Ubuntu :: Control-c - Control-v - Copy And Paste Functions - Stopped Working

Jan 19, 2011

I don't know how this happened, but my keyboard copy and paste functions have stopped working. Oddly enough, I discovered that I can only copy and paste by using the third mouse button. Pressing down on the scroll wheel after highlighting text copies the text, pressing it again pastes it Ican still use the Edit-copy and Edit-paste menu functions.

I'm sure it has something to do with all the tinkering I have been doing with my desktop. I have been experimenting with CompizConfig and Cairo dock, changing my themes and things of this nature.

Ubuntu :: User Account Control And User Rights Assignment?

Sep 29, 2010

I have a user account which is required to run as part of the operating system and as a service. I am currently attempting to install my companies software on an Ubuntu desktop via wine just for the purpose of finding out if it's do-able.

Is there a way, in Ubuntu, for a user account to be given the local rights assignment to act as part of the operating system and to function as a service in the background?

Server :: SFTP User Adding For VSFTPD?

Oct 24, 2010

I just installed Wordpress and i am delighted of it, nice peace of software. Even so I have to get running a FTP or SFTP server on my localhost machine. I did installed in my Ubuntu 10.10 the VSFTPD server and generated a RSA certificate file (vsftpd.pem). Strange it is that there is no vsftpd folder under /etc, instead vsftpd.conf file is directly into /etc ... so I have generated also my .pem file into /etc. Anyway I have a lot of trouble adding new users to access this server. I use Filezilla as SFTP client. Please let me know if you encountered such an issue, and what is the solution for it. Downwards is my vsftpd.conf file.

# Example config file /etc/vsftpd.conf

# The default compiled in settings are fairly paranoid. This sample file
# loosens things up a bit, to make the ftp daemon more usable.

Server :: Vsftpd - Keep Ftp User Inside Home Directory

Aug 22, 2010

I'm using Slackware 13.0 on my server and am going to be employing a file-sharing service for a client. I was able to enable a quota, but my problem now is keeping the user inside their home directory. I've searched around and found an old thread on here (from 2003) that gave me some ideas, but it still isn't working. Should I be running vsftpd standalone or leave it on the inetd? If I set the shell to /sbin/nologin or /bin/false, the user can't log in through FTP, even.

Server :: Use Htpasswd To Add Password To User And Store In /etc/vsftpd/passwd

Feb 4, 2010

I started to work on building a ftp by vsftpd in our lab (that's only for our lab members). I am going to setup some the virtual users for each of the member. We have a CentOS5 (without upgrade after the fresh installation). I try several ways to setup the vsftpd for virtual users. 1) with db4 2) with mysql 3) without database and use htpasswd. But all fails. Actually, I don't want to use database, so I am going to find out the reason of failure on 'htpasswd' method

My vsftpd is installed in /etc/vsftpd (for only using ftp account, it is no problem to login).

1) I setup an account called vftpuser and build the corresponding home (/home/vftpuser), and then I setup another account call usera and also create a directory within /home/vftpuser.

2) I use htpasswd to add passwd to usera and store the passwd in /etc/vsftpd/passwd.

3) I added the name of usera to /etc/vsftpd/user_list

4) I create a directory /etc/vsftpd/user to store a unique conf for each user (for usera, the conf named usera) which contains the local root for users, which is

Slackware :: VSFTPD User Versus Login Shell Definition

Jul 18, 2011

I'm using VSFTPD on my office LAN for one simple task: to receive-and send - installation images created with Ghost4Linux. Until recently, my main LAN server ran on CentOS, but I decided to migrate it to Slackware (nicer release policy ).

What I usually do is create an 'install' user who can login to FTP, but not on the system. Here's an example of what I used to do on my CentOS setup:

Code:

# mkdir -p -m 0700 /home/ftp/install
# groupadd install
# useradd -d /home/ftp/install -g install -s /sbin/nologin install
# chown -R install:install /home/ftp/install
# passwd install

The relevant bits in vsftpd.conf looked like this on the CentOS server:

Code:

...
anonymous_enable=NO
...
userlist_enable=YES
userlist_deny=NO
userlist_file=/etc/vsftpd/user_list
...

Then I only had to create the /etc/vsftpd/user_list file and put a single line in it to allow the newly created user:

Code:

install Now I've tried to get the same behaviour on Slackware, and I succeeded more or less, except for one thing. There's no way my 'install' user can login to FTP when his default shell is set to '/sbin/nologin' (or '/bin/false'). Only when I change the 'install' users' default shell to a "real" shell like '/bin/bash', he's able to login.

Here's a little practical demonstration of what's happening:

Code:

$ lftp localhost
lftp localhost:~> user install
Mot de passe :

CentOS 5 Server :: VSFTPD - Unable To Authenticate As Anonymous User

May 4, 2010

I am attempting to configure vsftpd to allow anonymous users to PUT files into a shared incoming directory. This would be like a dropbox for my customers. Ideally, the incoming directory's contents would not be viewable by the users.

I believe that refused connection is due to the PAM configuration for vsftpd.

Debian :: Sound Not Card Configured - Error 'Volume Control Did Not Find Any Elements And/or Devices To Control" - Driver

Feb 8, 2011

Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.

Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'

CentOS 5 :: 64bit Vsftpd Not Working?

Mar 9, 2011

I recently got a hosted CentOS 5.5 box at a server farm to run a small ftp server for me.

They preloaded the image and installed a .86_64 build of 5.5, and I've only been familiar with i386.

I didn't think there'd be much of an issue from this, but I've gone thru all the normal steps to install and configure VSFTPD, however nothing is working.

I'm running CentOS release 5.5 (Final)

and I've gotten VSFTPD build 2.0.5 release 16.e15_5.1 installed from both yum and rpm (at separate times) and I've also tried grabbing the tar ball of 2.3.2 and 2.3.4, but run into dependency issues when compiling the code using GCC (it wasnt installed the first time).

i've started and made vsftpd persistent using service vsftpd start, chkconfig vsftpd on, and i restart the service after any changes to the conf file.

I'm trying to run the following settings. in /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf

# Example config file /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf
#
# The default compiled in settings are fairly paranoid. This sample file

Server :: VSFTPD PASV Suddenly Stops Working?

Jan 11, 2010

My organization has been using PASV FTP via VSFTPD for some time now. We have defined the port range between 30000 and 33333 and as I mentioned, it has worked up to 20100108 (last Friday). It appears that VSFTPD is not negotiating the defined PASV port range, which we can see with both netstat and tcpdump. Has anyone here run into this before? Are there any VSFTPD hackers out there who know what mechanism VSFTPD is using to re-allocate the ports? I would think that it would release the port, and flag it as unused, or something.

Ubuntu Servers :: New User Looking For Drive Config

Feb 4, 2010

I'm planning to take a custom-built machine presently running Windows Home Server and convert it to a Ubuntu server to support the same backup functionality, but also allow me to support other server functions as well (WHS is great for backups and as a file server, but that's about it). The machine has two 1TB 7200 RPM drives. As the primary use for the machine is backups of files stored on the server as well as on the local PCs, I'd like to configure the box to support redundancy across both drives - So if one fails, I still have my data. What would be the recommended configuration of the drives to support this? I plan on using Bacula for the backups (clients and server).

I'll assume the disk format won't be NTFS.If one of the drives fail and its the boot drive, how easy is it to recover the data from the other drive? Just want to make sure there isn't some form of security that would prevent me from reading the data.

I'm new to Linux with only a bit of Unix experience, but I figure I have to start somewhere (and I have a bit of technical expertise, just with the Windows platform) This will also let me start playing with the LAMP stack.

Server :: With PS Cannot Control The Processes Of Another User

I have a problem with the permission of the directories under /proc, they are readable and accessible only by Owner (they have permission 500 instead of the usual 555) As a consequence, the processes are visible only to the Owners or to Root. For exampleif I want to check if there is mysql

I see it only with the user mysql or with root because the directory has permission 500

This problem obstacles the functioning of some applications that should check the existence of some processes managed by other users. At the beginning all was working well. But after a while the problem appeared and I dont know which is the reason of it. how to restore the standard management of permissions of / proc?]

I have a Ubuntu server Maverick 10:10.
