Nov 18, 2010I am having no luck configuring ProFTPd on a Debian Lenny production server we use to host our MySQL databases and a few websites. I had originally set it up so I could login and manage our internal sites, but I have the need to allow a few clients in to access their sites that we host. I am trying to root the users in their site directory, which would be "/sites/www.whatever.com/".
It just hit me while typing this. Is it possible to create a user without a shell to prevent login via SSH and set the home folder to /sites/whatever instead of /home/username? That would allow me to continue operating with my current configuration and root them in their site while preventing SSH logins.

Sep 25, 2010Using suse 11.3 and kde 4.5 after an updating happen that runlevel 5 is skipped and suse dont start x I think is a kdm problem, becouse if I change kdm in gdm in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager it starts and show me the login window, (but system don't work well)
If I do startx this is the error:

Ubuntu :: Unity Seriously Messed Up Graphically
May 28, 2011I need to say that this is not my computer, so I don't know all of the details, but I know all it is really used for is Internet and reading .pdfs, and the main user is not an advanced user at all, so he wouldn't have messed with anything important. The picture pretty much says it all. It does not look like this at startup. This computer is set up to go to sleep after 15 minutes, and sleeping is how it spends most of its time. I don't know if sleep is what causes the problem or not. It just does it randomly after some time. The only way to fix it is to restart the computer.

Jul 1, 2011I am running the new Natty install of Ubuntu. I always seem to have this particular problem, particularly with any ubuntu/kubuntu installs, but not other distros.
Basically, I'm trying to run a program -- a text-based game server. The server needs to be able to create new folders and write and delete files within its own directories in order to work.
However, no matter what I try to set in permissions, the program always spits out errors saying it was denied. I have set the directories so that any user/program can write/delete in them, and it still doesn't work.

May 31, 2011I'm using Fedora 15. For some reason, my computer is booting up graphically. I do not have video drivers for a graphical setup apparently now that Gnome is getting more advanced, so I really need to restore to a CLI. I see /etc/inittab is now deprecated thanks to systemd. The instructions say the following:

# systemd uses 'targets' instead of runlevels. By default, there are two main targets:
# multi-user.target: analogous to runlevel 3
# graphical.target: analogous to runlevel 5

# ln -s /lib/systemd/system/<target name>.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target
And that's exactly what I have set up!

Why is this machine starting up graphically? I even removed the symlink and recreated it... but that obviously isn't the issue here.
Networking :: Can't Delete Files Graphically On Network Share
Jun 21, 2011There is a test/development environment here at work with some windows and some CentOS systems connecting over a network share to a CentOS fileserver in the data center. The developers run as root (i know i know, but the environment is completely cut off from the rest of the company and this just worked best) and connect to the fileserver using samba. I tried using nfs but to no avail. Now, a couple of the developers have no issues with permissions at all but a couple of them are not able to delete files or folders in their network share graphically. They can through terminal though.

Jul 27, 2010Since I own one of those Centrino based Core 2 notebooks that create annoying buzzing noises when idle (= entering C3 or C4 power saving states), I'm looking for a program that creates artificial CPU usage. It should allow me to limit the CPU usage to a certain percentage (I know that there are a lot of easy ways to create 100% usage ;-).
Another option would be to disable the C3 or C4 states, but in newer kernels the sysfs interface to set the max_cstate on-the-fly was removed for some reason, and I don't always want to reboot after switching from AC to battery (and vice versa).

I have everything installed and working on a centos WHM/CPanel system and am able to generate the screen shots and save them to root folder from shell with the following commands.

export DISPLAY=localhost:2.0
khtml2png2 --sw 200 --sh 150 http://www.example.com example.png
It works 100% fine when you run it from shell.
