Debian :: Script To Bring Network Up And Down

Feb 12, 2010

I like to disconnect the internet when I want to and connect when I want to. I've been using Etch but have now installed Lenny. This is what I've done:

Created in kwrite and saved in /home/[my username]/bin as "ifdown":
#!/bin/bash
#script to bring network interface down
ifdown eth0

Clicked "is executable" on the "permissions" tab of the properties.
Changed the ownership to root (chown root:root ifdown)

My notes tell me that this is what I did in Etch to have it working (via a shortcut on the desktop). Either my notes are incomplete/wrong, things are different in Lenny

Fedora :: Bring Up Whatever Service Holds The Network Settings Without GNOME?

Aug 27, 2010

I have a problem with my Fedora system. Whilst I was messing around with my graphics drivers I managed to totally screw up the system, now my desktop won't start, leaving me with just the command prompt. In order to fix it I will need to get my wireless adapter connected to my home network, this is proving tricky. I understand that NetworkManager is responsible for bringing up the network but unfortunately without starting GNOME I don't have the settings available to me (through the nm-cli) or a way to configure it.

Is there a way to bring up whatever service holds the network settings without GNOME? In the meantime I am looking into alternative ways of configuring NM, perhaps through the DBUS interface? Even so, I suspect that I will still need a settings ervice at the end of it..

Ubuntu Networking :: Change Network Card And Bring Eth0 Up

Mar 14, 2010

I run an Ubuntu Server in a Virtualbox environment. Setup works fine. In virtualbox, I accidentally hit a button that generates and assigns a new mac address for the network adapter. Since then the machine does not bring eth0 up. I tried the following ifconfig eth0 down; ifconfig eth0 hw ether macaddress; ifconfig eth0 up. Then restarted networking.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ad-hoc Network Doesn't Survive A Reboot / Avoid Having To Bring Down And Up Interface?

Mar 1, 2011

I'm configuring an HP Mini 110 (wireless BCM4313) to use it as a small Access Point (ad-hoc mode).

I want to make my configuration reboot friendly. With what I have right now, as soon as I reboot the laptop, the wireless interface configuration isn't correctly setup. I have to do "ifdown eth1; ifup eth1" manually.

Here is what I have in /etc/network/interfaces for the wireless interface code...

So the question is how can I avoid having to bring down and up the interface?

Debian :: How Does One Bring Up The Gpsd Configuration Dialog With Jessie

Jun 5, 2015

Configuring gpsd with Wheezy was a breeze. Just had to run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gpsd", answer a few questions, and it worked like a charm. With Debian Jessie the following happens:

tsi@sxf-tsi:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure gpsd
Warning: Stopping gpsd.service, but it can still be activated by:
gpsd.socket

Debian Multimedia :: Lightdm Login Screen Does Not Bring Up Lightdm-gtk-greeter Dialog Box

May 4, 2015

In Jessie the lightdm login screen does not bring up a lightdm-gtk-greeter dialog box but what seems to be some other one. I can increase the font size by modifying the /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf file, but the login dialog box will not grow to accommodate the larger font (old eyes). The lightdm-gtk-greeter dialog box in Wheezy was a rectangle with a glyph of a console centered in its upper portion, and all the files I have examined indicate that this should be the same in Jessie, but instead the login screen in Jessie displays a narrower rectangle with a head-and-shoulder stylization off to the left.

Granted this may be a blessing in disguise, but I can't bring up XP to play WoW (the only game i play on the computer). So, question is, when I download WINE, how should I download WoW and how should it be executed

I've been holding out on the recent few versions of Ubuntu because of the recent changes, so I was just wondering if 10.10 will bring back some of those lost features.

1. Will we see a way to have a customisable login screen?

2. Will there be an option to move the close button as a standard setting?

Ubuntu :: Bring New Computer Up Online 11.04?

Jun 3, 2011

I got in it this time. Bought the components and have them installed.. Turned on the box, several beeps, and then American Mega trends screen came up. Move into BIOS to look around but left everything as "Default".The F header is connected, DVD lights up, power off and on, all fans are also running. The cooler fan, two additional case fans, and the fan on the GForce video card are also running. burned an ISO of 11.04, and as the screen placed it in DVD drive, hit a key and got a request to "Insert Boot Media and hit a key, and hit a key. Can't get passed the request. I don't know whether to try to format the HD with "Partition Magic". or what. Is there a "HowTo' out there, or could someone give me a hand.

Ubuntu :: NTP Using IRIG-B - Bring Data Into 10.04

Jun 28, 2011

I have a Brandywine GPS-8 receiver that is outputting IRIG-B data over a serial cable. I am attempting to bring this data into Ubuntu 10.04 so that I can have this server share time with the rest of my network. Problem is, I cannot find ANY information on this at all. I have tried gpsd, it will see something is connected when I do a gpsctl at 9600 baud but I will not see any data behind it. I know the receiver is connected as I can see six satellites and I have tried two different serial cables.

Fedora Installation :: Cannot Bring F12 Up On Pentium Pro / 128MB RAM

Dec 8, 2009

This is harder than it should be. 233 MHz Pentium Pro, 128 MB RAM, Matrox Mystique graphics. The important thing is 35W idle and no fans - a perfect firewall.

Things discovered so far:
- I need to burn DVDs for this machine with -speed=2 (sigh!)
- The syslinux boot loader cannot display its graphical menu - must use the syslinux boot: prompt (double sigh)
- The Live CD does eventually boot into X

The install DVD boots but quickly displays a "You do not have enough RAM to install Fedora on this machine" dialog (this is in text mode). Two questions:
Q1. Is it possible to get anaconda on the DVD to use a swap partition (or otherwise fit into 128MB)?
Q2: Failing that, can I install from the Live CD without starting X?
