Debian :: Certain Programs Like Apt Refuse To Recognize Symlinks

Jul 6, 2015

This system was first installed on a 120Gb dual booted hard drive with Debian split with XP. It grew into a development system spanning 3 drives and 360Gb.

The addition drives were NOT mounted under the standard unix conventions, such as sdb being /usr and sdc being /home. They are mounted as /drive1, /drive2. All ext4 (except for the /dev/sda1 XP partition).

For example opt is symlinked to /drive1/opt

Firefox is at /drive1/opt/firefox.

So far so good, and with 20,000 packages installed, the system does work. With however, some caveats.

Certain programs like apt, refuse to recognize symlinks. I cannot move its /archives to the other drives. Some other stuff seem equally recalcitrant. Especially stuff from the lower init levels (that is understandable as they are running before the mounting process).

But others are unexpectedly recalcitrant.

Is there any way to *force* systemwide respect for symlinks?

Reducing size of XP is a non-starter here...

Ubuntu :: Synaptic Does Not Recognize Password & Add/remove Programs Not Showing Up?

Feb 3, 2010

I've just did a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.10 x86 in a 4 gig pendrive.Just one ext4 partition for / and /home and a swap partition. Only one user created during installation.Everything's fine so far except for two things:-If I launch synaptic from the start menu, it asks for my password which I type in or even copy-paste to be sure.Strangely it always comes back saying incorrect password. If I open a terminal and call "sudo synaptic" and type in my password when prompted, the application shows up fine. Again if I do the same via the Run dialog (alt+F2), that is "sudo synaptic", nothing comes up. If I just type "synaptic", a pop up says that as a user I won't be able to install anything and blah-blah, and the application displays properly

Ubuntu :: Several 64 Bit Distros Refuse To Boot?

Jan 4, 2010

I recently bought a new laptop (Clevo W760CU) and I've tried several times running 64 bits distros on it. Both Ubuntu 9.10 and Fedora 12 live cd's simply won't boot into X. They both seem to freeze at the very ending of the loading process. 32-bit releases of both work fine. Using the alternate install CD I managed to install 9.10 but when I try to boot it freezes immediately after the cursor appears (which I assume is equivalent to where the live cd's freeze). If I try recovery mode I can see the following error:

[ time ] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#4 stuck for 61s! [some program]

Where and which program it is varies. I've managed to install Archlinux and Windows 7 fine, both 64-bits. I haven't been able to update Arch yet because it wont't find my network card, as with Fedora 11 and 9.04 both of which install perfectly fine). It seems the kernels released in October or later cause my problems How can I fix this? I really want to be running 9.10 64 bit because I have 4 GB of RAM.

Programming :: Close A Socket And Refuse Waiting Connections?

Jan 4, 2010

i've written a socket server. when i launch a client, it connects to servers running on various machines on my local network, which then reply to the client with some string messages, and the client exits.

however, when i launch the client repeatedly (say 5 or 6 times in quick succession) the client is unable to bind to its local port. this appears to be because servers are still trying to connect to the client machine's port, even though the client exited and shut the socket down. the actual error i receive is "Error binding socket to 192.168.1.6:44561: Address already in use".

so, is it enough just to shutdown and close a socket? is there some way that in doing so the client machine can send a CONNECTION_REFUSED message to any machine trying to connect to it? i am using PHP, not that that should make much of a difference i hope.

the problem resolves itself after around 20 seconds as the machines trying to connect to the client timeout. i still need to fix this issue though.

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Refuse Accessing Parent Directory In FTP Client Program

Feb 18, 2010

I am runnung ubuntu 9.10 desktop edition as a server. I am using a FTP client program to upload some files(index.html, background.png, etc) and everything is fine with that. And currently all my files are in /home/myname/ folder. What I want is whenever I log in with my ubuntu account in the FTP client program, I can actually see the list or contents of the very root directory.

In other word, I can see every folder like /bin, /boot, /etc, /root, so on in the FTP software and I can download it. I don't want to allow to access the parent(or root) directory. Is there any possible way to set up the sutff?

Slackware :: Nvidia Driver Package Refuse To Cooperate With Kernel Sources?

Aug 3, 2010

I'm using Slackware 13.0 on rather old PC with old Riva TNT2 video card. Default driver is "nv". Everything work fine, but without hardware 2D acceleration under X.

After studying various manuals I
1. downloaded Nvidia binary package suitable for my video card.
2. Recompile kernel without Riva framebuffer support.
3. Start Nvidia script.

Script said: "Error: unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured...""

Kernel sources are in /usr/src/linux-2.6.29.6 I have all kernel packages installed. I was trying various switches for script in order to show the right path - nothing! 8 Some people say that Nvidia script don't like 4th digit in a kernel's name and get it from "uname -r" output. Can I change it somehow?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Random Flash/Shockwave Objects Refuse To Work In Firefox

Jan 6, 2010

i run ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, using firefox 3.5.6 (courtesy of ubuntuzilla) as my web browser. i've had a problem with some flash and/or shockwave objects simply refusing to work inside firefox, despite having 64-bit flash player and all necessary plugins/addons/extras etc. installed.

there is no pattern to the problems, other than all of them being flash or shockwave objects that won't play. the majority of videos videos do play, including hd ones. however, this morning i encountered a pair of videos clips that simply would not play. i could load the page they were on, but all i ever saw was a black box, with no audio, where the video should have been.

i also noticed that on some of the videos that do play, the flash player's built-in volume control does nothing. i can slide it up or down or mute it entirely, but the sound from the flash video is unaffected.

i'll post urls of the problem videos later, so others can try them.

meanwhile i was able to watch other videos videos without issue, on another tab, aside from the broken flash player volume control.

i've also had a problem with the [url] player for a radio station, which i believe uses shockwave. i like to listen to atlanta, ga's wsb 750 am radio in the mornings before work, but so far i have to do it on a virtual windows xp machine running firefox 3.5.6, under virtualbox. if i try to open the player in firefox 3.5.6 running in the host os (ubuntu 9.10), i get only a blank popup window. url is [url]; click the "listen live" box at upper left to try it.

both machines, the host ubuntu 9.10 install and the guest windows xp machine, use exactly the same ad-blocking hosts file. i use the noscript addon in the host os install of firefox, but i allow any and all scripts when visiting the radio station's website.

since the streaming radio works on the virtual xp machine, i'm pretty sure my network configuration, hosts file etc. have nothing to do with this.

has anyone else had this problem? the flash content really should be agnostic with respect to the host os and browser, shouldn't it?

i guess it could be some random problem with the 64-bit vs. the 32-bit version of the flash plugin, so i may try instaling 32-bit ubuntu on a virtual machine to find out whether there's a difference.

Debian Configuration :: How To Best Manage Partitioning When Install Programs Not From Debian Repositories

Dec 4, 2010

How to best manage partitioning when install programs not from debian repositories?I just discovered that Debian installs applications not from repositories to /opt and /lib. Both directories or folders reside in root (/) partition.Having made my root (/) partition (which is only around 500MB) -- more than sufficient for holding a couple of linux images but NOT good for holding application. What is the best solution for resolving this? It's annoying and worrying that my system always reminds of a close to full capacity root partition.

Debian Installation :: Did Not Recognize Internet

Nov 1, 2015

I recently installed Debian using the net install file through USB on my Lenovo z510 laptop. It did not recognize my internet so I continued my installation without it and ended up with a bare bones command prompt version of Debian. So to uninstall it I just deleted the partition and took up the space with Windows 10. So now when I boot into the boot list(uefi) I still see Debian listed, and when I boot into it I see grub-rescue command prompt. Now I downloaded the live Debian ISO and used pendrivelinux to put it on. When I look in my boot list the USB does not appear and USB booting is on + Secure boot is off. What should I do to fix this mess? In the end I want Debian dual-booted with windows 10 with Debian being with the GNOME 3.x desktop environment.

I just got a new server dedicated running php5 and SUExec. I understand the concept. INstead of running as "nobody", PHP scripts run as the user of that website. This also means I don't have to have some special directory where I set permissions to 775 or 770 with group=nobody etc just to upload files via PHP .. since PHP will upload files just as the user would using FTP. OK, great so far, and more security, I'm all for it.

Software :: Symlinks Not Updating

Not sure what else to call it. My softlinks are not updating to reflect the parent/linked folder-files.

Code:
ln -s /folder/* /home/user/Music
This produces what I want. However, if I make any changes to /folder/, I dont see a reflected change in the links at /home/usr/Music.

A added plus would be to be able to use folder/file thumbnails from the source directory on the symlinks. Are sym links just shortcuts or are they real links to the directory (dynamic).

Fedora :: Coverting Symlinks To Hardlinks

Aug 11, 2011

I'm wondering if there is a safe and reliable way of converting symlinks to directories to hardlinks? Basically I have a bunch of files in a directory tree under directory A, and I have in another directory B a set of symlinks to the original site. I would like all the files to end up in B and A to be empty. The links are all to directories, not to files, so the soft2hard script here won't work.

I don't have enough free diskspace to copy the files from A to B so I thought that converting the softlinks to hard links and then removing directory A would work? There are many directories, so would like to do it automatically if at all possible.

(In case anyone is intrigued, the issue is with my maildir directory. I used to use kmail, but with the move to kmail2 it became buggy and virtually unusable with large amounts of mail and I had to find another solution. I now use dovecot with gnus and mutt as MUA to access the maildirs. kmails maildirs are non-standard (!), so with the help of a script I found online, I created ~/dovecot and in it put symlinks to all the maldirs under ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail. The problem with this is if I accidentally start kmail it will try to access that directory and mess up all my tags, so I want to completely move all my mail from ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail to ~/dovecot, but without messing up all my tags etc.)

Ubuntu :: How To Find And Clean Old Symlinks?

Mar 2, 2010

I recently tried the package "pysdm" to mount a data partition but didn't care for the way it handled things so I opted for editing fstab which I'm much more satisfied with.I did then purge pysdem and it's config files but something lingered, finally I got things working by using a UUID designation in fstab but I know there's an old symlink to a /dev/sdb7 that has since been deleted and later recreated with a new UUID.

I have "googled" enough to find that the package "fslint" should be able to handle this but since one gui got me in trouble I'm reluctant to use another, I'd prefer just being able to find where symlinks live and ripping them out by the short hairs

I didn't grasp that Wine had created some kind of hard links to my ~ folder on my Ubuntu box. Since that folder is clearly recursively linking to all my files, I'm afraid to just delete it.
