Debian Configuration :: ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 Driver In Squeeze?

Mar 4, 2011

Alright, Lenny has a working "fglrx-driver" package for my laptop, but Squeeze does not. Would it be possible to install the one from Lenny on Squeeze since Squeeze has newer libraries and such? I know I can't install new stuff with older libraries, but can I install the old stuff with newer libraries? I am at the end of my rope here! I mean ATI sucks and we all know this, but I've always found a Linux/open-source alternative that worked, until Squeeze.

Ubuntu :: 8.10 And 10.10 With ATI Radeon Xpress 1100?

Dec 1, 2010

I have an Aspire 5100 with ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 and have been happily running Ubuntu 8.10 until now when support has ended. I continued with 8.10 because the graphics have been fine with my system.I also have 10.10 installed and apart from the graphics, I would have no problem changing/upgrading.The problem is the glare, after a while it is very hard to work on.Is there anything I can do that's not to technical to reduce the glare.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Screen Distortions/flickering With 3d Apps Ati Radeon Xpress 1100 On Kubuntu 9.04

Jan 12, 2010

i installed kubuntu 9.04 yesterday and updated it with everything that was available, i have ati radeon xpress 1100 and i got everything running fine including kwin effects but i have a small problem i cant figure out how to fix:

When i run glxgears and put any window on top of it, i can still see the 3d gears rolling and i think this same problem is responsible for occasional artifacts on the screen. Its a very minor problem but i would like to see if fixed because i cannot use google earth properly, it seems that any 3d application likes to be focused on the screen, its like they flicker while being overlaid on top of everything.

Also i read the countless threads here complaining about not being able to use fglrx etc because of updated xorg. Well the reason im using 9.04 is because my wireless card alfa awus036h does not work with kernel > 2.6.31 and i have already tried kubuntu 9.10 on this laptop i wasnt having any problem with the display. All the kwin effects ran fine and no distortions of any kind. Seems there is some bug in 9.04.

Debian :: Radeon Xpress 200 Problem On Debian Squeeze - Kernel 2.6.30

Sep 18, 2009

After dist-upgrade a few days ago, X refuses to kick in.

Xorg.0.log reads

Code:

Fatal server error:

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at http://wiki.x.org

Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information. lshw reads that Xpress 200M is claimed by radeonfb driver.

At this moment, no fglrx packages are installed.

System is Toshiba laptop.

I do not think ATI dropped support, however, even without fglrx, nothing works.

Debian :: Installing ATI Radeon HD 5700 Driver On Squeeze 6.0.1

Jul 19, 2011

I've been on numerous websites--with tutorials telling how to install the ATI drivers, I'm running Squeeze 6.0.1 Gnome amd64, the tutorial I am using is located at the ATIProprietary Debian Wiki [URL] when I try the following:
sudo apt-get install fakeroot debhelper build-essential libstdc++5

I get this:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package fakeroot is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source.

E: Package 'debhelper' has no installation candidate
E: Unable to locate package build-essentials
E: Unable to locate package libstdc++5
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'libstdc++5'

I have a feeling that apt-get is not searching the web, yet searching a CD perhaps? Because when I've tried the apt-get update, I get the following:
Ign cdrom://[Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0 _Squeeze_ - Official Snapshot amd64 LIVE/INSTALL Binary 20110324-08:54] squeeze Release.gpg
Media change: please insert the disc labeled
'Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0 _Squeeze_ - Official Snapshot amd64 LIVE/INSTALL Binary 20110324-08:54'
in the drive '/media/cdrom/' and press enter

After doing that, nothing happens, and my apt-get still doesn't work, everything I try and install like build-essential says it's not found. Also when I
su
nano /ect/apt/sources.lst
the list in nano is empty???

I'm currently running a dual boot with windows xp/debian but as soon as I can get everything working, I'm going to turn this into a full linux system. Also my sound doesn't work, but my sound is HD sound that goes via the video card, I have it hooked up HDMI to my LG tv/monitor, sound works fine on xp. I think once I get the video card drivers installed it should possibly fix my sound issues at the same time.

Debian Hardware :: ATI Radeon HD3200 And Official Driver In Squeeze?

Apr 5, 2010

I am using the latest squeeze (2.6.32-6 kernel) on a Thinkpad X100e.Most things works fine (after some tinkering though) but I cannot install the official ATI driver.I have tried:1) Downloaded the latest official drivers from ATI's site.a) If I choose install, it says that everything works but the driver is not actually installed. After reboot I don't have X anymoreb) If I choose build packages for Debian testing, the packages are not built. 2) Downloaded the not so latest official drivers. Same as in case 1)3) Tried to install them with the sgfxi script. The script reports a success but still after a reboot, I have no X.4) Tried to apt-get install fglrx-driver package from sid. Everything installs fine, after reboot I have X but no 3d acceleration.

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze: Suspend/hibernate Resume Fails With Radeon Graphics

Aug 6, 2010

I am running Squeeze on an older Compaq EVO laptop with radeon graphics.

A few months ago, after an upgrade, suspend and hibernate stopped working. The suspend or hibernate worked fine, but the resume just hung with a black screen. I finally got around to looking into it and found a workaround.

The workaround is to disable Kernel Mode Setting for the radeon. This can be done by adding the boot parameter "radeon.modeset=0" or by editing /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf so that it includes the line "options radeon modeset=0".

If you are interested in the details, you can search for problem reports related to radeon kernel mode setting.

Debian Hardware :: Radeon X1050 - Is This Card Supported In Squeeze By Either The Non-free Firmware Or The Proprietary Driver

Is this card supported in Squeeze by either the non-free firmware or the proprietary driver? I just got one to stick into an older box that will be going to a college girl that wants the 3D desktop in KDE. The built-in video was a joke and wouldn't even work without compositing. It was one of those crappy, non-standard pieces of crap known as a "Unichrome" (not the pro).

1- I'm trying to install the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 driver over the non-free repository ...the problem is that until now i didn't found a recent documentation ...and to be honest i don't know which procedure should i use to rightly install the driver .

2- I have two graphic cards (integrated Intel with the i5 processor), and i can't change the default one to the ati! because debian had set the intel card as a native one...! that's why i´ m wondering if just an installation of the non-free drivers will solve this or not! Debian Configuration :: Radeon DRI Driver, Clicking "Apply" It Fails?

Mar 3, 2011

i couldn't get out after many hours of reading documents/posts/forums etc.

The issue:In Kde 4.4.5, using xorg and radeon opensource driver, i can't set OpenGL for desktop effects. Clicking "Apply" it fails. OpenGL seems corrupted someway. I have to stay on XRender. This is the glxinfo output:

glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.7.1
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

The story:i was running previously kde with nvidia propertary driver and a nvidia board. Then i removed the board for a fault and put a sapphire radeon HD5450. Initially i set up propertary radeon fglrx. At the end, i decided to use the opensource drivers, removed in the best way all fglrx files and links. So i then followed the wiki for reinstall open source radeon drivers, did it many times, also reinstalling xorg with purge, same for libgl1-mesa-xxx etc, but i still cannot use the OpenGL hardware support (should be DRI, that is correctly installed but not loaded).

Seems to be really an opengl corruption, if i disable the check on apply, and select OpenGL rendering, i get a complete blank screen.

Some information of the system:

Hardware :: Can't Start X On Radeon Xpress 200M

Aug 22, 2010

I can usually solve this type of problem myself, but this time around I'm totally stumped. Can anyone lend a hand? A little background: I have an HP Pavilion ZV6233NR with no screen installed, connected through the VGA to my LCD TV. This is a somewhat older desktop replacement laptop. I have repurposed it to run as both a server and a media center (e.g. it connects to my TV). I'm upgrading from Debian Etch to Debian Squeeze (never installed Lenny). With Etch, I used the proprietary fglrx driver, however the fglrx package in Squeeze doesn't support such old hardware (obviously), but the new foss radeon driver does.

The problem: First, suppose I run X with no arguments, the (EE) and (WW) lines in /var/log/Xorg.0.log read (excluding missing font files):

(WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa
(WW) Falling back to old probe method for fbdev
(EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory

[code]....

I've attached the full Xorg.0.log for that second case (radeon driver using the conf file), in case that helps. Three things I've tried (but for all I know bungled, test me if you think I might have):Fresh installation from the CD. (In case I had left over fglrx stuff lying around.) Horizontal and vertical refresh rates for the screen (although I didn't actually look them up in the LCD screen's manual).
Setting modes in the screen section to restrict the resolution and/or color depth.

Hardware :: ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M - Ubuntu Maverick

Apr 9, 2011

I have a problem with my video card since I installed Ubuntu Maverick. Compiz is working, I have Desktop effects and everything but.. i have a lot of troubles too. I can't watch full size video in ..... (it's very slow or totally freezing every time i try fullscreen option). Google Earth working, but when zoomed too much (to see map closer), i am seeing a lot of lines and strange pixels.

Everything was working good on CentOS, but after getting into Ubuntu.. something went wrong. I think the problems are coming from the drivers.

I have this drivers installed:

Code:

I followed this guide - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver - for installing everything again, and I also added the Xorg Edgers PPA [url]. When I have xserver-xorg-video-radeon & ati drivers installed, my system have all the problems listed above and don't have 3d acceleration (which I need a lot for running Cedega and VMWare).

This is output from glxgears (while having the drivers installed)

Code:

And this is glxinfo in verbose mode:

Code:

(notice I have Direct Rendering, but not 3d acceleration, since it have troubles with the driver.. but the file is in the same folder it's searching for it)

When I remove them from the system (purge), and I use only the Edgers PPA and:

Code:

I can watch full size video at ....., my computer hibernates and wakes up after (which is causing a lot of problems if I'm using the xorg-ati & radeon, laptop freezes requiring hard restart). I can use Google Earth without having troubles, but.. still can't run Cedega and VM, because I don't pass the tests for 3d acceleration.

This is output of my glxgears & glxinfo (in verbose) after removing the drivers and restarting X.

P.S I do not use xorg.conf and i have only open source driver installed, currently i have a ubuntu and a kubuntu installed on this laptop, i did not tried any fix in the present because i tried them before so thuis operating systems are clean(nothing wrong with the libs or configs)

Slackware :: ATI Radeon X700 DRI / ATI Card Configuration/driver?

May 11, 2010

I am setting up a system that I was recently given and am having some problems with the ATI card configuration/driver (I think).

THE SYSTEM

System is P4 3.0Ghz, 1GB RAM, 200GB SATA with new full install of Slackware 13, Fluxbox WM/DE.

Code:
lspci lines:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV410 [Radeon X700 Pro (PCIE)]
01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV410 [Radeon X700 Pro (PCIE)] (Secondary)
I have read a lot of things that seem confusing to me, but I have set it up mostly with info from slackwiki.org, and after reading various threads here at LQ.

I am using an xorg.conf created with Xorg -configure, with the radeon driver and have added the DRI section and enabled options per the above URL.

THE SYMPTOMS

First, X starts and I can run glxgears and get a frame rate of 3100+.

But glxinfo seems incorrect:

Code:
glxinfo |grep -i render
GL_RENDERER: Mesa DRI R300 20060815 x86/MMX/SSE2 TCL
I see no "direct rendering: yes" as seems to be required (am I missing something?).

Most things seem to work such as video playback from DVD and Flash.

At boot the vesa modes do not work and I have to use vga=normal, which is no big problem, although a better framebuffer mode would be nice if possible.

But the first big problem I hit is running Blender. When it starts my screen goes blank with just the mouse cursor visible and moving. To get out of this I can kill X or ctl-alt-Fx to get a new login and kill the blender process. Oddly, I found I can also alt-F2 (Open a Run dialog in Fluxbox) which opens with a running Blender behind it - but any attempt to interact with the blender window reverts to the blank screen with mouse cursor.

I believe this to be due to the lack of DRI mostly because of a similar problem once encountered on another system - but am open to other suggestions.

But I think I need to better understand and configure the drivers for this video card before troubleshooting any applications.

So, I guess my questions would be:

1. Is the radeon driver the best choice for this card?
2. Are there advantages/disadvantages to using the ATI driver instead? (Is there a slackbuild for the proprietary driver?)
3. Can someone point me to any better sources of info for ATI cards/drivers used under Slackware?

Debian Installation :: Squeeze Boot Stalls / Radeon Mobility

May 23, 2011

I have just installed Squeeze on my laptap with a radeon mobility equipped laptop. When it boots, I see the following message:r600_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/RV635_pfp.bin".and some others, too, but it stalls at that point, and I cannot use CTRL-ALT-F2 to get a text-based prompt - in fact, I can only seem to get it back with a ALT-SYSRQ (R-E-I-S-V-B) sequence to force a reboot. It is a multi-boot system, with a windows partition, Ubuntu partition, and the new Debian partition. The Ubuntu and Windows partitions will still boot, only the Debian stalls.

When I boot into Ubuntu, I can see the Debian partition, and can see (for instance) the /var/boot/dmesg file, but it only says:"(Nothing has been logged yet.)"So, being new to debian itself (even though, I know, that Ubuntu has a debian base), how can I make it boot without X, which is I presume, the center of the difficulty? Can I change some file on the debian partition using Ubuntu to get the debian partition to boot in text only mode, and then try to fix the radeon driver?

Alternatively, can I put the proper files for the radeon driver *from* the Ubuntu partition *to* the debian partition and expect it to load and boot correctly? I did, at one point, download and install the proprietary ATI driver files on Ubuntu, so can I put them in a proper place on the debian install?
