Debian :: Hide Lost+found Of Ext3 On Lenny?
Mar 24, 2011
I've just installed a new 2TB disk. Its formatted as ext3 and mounted. Works fine.Only concern is that the lost+found directory is visible to normal users. The disk mount point is owned by root. ls -l showsdrwx------ 2 root root 16384 2011-03-24 10:36 lost+foundThe applicable line from fstab is/dev/sdb1 /var/wayfinder ext3 defaults 0 1

I installed ubuntu on my dual boot Debian/Lenny and windows 7 toshiba laptop. Now when I try to boot Lenny i get the following error messages:
kinit : name_to_dev_t(/dev/sda6)=dev(8,6)
kinit : trying to resume from /dev/sda6
kinit : No resume image doing normal boot ....
[code].....
I can see the whole filesystem is there. The problem may have something to do with the boot loader. I was originally using Grub 1.5 when I just had Lenny and Windows 7, but when I installed ubuntu it has installed GRUB 2. When I use the debian install cd to go into rescue mode, all the init scripts are still where they should be. Another thing that happened when I partioned of a section for ubuntu all the dev numbers went up one. In the debian /boot/grub/menu.lst windows 7 was booting under (hd0,1) now it boots under (hd0,2) debian used to boot from (hd0,7) with root=/dev/sda8 but now it is under (hd0,8) root=/dev/sda9 in the GRUB2 menu.lst. Is there anyway to get my Debian back up and running? After 6 months of studying it at uni I am finally learning my way around and want it back.

I've done some searches on here and can't seem to find anyone making any mention of this one site I found. Has anyone used the Debian Lenny KDE32 images from this site?[URL].. I downloaded it and it works GREAT! I think the solution for us poor Lenny holdouts might have been found. Especially those who have ati radeon cards. As background. I am running a Radeon 9000 pro agp card. I've been looking for SOME way to get KDE4 that works. Kubuntu, forget it. Mandriva was close but I'd miss apt too much. I was thinking of trying backports. But it seems these guys have already done the work. I downloaded their Lenny KDE32 image and burned it. Be aware, this is a DVD image, not a cd image. At 786megs it won't fit on a cd. But I put it on a dvd and it worked fine. Booted up to a nice clean running KDE4 on a lenny system. I still have some tinkering if I install it (blacklist pcspeaker for example, and get audio cd's to play) But here is my catch. I brought up the screensaver and chose my favorite: Solar winds. It a Gl screensaver, so 3d has to be working good.

Now am terribly frustrated because i reinstalled my linux installation(Ubuntu 8.04) after falling prey to an inode error. So i reinstalled stuff under my root partition under which i had some files which i obviously lost.I have tried recovering the files (mostly mp3 files) using photorec and the max file size i managed to recover was 4.0MB. the rest fall in the tune of 300kb.My question is, is there a way to make a full recovery of the above files seeing that they indeed can be recovered?

I have suddenly lost a lot of free on my new Fedora 14 install.
To keep the story short, here's what disk usage looks like on my home: image
As you can see, home takes 100% but only 34% are actually occupied.
When entered as a root du | sort -nr > out.txt

i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

I discovered two folders marked with a cross in my root:
- root
- lost+found
And when I'm trying to reinstall a newer version of Netbeans, 6.9.1. it claims that there is already something running in 'root folder "The installer lock file exists at /root/.nbifile/.nbillock"
The question is - is those folders are needed for Ubuntu working? -If not how to delete them? And one more question - how to delete a programme from the 'Applcations-Programming'? I tried to do that via 'System-Preferencies-Main Menu' and tried to delete a previous version of Netbeans, but it didn't work, - nothing happens, the previous version is still there, so I have two ones - 6.9.1 and 6.9.

On a school network the Windows and Mac computers connect to the internet with no problem. The Ubuntu(10.04) computers are connected and work on the internal network but have major issues going out of the building. I can get to one or two webpages to open and the connection dies...Server not found. Ping within the network and there are no lost packages, if I ping outside many lost packages.
We are using SonicWall and think it could be blocking...but why only Ubuntu? This is the same behavior for Firefox and Seamonkey. It's also the same for the thin/fat clients and standalone units. I did try a fresh install with no effect. The internet actually works on the one machine with ubuntu 9.10. I brought a machine home and it connected to the internet with no problem.
Two things I can think of that would of caused this are:
1- we keep getting windows about missing applets, someone may have clicked delete
2- I connected a server to run fat clients w/ LTSP and discovered my server and the schools were handing out the same ip's.

I have a weird problem here with a 9.04 server. We have a raid 5 disk formatted in EXT4 which remounted automatically when we accessed to the lost+found folder which is in the root of that disk.
I tried to delete it but I can't. It's a bit annoying because I have to prevent all users and backups to access to that folder.

I have been using ubuntu netbook 10.10 on my Dell Mini 9 for the past few month without any problem; it connects wirelessly to the internet via a wireless router. Yesterday in the middle of web surfing, suddently firefox cannot see any website outside of my home network (Firefox displays Server not found page). No help when I rebooted a few times and connect to my home network via wireless or even wire cable; it can access files in my network file server (DNS-321) but not the internet. My desktop computer running Windows Vista and ASUS media player has no problem accessing the internet.

I wish that some partitions were hidden and others were read only, moreover I wish that these settings can't be edited by other users (except of course root user). For do this, have I only in "fstab" file in "etc" folder to comment (or delete) lines relatives to partitions that I wish are hides and I set options to "ro" to lines relatives to partitions that I wish are read only?

I Tarred and GZipped most of the data on one 1Tb partition and stuck the archives on a second 1Tb partition on a separate disk. I then proceeded to format the first partition with NTFS (from Linux.) The only problem is that I completely forgot that I had a CD drive and formatted sdc1 instead of sdd1! I began doing a full NTFS format and after a minute or two I cancelled it and decided to do a quick format. I then realized my mistake. I managed to find a copy of the superblock and began trying to recover the disk. fsck -t ext3 recognized the partition as NTFS but I luckily didn't have fsck.ntfs installed so it didn't touch it. I managed to get it working with fsck.ext3 (with -b,-B and -y) fsck.ext3 didn't mind that it was an NTFS partition.
Roughly how long will this take? It's running from Knoppix within a virtual machine to a USB hard drive which is 100% full. Days? Being that for a few minutes I attempted a full format am I going to end up with a bunch of corrupted archives? If I do end up with file corruption can anyone recommend a way of recovering the data / sorting it out? Is it likely to be just a few old files that are corrupt (It's my understanding that filesystems like to keep files in the same area on the disk to minimize the amount of head travel.) This might just be wishful thinking but as the filesystem fills up will ext3 put the newer files towards the end of the disk? If so then I'm hoping that a full NTFS format starts at the beginning of the disk.

I'm teaching my son about Linux and he has a system dual-booting Debian Squeeze and Windows XP.Recently, his Windows hard disk ran out of room (It's a rather old system, the disk was 13 GB) and we replaced it with an 80 GB drive that we thought was dead. After successfully cloning the Windows disk, we put the new disk in the old slot (hdd) and rebooted.Windows runs fine with it, but when trying to boot Debian, it ran into a myriad of errors (too many to list here) and eventually timed out trying to deal with this apparently renegade hard drive. The only way we can boot Debian is to shutdown the computer, disconnect the hard drive and boot up.
Rather inconvenient My question is:Is there any way to hide that disk from the Debian system so it doesn't go trying to detect it and run into these snags?I'd like to simply replace it with a brand-new drive, but that's absolutely out of the budget for now.

I have added a 10 Mbps network card to my SGI O2 MIPS workstation running Debian Lenny running the 26-2 kernel. The workstation already has an onboard NIC which is working fine.(eth0).
lspci -v shows ths card as:-00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Compex ReadyLink 2000 (rev 0a) Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 18 I/O ports at 1800 [disabled] [size=32] Upon googling I found out that this card is an NE2000 clone. I downloaded the latest 2.6.36 kernel sources and did the following:-
1. Make Menuconfig
2. Loaded an alternate kernel config file (my working kernel config file)
3. In DeviceDrivers->Network device support->Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)
I selected ASIX AX88796 as the help associated with this showed it as an NE 2000 clone. configured it to be a module and did make, make_modules and make_install. Edited /etc/Modules to load ax88796 and added an alias eth1 ax88796 to this file. copied the new kernel to the /boot and did a reboot, the machine booted up fine and udev -r showed the 2.6.36 kernel and lsmod showed ax88796 loaded. But, Iam not able to bring up eth1 using:-
ifup eth1
The error messages given are:-
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device
