Debian :: Unable To Edit The Sources.list?

Sep 7, 2011

I started using Ubuntu about 2 months ago, and having been studying every day since. About 2 days ago, I downloaded a copy of i386 Squeeze, and installed it onto an old extra machine (Dell 2350 tower, 768 MB RAM, 30 GB HD, Ethernet broadband) as a learning project.

During the install, I chose to not specify an online mirror. (I was trying to keep things as simple as possible, and save time while I was at it.) I didn't realize that by not specifying a mirror, the new system wouldn't have any links for finding new software. (In Ubuntu, it was automated and required no input &/or editing from me.) Reading posts at this forum, I learned that I need to edit the sources.list file. This was my first attempt at editing a Linux system script file, and I wasn't able to manage doing that. I chose to open it using gedit, and found I couldn't change its contents. I figured out then, that it was read-only.

Hardware :: USB Drives Not Listed In Fdisk And Unable To Mount?

Mar 13, 2010

New server ubuntu 9.10 install with Samba set up. Drives were mounted before Samba, but after samba was set up and I can see the server on a windows network, I can not get the usb external drives to mount or be seen at all. I also added ubuntu desktop. I used this link to set up the server and samba. [URL]

The external drive is a box of 4 drives formatted as ntfs, worked fine before I set up Samba. I am assuming when I edited the fstab toward the end I did something, just not sure what. The drives are (or were showing up as) /dev/sdb1, sdc1, sdd1, and sde1. I tried to follow the wiki on how to maybe set up automounting and thats when I found they werent even showing up in fdisk. "Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share"

General :: Fdisk Displays No Results - Unable To Mount Location

Mar 5, 2011

I've just installed Debian 6 on an old pc so i can use it as a file server. As far as i know installation went fine but it didn't detect my Edimax wireless network card. The problem I'm having is using FDISK. I tried to explore my CD drive and i got an error message "Unable to mount location". I wanted to see if there was an installer to install my network card becuase the manufacturer says it's supported by Linux. When i use the su - command and try using fdisk -l it just displays the command prompt and no hdd info. I tried it the other day becuase I want to mount all the physical drives and one logical volume. This is only the first step for me configuring this computer as a server and i'm suck already and ready to give up and try Windows server (whcih i don't really want to do).Has anyone got any ideas how i can mount my cdrom and why FDISK isn't working?

CentOS 5 :: Unable To Boot After Fixing Partition Order In Fdisk - Grub Fails

Apr 29, 2009

It seemed that it would be simple enough: take the 'f' option in the expert menu of fdisk to put partitions in order after a gap had been created by a deleted partition and then make corresponding changes in /boot/grub/grub.conf because the root partition was shifted.

Well, it didn't work out that way. No matter what I try, I either see the error 15 at Stage1.5 or the error 28, which is even stranger (file does not fit into memory). All this before I even see a grub menu. It just does not get that far.

Does anyone want to take as stab at guessing what might have happened here and whether I have a chance at recovering without having to reinstall? I can provide concrete data, if anyone would be kind to give it a try. Hoping that this is a known problem and something can be guessed from what I stated here but I can be as specific as needed, just don't want to generate noise if there are no takers.

Debian :: Disk Setup - Df And Fdisk Reports Different

Dec 9, 2010

Iīm pretty new to linux and debian and I have a problem with my disk setup. I have a rocketRAID hardware card installed for RAID setup. In addition I have a separate HDD for linux and use the RAID-setup for server purposes. Now, when I boot the system, grub boots /dev/sda1. This does not work and I have to change to /dev/sdb1 for it to find the system files. (although sometimes it works, but in these cases the system does not find the RAID-disks. Thatīs for another time thou).

The strange thing about this, to me in any case, is that "fdisk" reports correctly, with sda and sdb but "df" reports all disks as sda and none as sdb. It also misses a partition of the RAID-disks which fdisk reports. hereīs a screengrab from "fdisk -l" and "df -h"

Debian Configuration :: Fdisk And NTFS Hard Drive

Aug 24, 2015

when I type 'fdisk -l' I get the following:

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdb1 16065 584830259 584814195 278.9G f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sdb5 16128 584830259 584814132 278.9G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT

I have 2 hard drives both are 278.9GB in a mirror raid 1. Why does 2 partitions show up? Are they referring to each physical hard drive? I want to believe that this is the same partition and not two different physical hard drives since both are in the same 'start' and 'end' range. Is that correct?

Debian Configuration :: Duplicate Disks With Same Uuid Under Fdisk

Jan 19, 2016

I am running Debian 3.2.0-0.bpo.2-amd64 on hyper-v, my / volume ran out of space and is sitting at 100%, I have extended the disk size on hyper-v, however when I go to Fdisk I see duplicates of each disk.

I have total of 2 vhds on the vm, so I see 4 disks under fdisk. Here is the output of fdisk

Debian Configuration :: Fdisk And System Disagree About Disks?

Dec 15, 2010

I have never seen this one before (see below) - note how /dev/sda1 is mounted from the first disk listed by fdisk, but /dev/sda2 comes from the second disk; what is going on here? This is what I did: I installed the latest debian "Testing", which went well - it found the disks in the order show by fdisk -l here. When it booted up after installation, it failed because it couldn't find /, which I repaired by editing the grub menu (I told it to start from the other disk), and it came up. But now I had to mount /u01 by hand from /dev/sda1; strange. I suppose I could just go and change the physical disks around, but I'd like to understand this. Any ideas?

# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Debian Configuration :: New Squeeze Install - Mismatched Fdisk Cylinder Numbers?

Feb 10, 2011

I just installed Squeeze on a 4 disk system, each disk set up identically with 4 partitions, with the last partition of each disk used for a raid 5 array. I used the squeeze installer, and chose the 'manual' partition option for this setup.

After installation, fdisk reports the ending cylinder number of each of the 4 disks as one more than the total number of cylinders for the disk. I've never seen this before. In the past when I've used fdisk to manually partition disks, the final cylinder number was always equal to the total number of cylinders.

For example:

Disk /dev/sdd: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000937dd

[Code]...

The disk has 60801 cylinders, and the 'End" cylinder number for /dev/sdd4 is reported as 60802. I would have expected it to be 60801. Is this a bug or problem? It's working OK, but I don't know if it will cause instability in the future.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Get 9.10 To Play Well With IPod Classic?

Jan 24, 2010

this noob is generally *very* satisfied with Karmic since switching over from XP after a horrendous virus wiped out my laptop. My only problems have been with hardware devices. I'm so far unable to get Ubuntu 9.10 to play well with my iPod Classic. I *do* get an iPod icon on the desktop and can move files to it, but gtkpod will not mount it. Rythmbox sees it, but doesn't move files or playlists to it. The gtkpod 'howto' file says I should have the hotplug pkg installed, and I don't see it listed as installed OR available from Synaptic manager, and my web searches for it usually lead to a deadend 'not avail'. Sorry for the verbage. what I need to know is what files / pkgs need to be installed, how do I know if they are on my system, and where do I find them if they are not? I'm assuming my iPod is not mounted correctly but it could be another issue of course.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Automout (two) IPod Touch

Jan 19, 2011

My two sons got an iPod Touch (gen 3) each for Christmas. Tired of messing with iTunes in XP, I looked at my Ubuntu 10.04 installation, including Rhythmbox, for manual move of music to and from library. It's only 8GB on the iPods, but the OS is upgraded to 4.2.1.

Updating with latest versien 1.04 of libimobiledevice etc, I still troubled a long time trying to get Ubuntu automount one of them. I tried switching between two original cables, tried all usb ports, with no .At last I tried the other iPod (I had just tried one of them at this time), and Whow!, automount on first try!! Rhythmbox shows the IPod as well. The other iPod will still not mount, even with same cable, on same usb-port, and as far as I can find out, the same settings inside the iPod. lsusb command shows both items when plugged in, and charging is working.

Debian Multimedia :: Uploading Podcasts To IPod

Feb 29, 2016

Currently I'm using gpodder to download podcasts from the internet, and gtkpod to upload them to my iPod. I like gpodder, but I'm not a fan of gtkpod. First, I find its UI rather confusing. Second, it doesn't automatically find new podcast directories, when I subscribe to a new podcast and gpodder creates a new folder. Third, it doesn't show episode release dates, so simply find a single episode in the long list is hard work! Finally, episodes are simply moved to the iPod, but I don't find them in the Podcast menu on the iPod--they are simply in the huge Music folder.

Regarding the last point, it is in fact possible to make episodes appear in the Music->Podcast entry on the iPod. You simply have to put episodes in a special playlist on the iPod repository called (surprise!) "Podcasts". It is a playlist of type "podcast", and with it podcasts are uploaded as expected to the device.

In the end, I think I'll stick with gtkpod. All other alternatives I considered don't support playlist, and this is even worse than not having episode release date, or having to manually add new podcast dirs.
