View 8 RepliesI want to be able to access my desktop from work so I first set up a DNS. I can ssh into my own computer and using the ip address but when I try to ssh using my DNS (this is from my home wireless which is Linksys E2000), I get the following error:

I set up the settings on the Linksys to accept DDNS but I am thinking there might be something else I overlooked? I do not understand completely what is happening to debug this. It seems like it initially accepts the connection and then something strange occurs.
I have been trying to remotely access another computer (which is outside my local network) with ssh and have not succeeded. I've done everything I've seen nothing to suggest and as I opened port 22 on both computers, I have ssh configured so as to allow access from any computer (with password) and tried to log in using the external IP (the encounter with these online pages of "what is my ip"), I have a firewall turned off, the pc from which I agree is Fedora 14 that I want to access MacOS 10.5.8.
I need this because I'm running a very heavy program at the university that I can not run on my personal laptop, but do not want to have to go every day to college for this.
I have 2 Ubuntu Computers on my home network. I haven't figured out the ways that I can connect these 2 computers to share files, remote desktop, etc. What are all my options?

- to set proxy settings as "Direct internet connection"
- disconnecting power to (including 30 sec wait): modem, router, computer + unplugging ethernet from computer
- Live CD (he only had an old one 7.10) which also didn't connect to internet, but as I am remote, I couldn't do any more. We are downloading a 10.04.1 iso for him to burn tomorrow, and will try that again.
- Uninstalled Crashplan which was the last software that we installed (and it was working ok).
I am currently ssh'ing into another computer on the network that IS working, and then ssh'ing into my Dad's computer - including a VNC session (tunneled through both machines and router).
This is my first attempt at a server, and I running Ubuntu 10.04 server. I had to reconfigure my network, so now I am attempting to use it as a server. I have a Linksys WRT54G2 connecting various machines-- Windows XP, Ubuntu builds, and LinuxMint 10 Julia.
The long and the short of it is that the server connects to the Internet-- I can get updates and install programs via terminal. The server also connects to the router, as tested by pings. The client computers all ping back and forth nicely, and I can access the file share via FTP from the local side and externally (this is part of a larger network).
How can I get it so that my client computers can access the Internet through the router and server?
I set up a server that has dhcp going. This works 100% as I get ipaddresses. My question is how do these internal computers connect to the internet? There is a proxy that needs to be passed as well...
Is this just a simple case of portforwarding or is this a completely different thing?
I have a samba share setup as the following. When I browse to it from PC's added to my AD domain, they connect instantly. When i browse to it from a laptop that's not part of the domain, i get prompted for login credentials. what credentials should I be putting in? I can't seem to figure it out. or is it because i have the workgroup set to what my AD domain name is, and the laptops aren't part of that domain.

I just recently constructed a computer to create a nice Fedora Linux server to replace a Mac Mini server that I have been using for a few years. I'm attempting to create a Samba share for my machines, a Windoze 7 machine as well as a couple MacOS 10.6 machines. I've set up Samba, started the service, allowed Samba in the firewall, and used system-config-samba to set up a share with a user. I created a User called "space", and a share /media/peliculas/Movies (a mounted hard drive). When I type in \IP_ADDRESS in the address bar in windows 7, I get the option to log in. I log in correctly and I see two directories "space" and "Movies." Unfortunately when I click on one of them I get the following error message:

I also get something similar when I attempt to connect with my mac machine. Using "Connect to Server" I type in: smb:\IP_ADDRESS, and login, I have the option to mount "Movies" or "space." If I select any of these, I get the following error message: There was an error connecting to the server "IP_ADDRESS." Check the server name or IP addres, and then try again. If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator.
Also, if I type 'smbclient -U space -L IP_ADDRESS' I can see the "Movies" in the "Sharename." At this point I'm not sure what else to do, and have been trying to figure this out for the last few days (losing sleep due to being baffled). The only thing that I can think of is that I have something wrong with the smb.conf file. Here is what it currently displays:

I tried to connect two ubuntu computers via crossover network. But sometimes they can connect and see each other and even ping each other and sometimes not!
Each time, each of my PC's can ping it's own IP address but may not ping the other PC. I tried to disconnect cable, reconnect, disable network, enable it again, change IP address, disconnect via Network Manager Applet, reconnect and... . But when one of them don't want to connect I can't do this anyway!
Anyone knows what must be the problem? Sometimes it took about many seconds to get them connected, and sometimes they can't connect for many hours.
I must add that I have an ADSL modem on one of two Ubuntu PCs that connect via another cable.
This may sound stupid but I've got to ask. Can I connect multiple computers running Ubuntu & run software from one computer from the other? I know how to connect using SSH & to copy files back & forth but I don't know how or if I can share programs.

A requirement of my servers is that they be fully self-maintaining.
By this is mean that they will download their own updates, restart them-self, and switch them-self back on after general house power failure (black out).
Is there a way in Linux to make the computer automatically reboot itself after download and installing an update (if it needs to). My Linux uses the apt package system, with Synaptic Package Manager/Update Manager.
Now here is another problem I found. When a customer has logged into my site, my computer won't register them as logged in when they've rebooted? Like, its going to issue them new cookies? Credit card transaction process will be have to be restarted?
What if I build two identical server running in sync with each other... sort of like RAID mirror.. and they both download and install updates, once their both ready to reboot. Computer 1 will reboot. On successful reboot, System 1 alerts System 2 that it successfully reboot and that System 2 may now reboot. This way the customers experience is not interrupted.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSorry if this is a dumb question, there's a lot about networking that I don't get yet. I've got two computers using the same wireless router. They both get their IP addresses via DHCP from the router (I assume). If I want to connect from one machine to another, I can use the IP address (which works), but it's a pain checking what the IP address is, I guess it depends on which one connects first? So it might work today but tomorrow the IP addresses are reversed and the same command wouldn't work.
What I'd like to do is just refer to the other computer by name, but of course I haven't got a DNS server just for these two computers, and I don't think the router can do it (can it?) so is there a way to do it? Is it really just a case of switching off DHCP and giving each computer a fixed and unique IP address, and then entering some name in the hosts file for the two computers? Although then there's nothing to guarantee that the name in the hosts file actually matches the hostname of the computer at that IP I suppose.

Ive been bashing away now for 2 days and i have managed to install squid (i first tried manually, but that did not work so i used synaptic software packager to install it (from Administration menu)
That went well, thereafter i installed webamin to work with squid in a GUI
I have managed to start squid and added my range of IP addresses to the ACL list
I have added the proxy restriction too.
Now, i tried to test it.
I opened Iceweasel Web browser (on the same machine) and setit to use the Proxy server: localhost and port:3128
That works fine.
But when i try to change the proxy setting to my machines ip (where squid is installed) :
Proxy server: 10.0.0.35 and port:3128
That does not work.
Am i missing something, please help
I then tried to set another windows PC on the network to:
Proxy server: 10.0.0.35 and port:3128
That also does not work.
I also edited the conf file to http_access allow all, but i do not know if i have doen it correctly, but maybe there is another problem?
