Debian Installation :: Testing - All Logins Fail / System Error Message From The Passwd Command?

Mar 18, 2010

I just installed Squeeze on an older PC. Installation seemed to go fine. But when it booted up on the installed system for the first time, I could not login - username/password failure. I tried every possible typing error and CAP LOCK error I could have made - still nothing.

I brought up a console window and tried logging in as root - same problem.

I booted into single user mode and entered passwd command to set new root password - I got a SYSTEM ERROR message from the passwd command.

I booted to a Live CD, went to /etc/shadow and deleted the encrypted password. Rebooted on the hard drive, went to console window and logged in as root, with no password required. So far so good. I entered passwd command to set new password and got the same SYSTEM ERROR message.

The machine seems fine when running on the Live CD, and the install seemed to go fine.

Ubuntu :: /dev/sda1 Or UUID Xxxxxxx Not Found After Upgrade To 10.04 From 9.10

May 28, 2010

I was upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 and now my HDD can't boot at all to the 2.6.34-rc6 kernel, I get dumped to the busybox shell, and when I select the 2.6.30.9 I get "The hard drive for / is not ready or not present."

I can see the drive fine with fdisk -l, /dev/sda1 is my HDD, but when booting something isn't working right. Also, is there a way to make GRUB 2 automatically show the menu so I don't have to hold down the shift key?

Debian :: Debian Testing Vs Debian Stable With Testing Repositories?

Feb 28, 2009

I am a ubuntu user but I want to go to the next level to use debian because what I heard of it, but I get confused to what to install on my computer do I install debian testing or debain stable with testing repositories.

- I want to use this system to the home use only.
- I want to use the newest packages because the stable packages is too old to use.
- What about using more than one repository i.e stable with testing with unstable at the same time (the same sourcelist)
- Is the testing and unstable sid packages good enough for the home use?

General :: Edit UUID Using The Dd Command?

Oct 9, 2010

I have gone over the thread "Learn The DD Command Revised" (It was Fantastic) in the search for a solution to my query.

I have seen posted elsewhere that this code is supposed to be able to change the UUID number of NTFS partitions (useful when multi-booting with Grub2 and cloning partitions). Here is the code:

Code:
sudo dd if=/dev/urandom bs=80 count=1 | xxd -l 80 -c 8 | tail -1 | xxd -r - /dev/sda1
This is assuming that I want to change the UUID on the 1st partition on the 1st hard drive >>>sda1<<<
If I was trying to modify the 2nd partition on the 1st hard drive it would be >>>sda2<<<

[Code].....

NOTE: I was doing this while booting from Ubuntu's Live CD version 10.04.1 LTS (In case that is a factor)

Debian Configuration :: Xen-create-image - Command Not Found

Oct 26, 2015

I have been following the Xen Beginners Guide here: [URL] .....

Everything was going smoothly until I got to the 'Configuring xen-tools and building our guest' section (two thirds down the page).

I installed xen-tools and then typed the following in a terminal window (as root):

xen-create-image --hostname=development-pv-guest --memory=2048mb --vcpus=2 --lvm=develop --dhcp --pygrub --dist=jessie

I admit PV is new to me, compared to simple HVM, so I have a number of questions:

1. Why the command not found error?

2. Should I be booting from the Xen option or regular boot option at the start up screen when creating the xen image? I've tried both and get the same error message.

3. I have Debian 8 (Jessie) installed on my system and I wasn't sure whether I should therefore make this the guest OS in my Xen PV. In asking this question I'm thinking in terms of HVMs - but I assume my Xen PV needs a guest OS of some kind? Or is my host Debian 8 already acting as a guest OS in Xen PV? I'm confused

4. If I do need to install a guest OS, is it better to go for an earlier version of debian - so as not to be so resource hungry?

I'm nervous about screwing up my host debian installation, so when I got the error message, did some research but found nothing meaningful. I don't want to end up having to reinstall my Debian 8 (base OS) ... again!

'apt-get' still worked.
Anyway, if you're gonna update check dependencies first. It seems I lost gnome due to gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs. So first uninstall that package if you got it.

Debian Multimedia :: Graphics Mode And 'xf86config' Command Not Found?

Mar 29, 2011

I recently did a reinstall on my system and I am now running Squeeze. I am currently trying to get some software running, but I believe I am having issues with the graphics requirements. The software needs an X server with 8 bit / PseudoColor mode. It is recommended to work in "8,24"-overlay mode. This was set up on my old install on this computer, so I know it is not a problem with my graphics card. But in the installation guide it says to enable this function it is necessary to add some information in the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. The problem is I don't have this file. I had this file in my old install, but on the fresh install it is not there. I have the /etc/X11/ directory, and it contains: directories: app-defaults, applnk, cursors, fonts, twm, xinit, xkb, Xreset.d, Xresources, Xsession.d

and

files: default-display-manager, rgb.txt, X, Xreset, Xsession, Xsession.options, XvMCConfig, Xwrapper.config

I think I've looked through everything in the /etc/X11/ directory but I don't see anything that looks like the XF86Config-4 file. Is there possibly a package that I am missing or something I need to run to create this file? I know on my old install this file was created or modified by running 'xf86config' in the command line. I've tried that, but it tells me 'command not found'.

Debian Hardware :: Setting Up Serial Port - Command Not Found

Jun 23, 2014

I am a ham radio operator and I want to use my computer to run "RTTY", "PSK31", and other digital modes. Therefore I have to be able to configure the serial port.

I only have the onboard port (ttyS0).

I can get info about the port by using "$ dmesg | grep tty"

Code: Select alldebian@melsdeb:~$ dmesg | grep tty
[    0.000000] console [tty0] enabled
[    1.533804] serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
[    1.534337] 00:06: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A

But when I try to use "setserial" by itself or with any parameters I get this...

Code: Select alldebian@melsdeb:~$ setserial -g /dev/ttyS0
bash: setserial: command not found

Even "man setserial" gives the same result.

I am using Debian 6

Debian :: Change The UUID Of A Partition?

May 9, 2011

I have, as I have in the past, copy/pasted a partition using gparted to get a working OS to another place.

I have always done this in the past to a different drive. Never paid much attention to the UUID.

This time I did it on the same drive. The partitions have the same UUID. This is not a good thing.

The copied OS boots and mounts fine as I edited the fstab to go by /dev/sdxy (where x is the drive and y the partition). My grub uses a custom menu using symbolic menu entries so it goes by the partition definition instead of UUID too.

I would really like to change the UUID on that partition.

Debian Installation :: How To Get UUID For Root In Grub CFG

Mar 15, 2015

I am running Wheezy as my main OS in the first drive in my desktop. I use the 2nd drive for data. I am trying to add another OS to multiboot. When I ran grub-update in Wheezy, I am getting device letter for the root device instead of UUID in grub.cfg, in the os-prober section. Like this

Code: Select allsearch --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 6ee49a8e-a619-49c7-9f66-51a5ca9a48cc
   linux /boot/vmlinuz-316-x86_64 root=/dev/sdb3
   initrd /boot/initramfs-316-x86_64.img

In the same file, UUID was used for the existing kernels.

Code: Select alllinux   /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-4-686-pae root=UUID=c2eecf02-d427-4f2e-9fd0-9db61256cbac ro  quiet
   echo   'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
   initrd   /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-4-686-pae

How can I get UUID instead of /dev/sdb3 for the 2nd OS?

Debian Configuration :: Hdd Dev Letters - UUID And Labels ?

Jun 30, 2011

I have a debian 6 system in my basement acting as a media server. Debian is on a separate HDD from the raid drives and there is one external drive. Under normal conditions the Debian HDD shows up as /dev/sdk and the external shows up as /dev/sdl, no problems here because I use UUID for mounting. The problem is sometimes this drive isn't picked up on restarts (its old and I think the issue is the power supply in the base of it, to be solved later) . This wouldn't be a problem but it some how shuffles the drive addresses and the Debian HDD becomes /dev/sde, this in turn messes up a script that does a weekly dd of that hard drive. I am only really worried about this for when I go on vacation and I wont be at home if the power goes out.

So, is there a way to address the entire hard drive (not just a partition) other than the dev file? Why did this change from Debian 5 to 6? I never had this problem before with 5.

In case you are wondering, I find it easier recover from an image rather than do a reinstall, then get all the updates and software, then put in all the backed up files.

Debian Installation :: Why Does 8.2 Change UUID Of Swap Drive

Dec 14, 2015

Been doing some installations in a newly upgraded machine where I'm setting up two instances of 8.2 in slightly different configurations.Installing from netinst AMD64 DVD with firmware non-free. First installation goes smooth as then the second changes the UUID of the swap partition, meaning that the first then can't find it. To add insult to injury the second installation doesn't install GRUB in the MBR of the HDD.

Nothing different or special about the installation which is standard graphical with manual allocation of previously set up partitions. I don't touch the swap drive in the partitioner - just point to the correct partitions for / and /home as I want them. This is exactly as I've done before, many times.Setup asks me if I want to install GRUB in MBR and I answer "No" (because it would otherwise load in MBR of sda where I want it on sdb) then point to sdb in the next screen. Again really nothing different to what I've done dozens of times.
