i seem to be having some issues with update-manager. all has been well for months since i installed etch. now, when i try to do an update, i get the error message :
W: Unbalanced action groups, expect badness [CRITICAL:UpdateManager.Backend.PythonApt] BrokenCount > 0 (1)! not sure where to go from here, i trawled some forums for an answer and tried : sudo dpkg --clear-avail && sudo apt-get update and : sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/available to no avail. here's a copy of my sources.list just in case [URL]
I got this message after Updating Ubuntu in the Update Manager,"Could not initialize the package informationAn unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:'E:Read error - read (5: Input/output error), E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' "Also when I open it it says your running on battery, I got 5 hours left of battery life, could that be a problem?
Whilst I've been using Ubuntu for years now, I don't really do much at the command-line, basically because I don't *have* to (which, to me is the beauty of this OS!). However, the last update via update manager has rendered my dual-boot with Vista on an Asus laptop non-functioning (at least Linux). What happens is this: after the BIOS splash screen, it says starting GRUB and then, instead of a menu of current and recent Linux versions and the Vista option at the bottom (white text against colour background) it now just shows one line of the menu in magenta... the rest of the menu is black, but the arrow keys will show the other options. Hitting ENTER does nothing: the text line is replaced with a blinking underline which goes back to the text in magenta again when i hit ESC. I can't seem to ESC or SHIFT to GRUB's command-line prompt at all. I've boot to the LiveCD and ran a boot_info_script in bash: here is what that revealed:
Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 ============================= Boot Info Summary: ============================== => Syslinux is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda => Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb
I do not know if this is really something I should worry about. I am running Debian testing on my laptop (HP Pavillon dv6). Today, the aptitude update---aptitude upgrade gave me a new kernel (2.6.39). However, if I boot with that kernel, I get a warning (do not know if that is the way I should call this) telling me that the machine failed to get the i915 symbols so turbo graphics will be disabled.I have not done any serious test, but at first sight I do not notice any difference performance-wise with respect to the previous kernel. what am I supposed to do to fix this?
I am trying to make a script that can be used to check server load on a remote server and produces sound on our local machine, when server load exceeds a particular limit.1. I want to execute command uptime or uptime | awk '{print$10}'on the remote server and store the result in a variable(say x), and later use it in the bash script.
I'm trying to Use Expect to automate a curl function. basically I don't want to type enter for my script to run. Can anyone point me to a good Expect tutorial?
I am writing an expect script. At a certain point there is a rule that produces this debugging output:
Code:
expect: does " Address or name of remote host [x.x.x.x]? " (spawn_id exp8) match glob pattern " Address or name of remote host [x.x.x.x]? "? no This just times out When I use -exact for the expect keyword it does work What am I doing wrong? THe first should also match in my opinion because it is equal as well. Even if I remove the I still have the same issue if I try without -exact. I don't understand. I tried removing the but still got the same.
i seem to have encountered a problem with thunar since upgrading gtk2. about once every fortnight i'll do an apt-get update/upgrade. today a lot of gtk2 libs were upgraded. ever since thunar won't recognise mouse clicks to open any folders in the detailed view, and i'm not entirely sure how or if i can roll back the packages with apt. synaptic won't let me force versions. running squeeze 64 bit btw.
I am having issues with Update Manager after cancelling an Update. The Update Manager shows a number of required updates, but when I click on Install Updates... Nothing happensWhen I launch sudo dpkg --configure -a in a terminal I receive the following message:dpkg: status database area is locked by another process. On another forum i saw something regarding a gksu.lock file that needed to be deleted... but I can't find any such file....If I try to launch update manager via a terminal: sudo update-manager I get the following error:
requiredDownload could not be calculated: E:Unable to parse package file /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_karmic-updates_main_binary-amd64_Packages (2), E:Unable to parse package file /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_karmic-updates_main_binary-amd64_Packages (1), E:Unable to parse package file /var/lib/apt/lists
i've been experimenting with trying to run games via wine (i don't have windows to do a dual boot with), and i just recently tried to open up a dvd in vlc, and... trouble. it works, but now the player "squishes" the widescreen image into a traditional "tv screen" box. even when do it in fullscreen, it just fills the screen with black and plops the "squished" image in the middle of it. i've watched downloaded mp4 images i got off videos like this, and they look fine, but they're not widescreen images. i'm sure there's something really simple somewhere i gotta fix
I can't run the update-manager.When I run the Update Manager, it starts to check and then gets"A fatal error has been detected in the update-manager. Do you want to submit a bug report? Selecting No will close the application."What should I do now? Should I reinstall the update-manager? How do I do that?
Before you answer I am just curious about this. I certainly would never do this nor recommend it. However because I have never tried this I was curious if it actually would happen. At the end of Lenny, would it pop up in the update-manager-gnome that a new release "Squeeze" is available? I am just curious.
Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit I have not been able to update using the update manager or by using the package manager. It seems when the update manager tries to download all the requests fail.Anyone else had this problem??
Wheezy gets daily small updates.General things go smoothly - get the notification and install, job done.By occasionally it stalls - it says do partial or full updates and just sits there. For last week this persistent problem.Only way around is boot up and do manual update before notification kicks. As I type the update manager is sitting there doing nothing. Another reboot needed.
When I try to update from a Debian notification of new updates the update window freezes without showing the updates. When I try to update in a terminal, I get the following message: "Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?". If another process is using it, I know nothing about it. How do I solve this problem?
I've installed the GNOME Update Manager (0.68-debian.7) from the official Debian package archive. However, after checking for new packages and clicking "Install the updates", the update manager asks for rights and then just checks for new updates again. Selecting different packages didn't help either, it just checks for updates again and doesn't update anything. Has anyone experienced the same problem
I just installed Debian (Stable, 5.0.6) for the first time. I had some troubles related to the installation of network and nvidia drivers, but now the system seems to work pretty well. The only problem i'm having is that when I try to use tools like the graphic update or the graphic packet manager, or the graphic tool for adding/removing software, after I write the password they ask me, they freeze, but still seem keeping loading something, as the cursor usually keeps turning, and, on the lower bar of Gnome, something like "Granting rights..." appears (i've the italian version so i don't know if i'm translating well or not). Sometime they freeze before the request of authentication and then nothing happens, sometime they simply don't start. Also, sometime the update manager starts but freezes when i click on the button that checks for new updates.Maybe it could be useful for you to know that I installed the 2.6.32-bpo.5-amd64 kernel because my network had problems with the 2.6.26-2-amd64, could this be a problem? i also installed the last Nvidia drivers, and i think nothing more, just the system updates from the stable repositories.
I have used Debian on this computer for over a year now. A little while back update manager stopped working. It now prompts me to update a varying number of packages (85-97), but when I try and run it I get this message:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I'm not sure where to report this. I'm the only user of this computer. I tried running dpkg as directed, but that results in the following:
shop-amd-rebuild:/home/steve# dpkg --configure -a Setting up linux-image-2.6.26-2-amd64 (2.6.26-26lenny1) ... Running depmod. Running mkinitramfs-kpkg.
So far I have just used the CLI to upgrade KDE, and I get notified of upgrades once a day, where a popup shows when new upgrades are available. However, when I push the "install upgrades" button, nothing happens. In Gnome, all I had to do was click the update notifier and click install. I am pretty confident the same is posible in KDE4. I have searched the web trying to find a solution, but I can't find anything. I am probably missing some packages. Can someone help me configure:
1. Update intervals for the KDE update manager, and 2. GUI updates for the KDE4 desktop.
I recently installed an ATI graphics card driver (fglrx) and ran the aticonfig --initial program/option, which makes the necessary changes to xorg.conf for the user.
My original problem was that all of my font sizes were changed (far too small to even read). I found a temporary way around this by simply increasing the sizes in the gnome appearance properties, but the problem is there is no option to change the size of text that appears in editable fields. For example, simple text-line entry widgets in various applications appear very small (as well as the default text size in icedove mail). Trying to use openoffice.org Writer or Calc also gives the same results. It seems directly related to the sizes of "editable fields" (things like my text editor - gedit- appear to be fine, as well as my terminal). I'm guessing this could have something to do with my xorg.conf, but I've looked through the file and don't know what to change, or where else I could look. If it helps at all, I have most of my font sizes now (in gnome) set to 14, but they appear as 12.
I'm not sure exactly why this is happening, but I need some help in getting some of this text readable again. Please see the attached screenshot of a blank Calc spreadsheet, and it might shed some light on this. You might also notice that in the screenshot, the default font size is 10, but if I change this to 12, and then load it on say, a Windows computer, the text will appear to be much larger than a 12. I'll also include my xorg.conf, in case that has anything to do with it.
I am running debian squeeze amd64 i am having trouble with the internet is running real slow on iceweasel ,and update manager freezes when is updating how can i improve this.
Since update-manager was removed from Debian Jessie, I am looking for something similar or a way to install update-manager for 8.2. I would like a GUI.
I have tried gnome-packagekit, but some of the commands don't appear to work or it seems incomplete and I don't know of a way to test to make sure that it is working.
Other sites recommended to use smartpm. However, I cannot seem to find the plugin xfce4-smartpm-plugin in [Xfce Goodies] that would work as a notifier.
Unattended-upgrades does not meet my specifications, because to my knowledge there is no GUI configuration for this.
Though Debian Jessie is a great distro, I am finding it difficult to recommend to some newer users because it does lack a GUI updater/notifier at this time.
I migrated to Debian sid, but since then I got this error everytime I launch Update Manager (whether it's in graphical mode or from a shell). Just after putting down my root password, I got this error:
Title of the window: (as superuser) A fatal error has been detected in update-manager. Do you want to submit a bug report? Selecting No will close the application. Whether I click Yes or No, nothing happens.
[rant]Ok, I've been ignoring this for a couple of months, but now it's gotten to me and I want to know what's causing it.[/rant] Here's my problem. I have scim 1.4-9 (latest) installed for Japanese input. It works fine. I have no problems with it. However, when I launch Synaptic or update manager a duplicate instance of scim starts. This is on Debian Squeeze. See below:
B scim-bridge 34.2MIB scim-bridge 34.2MIB B scim-helper-manager 32.7MIB scim-helper-manager 32.8MIB
[code].....
It's not a huge deal, because when I close said programs, the duplicate process stop. I just find it odd because these are the only two programs that seem to cause it. Oh, and I'm using Gnome, if that matters.
I have just updated my Squeeze system. The update included a newer version of network-manager (and it can not be more than a few hours old). After the update all network functionality on my machine (via knetwork-manager) is broken. The GUI applet has no effect.
Hence can anyone help me: a) Downgrade network-manager by one version; b) Find out what is causing knetworkmanager to break; c) See if the problem is with knetworkmanager or network-manager.
I am currently using Debian Testing, managing my wireless connection with NetworkManager and the Gnome nm-applet. Both have just been updated: network-manager from 0.8.1-6+squeeze1 to 0.8.2-6 and network-manager-gnome from 0.8.1-2 to 0.8.2-4.On installation of the new packages, I have no problems. However, on a reboot, I can no-longer connect to any wireless connection. I am not prompted on start-up for the password to unlock the Gnome keyring and when I left-click on the nm-applet icon and then click on a network to connect to it, nothing happens.I do not think this is a driver or NetworkManager daemon problem. If I run "nmcli dev wifi" or left-click on the applet icon, NetworkManager seems to scan for wireless networks properly and returns a list including the one I wish to connect to.
I already know of a work around to fix this problem, but I guess my question is why is this not working as expected? I am using a Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory for authentication.
I have run auth-client-config for the ldap profile and pam-auth-update. When running getent passwd, I get a list of both the local users and the users in the active directory (with populated information in the Unix schema extension). When running getent group I get a list of both the local groups and the groups in the active directory (with populated information in the Unix schema extension).
Interestingly enough, though, when I run su DOMAINUSER, after the prompt for the password I get an authentication error. In /var/log/auth.log I can see an entry with pam_ldap: missing "host" in file "/etc/ldap.conf". The SRV records in the DNS servers resolve correctly. I've checked this with nslookup and I have seen the records within my zone file. Obviously if the ldap.conf file is working with getent and the ldap server is resolving from the SRV records, it is working fine.
The interesting part is that the Windows Server 2008 R2 AD machine shows in the event viewer that there was a successful authentication, yet the Ubuntu box says no. When I add the host within the ldap.conf file, everything works...getent and the actual authentication, either initial login or su.
I am currently trying to set up a Samba domain server. In the Samba-HOWTO-Collection I found an example file.(Point 3.3.3.1) In the explanations of the example below, the author says I need to map UNIX Groups to NT Groups. He writes a shell-script of how one could do it, but when I copy it and then execute it, I get the error:
Bad option: rid=512 Bad option: rid=513 Bad option: rid=514
The other groups do get mapped, just the Domain Admins, Domain Users and Domain Guests dont. This is the shell from the HOWTO:
#!/bin/bash #### Shell-Skript f ̈r sp ̈tere Verwendung aufbewahren net groupmap modify ntgroup="Domain Admins" unixgroup=ntadmins rid=512 net groupmap modify ntgroup="Domain Users" unixgroup=users rid=513 net groupmap modify ntgroup="Domain Guests" unixgroup=nobody rid=514
