Mar 27, 2016I'm not new to Debian. I am using Debian 8 netinstall. I want to add PIA as a VPN. I don't know how to do this as it's not as easy as Linux Mint. I tried googling it, but everything is confusing.

Networking :: Setting Dns Name For Debian Box?
Feb 11, 2010I've set a dns name for my debian box and apparently the configuration is OK since when i type:
cmpgdev:~# hostname -f
cmpgdev.unibe.ch
i get exactly what i need. when i ping my dns name and/or ip address locally, the machine answers. when i ping my ip address from a distant machine, the machine answers but when i ping my dns name, no answer ..

Feb 11, 2011Since I have been using grub-legacy in quite an unorthodox manner, and ironically, getting benefits that an otherwise obedient user wouldn't even dream of getting, this question may, most probably, pose a challenge to all those who don't understand the filthy tricks of grub. So, here I am, trying to install grub, in a manner, that makes it independent of all operating systems on my computer. As I understand it, a bootloader is so important, especially when it is used to boot multiple OSs, that I deem it mandatory for it to be installed in a manner making it independent of all operating systems it is used for.
What I did till now:I have a 24 Mega Byte partition to which I copied /boot/grub/*I run the command: # grub-install --root-directory=/mounted-partition-holding-the-copied-files '(hd0)'Grub boots, but the menus are not displayed presenting me with a cute shell with limited commands. My next strategy in this battle, is to copy the device.map and grub.cfg files from a working installation - a sort of a heart transplant.
Debian :: Setting Date Timezone
May 5, 2015I'm trying to install Symfony to Debian 7 amd64 LAMP Server and I have some lil problems
When I run php my_project_name/app/check.php
It says:
[ERROR]
Your system is not ready to run Symfony2 projects
Fix the following mandatory requirements
* date.timezone setting must be set
> Set the "date.timezone" setting in php.ini* (like Europe/Paris).
I already tried to edit php.ini with command :
sudo nano /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini
I deleted ; and so under [Date] section is now following sentence: date.timezone = Europe/Helsinki
after that restarted apache /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Debian :: Login Screen Setting Using Gdm3?
Jul 13, 2011Using Debian testing and gdm3. I had set the login screen settings to automatically log me in however I want to change it back so that I have to login on startup however I cannot change the settings.In System > Administration > Login Screen the 'Click to make changes' highlights when I put the mouse pointer over it and it blinks when I click on it but that is all that happens so I cannot make any changes. Is there any way to fix this problem.

May 19, 2015I have been trying to change my PATH environment variable to no avail. I am using Jessie i386 with MATE. Using my .bashrc file works but not well because with subshells the modifications get repeated. I want the change to occur on login.
I tried modifying ~/.profile ~/.bash_profile /etc/profile and /etc/environment and one or two others but in no case did my change get picked up even after logging out and in again and even after rebooting. I searched the Internet and found each of the above places to make the change but they don't seem to work with Jessie.
Where do I make the necessary change?

Jun 4, 2010I have been trying to set up an old pIII 700Mhz PC as a local intranet server to run some PHP code.
I have got debian installed setup ssh since it is a headless computer mounted a usb hard drive to store the web page remapped apache2 to use the /mnt/sda1/html/ folder and tested that php scripts are running
now what i can't seem to get working is the following:
ftp access to /mnt/sda1/html so I can upload files from my pc on the network and
phpmyadmin so i can easily manipulat mySQL databases.
after reading [URL] I typed in #apt-get install phpmyadmin
it downloads a bunch of stuff and says it is installing it but when i do the next step in the instructions go to
http://192.168.0.100/phpmyadmin/
I get a 404 Not Found error.

Aug 3, 2010The office network has a machine we're using as a fileserver, which is running Windows Server 2003. There are several issues with this, but the main one is that the "Terminal Server License Server" was never installed or activated. I managed to do these things, but to continue requires retail keys which are long since lost. So the boss says we're going to make it into a linux server instead. And by we, he means me. A friend recommended Debian so my research starts here. i have a little experience running an ubuntu desktop at home, using the console quite a lot. And a little bit of experience messing with my own server. however, most of this is new territory for me.
The needs of the organisation:
1. We need a shared directory on the server which all valid accounts can access
2. We need a per-user directory on the server for each user, which only that user or root can access.
3. We need a per-user windows desktop, which only that user or root can access.

Jan 20, 2011hHey i recently installed Debian Squeeze 64bit over my Ubuntu & Windows, i got everything installed and running including all programs i need without a single problem The one thing i havent been able to do yet is install the Nvidia Driver for Geforce 8800gt, ive searched a few sites but one site is telling you to do this way and the the is telling you to do it another way then people are saying about having errors when xorg updates and stuff.
So i was wanting to know whats the easiest and best way to install the Nvidia Driver package (from nvidia website) onto Squeeze 64bit, i've done it on lenny but cant remember ow
If i get this working then il probaly use Debian as my main OS from now on.
Debian :: Setting Up Asus N13 USB Wireless Adapter
Jul 5, 2011I currently know next to nothing about networks in Linux (yes I am working on that). I have just brought a Asus n13 wireless adapter after failing to get my laptop wireless working. I am using the 2.6.32-5 Debian squeeze kernel. The device connected once after I did the following:
apt-get update
modprobe rt2870sta
iwconfig
ifconfig wlan0 up
The device connected to wifi and was working fine. I then shutdown and rebooted to see if it would automatically connect on start up and now, although nothing seems to have changed and even after I repeated the steps above it did not connect. The network manager applet as well as listing the asus adapter(as ralink 802.11 WLAN) lists a Texas instruments PCI1410 pc card cardbus controller which i didn't before.
This is the output of iwconfig:

Apr 9, 2011I have two ethernet NIC's on my debian server. One built-in Realtek [eth0] (attached to internet), and a PCI Nvidia ethernet card [eth1] (attached to my Win7 netbook). I used this guide to setup the bridge: url. It worked when I was behind a router. But when I moved the computer in front of the router, to direct connect to the internet, the internet stopped functioning on any device that I plug into my Nvidia NIC. The name of my bridge is 'br0'. Does anyone know how to fix it, so I can route the internet to my second NIC?

Exactly what I am trying to do: Existing network is as follows: Comcast internet to cable modem to Belkin N Wireless Router Model F5D 8236-4 v3. That router is wired to one desktop (running Windows XP)and has 4 wifi notebooks (two running Windows 7 and two running Mint 9 Isadora) and two Wii consoles running off of it. I am seeking to add another desktop to the network in another room without having to drill some holes and run about 40 feet of cable. Seems like it shouldn't take much to get the two routers to "talk" to each other so I can do this. The router I am trying to hook to it is either a Belkin F5D 9230-4 wireless router or a NetGear N150 WNR1000 v2 Wireless router.

May 20, 2010I tried to set up an automatic program restart on Debian Lenny for fail2ban and asterisk. Google helped me to find some HowTos. However, all what I tried so far doesn't work. The latest version: According some instructions the following commands have been written in a file called auto_start_stop:

Why this doesn't work and how I could correct it?

Debian Installation :: Grub 2 Not Setting Boot Record?
Mar 21, 2011I've been using squeeze for a year or two now, on a PC dual booting with windows xp. Not long ago I thought that, as it's now become the stable release version, I'd do a fresh install, which I've been trying to do with the first two dvds. The installation proceeds as expected, up to and including setting grub. However, although grub saysthat it has detected windows xp, and I tell it to set up the dual boot, the computer on reboot goes straight into windows xp, with no on-scrteen option shown for choosing debian.

I have the correct driver packages from the non-free repositories (firmware-realtek) and this service (hotspot) worked fine on distros like Ubuntu, Mint and Fedora .
I tried hostapd but it didn't work. I'm using cinnamon desktop.

Apr 5, 2010I'm trying to set up a small web server with php and sqlite support. I installed lighttpd, php5, php-sqlite3 and php5-sqlite3. Then, I enabled sqlite and pdo extensions in php.ini:

extension=sqlite.so
extension=pdo_sqlite.so
However, when I try to open a SQLite3 database from php:
$database = new SQLiteDatabase($myDB, 666, $error);
I get the following exception:
SQLiteDatabase::__construct() [sqlitedatabase.--construct]: file is encrypted or is not a database
Some readings in the net make me think that my php settings are not compatible with SQLite3 databases. Is anyone successfully working with SQLite3 databases from PHP5 under Debian? Have you any recommendations? Should I rebuild php maybe?

Nov 26, 2010I am putting together a server and computer lab at my school for Standardized testing, and am planning on using debian for it. But first, i must prove to the school board that this is a possible and viable option, so right now it is one pc with 1 gig ram (Going to be the server for this experiment), and two others with around 512 mb ram.the problem with all this is, the computers in the lab cannot have hard drives, as there is some sort of licencing issue. So I need to be able to have these two testing computers boot from the server's hard drive.
