Fedora Networking :: Not All Computers Shown In Smbtree?

Apr 21, 2009

I have 5 or 6 computers on my home network. Most of them are wired connections, a few wireless. All the Linux machines run Samba and they are all configured identically. Workgroup name is the same on all, user=share on all and they all have a share or 2. I can ping any one from any other but they don't all show up when I run smbtree, usually from my wireless laptop. Maybe I should run it on all the Linux boxes and see what the result is, but I've never done that. My question is, why do they not all show up? One of them never shows in the list. The Windows boxes always do.

Networking :: Can't View List Of Shares In Nautilus But Can Browse Shares Directly?

Dec 11, 2008

I run opensuse 11 at work. I'm trying to see the list of shares on a "server" that is running windows server 2000. If I try smb://server, it doesn't show any shares, but I can browse directly to it such as smb://server/share1. If I use smbclient, it returns the list of shares correctly. I guess I just don't understand why smbclient shows the list of shared folders, but nautilus cannot.

General :: Administration - Managing SAMBA Shares And Giving User Specific Access For The Shares

Jul 28, 2010

I am working as a Linux administrator in a very small data centre with 5 servers with following routine tasks.

1. Managing SAMBA shares and giving user specific access for the shares.
2. Scheduling backup of some mount points with rsycn to store data in remote hard disk
3. User and group administration, with sudo access.
4. Creating and Managing Xen Virtual machines and giving access to other project teams.
5. Automating some tasks with Shell Scripting.
6. Managing FTP server for user uploads.

I have practiced a lot in my home laptop without RHEL training, Cleared RHCE and LPIC1. I want to do some advanced system admin tasks, but do not have option in my current data centre. With Above skills is it possible to get a job ?

General :: Cannot Connect To Samba Shares On Reinstalled Debian

Apr 27, 2010

I've reinstalled my debian file server - was running 4.0 and went for a clean 5.04 install.

Everything worked out well, system is running even more smoothly but I cannot connect to the shares.

I had backed up my smb.conf and put that one in place, the users are created + smbpasswd's are set.
Samba is running and yesterday (day of reinstall) I was able to connect without any problem but today I get a Quote:

Smbstatus shows that there has been a connection, the username is listed in /etc/passwd and I entered the password once again but no difference.

At first, I thought there was a problem with file/directory permissions but I have restored the data with rsync so those permissions are like before.

I have read quite some about setting up/configuring Samba and I guess it must have something to do with credentials but no clue to where to look anymore.

Debian Configuration :: Long Delay In Accessing SAMBA Shares

Jan 27, 2016

When I boot up, or come out of standby, etc, it takes about a minute for my Windows shares on Win 7 to show up under Network. Is there anything I can try that will make this initial connection faster? Either on Debian or the Win7 machine? I have the latest Debian vanilla. This is over wifi. My other devices list the shares right away.

Debian Multimedia :: Opening Windows Shares In XFCE (Thunar)

May 24, 2015

Another thing that's always worked before but now I'm struggling with in Jessie, if I open a smb:// url it just says "Not supported", is it possible to add support in Thunar? Some googling says to install gvfs but it is already installed, gvfs-open just says "command not found" though.

Strange thing is that I have tons of those little problems that seem to be regression since Wheezy but somehow I'm the only one hit heh. I actually think all the problems are caused by choosing "XFCE" on the installer because I can reproduce them 100% on any PC as long as I install XFCE, it's better to install entirely default (Gnome) and add xfce afterwards is my theory but I don't feel like reinstalling the whole system again.

Debian :: Setting Up Search And Mount Local Samba Shares?

Aug 1, 2010

I do know how to set up the traditional Window shares by modifying fstab and mkdir /mnt/share. What I was wondering in this day of laptops, if there was a script that could find and mount Window shares that were hooked into your local network, but only on a temporary bases. Something like what you would do mount a usb connection, such as a camera that you had the drivers for. I do know that networks are more complex, was just interested if something like that was developed yet. Just to let you know that my scripting skills are zero, and my ability to do so less.

Ubuntu :: XP To 9.10 Shares?

Feb 20, 2010

I can look at my XP files from my Wubi Karmic with no problems. It would seem with the mix of file systems on my hd that from XP I should see my Karmic shared files. What is up with this? It would be great to have "read/write" both ways.

Nautilus and Samba are running on my Karmic. What am I missing over on XP that precludes seeing my Karmic shared files?

OpenSUSE :: 11.2 With KDE 4.4.3 - Dolphin And NFS Shares

Jun 11, 2010

This is the set up
1. Server with ldap for authentication and autofs maps
2. Client machines have home directories on this server (nfs3) these machines also have some 'shared' directories on the same server (nfs4)

Now if I use a terminal I can always create files in the shared directories (subject to the relevant permissions) - I can also always save files in OO and the like. The problem is that Dophin sometimes has the create greyed out and sometimes it doesn't. So now I am at a loss as to why. This is 11.2 with kde 4.4.3 btw

Ubuntu :: NFS - Everything Looks Right But Shares Are Not Appearing?

Jan 6, 2011

I set up some shares but df and Nautilus aren't bringing them up on the other computer. I must be missing something.

Here is how I set up the shares on the one system - "Compaq".
Installed nfs-kernel-server
Modified the nts-common and nfs-kernel-server files:
STATDOPTS="--port 32765 --outgoing-port 32766"

[Code]....

I've also run rpcinfo on the ASUS system but with the IP address of Compaq, getting the same results. Which is good right?

I can ping back and forth. I've successfully run SSH on the ASUS machine from the Compaq machine. I'm not sure what to do now. Could this be a permissions issue? I'm using the fist user on each system.

Security :: NFS Shares Over Internet?

Apr 27, 2010

CentOS5.x We have a auto backup system that rsyncs all our vital data to a backup server over our network. The final step in this is to get the backup server to rsync with one of our remote sites for the off site backup. We have lately been visited by the boys from .ru and .ro due to good passwords we have managed to keep the visitor out of the network, we also changed out ssh port away from the default for better security.

We would like the backup system to be totally automatic, when I was reading up on the bruteforce attacks I read recommendations that we should have ssh that need passwords to be manually inserted for extra security. How secure is sharing NFS folders over the internet. we would configure only one host to have access to the share is this enough for us or should we think deeper here.

OpenSUSE :: Kde And Samba Shares - How To Mount

Feb 25, 2011

From Konqueror/Dolphin is possible to access samba shares. If your computer is joined to a Active Directory domain and you use a domain user, you can access samba shares with smb://server.domain/share and you are not ask for user/pass (you use a kerberos tiquet). Kde programs as Amarok, K3b, ... can access files in samba shares without problem. But other programs, specially gnome programs (including the popular OpenOffice), are unable to use files in a samba share. If instead of using Konqueror/dolphin you use Nautilus, there is no problem because it maps the share to a local folder ($HOME/.gvfs/share in sever/) and the program are able to access files in samba shares without problems as the folder is mounted locally (as if you use cifs.mount). Its a problem to use konqueror/dolphin and have to change to nautilus to access samba shares.

If you use Windows you can mount it in an easy way. That's what I try to do from konqueror, not having to open a konsole and be able to mount the share in an easy way. I've tried with smb4k, but is has not worked for me (tried in 2 OpenSuse 11.3 and 1 opensuse 11.2). What Nautilus does when accessing a samba shares like smb://server.domain.dom/share is to execute the command: [URL]... What I try is to do the same, but just form Konqueror/Dolphin. I'd like to add a button to Konqueror/dolphin that pressing the button and if the URL points to a samba share, the share is mounted in $HOME/LocalNetwork/server/share. As I say, it can be as easy as executing the gvfs-mount, but don't know how.
