View 2 Replies View RelatedI regularly use an online imageboard website, and as such I am constantly uploading images. Being new to the linux OS, I was quite familar with Microsoft Windows file explorer and its adaption with file uploading. However, it would seem that GNOME follows a different method and uses a separate file browser to a file uploader Here is my file browser and the various options available (icon size, icon view, bigger thumbnails):
And here is what I get when I upload files to a website: My question is, is there a workaround or package available to allow changeable icon sizes/thumbnails in the file uploader? The picture preview is good, but really isn't enough for what I require
In the kde realm, with the dolphin file browser, I can open a terminal in whatever folder is in the gui by using the shift and f4 keys. I'd like to be able to accomplish the same in gnome with the nautilus file browser but can't figure out how to do same. So far I have to open a terminal and then cd to the desired folder. Or do I have to use some other file browser and which one?
View 2 Replies View RelatedHow to call Nautilus file browser with root permissions? "sudo nautilus" does not work. Under Ubuntu there is a command:
"gksu nautilus"
but this does not work in CentOS either.
person can set permissions on a .run file to 'execute as program', though this then returns response that the file needs to be run as root.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi will try to keep this post short and to the point. i am currently running debian with kde and i am trying to edit /etc/apt/sources.list. i know that this file needs to be opened as root for the changes to it to be saved, so what im doing (in konsole) is:
concreteabstract@debian:~$: su
Password:
root@debian: /home/concreteabstract# kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list
but that doesn't work, and the message i get is:
No protocol specified
kwrite: cannot connect to X server :0.0
But any changes I make cannot be saved unless I'm in root. I might be doing this wrong, but I cannot log into root or figure out how to open this file as the root user. I'm still somewhat new to Linux, so could someone please give me an idiot-friendly step-by-step of what to do to open, edit, and save this file as a root user?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIf I use the GUI File Manager I ofter get stuck because I need root permissions to write or delete some file or directory. I realize I can drop down to Terminal and do either a sudo or change the permissions of a particular file, but these are several extra steps. Is there a way I can perform root actions on files using File Manager/Browser? Or is there an alternative file manager program I can explore that is more flexible? I am currently using Debian 6.01a installed from the Live CD, Nautilus 2.30.1.

I have Mepis 8.5 and I can access root Dolphin etc. but I cannot get past the ID and pwd panel when I try to use Firefox to see my localhost sites. When I installed, I knew I should not have made using the browser to be password needed, but it was too late so I am stuck with it. As I haven't used it for a while I have fotgotten the user and pwd for this area. How can I find it or negate it so I have access once I put the localhost url in the broswer?
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter a fresh install of Debian I came across an error Im hoping you guys can help me with. Ive searched for the error and it appears there are multiple reasons that could be causing it. To compound the problem, Im at work so I dont have the specific error messages....so I just installed Lenny (standard install, no desktop) using a USB installer and everything went very smooth. On first boot, the system paused while waiting for the root file system. After a minute or two it just errored out complaining it could not find the root file system and put me at a (vmlinuz) prompt? My guess is that I need to go into my bios and change my boot priority.. but again, thats just a guess.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get the "root" user to be included in the list of users that get displayed on the login page.
I found this:[URL]...which seems to indicate that if I add an "Include" line, with the "root" user, that would work. I found the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file, which was empty except for the section header lines, so I added an "Include=root" line, but even after rebooting I just get the regular users, and have to login by typing the "root" username, etc.
So, I was wondering, is there a way to get this to work? P.S. I understand about not wanting to allow root logins, but I need to do this in my situation.
I'm a long time user of Debian, but I'm having trouble with my partitioning process. Here is where I currently stand:
I am installing the latest Wheezy build. I am trying to install debian with an encrypted LVM that spans two hard disks.
My partitioning layout is as:
1. /home
2. /root
3. swap
4. /boot
I then added partitions 1, 2 and 3 to a physical volume group. I then took that physical volume group and added it to a logical volume. Then I encrypted the logical volume, leaving the /boot partition untouched. I was under the assumption that the only partition the system needed free to reach the loading of the LVM is the /boot partition, as it holds the files necessary for booting. But when I attempt to finalize the disk, it gives an error stating, "No root file system detected". That would be an issue as it is currently sitting inside the encrypted LV. Am I wrong in including the root partition in the encrypted LV?
What is the best way of having as little of my file system non-encrypted as possible while still allowing a proper boot?
I have built a kernel with a ramdisk(ramdisk.image.gz) included. Also in the kernel command line I specified root=/dev/ram0. I am trying to use this ramdisk to load a loopback file as the root filesystem off a fat partition. This is /sbin/init from the ramdisk.
#!/bin/sh
mount -n -t msdos /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt
losetup /dev/loop0 /mnt/linux/linuxdsk.img
mount -t ext2 /dev/loop0 /mnt2
[Code]....
The problem is both umount and blockdev report "device is busy". I want to free up this RAM any suggestions?
For my project, it's absolutely necessary to have a read-only root partition system. I have a writable /opt/project partition. But, I also need to start x server. startx This tries to write to some temporary files and fails as / is readonly. Is there any how-to on how to move this temporary files to the writable portions of the file system.

Whenever I start a browser, it asks me to enter my root password because of some pgp keyring issue. I set my password as standard in seahorse, but no change.
The Gnome3 interface sometimes lags very noticeably.
Packagekit constantly blocks my zypper use, and it won't shut down. Not even after I log out and log in again. I tried just removing everything related to packagekit, but that just breaks everything.
Searching for repositories is a pain and there are too many different ones and I never know which one is the latest and how these will be upgraded in the future. Zypper itself is awesome, everything else about package and repo management is not.
I can't uninstall applications properly. I remove them via zypper, and when I do a distro update they get added back in. (gnome games for example)
Whenever I install or search for anything in zypper, I get hundreds of these errors: GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See GConf configuration system for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: The connection is closed)..but it still finds something.
Is there any gedit plugin, which expands folders of file browser side pane and shows currently editing file, while user switches between tabs?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was using the latest stable release of Debian, dual-booted alongside Windows Vista, with the GNOME desktop, installed via netinst, trying to build and install a library that I knew and trusted, when suddenly I couldn't open the Root Terminal. I clicked the link (in Applications->Accessories (I think, whatever the top one is)->Root Terminal), and in the taskbar I saw an item that said "Starting Root Terminal". A few seconds later, that went away, but the terminal still wasn't open. I tried the regular user terminal, to see the same thing happen. Unsure of what was happening, I tried restarting my computer, since that's always the first step you should take in computer problems.
When I restarted, GNOME wouldn't start. The screen would flash a bit for a few seconds, then a dialog box would appear over a background of static that said "The greeter application is crashing. Attempting another one...".t would then go back to the DOS-style kernel, wait a second, and then the same thing would happen. After several of that, I would get a blue screen which said something to the effect of "It has been detected that the desktop environment has crashed six times in the past 30 seconds.
Waiting two minutes before trying again." When it did that, I tried logging in as root to assess the problem. I gave it the correct password, but it said that it was an incorrect login. After several tries (to ensure I didn't mistype the password), I logged in as myself. Same problem. I tried the su command, with the correct password, and it said it couldn't authorise it.
After a lengthy conversation with a friend of mine who was very good with computers, he basically summarised that he had no clue, but that his best guess would be a virus. Upon running the Linux installer, I found the Repair option. Not being particularly familiar with Linux, I used it simply to backup my important files onto a flash drive. I then tried running the Install option, in an attempt to simply write over my existing Linux and make it new again. The installer, however, consistently froze up when trying to start the partitioner, on the "Checking disks..." stage. I figured it was a problem with my partition. In my naivete, I simply used the Windows tools to clear that partition... It destroyed GRUB too, so I couldn't run any OS. I figured my computer was pretty well screwed, and at that point just decided to bring it into the shop and have them completely wipe it.
my computer was backed up onto an external hard driven I brought it back, I reinstalled Windows. Upon restart, it said that it was still looking for GRUB, which made no sense to me. After messing around with it a bit, I decided to just reinstall Linux too. To my lack of surprise, that fixed the problem. Both OS' now ran just fine. The first thing I did on Debian was to install the Clam Anti-Virus, which I understood to be one of the best Linux anti-viruses. However, within about 10 hours, got the same problem as originally. I wasn't doing any of the same things, and between the lack of consistency in activities and the fact that I had an anti-virus running, figured it wasn't a virus. Not knowing what to do, I just left it and have been using Windows since.
Is it possible to add a menu option to allow me to open a program as root from inside the application browser window? In windows if you hold ctrl and right click a program icon your given the option to "run as" (windows equivalent of sudo). Is there a way to get something like that in the application browser in gnome?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI edited fstab to automatically mount my windows data partition on boot, but I screwed it up by not specifying the file system type, however that is not the problem, I was able to fix that easily. The problem was that when it failed to mount the partition, Debian automatically entered root and I guess that is to be expected in order for me to fix it, but I never configured a root password and it just gave me full root access without asking any password, not even my user password. I though that was strange so I set the root password and sure thing it asked me for the root password this time without automatically logging into root....
I then tried to lock the root account to see if it will ask me for a password or not, it did but of course I wasn't able to login as root because it was locked now and I was left with no way to access the system. I had to fix fstab from a live cd so that I can login normally as the user....
I didn't know what to search for or if that is the expected behavior if you don't set root password during installation, but it just seemed a bit strange to automatically enter root when you specifically disable root login during installation...
