Jun 15, 2011I'm running Debian sid and currently have xfce 4.8.0 installed. I have the thunar-volman package and it is configured to automount everything (cdrom & usb). I have hal, udev, gamin and autofs installed as well.For some reason though, automount just isn't working. It's starting to annoy me.I can mount the devices manually.I looked around already but most posts just advise you to install hal or something.

May 11, 2015There seems to be no documentation on how to automount partitions and USB devices under systemd in Jessie. (Overall, systemd entirely lacks any useful documentation or GUI configuration tools -- all very cryptic and hidden.)
I created custom files to enable automounting. I put them in /etc/systemd/system -- this may not be the right place, but it works.
Kernel note:
This does not work under the old Wheezy kernel linux-image-3.2.0-4.
To automount my Windows partition so I can access its files, I created:
/etc/systemd/system/media-windows.mount
The name of the file must match the mount point -- in this case, /media/windows
My file notes the device and file type, plus an fmask option so all the Windows files don't seem to be executable:
[Unit]
Description = windows mount to /media/windows
[Mount]
What=/dev/sda1
Where=/media/windows
Type=ntfs-3g
Options=fmask=111
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
The file ownership must be root.root. Apparently it doesn't need to be executable.
After creating, enable with:
sudo systemctl enable media-windows.mount
and it will mount on the next boot.
I read elsewhere that the before running the enable command you should run a start command:
sudo systemctl start media-windows.mount
but that didn't work for me.

Even the second user is not logged in automount does not work for main user. When I log in as second user (with device plugged in) it is mounted automatically after log in.
What can I do with this problem?
I would like to access devices from each user (not necessarily at the same time).
How can I configure it?
How can I "remount" device to my current user without switching into the second one (it's someones else account)?

May 3, 2010When a USB device is attached to the laptop 10.04 does not automount the device. i.e. the device, be at an external drive, memory stick or iPod does not display with the correct icon on the desktop.
However, if one looks under Places|Computer there they all are with the correct icons. The devices can then be mounted from there.

This is really disappointing given that 10.04 was promoted on its iPod friendliness!

Mar 5, 2010With the GNOME desktop environment, when I plug in my iPhone, Nautilus automatically mounts it and I can browse and download my photos from it, as though the iPhone were a digital camera. Also the F-Spot auto-run dialog pops up asking if I want to import photos from the iPhone.In XFCE though, plugging in the iPhone doesn't do anything at all, except begin charging the phone. No auto-mounting is done in XFCE, no auto-run dialogs, nothing.
What is different here? Is it possible to get XFCE to auto-mount them? I thought XFCE uses GVFS like GNOME does? This is Fedora 12, by the way, with XFCE 4.6.To be sure it isn't just that XFCE doesn't mount digital camera type devices, I tested it with an actual digital camera that plugs in via USB. Apr 5, 2011I have a luks-encrypted external drive with lvm on top. When I plug it in xfce prompts me (twice as usual) for the encryption phrase. Then, unlike when I have a regular file system on top and it automounts, I need to activate the volumes and manually mount. Is there a way to make these steps happen automatically?

Jan 25, 2011My goal is to prevent gnome from mounting and opening up a file browser when any device is plugged in (USB, CD/DVD) for a Desktop User account. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook RemixI modified several settings in Nautilus (Edit --> Preferences --> Media (tab). I Selected "Never prompt or start programs on media insertion" and unchecked "Browse media when inserted".I restarted the system, but when I plug in a USB mass storage device the file browser window still appears and the device is mounted.I dug down into gconf and found the following registry keys that I believe are of interest:
/apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount (unchecked)
/apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount_open (unchecked)
/apps/nautilus/preferences/media_autorun_never (checked)
Has anybody run into this problem and found a solution? Modifying the keys I mentioned above worked for everyone else that has asked the "disable automounting" question (that I've found). Some very old posts mentioned gnome-volume-manager, but it is not installed on my system.
EDIT:This seems to only happen when the Netbook Launcher is started. If Netbook Launcher is removed from the list of startup programs and the system is restarted, I can insert devices without getting a pop-up window and without the device being mounted.

May 12, 2010I've recently installed ubuntu 10.04 on a machine with MS Vista. Initially, I decided to use a fat32 partition (mounted at /windows) for storage of files used by both Ubuntu and Vista. Then, I saw that Ubuntu can read/write on NTFS partitions, so I deleted my fat32 disk space.
Now, Ubuntu tries to mount that partition and during the boot of the Gnome environment, it says that /windows cannot be mounted. If I press S (skip), the desktop can be loaded normally but I would like to delete all references to that partition.

Nov 20, 2010I have a simple usb mount problem, but after looking around, haven't been able to solve it. So far I've come across hal, dev, usbmount,pmount, and got lost in all this.
So, when I plug my usb as non-root I get that "not authorized" message. I solved this by installing usbmount package. After that, as non-root, usb mounts, but I can't write, I only have read rights. I tried changing "MOUNT OPTIONS" in usbmount.conf, but no luck.
What is the proper way of automounting usb and how to control access rights and what user can do what?
I also tried with fstab entries, but everytime I unplug my usb stick and plug it back in, /dev entry changes...

Aug 27, 2015I setup a luks encrypted /home partition on my Debian jessie, with an automount when my usb key containing the luks secret is plugged in at startup.
I did configure /etc/fstab so that my usb key be mounted at startup to /media/usb1, and /etc/crypttab to open my encrypted partition with the key at /media/usb1/homekey. It works.
However, when my usb key is not plugged in, boot fails and never shows welcome screen. I would change this behaviour so that when my usb is missing, boot resumes and do not mount /home partition. How could I manage this?

Debian :: Automount An Ext2 USB Disk ?
May 18, 2009I have recently bought a Toshiba 1TB external USB disk.
I have formatted it using gparted to ext2 and Debian see's it but gives me an error "unable to mount volume" with some extra stuff about programs shouldn't disconnect shared drives.
I can mount it ok by creating a folder called usbdisk and the mount command "mount -t ext2 /dev/sda1 /home/mike/usbdisk" and it works fine, but I have to do this everytime I start the machine.
Does anyone know what exactly I should put into a setup file to make the machine do this everytime , but only if its there.
As I'm not very clued up on bash scripting , I'm assuming it something along these lines:
How would I add this at boot?? Would I add it to the end of "init.d/rc" ?
