May 18, 2010I have just upgraded to lucid and the first thing that I noticed was that the different shutdown options (Logout, Restart etc.) disappeared from the user-switch menu (at least that's how I think it is called) where they were located previously under karmic. Logout and Shutdown are placed under the System menu currently, and they work fine, but my question is how to show all (or some) of the shutdown options in the System or user menu? I dislike going through the dialog and prefer to choose my action directly from the menu.I have tried removing and readding the user-switch applet, to no avail. I tried adding menu items to both the system menu and the user menu, to no avail either

If i do either it appears too the computer as though I unplugged it even though it's still connected to the computer. Is there a way to bring back unmount so that it will still appear under places? By panel I mean where all the menus are there - Applications, Places, System etc. and contains a tab for every running application. I brought back the panel but now I don't see the terminal launcher and I can't find it anywhere.It used to be there in "Applications -> System Tools -> Terminal" but now the System Tools option itself is not present there. System -> Preferences -> Look and Feel -> Main Menu. There one System option is unchecked but I can't check it and apply. I am logged in as root.

Apr 30, 2010I hate using Software Center. I can't pick more than one program to install at one time. It downloads only one program at a time.The downloads take longer. I'm not able to look at all available programs at once. It doesn't categorise the programs on the sidebar, but instead you have to use another icon window. Gnome-app-install was just easer to use. Anyone else feel this way?

-You can install gnome-app-install from this ppa repo.
-Update the repository (including the new PPA):
sudo apt-get update
-Install the gnome application installer:
sudo apt-get install gnome-app-install

now both top and bottom panels are gone. I need help to bring both panels back. I'm on jaunty jackalope 9.04.

The most recent update that produced the kernel version above is bit of a disaster for me. The open source radeon driver does not work with VirtualBox (it crashes at startup), and the ATI fglrx driver either builds without acceleration (or the X server loads it that way?) or fails to build.
Is there a way to undo some (or all, if necessary) of the update?

Jun 18, 2011Question about the bug reporting system that I think is called ABRT Struggling with F15 and want to file a bug report, but the backtrace thingy says I should remove sensitive data first. Obviously a good idea, but the report is full of what to a non-programmer looks like gibberish - things like what I guess are hexadecimal numbers or memory addresses, none of which I understand. Can any of that incomprehensible stuff contain sensitive data, like encryption keys or anything someone would need to crack a machine? If I remove all of that then the bug report will be pretty sparse.
(Same question applies to SMOLT - machine profie report - as well) Or is "sensitive" just about the human readable data in the reports?

Sep 1, 2011i have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.

Feb 25, 2010so the safest way to go about this is to assume I know nothing. I mean, I have a rough Idea of what a kernel is, no idea what a shell is, etc. I do consider myself computer savvy, but know NOTHING about linux and thats why I'm Diving in, hopefully not too much, this is just to give you an idea of what we're working with here.
After several install attempts I kept getting a blank screen. Whether it be black,white, or the default gnome desktop (without any icons, and simple things like ctrl+alt+backspace just doesn't work, or anything else for that matter) I was ending up with a blank screen. Driver for moniter....maybe....but I did succesfully install it once, and it worked like a charm...shutdown properly, and the next day after work...Boom, same thing after startup.today I started from scratch and re-installed....samething, until I hit the power button, went from the dvd(iso) and did a fail safe, now my resolution is much better than it was the first time..Actual questions.....what did I do to fix it when failsafe never worked before?
Is there a way to save these settings, so I don't run into the problem again, because I don't even want to turn of my computer at this point?If i'm trying to dive in and learn the command line actions, is there any substancial difference between gnome terminal or hitting "c" to bring up the command line?
