OpenSUSE Wireless :: EEEpc Rt2860sta V2.3 WEP Messing?

Jul 6, 2010

For a long time, on my netbook Asus EEE pc1000 working fine with my wireless (connecting WEP, WPA). Running with kernel 2.6.29 + rta2860sta v2.2 (package downloaded from the software repository , a user repository)

After somes updates (kernel mainly), all stop working. So I recompile the module v2.2 but don't work. I download from the ralink site the last version , recompile and installed , and appear work fine, but I don't know why the opensuse like to be very annoying and the knetworkmanager don't recognize the device. So , again I download a package from a user repository with the version 2.3 , what appear starts working again. Knetworkmanager recognize the device, but isn't cappable to connect in a WEP network. With WPA works fine.

If I disable the device in knetworkmanager and try configure manually , sometimes work. Probably have some sequence of command what I don't figure out what is. To configure WEP network before this problems I always use only the "iwconfig" command. But I try with "iwconfig" and "iwpriv" and don't work. So , afiter trying a lot of sequence, now I got connected to WEP network, but is very weird how they show this connection,

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Not Connecting Winstars-N WS-WNP671N PCI (Ralink RT2860STA)?

Jun 24, 2011

I use Ubuntu 11.04 on a PC clone desktop. With ethernet cable connects automatically, despite compiling wlan0 not connected. Do not know what I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04 over 30 times and still the same. Try to manually connect to the network connection did not work either hidden and also deal with ipv4 address assigned and neither worked.

1 ) Machine Brand and Model (PC/Laptop):
desktop pc, clon.

2)lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS690 Host Bridge
00:02.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS690 PCI to PCI Bridge (PCI Express Graphics Port 0)[code].....

Try setting manually to no avail not know if I did well. Ralink also downloaded from the rt2860sta and then compiled and did not work. Now I went to install Ubuntu 11.04 and change nothing but that which is above is what I have right now in the machine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install On Usb Key: Live Mode Or Harddisk Mode?

Jan 30, 2010

I installed ubuntu 9.10/9.04 on my usb key as live image couple of time. I have trouble when I try to install wine on my usb key. I am wondering what is the difference if I install my ubuntu into my usb key directly? will that be slower compared with live CD mode? I guess live CD mode may use memory as part of harddisk to save temepory files and normal usb linux installation won't do this for me. Is this true?

If so, do I have a choice to point my tmp directory to system memory area?

Debian :: Can't Connect To Wireless Using Live CD

Jul 29, 2011

I am trying out the Debian 6.01 Live Cd but I can't get my wireless to work. This is on an old Dell C610 laptop running Windows XP, the wireless works fine under XP. Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card (on Texas Instruments PCI-1410 cardbus control).

Here's what I have done so far. Booted Live 686. Takes a long time on this old machine but finally loads with no apparent problems. My wireless network is detected- shows up in the list - 2SAT4, along with several others in the area. I click on it, after a bit it finally comes up with the wireless authentication form, I complete this with my WPA key and hit connect. This repeats without connecting.

I then goto edit connections, and make sure the wireless "auto 2SAT4" has "infrastructure" for mode and "automatic" for MTU. It does. I also make sure the Authentication is set to "Open System".

Looking at lsmod I can see that the orinoco module seems to be loaded, I think that is what this wireless card uses.

At terminal I do a "sudo iwconfig" and see that Eth0 has no ESSID or Access Point.
I do the following:

sudo iwconfig eht0 essid 2sat4
sudo iwconfig eth0 key [WPA key number]

I then do a "sudo iwconfig" and see that Eth0 still has no ESSID or Access Point. I then do a "sudo iwlist eth0 scan" and the response is "Interface doesn't support scanning" I then do a "sudo iwlist eht0 wpakeys" and the response is there are four keys available but they are all off.

Debian Configuration :: Using Live LXDE Wireless WDA-1320?

Sep 11, 2011

I do recall being able to at least figure out Debian enough that I got my wireless working (a few years back). Today I popped in a fresh Live LXDE DVD. I can't find that my wireless is recognized, nor can I find any graphical network management utilities. Nothing network related. Perhaps its all in the command line, but I'm not too familiar with it (though I'm not averse to following instructions if I can use that to simply fix this issue).

I did look at documentation first. To the best of my ability anyway. I could not use it to help myself. Once I get internet working, at least I can trouble shoot on the Debian installation itself, which makes the process much easier. Having to switch out to a Windows installation is a pain.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Rt2860sta.ko - Cannot Allocate Memory

Jun 9, 2011

I just switched over to openSUSE about a week ago from Ubuntu and I just purchased an Asus N13 PCI-E wireless network adapter which uses an RALink 2860 chipset. I plugged it in and openSUSE was able to detect it and everything but when I went to go configure it using YaST, it wouldn't be able to scan for networks.

So, I reinstalled my old adapter, downloaded the latest source from RALink and compiled the drivers. When I tried to use insmod on the new .ko that was compiled, I got the "Could not allocate memory" error.

If you need dmsg logs or anything else, I can reinstall the card and get those.

Ubuntu Networking :: RT2860sta No Wifi After Resume From Sleep?

Oct 13, 2010

When my akoya mini E1210 with UNR10.10 resumes after sleep my wifi searches forever and then cuts out. When I do iwconfig the card seems normal for about a minute and then I do iwconfig again it gives gives no id. Reboot and bang, everything perfect. Did make new driver from latest ralink driver, as explained by Sven ,but nu change. Also blacklisted the rt2800 and rt2x00.

Seems that after sleep the wifi card driver is not loaded. Worked like a charm in 9.10 and in 10.4 (upgrade from 9.10). After update to 10.10, it went wrong.

extra: when I do sudo ifconfig ra0 up I get the message "SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not permitted" Also, after hibernation, no luck...

in dmesg found that the mailbox keeps MCU active, and rt2860 could not be initialised.:

Quote:

maarten-laptop kernel: [ 1902.168454] ERROR!!! NICInitializeAdapter failed, Status[=0x00000001]
maarten-laptop kernel: [ 1902.168788] ERROR!!! H2M_MAILBOX still hold by MCU. command fail
maarten-laptop kernel: [ 1902.174003] !!! rt28xx Initialized fail !!!

When Evolution Mail is not used, everything is ok. I know this message is not related to mail, but it helps for a while. After longer period of sleep, same problem again. Firmware problem?

CentOS 5 :: Boot Into Rescue Mode Using Live CD

Oct 16, 2010

I am attempting to work with adding a new hard drive with a default logical volume setup. In order to complete the task, I am instructed to use a live CD to boot the system without mounting the drives using linux rescue. I am using CentOS-5.5-i386-LiveCD-Release2.iso

I have reviewed the centos documentation. When the live CD boots, it starts a count down to an automatic boot. I attempt to invoke the boot options as directed by hitting the tab and adding the words

linux rescue

At the end of the line and hit return to begin the booting process.

Unfortunately, the linux rescue boot option is ignored and the system mounts the hard drive. Additionally, I have checked the boot option several times by hitting the tab a second time and the option is not displayed.

In researching the issue, I inevitably get very similar instructions like:

Quote:The first centos CD or DVD has a rescue mode, just type on the boot screen: linux rescue

Ubuntu Networking :: Rt2860 / Rt2860sta No Longer Works After Upgrade To Natty?

May 16, 2011

I recently upgraded my Zepto laptop to Natty (11.04), and unfortunately the wifi no longer worked. I have a WPA net, and the combination with a Ralink chip seems unfortunate - judging from the number of internet posts. After browsing loads of threads on the 'net I think I have found a solution for 11.04 - it will work out of the box in 11.10 !

1) Add "blacklist rt2800pci" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

I think this makes the wifi stuff work as I can then do "iwlist wlan0 scan" and get reasonable output. But there is no integration with the Network Manager. So I have also done this (again, with inspiration from a few threads):

2) Edit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf - change the "managed=false" under "[ifupdown]" to "managed=true".

You may have to do a "service network-manager restart", restart or similar to get it going. It also seems I can suspend and get a wifi net connection upon wakeup.

Ubuntu :: Login In Classic Mode From Live USB Stick?

Jun 16, 2011

I decided to put a copy of Ubuntu 11.04 on a USB stick. Downloaded the image file and USB installer and built the stick with no problems. I REALLY don't like the new interface, so I went to the login screen tool and changed the login to come up in Classic mode. Trouble is, now when I try to bring the system up I'm presented with a log-in screen that asks for a user name and password. Since I'm using a live image (akin to a live CD) I don't have any user name or password established. Are there defaults that will allow me to log in? Or do I have to recreate the installation and create a user account that will let me log in?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.4 Beta2 Install Failure (Even Live Mode)

Apr 17, 2010

Tried to install 10.4 Beta2 on my testing machine. Boots but then splash screen starts scrolling really fast though I can notice that 5 dots are moving so no hanging. It takes quite a while and then black screen appears (also scrolling) and I cannot read what's there; last line looks like a prompt. Alt-Ctrl-Del reboots the machine. So I cannot even enter Live mode.

This machine is about 7-8 y.o. P4 2.4GHz (i686) on Asus P4S333/c, 2.5GB ram, GeForce3-Ti200, latest bios 2003 but runs any Linux (I tried) and FreeBSD 9-CURRENT perfectly (Even win7 is installable...but runs badly). On newer machine same CD works fine. The machine is AthlonX2 2.3GHz on Asus M3N78-vm, 4GB ram, onboard chip GeForce8200, HDDs, DVD-RW - all SATA (AHCI). What could be wrong with my old machine? Does Ubuntu still support 96xx Nvidia driver?

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Persistent Live USB In Fresh Mode?

Nov 14, 2010

I have a persistent pendrive of Ubuntu: [URL]
It has a file where it saves the configuration of my computer: casper-rw

But if I boot this USB flash drive in another computer I would like to do it in a fresh way, that is, without loading the configuration of my computer (saved in the casper-rw file). For example, in Puppy Linux this can be done easily, just putting pfix=ram in a boot option of syslinux.cfg and selecting this option when booting.

I think this is important because I think that otherwise the Ubuntu (at least in some cases) cannot open if used in a computer different to the one where casper-rw was configured. It happens to me that I cannot run Ubuntu with my pendrive when inserted in a different computer (I think the reason is what I've said).
