View 1 RepliesI'm running squeeze on i686, my last update was this morning (9/9/2010). Running the stock kernel 2.6.32-5-686
My PC keeps crashing when copying files. The monitor displays the desktop, but the mouse doesn't move, nothing responds and I can't even ssh in to debug it.
This happens when copying files using nautilus and the command line. I'm trying to copy files from my local hard disk to an nfs drive which is mounted in my system and has been working fine for years.
how to debug this after a hard reboot?
This has only just started happening, last night was the first time.
I have just installed Debian 6.0.2.1 X86_64. I have enabled the Debian-Multimedia repository, and I have installed gstreamer base, good, bad and ugly plugins, and w64codecs too. Now I want to play MOV files using totem, it says it needs "MPEG-4 Video decoder" to play the file. When I press search, it finds no results. what other packages do I need to play MOV files?

Last month I installed (not upgrade) squeeze in place of lenny on my dual boot laptop where the other OS is windows 7 Home basic (both C and D drives). I just noticed it today that while I can get any file from the windows to my squeeze I am not permitted to put any file to windows. As far as I remember I was not asked during squeeze installation whether the windows drives would be read-only drives. This difficulty was not faced when I had lenny. Can this problem be remedied now without going through a re-installation?
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is about the Squeeze (0.2.3-8) archiver in Debian Squeeze. I may be missing a dependency, but is Squeeze incapable of opening files inside archives? I created a generic archive with "tar -cvf arxiv.tar file01.txt" and Squeeze segfaults when I try to double click to open the file (file01.txt) stored in the archive (arxiv.tar).
Also, after experimenting with Squeeze on the command line, it seems the "-n" option works, but results in an orphaned gui window; the "-x" option will only extract to a directory which already exists (which is o.k., but should be documented); and the "-d" option doesn't follow the general syntax in the man page "squeeze [OPTION...] [archive name]", which isn't bad, but sure does make it unnecessarily cumbersome to use, and also, the gui runs (blinks for a split section) for no clear reason. Now it would be silly to use command line squeeze over tar, but the man page for Squeeze begins with: "Squeeze - modern and advanced archive manager for Xfce".
I would like a gui archiver/extracter to use with Xfce4 without all the QA problems. Unless I'm doing something really wrong, this software doesn't seem to be ready for release at all, and the upstream version has not changed in a long time.
I had installed ssh but something went wrong and I uninstalled it. I removed the SSH configuration files by hand (I deleted all /etc/ssh folder). After ssh installation (I mean apt-get install ssh) I noticed that I have no SSH configuration files.I tried apt-get install openssh-server but i still have no SSH configuration files.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOur business is replacing Microsoft Windows with Ubuntu (Linux) but there is one or two problems with the main computer in the office. One the main computer is my Dad's computer and the only thing he does differently then the other computers is that he does his accounting which he uses Simply Accounting and I don't think Simply Accounting is compatible with Ubuntu/Linux.
I found a great, simple accounting program for Ubuntu called Eqonomize. It doesn't have to be that one, but anyone where we can convert are data from Simply Account to an accounting program with Ubuntu.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy problem is that I can' t launch my PHP files in Firefox to see them local.
I have Apache, PHP and MySQL installed.
I also moved my web folder to /var/www but still can't see them.
I can see the default html file: "It works!" but not my files.
Firefox is still asking what it should do with the file, if it should open or save it. But I can't see them.
I'm completely new to the Linux OS. It is very foreign to me, i'm very used to the way windows does everything, including how windows does installation. I know that Linux doesn't understand .exe files like windows does... which is part of the problem. I have a linux zip file of a program (Jgrasp) that I want to install. I unzipped it into my home file and then wanted to run the program, but I have no idea what to do next. How the heck do I run the program if i can't access the .exe's what files launch a program in linux? Also how do i get it to recognize the JDK files?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm a member of ubuntuone-android-hackers team on Launchpad, I work on Ubuntu One Files app. If you would like to see new features in the app, you can post your ideas here. I think the forums is a good and comfortable place to share ideas. We have already received quite a lot of requests via e-mail. Most notably, these have been already requested:
- secure app launch with PIN entry
- preserve folder structure when auto-uploading files
- real sync (i.e. reupload a file, that has been modified; sync down favorite folders; etc)
We continue to fix bugs and improve on what we already have, this is just to give you a place to share ideas on new features. We will select the best we can take on given available time and resources. I can't guarantee we'll implement them, I can guarantee however that we're doing our best and I'll be keeping track of this official thread.
As the Rescatux forum registration is currently disabled, I'm asking here...
How to launch Rescatux from a hard disk drive - BIOS mode (DVD-reader is dead)?
EDIT: I suppose through a similar procedure as for launching a debian install from hdd (re. here and here), hence: which kernel binary and ramdisk image to use?
I'm on debian jessie 8.1, just installed gtk-redshift and it won't start from applications menu (nothing happens when I click it). I'm using xfce, could it be the problem?

I'm trying to launch a root terminal with a profile preloaded, but I'm not yet used to the way gnome handles its syntax, so the default link to root terminal has me confused:
Code:
gksu -D Terminal -- env -u ORBIT_SOCKETDIR /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator
Apparently, the method using gnome-terminal is to add a trailing
Code:
--window-with-profile=PROFILENAME
but this did not work, probably because in this case I'm not calling directly on gnome's terminal.
how to install Dropbox for Debian Squeeze from source. Please read everything before you begin. I prepared it as I installed Dropbox for my own system. Please Note: I use sudo, you may have to use root or 'su' from the command line. If you don't know the difference between sudo and su, then you shouldn't try this until you know. At the time I did this, the lastest dropbox version was 0.6.7.

su
apt-get install devscripts debian-keyring

What happens in the (probably unlikely) event there is another source patch?I've gone to a tiling window manager as the result of the purchase of a wide screen LCD monitor. Fresh Squeeze install: I have AWN running and right now I have used gconf-editor to stop gnome-panel from being a part of the Gnome Sessions. I think it was in Desktop -> Sessions -> Default Settings..or something like that. Before I did this I was just clearing out the entries for the top panel, using Apps -> Panel -> and then it was top_panel or something like that. I'm at work so I cannot fully verify, after I deleted the bottom panel. This still allowed me to use ALT + F2 to bring up the run prompt.
Since removing gnome-panel from the session, I cannot use ALT + F2 anymore. If I were to put gnome-panel back, is there a way to keep the panels from recreating themselves after I remove them from within gconf-editor? If I leave gnome-session alone, whenever I reboot the top panel keeps coming back. I have everything I want running out of the AWN dock, so I want to remove the panels completely but still have the ability to launch the run prompt.
How to enable the cairo dock at start up on debian jessie? Apparently there is no way to automatically lauch it at system reboot?

So I just installed 32-bit Squeeze. I've done exactly two things since booting into the first install: pt-get install gtk+2.0, and ./firefox, so unless gtk did something, this might be an easily fixable problem with Debian itself. After installing gtk and trying to run firefox via command line, it tells me
Code: Error: cannot open display: :0 I googled a bit and couldn't come up with a solid solution, but the problem seems to be around other places. Any idea how to fix this?
I've just install debian squeeze version, or the testing one, but I am not really happy with it. Is not listening me all the time. If I install the debian stable I don't have internet connection. Is it possible to update the kernel somehow using the testing version?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install a command line Debian Squeeze system on n Eee PC 701., but have run into a number of problems:
1) All install info I can find assumes that the person wants to install a GUI system of some sort.
2) The Eee PC has a unique 2 MB. partition that needs to be preserved, so no guided install.
3) The Eee PC has an SSD instead of an HD. Most postings I have seen recommend an install without a swap partition, but the install (both live and text) seems to choke and despite a fresh formatting of the existing partition, claims to be overwriting existing files.
4) I can understand from the wiki that the Eee PC wireless driver (Atheros) should be included in Squeeze, but when the wireless connection and password is added, the installer claims that the password is not correct, despite me having checked it a number of times.
I hope someone can help me out. I just want to use the Eee PC for low resource stuff done on the cli like using a text based web browser to access the net through a wireless router and to hook it up to an external USB HD and to my stereo, to play my music collection.
