Ubuntu Multimedia :: Ipod Shuffle 2nd Generation And Rythmbox After Upgrading Can't List The Items?
Oct 21, 2010
I own an ipod shuffle and in ubuntu 10.04 worked perfectly, but after upgrading (I did a fresh install) to ubuntu 10.10 rythmbox recognizes the ipod, but it can't list the items and if I try to reload the list, rhythmbox closes irremediably.

My ipod shuffle (1st generation) will not mount in Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit when I plug it into my usb port. When I plug in the ipod I do not get an icon being created for it on the desktop. I have also checked nautilus and there is no storage device for the ipod showing when I click on computer in nautilus.I have also checked /media in nautilus and there in no listing for the ipod. The only way I can see the ipod in Ubuntu is if I open up a terminal window and use the command lsusb which then shows a listing for the ipod.
If I have the ipod plugged into my computer before I turn it on and then turn on the computer to boot with Ubuntu, Ubuntu does not boot in the normal graphics mode but boots in text mode where I have to type in my name and password on a black terminal screen. The ipod has the latest software on it as well as being reset back to original factory settings. I have no problems using the ipod if boot up on windows 7 and plug in the ipod.

my friend just got an Ipod touch, so he gave me his old shuffle. So when I got home, I plugged it in, and it mounted fine. Then I tried to rename it, but when I right click on the icon, the "Rename" option is grayed out. How do I rename it then?

Now, as of a couple days ago, my computer won't even detect my ipod..
It's a 2nd Generation Shuffle and I'm running Lucid Lynx.

Banshee will recognize iPod shuffle 4th gen. It will let me drag songs to iPod and they show up in Banshee as being on my iPod. When I disconnect iPod and hit play, the voice over tells me to please load songs from iTunes.

(using 10.10) and I just can't get my iPod Touch to sync with my Rythmbox.
When I plug my iPod into the USB port, a message is prompted, which tells me it detected a digital music device and asks me to select a program to access it. Then I select "Rythmbox" and Rythmbox opens.
My iPod's name shows on the left bar, but when I select it, no songs appear, and also I can't drag songs from my library to my iPod.
I aready tried Banshee and Amrok and it didn't work on those either.

I use Banshee 1.5.4 on Ubuntu 9.10 with a 2nd gen iPod Shuffle. I was thrilled when I plugged it in to see that everything worked right out-of-the-box but then I found that there's no way to manually order songs, Banshee always put an arrow in a column for you.
If you don't know much about the Shuffle, it lets you flick between 'sorted' and 'shuffled' mode. In sorted mode it plays songs in the order they are arranged in the music playlist. I like to keep classical and relaxing songs at the top of my playlist for when I can't sleep but Banshee won't let me manually organise my songs so I can't do this.
Peculiarly, when you drag songs to the Shuffle individually, though they will show up as being sorted, when you go to play them on the Shuffle they play in the order in which you dragged them. I was planning to just drag and drop over each song individually but I think there must be an easier way... I'm probably just missing something. P.S. Here's a screenshot to clarify. I synched the songs over in the order of Blur, Gorillaz, Air and Muse but they don't show as such

I recently installed Banshee and would like to set it as my default music player. Currently, when I plug in my iPod, Rythmbox auto loads and then Banshee cannot access the device. Is there a way to go about changing this setup so when I plug in the iPod, it's Banshee that loads it and not Rythmbox?

I've been trying to get an iPod nano 5th generation working with slackware-current, with no luck. Currently, I have upgraded to gtkpod 1.0.0 and libgpod 0.8.0. I've run iPod-read-sysinfo-extended successfully, which wrote the SysInfoExtended file in /<ipod_root>/iPod_Control/Device.
After those steps, gtkpod would copy the mp3's to the device, but would fail writing the database. So, I generated the HashInfo file from the firewire guid using the tool at [URL]. After that, gtkpod finishes writing the database to the device, and shows all the music which is present, but after ejecting the iPod, no music shows up.

When I plug the suffle in, dmesg looks good and puts it at sdb : sdb1, but /dev/sdb1 is never created.Other thumb drives mount fine at /dev/sdb1 and the shuffle mounts fine on my other debian box at /dev/sdb1. I just installed on this system and it's a pretty sparse install so I'm wondering if I'm missing some firmware.

I'm running slackware 13 and so far all my usb-devices were recognized correctly. Her ipod is running fine under windows with itunes but i'm not able to mount it on my slackware cause i don't see any partitions. Afaik, ipods have three partitions (1st firmware, 2nd music and itunes-db, 3rd ... ?). why i don't see any partitions? Here is my dmesg output when plugging in the ipod:
Code:
usb 3-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
usb 3-1: New USB device found, idVendor=05ac, idProduct=1301
usb 3-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 3-1: Product: iPod
[Code].....

I have a 3rd gen iPod shuffle which I had loaded music onto in Banshee a few months ago. It worked fine until yesterday when I decided I wanted to delete a few tracks from it. When I mounted it and opened Banshee it said I had to rebuild the database or something to that effect. I did that and could then see all the tracks on it. I went ahead and deleted the few tracks I wanted to remove, and ejected it. When I tried to use it, it says "please use itunes to sync music." A little confused, I went back and deleted all the tracks on it (using Banshee) and reloaded some tracks. It still won't work.
I haven't changed anything in Banshee (as far as I know) and I have never plugged the shuffle into itunes. I've always used Banshee to manage it and never had a problem. The only major change I can think of that might have made a difference is upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04.

I have read couple articles here about ipod shuffle sync in ubuntu. Can't I just plug it into USB, mount the ipod shuffle as drive and copy my mp3 files over? What do I miss at the moment? (I haven't bought the ipod shuffe yet, that is why I can't test it right away. What is the deal with it?)

now ubuntu won't recognize it, and the ipod shuffle is giving me a broken software error. I have a backup of the ipod shuffle, but how do I get ubuntu to recognize it so I can format it properly?

I have a first generation iPod Shuffle (yes, I know it's old) with 512 megabytes of space (feel free to laugh). I also have arch linux installed on my computer, with a music folder containing about 30 folders full of music. This totals to about 2 gigabytes of music.
What I want to do is: create a script that moves no more than 512 megabytes (it can be slightly under this amount, but NOT over) of random songs from my music folder (and it's subsequent artist/album folders) to a separate folder. I will then use gtkpod to move those random songs in the new folder to my iPod Shuffle.

I'm trying to put music on a 2GB blue 3rd gen iPod Shuffle (the long metal bodied version) using gtkpod on current Arch Linux. While the files get stored on the ipod, when I try to listen to music the ipod just says "please use iTunes to sync music". The model in question is listed as supported by gtkpod, so What's going wrong?

I am developing a customization of ubuntu for my company, as we mirror ubuntu repositories it would be great that the distro's sources.list be configured for using our repos instead of ubuntu's official on install, without the need of me going PC by PC making such configuration myself... How could this be achieved? Is there documentation about it? I have only managed to find data on how to configure the sources.list after installation.

After upgrading to 11.04 I had a few issues. Most of them I've already solved but at least one remains: some visual elements don't refresh and freeze for a very long time, sometimes indefinitely. See the attached screenshot: the bottom bar doesn't show Firefox open, the date on the top one doesn't get highlighted by the cursor, the title bar of the Firefox window doesn't name the title of the page I'm visiting. The same applies to the whole desktop. They froze some time ago and stayed as they were.
Icons on these bars and the desktop are clickable, menus drop down and so on, so they haven't crashed completely, only something is wrong with their displaying. Apps, such as Firefox, work normally. The frozen elements sometimes unfreeze (but very rarely). The moment of their freezing is not specified - at other times the bottom bar managed to display the app I ran and froze then etc. I use ATI proprietary drivers and compiz. I switched back to the Classic Ubuntu Desktop. I followed some of the advice from this page: I reset X11 config, reinstalled proprietary drivers, disabled syncing to VBlank by compiz (compiz settings reset themselves during the upgrade). I also upgraded all the packages I could upgrade. It solved other problems I had but not this one.
