Running the nvidia driver 304.125 from the repos. Debian 8.

I am running 4 monitors without xinerama. I'm not using xinerama because there is a bug which prevents opengl acceleration from working on all four screens since one of the gpus is a bit older than the other.

The solution for this, I am told, is to use xrandr instead of xinerama.

I'm using arandr as a nice front end to xrandr. However, when I run arandr on each screen, the only output it shows as available is the current screen.

I also see:

Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0"

etc.

How do I enable the RANDR extension so I can get arandr working and unify my four monitors into one?

I'm using Debian Lenny, the only problem that I have is that the sound card isn't recognize by the system, I have installed ALSA 1.0.20 and I followed several tutorials trying to enable my sound card (ATI tech Azalia (Intel HDA)but all tries fail.

So, after install another distro -debian based- in the same pc I figured out that the sound card is enable and running by default, the ALSA version is the same -1.0.20- but the kernel is different -2.6.31.xx- so my questions are:

1. do you recommend me to upgrade my lenny's kernel to fix the problem?

2. is there a way to upgrade specific packages -for example samba, alsa, kernel- using unstable or testing versions instead of upgrade the entire distro? actually I'm confortable with lenny

3. what configuration should I check in the "other" distro to use that parameters in lenny?

I currently run openVPN on my Debian box that provides secure ipv4 routing from my laptop to my VPS in a different country (and from there the internet via this box). This works fine. However, id like to sort out ipv6 through this VPN as well as IPV4 and not overly sure how to do it. The remote server itself has native ipv6 configured on device eth0 and it works (ping6, traceroutes all fine,incoming to web servers etc) nicely on dual stack.

How would i go about modifying the config (both client and server if needed) to enable openVPN to act as a tunnel broker to enable the laptop to use the ipv6 through the server as well as the old v4? (the internet connection laptop end will not/does not have native ipv6 from the ISP. Currently im using he-net tunnel broker but id like to run myself through my existing openVPN). VPN config details: Its using UDP, port 1194, creates a TUN interface, redirect-gateway etc and the rest is normal config. Edit:- if it matters the clients are all running windows so i cant use sh scripts to set up stuff client end.

Now everything is just fine but i can't get 3d accelerator to work and due to this some games are running very slow. I am a new linux user. I have some issues concerning so called "11-minutes-mode" - RTC update"11-minutes-mode" definition In hwclock man page we can read:"Automatic Hardware Clock Synchronization By the KernelYou should be aware of another way that the Hardware Clock is kept synchronized in some systems. The Linux kernel has a mode wherein it copies the System Time to the Hardware Clock every 11 minutes. This is a good mode to use when you are using something sophisticated like ntp to keep your System Time synchronized. (ntp is a way to keep your System Time synchronized either to a time server somewhere on the network or to a radio clock hooked up to your system. See RFC 1305).

This mode (we'll call it "11 minute mode") is off until something turns it on. The ntp daemon xntpd is one thing that turns it on. You can turn it off by running anything, including hwclock --hctosys, that sets the System Time the old fashioned way. To see if it is on or off, use the command adjtimex --print and look at the value of "status". If the "64" bit of this number (expressed in binary) equal to 0, 11 minute mode is on. Otherwise, it is off. If your system runs with 11 minute mode on, don't use hwclock --adjust or hwclock --hctosys. You'll just make a mess. It is acceptable to use a hwclock --hctosys at startup time to get a reasonable System Time until your system is able to set the System Time from the external source and start 11 minute mode. I recently installed Deluge 1.2.0 from the following PPA:[URL]I using this on two different Linux computers. One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect.Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

When installing Samba and Webmin I use the application "system-config-services" or (if it is easier to find for you that way) menu->Administration->Service management. In this application I can start the services I need (nmb, smb, webmin), but the enable/disable at startup setting is greyed out... Even when I start the application as root it still gives me no possibility to configure the services to start up on boot. This should be possible. It works this way in Fedora 13 and Fedora 14, so why not in Fedora 15?

Before reporting a bug, I would like to ask if other users here have the same problem (and -if possible- a solution)... In the mean tim I guess it is back to the old way of configurating services - sigh..

[edit] I tried to remove the [SOLVED] from the title, but the forum software does not seems to allow me to do that... I thought it was solved by installing xinetd, but I was happy a bit too early. I still have no answer for this problem.

I have a server that I can only access via SSH (it's located far away) and I would like to secure it by blocking all ports except the ones that I need (which are HTTP and SSH). I still want to be able to make outgoing connections to enable software updates and other things.This is my iptables -L -n :

In my opinion, this should block all incoming packets except the ones on port 80 and 22, but allow responses to outgoing connections. But a wget http://google.com does not work, it can't establish the connection.

Maybe this is not the best style for iptables rules, but I want to be absolutely sure to not accidently lock myself out from SSH, so I chose not to configure a "block-everything rule".

Does this configuration not enable incoming packets from connections initiated from inside?

I am having no luck configuring ProFTPd on a Debian Lenny production server we use to host our MySQL databases and a few websites. I had originally set it up so I could login and manage our internal sites, but I have the need to allow a few clients in to access their sites that we host. I am trying to root the users in their site directory, which would be "/sites/www.whatever.com/".

It just hit me while typing this. Is it possible to create a user without a shell to prevent login via SSH and set the home folder to /sites/whatever instead of /home/username? That would allow me to continue operating with my current configuration and root them in their site while preventing SSH logins.

So I correctly see the two luns, but multipath doesn't create the relative devices. Under /dev/mapper I see: control mpath0 mpath0-part1 mpath0-part1 is the first lun, the one I mounted in a directory under filesystem. I can't find the device for the second lun

I am *finally* getting around to rebuilding my file-sharing computer. I'll be sharing files with both Linux and Windoze machines. It's a home network, so there's nothing fancy needed. I know I have to tweak my smb.conf file until I'm satisfied with the features and security. I'm using SWAT and I'm starting with a bare-bones conf file. It's not secure but I can see the server and selected files/directories from my other Linux box.

My really dumb question is, do I have to reboot both the server and the client machines every time I change the SAMBA configuration? I thought I just had to stop and restart the SAMBA service in the SWAT software - but then the server disappears from my client. It looks like I need to reboot both machines for the client to see the server.

I have a PC104 running debian. I have 3 hard drives (in addition to the one booting) mounted in fstab by UUID. I use the options defaults,error=remount-ro. However, this means that when I boot with the hard drives not attached, I have to press Ctrl-D to bypass when the boot discovers the drives are missing. Is there a timeout commandoption I can add to fstab so that it automatically continues booting even if the hard drives are not attached? I could not find anything on a timeout command. (I tried adding timeout=1000 but no-random guess)

I am using Squessze and Gnome. When I try to use the gui System>Administration>Network or Users and Groups I get the error The configuration could not be loaded. You are not allowed to access the system configuration.Everything was working before. I read around a bit. In some cases,it was caused by mismatching group and password files after using the gui. I do not know how to check if they are matching. Of course I do not know for sure that is the problem in my case.

I am working on a Debian 2.6.26-19 Distribution with exim4 as MTA. After a system restart a problem occurred with delivering emails to local addresses. These local addresses use a 1and1 mailserver for email. The MX records for the local domain are set correctly but exim does not use a DNS lookup for these addresses because it identifies them as local addresses. I figured this out by executing the exim4 -d -bt command. The dns lookup part of the result looks like this (I replaced the actual address with placeholders):

The eventual result of the exim4 -d -bt command is: [user]@[domain.ext] is undeliverable: Unrouteable address How can I make sure, that exim4 makes a DNS lookup for the local addresses instead of skipping it? I know that I have to edit a exim4 configuration file, but I could not figure out which and how.

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze D-u - Kernel Configuration Skipped

I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.

I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.

I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.

So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.

However, just in case someone else runs into this:

1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.

2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)

I recently just installed Squeeze on an ia64 system and was having some troubles with running VNC.I get the following error, more specifically for some reason I get a malloc - memory corruption error:
