

Section "4.11.2 Limiting resource usage: the limits.conf file" page 44

Code: Select allnano /etc/security/limits.conf

At the bottom I get...

Code: Select all#<domain>      <type>  <item>         <value>
#
#*               soft    core            0
#root            hard    core            100000
#*               hard    rss             10000

[code]...

Do I have to uncomment these lines for them to take effect?

OpenSUSE :: Sticky Resource Monitor In KDE?

Aug 7, 2010

Does anyone else have a resource monitor appearing on their KDE desktop? My is in the upper-right corner, and lies on top of all other windows. I can work with windows beneath it alright, but it is always showing.

The resource monitor is always translucent, and appears to have some sort of vertical "thermometer"-style usage scale on its left side. Beside that are two scrolling graphs. The only text/label appears to be a percentage that matches the thermometer bar, but there is nothing to tell me what resources are being monitored. Regardless, I use other resource monitoring software and I do not want this one on my desktop.

Debian Configuration :: Lenny Won't Boot All The Way Without Monitor

Apr 16, 2010

I've got Lenny installed with the desktop environment included. Remote desktop has been activated and I can see Lenny's desktop on a second computer using VNC. When I disconnect the monitor from the first PC which is running on Lenny and start that one up it won't boot all the way and I cannot connect through VNC (connection refused).

Etch has no problem with that. When I connect a monitor to the stalling Lenny I read: Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?

What can I do to establish a full boot on Lenny so I can use VNC the way Etch (and other distros) allows me to? This has something to do with the autodetect system, I suppose. Could I tell X Server to ignore the fact no monitor is connected or could I fool X Server into believing there is a monitor?

Debian Configuration :: No Boot Without Attached Monitor Kernel 2.6.32-5-686

Jul 10, 2011

since upgrading the squeeze kernel from 2.6.26-2-686 to 2.6.32-5-686 I´ve been unable to boot my HP D510S/845G without attached monitor. As this computer serves as router and print/faxserver, there is/was neither a monitor nor a keyboard/mouse attached. With monitor everything works fine, without monitor the computer hangs somewhere. Unfortunately it hangs without logging anything in /var/log.

Reinstalling xorg and xserver-xorg didn´t change anything, neither was the new xorg.conf from dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg of any use. (After booting with attached monitor I disconnected the monitor and ran dpkg-reconfigure) Maybe disabling Xorg would solve the problem, but I want to be able to log in via vnc and use a GUI - for example to configure mythtv. Up to the kernel-update everything was working fine, so I think some changes to the new kernel are responsible. how to fix it or how to start logging earlier in the boot process?

Debian Configuration :: Copying Video Setup From Ubuntu - External Monitor

Oct 15, 2015

My laptop has a dual boot Debian + Ubuntu installation.

In particular I am using Debian 8.0 with stock kernel 3.16.0-4 (or equally 4.1.10 custom compiled, I tested it and it does not make any difference for the subject of this post).

Ubuntu is 14.10, with stock kernel 3.19.0-15.

In both installations I have nvidia nouveau drivers and intel integrated graphics drivers installed and loaded. This is the default for both installations.

In both installations I have xorg automatically configured (no xorg.conf file present in /etc/X11). In both systems the content of /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d is the same for what moitors are concerned (differences in mice and trackpad entries).

Unfortunately, the video configuration in Ubuntu 14.10 works out of the box. In particular I can plug in an external monitor/projector and it will fire-up the nvidia card (nouveau drivers) to power that monitor.

Debian 8.0 on the other hand does not even detect the external monitor.

I don't know where to start to solve the problems.

The hardware is as follows: the laptop (lenovo W530) features both an Intel integrated graphics card and an Nvidia K1000M. The VGA port is connected only to the Nvidia card (this is according to my online research, as I don't know how to check this).

Debian Configuration :: Reboot Both The Server And The Client Machines Every Time Change The SAMBA Configuration?

Apr 5, 2010

I am *finally* getting around to rebuilding my file-sharing computer. I'll be sharing files with both Linux and Windoze machines. It's a home network, so there's nothing fancy needed. I know I have to tweak my smb.conf file until I'm satisfied with the features and security. I'm using SWAT and I'm starting with a bare-bones conf file. It's not secure but I can see the server and selected files/directories from my other Linux box.

My really dumb question is, do I have to reboot both the server and the client machines every time I change the SAMBA configuration? I thought I just had to stop and restart the SAMBA service in the SWAT software - but then the server disappears from my client. It looks like I need to reboot both machines for the client to see the server.

Debian Configuration :: Install A Multi-core System And Configure It To Run Several VMs, One Each For A Firewall, A Caching Proxy Server, A Mail Server, A Web Server?

Jan 25, 2011

I will be relocating to a permanent residence sometime in the next year or two. I've recently begun thinking about the best way to implement a home-based network. It occurred to me that the most elegant solution might be the use of VM technology to eliminate as much hardware and wiring as possible.My thinking is this: Install a multi-core system and configure it to run several VMs, one each for a firewall, a caching proxy server, a mail server, a web server. Additionally, I would like to run 2-4 VMs as remote (RDP)workstations, using diskless workstations to boot the VMs over powerline ethernet.The latest powerline technology (available later this year) will allow multiple devices on a residential circuit operating at near gigabit speed, just like legacy wired networks.

In theory, the above would allow me to consolidate everything but the disklessworkstations on a single server and eliminate all wired (and wireless) connections except the broadband connection to the Internet and the cabling to the nearest power outlets. It appears technically possible, but I'm not sure about the various virtual connections among VMs. In theory, each VM should be able to communicate with the other as if it was on the same network via the server data bus, but what about setting up firewall zones? Any internal I/O bandwidth bottlenecks? Any other potential "gotchas", caveats, issues? (Other than the obvious requirement of having enough CPU and RAM).Any thoughts or observations welcome, especially if they are from real world experience in a VM environment. BTW--in case you're wondering why I'm posting here, it's because I run Debian on all my workstations/servers (running VirtualBox as a VM for Windows XP on one workstation).

Debian Configuration :: Keeping The Dns Server Running With Current Server Information?

I'm running the current release of Debian with the 2.6.26-2 kernel. This is an upgrade from an older (2.4 kernel) series redhat release. One of the things I had working in the older system was a dns server with accompanying monthly update of the root hints file. I tried working through a dns how-to to set this up again, but it seems much has moved around since I last played with this. All of the files listed in the how-to are not where it says they should be. I am looking for a better reference on keeping the dns server running with current server information.

Debian Multimedia :: Alsa Just Returns With Device Or Resource Busy

Mar 31, 2015

Using debian testing.

Pulseaudio got installed by default here during installtion. Since I don't want it I first ran "systemctl disable pulseaudio", "pulseaudio --kill", then without rebooting I use mpd with alsa alone and it worked fine.

But then i rebooted, and now all applications, mpd, mpv, chromium etc just says that alsa returns with "Device or resource busy", tried rebooting again with no effect.

The soundcard appears as card 1 according to the output of "aplay -l", and defined that card 1is suposed to be default with this in "/etc/asound.conf":

Code: Select allpcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 1
}

ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 1
}

It occurred to me that there might be an issue with permissions to the soundcard so I ran "ls -l /dev/snd"

Code: Select alldrwxr-xr-x  2 root root       80 Mar 31 03:27 by-path
crw-rw----+ 1 root audio 116,  8 Mar 31 03:27 controlC0

crw-rw----+ 1 root audio 116,  7 Mar 31 03:27 hwC1D0

My user is a part of the audio group:

Debian Configuration :: DHCP Server With External Dns Name Server

Jun 14, 2011

I wanted to setup my server as a router/gateway just for educational purposes and also when it succeeded i will keep the gateway and place it on the front line right after my modem.

My current setup as it is now :

The GATEWAY/ROUTER will be doing the main work to act as a dhcp server and firewall.

Now my setup as it is now :

So now what i ment to do was :

Let the clients connect to the gateway via ETH1 and all the stuff being router to ETH0 which is the NIC that is connected to the internet.

But now i have two huge problems :

1. The DHCP configuration seems to be fine the client machines get their ip adresses and /etc/resolve.conf looks fine to. But somehow the GATEWAY/ROUTER wont let me use the specified external DNs server so i cant do anything on these machines.

2. The firewall script [url] at line 27 should be DROP but if i use this line of code the GATEWAY/ROUTER cannot use his dns server settings so when i try to browse the internet or ping a machine outside my local network it would came up with nothing.

Debian Hardware :: External Monitor As The Main Monitor For A Laptop

Sep 22, 2010

I recently installed Debian, using the amd64 Network Install .iso. I'm using XFCE4 as my desktop environment, and everything is working well... on my laptop's screen.

My desired setup is to have my laptop sitting on a well-ventilated shelf, closed, and to have an external monitor be my main monitor. I want this because I'm using my laptop as my "home" computer, so it never moves, and I don't like the keyboard/trackpad. My laptop has a VGA output, and I can get my desired setup on my Windows partition (not stating a preference ; just that the hardware CAN do what I want it to).

I've been working my way around the Internet for a few days, now, and I've got the commercial NVIDIA driver installed. If I run sudo nvidia-config --twinview I can get my external monitor to be part of the display, which is great, but it's part of a dual-screen monitor setup, which is not what I want at all, because (a) XFCE's multiple virtual desktops are good enough for me and (b) my graphics card is integrated, and I'm trying to squeeze every drop of performance out of my laptop that I can (1 gig of RAM; the less that my graphics card eats into it, the better). Plus, it'd be annoying to accidentally drop something on my laptop's screen, and then have to dig it out of the shelf in order to undo it. I'm not saying that I'm consistently clumsy, but I'd eventually end up doing it.

Debian Configuration :: Getting NFS Server Working

Jul 20, 2015

Debian Jessie on a raspberry pi 2

I'm trying to get nfs server working at boot up and it isn't starting because it says portmapper isn't running. I've read through a bunch of documentation on this and have gotten to the point that if the documentation tells me to Code: Select all$ apt-get install nfs-kernel-server portmap I usually stop there as it is outdated. I cant find a process doc that utilizes rpcbind. So, here is what I've done on my own:

setup /etc/exports with a proper nfs dir and exportfs it
Code: Select all$ apt-get install nfs-common nfs-kernel-server
$ sysv-rc-conf
---│ nfs-kerne$  [ ]     [X]     [X]     [X]     [X]     [ ]     [ ]     [ ]        │
---│ rpcbind     [ ]     [X]     [X]     [X]     [X]     [ ]     [ ]     [ ]        │
$ service rpcbind start

[Code] ....

The errors however don't seem critical as I'm able to mount the exported directory. OK so it appears to me that nfs server is working. However through a boot, the nfs-kernel-server and the rpcbind services are not starting. The nfs-kernel-server didn't start because rpcbind wasn't running. So I start rpcbind and then nfs-kernel-server and then nfs server works. So what am I missing? Why will rpcbind not start at boot?
