Debian :: Way To Ask Questions About Programs

Jan 4, 2011

In the Ubuntu Repository there is a way to ask questions about programs. Is there something similar with Debian? Or another way to get help with programs? I attached a screenshot to help you get an idea of what I am talking about.

OpenSUSE :: Some KDE 4.4.2 Questions On Suse11.2?

Mar 31, 2010

today I upgraded my 11.2 system to KDE 4.4.2. Basically this works. However there are two questions I was not yet able to find a useful answer for:

- 4.4.2 offer strigi desktop search. The index process started and probably did its job but how can I start a search. I found a hint that dolphin can be used, but here I do not find any Menu entry that opens a search dialog (except for the standard file search window). What I found was settings->Toolbar and there I could add a search bar into dolphins toolbar. However this search bar only appears in this one window, if I close it and open a new dolphin window it will not appear again (probably a bug). Any other way to start a strigi based desktop search?

- Again in dolphin I sometimes see strange folder icons for the folders in my home directory. Basically this is the default folder icon and after waiting a while all the icons change in that inside the regular folder icon a gray rectangle is displayed a the lower left side. No idea what this is good for. I goes away if I reload the folders content and then again after a while those strange icon appears again. It does however not appear for folders in eg /tmp only for /home which is on my system a NFS mounted filesystem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Questions Regarding Upgrade To 64 Bit.

Jul 13, 2011

What issues are there with 64 bit? I have done some research, but while there has been some mention of issues I can't seem to find any posts listing them. My desktop is currently running Maverick 32 bit, and I would like to upgrade to 64 bit. I have 4gb ram and 768 mb video ram, and conky only lists 2.74gb when queried. I would like to be able to address all memory so I can run Windows in Virtualbox, but my current install runs well.

Any help is appreciated.

Fedora :: Software Update Not User Friendly - Questions

Jan 12, 2010

I do not understand Software Update. I've been using Fedora for about three months now and I've used the software update a few times. This time it tells me I have 3.1 G of updates! When I select a few that might fix current problems, the only app status is "loading"--no progress bars, or status messages. In fairness, the previous updates ran without incident. This time with 3G I was forced to manage the session and I can't tell if its working or not. Is it hanging with this message?

I canceled that download and did it again selecting 8 updates. But when I compared the reported file sizes (< 5MB) and the summary at the bottom ( >270MB) there was a huge difference --50 times more data! Are these dependencies?

I'm really not even sure how to go about selecting from 3.1 G security updates (1G), Bugs, and whatever else. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Server :: Nagios - Advanced Notifications Configuration Questions

Oct 30, 2010

I'm working hard with Nagios 3.0.4 on Debian Lenny. I have some questions. I can't find any information about these issues. I have hosts with a first_notification_delay of 60 minutes. And I have the whole day a Nagios controlling the same hosts. It's good to know if the same host is turned on during the night, but my work period begins at 10:00 am and it finish at 22:00 pm, I'm not a lucky boy I have configured a notification Period to 10:00 am to 22:00 pm.

Question 1: If a host goes into hard state CRITICAL, I know that Nagios waits 60 minutes to send a notification, but What happens if the host recovers before the first_notification_delay period ( for example, 30 min before)?Does it send the recovery notification or not?

Question 2: If a hard state happens at 21:59. Does Nagios wait until the 10:00 am of the day after to send the notification? If the host recovers at 9:00 am of the day after is the notification message cancelled?

Slackware :: Fluxbox + Cairo-compmgr Questions About Transparency?

May 25, 2011

ive used openbox for quite some time, but recently decided to make the switch to fluxbox. i have gotten everything up and running except for true transparency. i have seen screenshots in which this works, but i have not been able to duplicate the results.

in openbox, all i had to do was run cairo-compmgr at startup and my terminals were automatically transparent, and all the window effects i selected with cairo-compmgr were applied when i chose them. in fluxbox, i run cairo-compmgr, it starts up fine, and i know its running because i can use it's transparency settings to set whole windows to alpha (super + mouse scrolling), and the little "tab" buttons that fluxbox has have shadow effects drawn on them. the actual windows, however are not effected by cairo-compmgr running in the slightest. the windows themselves dont have shadows, and my terminals do not use transparency at all. even my xchat notifications have black boxes around them because not transparency is being used.

Does the document have to be a certain kind? Debian Configuration :: How To Best Manage Partitioning When Install Programs Not From Debian Repositories

Dec 4, 2010

How to best manage partitioning when install programs not from debian repositories?I just discovered that Debian installs applications not from repositories to /opt and /lib. Both directories or folders reside in root (/) partition.Having made my root (/) partition (which is only around 500MB) -- more than sufficient for holding a couple of linux images but NOT good for holding application. What is the best solution for resolving this? It's annoying and worrying that my system always reminds of a close to full capacity root partition.

Debian :: How To Switch Between Programs

May 25, 2011

I recently got a server up, and there's Debian on it. Text-based debian, no GUI. And i quitte like it, but i have one problem. In windows i can start program a, minimalize it and then start program b. But lets say i create a program with an infitite loop that only prints hello world on my debian server, I can't do anything else while its running, i have to press ctrl+c to be able to do something else. So my question is: is there a way to "minimalize" my self-written program to do something else, while its running, and to switch back later?

Debian :: Outdated Programs In Repository?

Feb 25, 2011

I've been always curious why I have old versions of my software in my Debian's repository. As examples I checked my Apache, PHP and Octave versions. Each of them is outdated (Apache 2.2.16, newest is 2.2.17 | PHP 5.3.3-7 - newest is 5.3.5 | Octave 3.2.4 - newst is 3.4)! When I had Ubuntu there were always upgrades to the newest possible version. Actually I had really fewer problems with Ubuntu. ;/

How I can fix it?

Debian Multimedia :: Can't Open Any Programs On X (i3)

Feb 18, 2016

I use gdm3, Debian Jessie (Not sure if 8.2 or 8.3, I did a dist-upgrade so maybe 8.3), and i3-wm.

I went to shower and came back to find my hard drive full due to the syslog and daemon log being filled with 76GB each worth of the same 7-line error message about NetworkManager and wpa_supplicant. (Earlier that day the 80% of my CPU was being consumed by those two, and my battery life fell from 7 hours to 2 hours)

After I shortened those log files to 700 and 1200 lines, and I rebooted and then logged into i3, I found that I couldn't open any graphical programs, except Emacs24, Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft, Minitube, and Wireshark. I also noticed that the log files that I shortened have disappeared, so I cannot recover the 7-line error message.

I haven't tried all the graphical programs that I have, but Terminator, Pidgin, Hamster Time Tracker, Iceweasel, and gnome-terminal will not open (although Emacs24, Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft, Minitube, and Wireshark will, and NetworkManager seems unaffected as well). By "won't open" I mean that when I run the programs from dmenu or any Emacs shell (eshell, shell, ansi-term), the process runs (as visible in ps aux), but it does not show up in i3. Pidgin and Hamster Time Tracker will reserve space in the i3bar, but it doesn't get populated.

I haven't extensively tested what happens in Gnome3, but I have noticed that I can't open the activities overlay.

Debian :: SOund Working In Some Programs But Not Others

Nov 19, 2010

After the latest update in testing, I found sound not to be working. I checked system config in KDE and found the wrong sound card set there. I changed it to the correct sound card, sound now works in some programs and not others (IE, Dragon Player and Amarok have sound, Kaffeine and Iceweasel do not).Sound does not work through the on board sound card.System beep sounds (through the onboard speaker) also fail to work.I've had similar problems in the past due to the inability to turn off the onboard sound, alsaconf has always fixed them, however debian has removed alsaconf from alsa-utils.

Debian :: Programs Open With (Blacked Out) Windows?

Aug 10, 2015

Long story short, been using Debian for 2+ years. Recently did a Clean install of Jessie (which worked fine). I wanted to test out Ubuntu 14.04 so I distro hopped for a couple weeks. Now I'm back on Debian Jessie (did a clean install again).

Problem is: Everything works fine, but after the computer runs for a while (like 2+ hours) any new program windows that I open are completely blacked out. Just like opening a big square black tile. They are unusable until I restart the computer, then everything works fine again for another 2+ hours.

I've never had this problem before, not even with my previous clean installation of Jessie. This time I installed it in the same way that I did the last time.

Debian :: Save On CD D/loaded Programs For Later Installs?

Apr 17, 2011

On top of the what's installed from the Debian 6.01 live CD I add the secuirty updates and a small number of programs (Audacity, OpenShot, AbiWord, get_iplayer, ripit and SMPlayer). Because at present while in a phase of distro-hopping I tend to fiddle a bit with new distros and reinstall them more often than spend time undoing a more complex mess, can the added programs be stored so that they don't need to be downloaded again,o the dependencies complicate this or make it impossible? I'm imagining hopefully some folder of .deb files that exist after downloading that I can put on a CD for repeated use. Sorry if I'm being naive.

If this can be done, a jargon-free set of steps would be much appreciated. I use Mobile Broadband with a low monthly limit so it will help. Though I forget the method now, I did once when using Linux Mint use some 'script' that would enable me to put programs on a CD to download at my parents' home when I had no internet, but it was hit and miss it seemed, with missing dependencies galore.

Debian Installation :: 8.3.0 Jessie - Some Programs Don't Open

Feb 27, 2016

I have a new installation of Debian 8.3.0 Jessie which I have been playing with and enjoying for a couple of weeks. Ever since I installed the operating system to my computer, I have noticed a few different programs just won't open. For example Nepomuk Back Up and Nepomuk Cleaner. I do not know if these programs shipped with the original installation or if they got installed with a package later, but when I try to open these applications the ball just bounces for a minute then disappears. I went to my package manager and uninstalled these applications and then reinstalled them, but there has been no change in behavior. Gparted also does the same thing, but with Gparted the little ball bounces for quite awhile before it disappears.

Debian :: Certain Programs Like Apt Refuse To Recognize Symlinks

Jul 6, 2015

This system was first installed on a 120Gb dual booted hard drive with Debian split with XP. It grew into a development system spanning 3 drives and 360Gb.

The addition drives were NOT mounted under the standard unix conventions, such as sdb being /usr and sdc being /home. They are mounted as /drive1, /drive2. All ext4 (except for the /dev/sda1 XP partition).

For example opt is symlinked to /drive1/opt

Firefox is at /drive1/opt/firefox.

So far so good, and with 20,000 packages installed, the system does work. With however, some caveats.

Certain programs like apt, refuse to recognize symlinks. I cannot move its /archives to the other drives. Some other stuff seem equally recalcitrant. Especially stuff from the lower init levels (that is understandable as they are running before the mounting process).

But others are unexpectedly recalcitrant.

Is there any way to *force* systemwide respect for symlinks?

Reducing size of XP is a non-starter here...

Debian Multimedia :: No Programs Start In Gnome?

Jul 1, 2010

Linux noob here with a very fresh Debian 5.04 install. Not sure if this is the correct board for this but here goes;*No* programs start in X. Terminal, System Monitor, Epiphany, Gedit, Synaptic Package Manager... They all fail to start. The programs try to start for 15 seconds after which they give up. For example, if I press the Epiphany-icon in the panel I see "Starting Epiphany We..." in the lower-left corner and the mouse cursor changes to the loading animation for 15 seconds but then after that nothing happens and the "Starting Epiphany We..."-icon disappears. I have two users (plus root of course) and the same thing happens with both accounts.

I can start the icons I have on my desktop (Computer, Home folder, Trash and Downloads) and I can Lock the screen/log off/shut down but that's about it. Oh and one more thing; sometimes when I log in everything works just fine, so this whole thing seems a bit random.

General :: Debian APT-Get - Can't Retrieve/install Any Programs

Jan 13, 2011

I am on Debian/Tor/Vidalia environment and I am thoroughly confused as to what the Apt-get engine does. To put it simply, I landed on Debian because I heard that Torrent-downloading stuff via an external application such as U Torrents does no longer guarantee anonymity, even with a Tor proxy server. So I got into the Amnesia CD stuff, after burning the ISO image on CD. I was hoping then to be able to install U Torrents on Debian and carry out the U Torrents downloads from within the Debian shield.

I did download U Torrents but I was unable to install it from the .exe file. Then I heard that programs can be installed in Debian only via a special APT-get engine. My understanding was that by running the" APT-get" engine in the CMD( Terminal) screen, I'd be able to access the softwares I wanted to install, such as U Torrents..

Unfortunately, when I run the " Apt-get" engine with the script " Apt-get Install + software name, " I get a " no packages found" answer. I searched for Bit Torrents, Azureus, U Torrents and a host of other common softwares, to no avail.. None is there. I even got to the APT-get.org site. THere I did find hundreds of repositories and packages , but I haven't the slightest clue as to what they contain. This database is not searchable by software name, so I don't know if and where my software is there.
