Debian :: Preserve / Merge Config File Information During Software Upgrades?
Mar 21, 2011
How does Debian preserve/merge config file information during software upgrades? My google searches left me a little unclear on this point. Also (if you happen to know) does Ubuntu use the same method?

I need to make an ISO9660 file from a directory, but some of the files have names that are logner than 37 characters. I could not find a way to get the long names preserved.
I've tried various ways but in vain. "genisoimage -J -R -U -max-iso9660-names -o tst.iso cdroot" gets most close to the end, but not close enough!

I am using ffmpeg for merge wav files to a mov video. My doing is below
1. First extract audio (wav file) from video
2. Create wav file from mp3 track 1
3. Create wav file from mp3 track 2
4 Merge extract audio from video with track 1 and track2.
Now finally create a new video with original video's video stream and merged audio stream.
Process is working. However final video is 3-4 times greater than original one. I want that final video should be near about size of original video. As I understand, all three wav files (created from ) make video larger.
Example commands i using is as below:

I had problems with the system not reading the monitor EDID and have fixed the problem by adding an override file in xorg.conf.d and all of that seems to be working well (although the system has not failed to read the EDID since I implemented the override. go figure).
The thing that I am wondering about is something I see in the Xorg log file. At the end of the log file, after everything seems to be configured, there are six (6) identical blocks of information regarding the EDID and modeline settings. Is this normal or is X stuck in some kind of loop? Everything is working and I am not waiting an inordinate amount of time to log on, or after. Just curious. Here is the log file.

I've installed RIPIT 3.6.0-1 for Lenny and have been following this tutorial to define a config file that saves all my options and which I can call every time I want to rip a CD [URL]
Following that tutorial I copied the config file in etc/ripit/config to the new director ~/.ripit/config. The new directory and file exist as I can see them when I do ls -a and can edit the new config file.
However when I type the command ripit all I get is the error message No config file found!

i recently started sockets programming. In the process i began to look for relevant network information about my computer and realized that ifconfig wasn't displaying the same information that resides in my /etc/network/interfaces file. On the interfaces file my IP address is 192.168.1.109 for interface eth0 but ifconfig displays 192.168.1.101. I was under the impression that ifconfig got its information from the interfaces file but clearly doesn't. I tried re configuring the device with ifconfig and then disabling and re enabling the device with ifdown and ifup so that the device updated its information but it didn't.

I've downloaded configuration files for my VPN, Kovurt, and they don't have a .ovpn file extension. Further, when I tried to enter the information manually (using this guide), I saw that the files only include the <ca> tags, and no <cert>, <key> or <tls-auth> tags.
Here is the content of one of the config files, simply named 'Tokyo' with no extension. (adding .ovpn didn't work either):
Code: Select allclient
dev tun
proto udp
remote 50.31.255.86 443
resolv-retry infinite
nobind
[Code] ....
I have an open ticket with Kovurt asking for the other info, but I know already that they don't have much in the way of documentation or support for Linux.

I am trying to install wxsqlite3-2.0.2 on my Debian machine. I have installed wxGTK-2.8.11 in the folder: /home/mrj2/wxGTK-2.8.11
When I run the wxsqlite3-2.0.2 configure script, a problem arises due to the fact that wxGTK is expected to be in a specific directory. The wx-config file cannot be found. However, there are copies of these files for each type of build in the folders:
/home/mrj2/wxGTK-2.8.11/GCCBuildDebugGTK2
/home/mrj2/wxGTK-2.8.11/GCCBuildDebugGTK2Unicode
/home/mrj2/wxGTK-2.8.11/GCCBuildReleaseGTK2
/home/mrj2/wxGTK-2.8.11/GCCBuildReleaseGTK2Unicode
/home/mrj2/wxGTK-2.8.11/GCCBuildReleaseMacUnicode
There is not a problem with my wxGTK installation as I use it in DialogBlocks and it works fine.

I have been tooling around with different way of getting our local Debian network mirror back up and running with different various scripts. I have tried apt-mirror which was a breeze to setup and run, anonftpsync again super easy to get rolling.
My question is there a way to make sure our Sarge distro doesn't get deleted from the mirror? A filtering command for rsync possibly?
I started to go over the script for the ftpsync (debian recommended!) and to be honest it seems way over my head due to lack of documentation that I have been able to find.

I chose -Server-, if this is more appropriate in -Networking-, just let me know. Basically, I need to be able to merge responses stored in a zone file with responses from an "upstream" authoritative server. I'm in the sad position of needing to "intercept" requests to *part* of a domain (but not restricted to a sub-domain!) and return results for *some* hosts that use an internally routed address, and results for the rest using the public internet addresses. Unfortunately, it's not my domain, so I can't just use views (although I suspect they could end up having some part to play in this, at least potentially)... but instead I have to actually send requests recursing to the other site's external DNS for any hosts my server doesn't have records for in the zone file.
Some background on the situation:
I work at a local government, which has a private link / VPN connection to a state government entity, and needs to use internal addresses for some of the state servers, which then get routed over an "internal" network link. But the state uses the same domain name internally and externally, just presenting views to internal clients vs. external clients. -- However, we are only being allowed access to certain of their servers through the internal link, which means that for any other servers that we don't have internal/private access for, we have to visit the public addresses just like anyone else on the internet... So, I can't just send all requests to their internal DNS and get responses, because we'd get IPs for some servers (e.g. their main web site) that we wouldn't then be able to reach using the internal network link.
For Example: Say I have a client machine, "client1", on my network ("my.net"), which uses "mydns1.my.net" for name resolution ... and which needs to access 2 servers on the state network, "private.st.us" and "public.st.us" -- so named based on how "my.net" needs to access them.
The external state DNS server/view ("ext-dns.st.us") responds to requests with something like:
private.st.us -- 1.2.3.456
public.st.us -- 1.2.3.457
(Those are just crap addresses, obviously.
The internal state DNS server/view ("int-dns.st.us") responds to requests with something like:
private.st.us -- 10.0.0.8
public.st.us -- 10.0.0.10
This works on their network because their own clients have access to all such IPs.
But for us, they only allow traffic flowing between "my.net" and their internal network to reach the 10.0.0.8 address, blocking all other address destinations. So, when "client1.my.net" asks "mydns1.my.net" for the address of "public.st.us", I need "mydns1" to recurse out to "ext-dns.st.us" to get an answer (1.2.3.457) and then return that IP to "client1" -- because "my.net" is blocked from accessing the server's 10.0.0.10 address. But, when client1 asks mydns1 for "private.st.us" I need to pull the IP (10.0.0.8) from a local zone file instead of asking either of the state DNS servers -- or optionally forward the request to "int-dns.st.us" I suppose -- because the state blocks access to certain services (which we need and are the whole cause of this problem!) via the public (1.2.3.456) address.

I've been deploying a lot of Debian based OSs for the desktops. I recommend the users to upgrade after every 2 months; however as we all know upgrades have their own flaws and issues, many times an upgrade does cause a lot of problems.
I'm deploying the testing branch of Debian, reason being hardware compatibility issues with older kernel and drivers. My main concern is security, I don't want the users to have big security venerabilities over time which's a consequence of not upgrading, but upgrading too may break the system (partially maybe...).
I know there's an option to only do security upgrades, but this will require a repository refresh... the consequence of not upgrading after a repository update is that if you install software using software center.. or even using aptitude or apt, it's bound to give a lot of dependency issues which users wont like.
This's the second question -- installing new packages with an updated repository and an older system gives issues.

Back when I was using Sarge, my machine could shut itself off when I halted it. However, I think due to some alleged security issues with my hardware, newer versions of Debian don't allow this. So, I have to manually shut it off after halting the computer. My computer is a Dell Optiplex GX1 PIII450 with 386 MB RAM.
Also, it has a 6MB mach64 video card (01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro AGP 1X/2X (rev 5c)), that, back in the Sarge days, I could enable direct rendering with mach64-20060403-linux.i386 DRI. This no longer works given the changes in Debian. So, no planetpenguin-racer for me any longer.
Besides buying new hardware, is there a way to fix either (or both) of these issues? They both were fine in previous incarnations of Debian, but alas, are now casualties of the upgrades.

This n00b is having a weird situation during dist-upgrades that I've never seen before. It's puzzling my more-experienced pals in an irc channel, too.
Sometimes--not every time--while running a dist-upgrade outside of X on my Debian Testing machines, I get an informational text display (a comment box?) that always ends with the text "(END)". The display freezes there, and I am given no opportunity to respond and let the upgrade procedure continue.[URL]..
I've tried pressing escape, the space bar, enter, arrow-keys... nothing changes (I get system beeps with each keystroke). If I Cmd+C, I get a root prompt back, but any characters I type are not displayed as I type them. For example, I can type # "shutdown -r now", and the machine will shutdown --but the characters are not displayed as I type them.
If I immediately restart, go into a regular X session, and run synaptic, I get the same comment--but in a window with a "Close" button that I can click. The upgrade will then continue [URL].. This has happened on at least 3 different boxes, all running debian testing. Under gnome and xfce... Probably with 4 different packages in the last 3 weeks?
This morning it happened on a new debian testing install, and just now it happened -- with the identical package -- on an older debian testing install on a different box.[URl]..

Creating a separate /tmp partition manually during install prevents a clean shutdown.
Setup: Debian 8 minimal server configuration (SSH only) using net install as virtual machine on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V (Gen 2).
1024 MB RAM, 20 GB VHDX, and 1 Processor, EFI boot
Packages installed: openssh-server, sudo, unattended-upgrades, bsd-mailx postfix
Application: IPv6 gateway using 6in4 tunnel
Symptoms: When shutting down the operating system (poweroff or reboot), the message
A start job is running for Unattended-Upgrades ( xx seconds / no limit ).is displayed on the console and will persist for several minutes before eventually timing out and shutting down.I've tried several different configurations. Any configuration that creates /tmp automatically (whole disk with single partition, or disk with separate /home, /var, and /tmp partitions) works fine and shuts down promptly. When I partition the disk manually (512 MB EFI Boot, 17 GB /, 3 GB /var, 512 MB /tmp, and 512+ swap) the problem occurs. I've narrowed it down to just the /tmp partition by testing and comparing various configurations (including/excluding partitions, placing partitions on a separate disk, changing the partition sizes, matching against automatic configurations, etc.).
I have also compared the /etc/fstab and /etc/default/tmpfs configuration file between working and non-working systems and cannot see any meaningful difference.

When I view a file in Linux with the 'less' command, I often only get a ":" prompt in the bottom left corner. There's no clue about how long the file will be, or at which location I am currently. When reading manpages with 'man', there's a file title and line number in that corner. And once I hit the end of the file, there's even a percentage shown. I've learned about 'less -m' but it's not that powerful. So what does 'man' differently from 'less'? They appear to be the same viewing programme, except for that file information difference.
