Debian Multimedia :: Launch Windows 7 Start Menu Via Freerdp RemoteApp
Oct 6, 2015
For many years, I was happily running VMware virtual windows machine (XP, now Win7) on my linux host. Using the VMware unity mode I had the perfect, seamless integration of windows applications on my favourite linux desktop. However, VMware has dropped unity support for Linux hosts in their latest release 12. So I need a new method to get my seamless integration.
I have set up some launchers for the most commonly used windows applications to run them as RemoteApp via xfreerdp directly from my dock. That seems to work OK. Now sometimes I have to access some other program or maybe the control panels or something like that. For this purpose it would be very useful to be able to launch the (or any 3rd party) "start menu" as remote up and from there launch whatever is needed. So far I did not find anything that looked like a StartMenu.exe I could use
How I could access the start menu via RemoteApp.
VMware Unity was way cool. I tried Seamless Mode in VBox, but that doesn't cut it for me ....

I use a P2P application (KMLDonkey), whose client (mlnet) can be either started automatically, at startup, or manually, after login. At installation, when prompted, I chose the former so as to minimise the number of clicks. However, with time I found it inconvenient because, of course, it would start downloading even though I haven't started its GUI yet or don't plan to use it at all.
What I would like is to click on 1 entry in the menu and have the client and, in sequence, the GUI start when I decide to use the application. Perhaps this would require a short script in /usr/local/bin? I've tried to write one, but failed miserably, as I'm not good at it. I use KDE, but the application or the desktop manager themselves are not important here, for the solution would apply to any application with a separate client/GUI.

I don`t know what kind of combination of keys I pressed, but the title bar of all windows in my Gnome vanished. Trying to fix it, I unmarked the option "show menu bar" in one of my windows. Then, I realised I couldn`t put it back either. It`s kind of frustating be stuck in such a small problem, but Gnome isn`t offering me any easy way to put these things back in place. maybe with a keyboard combination of keys that recovers all of this?
I did it, it recovered Gnome windows default, but the menus are still gone. It just erased my customizations (colors, window color, bar size, etc.)

I can't turn on my PC and write jet from my neighbors notebook. Because of problems with Windows updates und ubuntu vpn I installed today Windows 7 again and then openSuse. It was OK. Than I began with set up of different Programms for windows, like WinRar, Avira Antivir ect... As soos as it was done I wanted to begin with set up of openSuse... But the start menu is gone - there is nothing there now! Last time I could choose betwee 2 windows partitions, openSuse start-partition and openSuse fall-Save. -Now there is only "grub>" line
And I doesn't have any idea what I can do, I doesnt know where are startfiles, where is /boot/grub order, I don't know how can grub be used also. But I know that if I try to register my windows 7 agan at the same day, my windows lizens would get invalid. Has someone any idee what can be done?

I have (after the first failed attempt) coppied my .kde folder to /root and still am not able to launch it (it works fine under my login). The following is what I get after removing my personal .kde folder from root and launching kate: kate(16689): Session bus not found
KCrash: Application 'kate' crashing...
sock_file=/root/.kde/socket-debian/kdeinit4__0
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
KCrash cannot reach kdeinit, launching directly.

As a long time FreeBSD user, I consider give Debian a try upon the arrival of my new laptop. However, seems I couldn't launch desktop environment by simply typing startx on console as on FreeBSD. I can start desktop through a display manager like lightdm on Stretch, which is quite easy and straightforward, but I still prefer the "startx way".
I setup Debian Stretch on Virtualbox (4.3.43) using official debian-installer, login as a normal user, and install xfce4 via Code: Select allsudo apt-get install xfce4. The installation of xfce4 was very fast and it also introduced xorg related packages here. Then I edit my $HOME/.xinitrc as follows:
Code: Select allexec startxfce4
I typed startx to expect Xfce desktop but got the errors complained instead: [URL]....
while the xorg.0.log had the following contents: [URL]....
So, I failed to start xfce4 by startx as a normal user and had to install and start lightdm to go into desktop, but when I login as root, it worked and launched Xfce4 by startx without any problem. I couldn't figure it out now.

In these days I was doing some experiments: creating rpms of different programs by compiling directly the source code. Everything went well, every-time I was able to create a rpm and install it correctly, no errors no issues. Unfortunately I was not able to find the way to create in the menu (application tab) any quick launch icon. I was forced always to use the terminal and digit the correspondent command :wxmaxima, gnuplot, etc. I tried to look in the manuals but there wasn't anything useful.
By the way I am using Opensuse 11.3 and KDE 4.4.4.

I just loaded KNE 10.4 onto my Dell Mini and I'm trying to get it configured. Some apps that I have installed using Synaptic (Kpackage seems pretty useless, even aside from the fact that the package names are illegible) are not showing up in the Search and Launch, and I would also like to add an additional category and add some items to the favorites list at the top of the page.
Right clicking does not seem to provide any options to change what used to be the menus, and middle clicking puts strange little yellow boxes at the bottom of the screen. (I haven't figured out how to make those go away. What config files hold the data I want to update? Are they not under ~/.kde for some reason?

I changed the kde desktop layout to Search and Launch on an 11.3 64-bit machine and lost the ability to bring up a right-click menu on the desktop, also tried it on an 11.3 32 bit machine and experienced the exact same thing how I can solve this even if it means reverting to the default layout? I suppose I could delete and re-create the user's /home but I'm wondering if there's a way to solve this without resorting to that On the one machine I've put 11.4 on so far it's using the search and launch layout with absolutely no problems at all and finding it very handy
the 11.4 machine I'm using this layout on actually logs onto the 11.3 64 bit machine I first had the problem with via nis and an nfs /home export For the user it's working fine under I set the search and launch layout from the 11.4 machine, the user I'm getting the problem with on the 64-bit machine (nis/nfs server) was set on the server itself. The 11.3 32 bit machine however, I disabled nis and nfs so that it would use local logons and /home only so it seems to be an issue with 11.3 itself and regardless of cpu architecture

I'm trying to get a multi-boot setup going for a USB.
I have different vfat-32 partitions I have copied ISOs of several linux distros.
The first one I installed using unetbootin, which works great and uses syslinux, but syslinux can't boot other partitions. So, I have grub installed.
I have gotten so far as to be able to get the grub menu up, but trying to load the partition's isolinux (which is how the Linux Mint LDXE distro boots) gives me an grub error 13.
Here is my menu.1st:
Code:
default0
gfxmenu=/boot/gfxmenu/linuxmint.message
timeout5

Recently I installed Debuan "jessie". I previously had Windows 8.1 and Xubuntu installed. After installation Debian installed it's own version of GRUB, with entries for Debian, Xubuntu and Windows. The problem is that after I selected Windows when booting, GRUB menu no longer appears. It boots straight into Windows.
It's lenovo Ideapad z510 laptop, with special button that allows me to select between 4 options before booting - one of them is "Boot menu".
I didn't use it before windows "removed" GRUB, but now there are 2 options: Windows boot loader and Ubuntu. When I select Ubuntu it loads my old boot menu (from before installing Debian).
I thought that when I use update-grub from Xubuntu I will at least eb able to boot into debian. After I did that Debian option appeared in the GRUB menu, but it didn't work - black screen.
How to get GRUB menu working again (and avoid replacing it by windows boot loader)?

I am not sure if this is a qGIS issue or something to do with my desktop themes? In both KDE and GNOME Classic qGIS 2.12 does not have a menu bar, but only toolbars. What can be possible causes of this? In KDE the Windows Decorations are set to BE II preview, with a customized Desktop theme. Could this cause the menu bar not showing?

I have been running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid not on a separate disc partition but installed right on my Windows (7) partition. Everything was working fine until yesterday. I restarted my computer and then the system was scanning the disc then suddenly after the disc check, the computer restarted and when it was supposed to launch Ubuntu, the screen went completely white. I tried restarting again, I manage to get to where I choose to boot with Windows 7 or Ubuntu. I choose Ubuntu and the same happens again: white screen. It doesn't go any further than this and the only thing the computer can do is boot with Windows 7. Has anyone had the same problem? Also, is there a way I can access my files (saved in Ubunutu) from Windows? If I can manage to copy these files then I don't mind reformatting the whole disc.

try to keep file system organized on XP instead of C:program files*everything goes blindly here I use C:MEDIA*category*application_name.So where in Debian on the hard drive are programs actually installed to? There's a couple programs that the sites merely gave me zip files instead of installers that were also not like in the package manager so I'd like to know where to extract those files. Also how do I create a shortcut in the "start" menu to the executable?

I play around with OpenBox and FBPanel, and quite like it.
I started to install both OpenBox and FBPanel in Debian, and the menu don't have any icons on it.
Simply I'm not going to reconfigure everything in both distro, I copied fbpanel configuration folder to my Ubuntu home.
Then I install FBPanel in Ubuntu it have icons within the menus.
This is FBPanel from my Debian Jessie
This is FBPanel from my Ubuntu
I've googled around without any luck about this problem. It's minor and everything else works okay, but still this shouldn't be happen. Since I see the screenshots of FBPanel in Debian they all have icons on it. Tried changing the icon theme, nothing works. If it's because FBPanel can't find any icon, then the launcher shouldn't have any icons right? Also, I use the exact same configuration on both.
Is it because Debian uses different version of FBPanel? Haven't checked both version tho.
