Slackware :: VSFTPD User Versus Login Shell Definition
Jul 18, 2011
I'm using VSFTPD on my office LAN for one simple task: to receive-and send - installation images created with Ghost4Linux. Until recently, my main LAN server ran on CentOS, but I decided to migrate it to Slackware (nicer release policy ).
What I usually do is create an 'install' user who can login to FTP, but not on the system. Here's an example of what I used to do on my CentOS setup:
Then I only had to create the /etc/vsftpd/user_list file and put a single line in it to allow the newly created user:
Code:
install Now I've tried to get the same behaviour on Slackware, and I succeeded more or less, except for one thing. There's no way my 'install' user can login to FTP when his default shell is set to '/sbin/nologin' (or '/bin/false'). Only when I change the 'install' users' default shell to a "real" shell like '/bin/bash', he's able to login.
Here's a little practical demonstration of what's happening:
Code:
$ lftp localhost
lftp localhost:~> user install
Mot de passe :
I am getting "530 Login incorrect" error message when trying to connect vsftpd server through ftp.
I have vsftp executable and configuration file recieved from windriver. earlier i was not able to run this executable, but after few changes in vsftpd.conf now i am able to run vsftpd server. But when I try to connect to this server from another system I am getting above error.
I am using the sudo command to log on locally as another user by the following command:
sudo -u theotheruser -s or sudo -u theotheruser sh
As I see it, this initiates a new shell with the mentioned other user.However, this doesn't load that users profile from his home directory.Is there a way to automatically read the users profile when login in with selected command? I am mostely interested in getting a working prompt when logged in.
yesterday I updated my fedora 13 to fedora 14 (on laptop) and today i cannot log in on user. It just go blank for a sec and is back to login.
At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console username: Name password: last used: [date] login: no shell permission denied
i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)
I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.
edited: i have installed F13 on unused space, is there a way for me to access and fix it? or at least get some files from there?
I inadvertently typed the wrong path when changing my user login shell and now every time I log in I get a message stating that it can't find the shell and boots me off the system. It will then redisplay the login prompt. I'm running Ubuntu Server x64 in VMware Workstation.
I was trying to create a shell script which will automatically login to the server 192.168.1.7 and checks if a user exists there or not, if it doesn't exist then it should create the user.I have very little idea about shell scriptThis is what I tried:Quote:
#!/bin/bash pass="sacharje" ssh 192.168.1.7
Now, how to pass that password automatically to the ssh when it asks for the password? (I can't use public key authentication here)
I have installed vsftpd by "yum -y install vsftpd",disabled anonymous login and set .When I use a linux client's file browser to login using a user account "ftpacc" by ftp://ip_address, its location is "/" instead of /home/ftpacc".When I use a window client to login, its location is "/home/ftpacc"
Setup: 10.04 server with "bash" as /bin/sh When I run "ls -l" in a shell I get the following format:
Code: -rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 0 2010-06-13 06:53 /var/log/user.log Whereas if "ls -l" executes from a cron job the format is:
Code: -rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 0 Jun 13 06:53 /var/log/user.log Notice the different time format. Now I could fix this by changing the cron job to
Code: ls -l --time-style=+%Y-%m-%d %H:%M ... but I'm interested in knowing why this behavior occurs. What's different between the cron job and the shell?
- is there a way to set the default user in console login so that all needed is to press enter(or event without it) to be able to input the password for that user - also is it possible to console login without password, by just inputting user name and pressing enter how to put startx for that user right on login, so that the user doesn't input the command manually
MACHINE: HP Proliant DL260G5OS: SLES 11 SP1kernel: Linux xserver 2.6.32.12-0.7-default #1 SMP 2010-05-20 11:14:20 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/LinuxIt is used as remote xserver in a LAN.I have configured /usr/lib/restricted/bin/.rbashrc with some environment variables but when the users logon in the system finally is executed $HOME/.bashrc and some environment vars are overwritten.
I m trying to use VSFTPD, but it is failed to login of local users, i did tried to login on localhost, it become login successfully on localhost, but taking much delay to login. and login become fail from remote computer. this is text of "vsftpd.conf"
I just installed Wordpress and i am delighted of it, nice peace of software. Even so I have to get running a FTP or SFTP server on my localhost machine. I did installed in my Ubuntu 10.10 the VSFTPD server and generated a RSA certificate file (vsftpd.pem). Strange it is that there is no vsftpd folder under /etc, instead vsftpd.conf file is directly into /etc ... so I have generated also my .pem file into /etc. Anyway I have a lot of trouble adding new users to access this server. I use Filezilla as SFTP client. Please let me know if you encountered such an issue, and what is the solution for it. Downwards is my vsftpd.conf file.
# Example config file /etc/vsftpd.conf # # The default compiled in settings are fairly paranoid. This sample file # loosens things up a bit, to make the ftp daemon more usable.
I use vsftpd, i disabled anonymous users. sometimes i look at the log-files. and there are much entries from bots. they try to connect to the ftp with users like apache or tomcat. they try it 10, 20, 30 or more times. can i block them with vsftpd after 5 failed logins for 1 hour or something like this?
I just set up my own server and basically my folder is on say /media/disk1/ and my girlfriends is on /media/patato/ is there a way i can set it so that if i log in it goes to my folder and if she does it goes to hers.... I've currently got it set up as /media/ that it goes to but i cant get it to change it for each user (we can also browse each others drive and we dont want that, we want to be tied into /media/ourdirectory and all of its subdirectories) problem is that it is running on a computer that use to be functional (same install because I cant find my disk drive) so it cant use home folders....
I havent worked on a linux system in about 6 years so Im a little rusty and wasnt that great 6 years ago. Im trying to create a user that can only upload to the server. I have picked at several post tutorial and such but its still not working. Currently you can still upload and download even though you should only be able to upload. Im sure Im missing something but have no clue what
I'm using Slackware 13.0 on my server and am going to be employing a file-sharing service for a client. I was able to enable a quota, but my problem now is keeping the user inside their home directory. I've searched around and found an old thread on here (from 2003) that gave me some ideas, but it still isn't working. Should I be running vsftpd standalone or leave it on the inetd? If I set the shell to /sbin/nologin or /bin/false, the user can't log in through FTP, even.
chroot_local_user=NO chroot_list_enable=YES chroot_list_file=/etc/vsftpd.chroot_list from /etc/passwd:
When ever i try to login to my ftp server(linux, fedora) through filezilla or cuteftp then its giving error even if login details are correct. Its are working fine locally but remotelly its giving error when ever i try to connect to it using external ipaddres or domainname. the error is as follows Status:
Connected with [URL]. Waiting for welcome message... Status:Connecting to host1.domain.com ... Response:220 (vsFTPd 2.0.5) Command:USER test
But if i try to connect to ftp server via brower(internet explorer or mozilla). ITs working fine.I dont know what is the reson behind this. few days back it was working fine through filezilla or cuteftp. proxy setting are also fine. its the same which i was using few days back.
I am attempting to connect to VSFTPD via Filezilla from a windows machine, but regardless of which user name I use I get a "530 Login incorrect" error. I have tried turning off the firewalls on both the CentOS and Windows side of things with no result. I disabled the SSL/TLS commands in the config file, also with no change. I tried a couple of different FTP clients, but got similar results regardless of which client I used. I have been going over man pages and documentation for a couple of days now, but cannot come up with an answer. I suspect it lies in my configuration, but I got the same results when I reverted my config file back to the original. what else I can do? One other note is that I am attempting to connect via a LAN, at this point I don't care if it works across the WAN as I only intend to use it to upload files to my web server.
